The climate crisis has reached a “really bleak moment”, one of the world’s leading climate scientists has said, after a slew of major reports laid bare how close the planet is to catastrophe.
Collective action is needed by the world’s nations more now than at any point since the second world war to avoid climate tipping points, Prof Johan Rockström said, but geopolitical tensions are at a high.
He said the world was coming “very, very close to irreversible changes … time is really running out very, very fast”.
Emissions must fall by about half by 2030 to meet the internationally agreed target of 1.5C of heating but are still rising, the reports showed – at a time when oil giants are making astronomical amounts of money.
On Thursday, Shell and TotalEnergies both doubled their quarterly profits to about $10bn. Oil and gas giants have enjoyed soaring profits as post-Covid demand jumps and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The sector is expected to amass $4tn in 2022, strengthening calls for heavy windfall taxes to address the cost of living crisis and fund the clean energy transition.

“Furthermore, the world is unfortunately in a geopolitically unstable state,” said Rockström. “So when we need collective action at the global level, probably more than ever since the second world war, to keep the planet stable, we have an all-time low in terms of our ability to collectively act together.”
“Time is really running out very, very fast,” he said. “I must say, in my professional life as a climate scientist, this is a low point. The window for 1.5C is shutting as I speak, so it’s really tough.”

Record profits for oil and gas is a real vote of confidence in renewables, the “cheapest form of energy” /sarc.
Reading the Guardian article its difficult to see what bothers them most, all these imaginary tipping points we are always about to cross but never quite reach, or that profits in the oil and gas industry, which Guardian have been telling everyone to divest for years, are soaring into the stratosphere.
Time to find a new fake crisis guys. You had people for the first decade or two, since the climate crisis went big in the early 90s, but the long running movie is getting boring. Four decades and we still haven’t seen the monster. All we have are endless empty promises that it is about to get interesting.
Anyone proclaiming that global action is required to reduce carbon should be required to state what they have personally achieved in reducing their carbon footprint.

Lots of Bald Eagles here in Western Washington. Don’t know that I’ve heard of them taking a cat (I imagine a cat would put up more of a fight than a small dog). But coyotes have also become a problem around here. I only started hearing them in the last year, and I’ve been here 20.

My cat–may he rest in peace–used to bring mice to me if they were in the house. He was an indoor cat, was well fed and would not eat them, but that hunting instinct was strong in him. (We live in a rural area, and yes, the mice come in the winter.)
All cat food is meat, based on my 50 years of experience with cats. My cat also likes wheat grass, but could not survive on that alone.
Cats are obligate carnivores and must eat meat or they will die from nutrient deficiencies. They’ll eat grass and such for fiber, but their main need for nutrition is meat or meat derived (cat food) sources.
Cats eat grass sometimes to clean their teeth . I feed mine chicken necks occasionally that does the same thing !

If I were a German. Polish or Romanian politician or entrepreneur I think I’d be sorting out rail links and rolling stock for moving Ukranian agricultural produce west rather than across the Black Sea. I’m sure rhe Chinese can help with rolling stock.

Slight but significant problem on that – Ukraine uses a different rail guage than the EU so rolling stock cannot move from the EU to Ukraine or vice versa. Ukraine also has no infrastructure on the border with the EU to facilitate unloading one train and loading it onto another. The rail links would need a huge amount of work to make it happen and there hasn’t been much opportunity or incentive to put it in place before now.

It seems to me that we really are getting close to catastrophe – our politicians are intentionally trying to wreck the countries they work for, and they’re succeeding. I listened to a NZ farmer today and was quite surprised at how on board he was with trying to work with our emissions reductions policy, so they’re even bringing some of the people they’re destroying along with them.
I wouldn’t go so far as uttering words I’ve been asked to mouth, but I am at the point where I want the government to do some of this crazy stuff. We need to get it out in the open—see what it really means, so we can put it behind us.
Just explaining that we’ll be cold, lonely, and hungry, in the dark, is not going to get through. Pretty well all my family and friends understand the “climate crisis” as an opportunity to buy cool new energy saving stuff like air-fryers and eScooters. Empty fruit-and-veg aisles in the supermarket don’t feature in their daydreams.
Give them something to think about. Transport for London has banned e scooters from the London Underground after three of them spontaneously ignited on tube trains over a relatively short period.

We used to have a manufacturing industry, but power and labor got much too expensive, so most of it closed down.

New Zealand produces food to feed 40 million people around the world .
The UN has stated that no country should take action to reduce emissions THAT might affect food production .
The attack on enteric methane emissions from farmed livestock is an attack on world food supply’s and cannot make one iota of difference to world wide methane or CO2 emissions .
The reason is very simple and most people can understand when the facts are pointed out ,that every tonne of forage that farmed animals consume has absorbed the gas of life CO2 to grow.
The very small amount of methane CH4 that is emitted as the animals are chewing their cud breaks down in the upper atmosphere in 8 to 10 years into CO2 and water vapour .
Not one additional atom of carbon is added to the atmosphere .
The process is a cycle and with carbon building up in the soil under grazed pasture.
Farmed pastures become carbon sinks that this government refuses to recognize along with trees growing on farms .
NOT ONE ATOM of carbon is added to the atmosphere so that means that the process is CARBON NEUTRAL.
The other very misguided attack on farming in New Zealand and around the world is the attack on nitrogenous fertilizer.
Farmers are going to be taxed for applying nitrogen which is going to reduce the amount of food grown and exported from New Zealand .
This is a TAX on food but no one in the government seems to be aware that nitrogenous fertilizer grows half of the worlds food .
Where will the worlds food come from if nitrogenous fertilizer is restricted ?

The atmospheric CO2 increase according to the accompanying graph was 80ppm which is 0.00008 percent of the atmosphere which is read as eight-thousandths of one percent. A realistic graph of such an increase would resemble a flat line.
