Where is this climate disaster? Despite decades of trying, we still haven’t crossed one of their imaginary tipping points.

Key UN reports published in last two days warn urgent and collective action needed – as oil firms report astronomical profits
The climate crisis has reached a “really bleak moment”, one of the world’s leading climate scientists has said, after a slew of major reports laid bare how close the planet is to catastrophe.
Collective action is needed by the world’s nations more now than at any point since the second world war to avoid climate tipping points, Prof Johan Rockström said, but geopolitical tensions are at a high.
He said the world was coming “very, very close to irreversible changes … time is really running out very, very fast”.
Emissions must fall by about half by 2030 to meet the internationally agreed target of 1.5C of heating but are still rising, the reports showed – at a time when oil giants are making astronomical amounts of money.
On Thursday, Shell and TotalEnergies both doubled their quarterly profits to about $10bn. Oil and gas giants have enjoyed soaring profits as post-Covid demand jumps and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The sector is expected to amass $4tn in 2022, strengthening calls for heavy windfall taxes to address the cost of living crisis and fund the clean energy transition.
“Furthermore, the world is unfortunately in a geopolitically unstable state,” said Rockström. “So when we need collective action at the global level, probably more than ever since the second world war, to keep the planet stable, we have an all-time low in terms of our ability to collectively act together.”
“Time is really running out very, very fast,” he said. “I must say, in my professional life as a climate scientist, this is a low point. The window for 1.5C is shutting as I speak, so it’s really tough.”

Record profits for oil and gas is a real vote of confidence in renewables, the “cheapest form of energy” /sarc.
Reading the Guardian article its difficult to see what bothers them most, all these imaginary tipping points we are always about to cross but never quite reach, or that profits in the oil and gas industry, which Guardian have been telling everyone to divest for years, are soaring into the stratosphere.
Time to find a new fake crisis guys. You had people for the first decade or two, since the climate crisis went big in the early 90s, but the long running movie is getting boring. Four decades and we still haven’t seen the monster. All we have are endless empty promises that it is about to get interesting.
Anyone proclaiming that global action is required to reduce carbon should be required to state what they have personally achieved in reducing their carbon footprint.
So Johan Rockström, what have you done in the last year to reduce YOUR carbon load on the planet.
On the other hand I have not done much to add to my carbon footprint to help plant life return to its glory days of the carboniferous years.
I’d never heard of this world leading climate “scientist” before. Which way is he leading the world?
He’s a fearmongering Potsdam cult alarmist.
Ahh, a Putz, damn!
I stopped eating baked beans.
Lame Jokes Academy graduate
One has to sacrifice to save the planet.
Everyone knows natural gas is bad,
Natural gas is said to be a fossil fuel. How old are you?
Maybe cats know that millions of birds are chopped up by eco-friendly windmills every year , so the cats are doing their part to prevent bird extinction .
Cats have a natural instinct to kill small birds, baby rabbits and chipmunks, even if they are not hungry and won’t eat them. That’s why I keep my cat indoors 100% of the time.
That and the many, many other things out there that can kill them.
“That and the many, many other things out there that can kill them.”
Lots of Bald Eagles here in Western Washington. Don’t know that I’ve heard of them taking a cat (I imagine a cat would put up more of a fight than a small dog). But coyotes have also become a problem around here. I only started hearing them in the last year, and I’ve been here 20.
There was an eagle webcam somewhere that once showed an eagle feeding someone’s cat to their nestlings.
They are not good at crossing roads.
“That’s why I keep my cat indoors 100% of the time.”
Yes. That, and if the cat isn’t staying on your property, you’ve overstepped your bounds, literally.
If you have a farm, that’s different.
That’s just cruel.
My 120lb Rhodesian Ridgeback hates cats and will kill them on the spot saving our precious wildlife…
My cat–may he rest in peace–used to bring mice to me if they were in the house. He was an indoor cat, was well fed and would not eat them, but that hunting instinct was strong in him. (We live in a rural area, and yes, the mice come in the winter.)
All cat food is meat, based on my 50 years of experience with cats. My cat also likes wheat grass, but could not survive on that alone.
Cats are obligate carnivores and must eat meat or they will die from nutrient deficiencies. They’ll eat grass and such for fiber, but their main need for nutrition is meat or meat derived (cat food) sources.
Cats eat grass sometimes to clean their teeth . I feed mine chicken necks occasionally that does the same thing !
At 69: I might qualify as a fossil
No just and old fool
Fossil or not, his output would only count as fuel if he was connected to a generator.
I understand cabbage is also implicated.
If IS getting interesting. The prospect of energy poverty across Europe is fast becoming a reality in 2022. Food shortages in Europe are not off the agenda either in 2022.
If I were a German. Polish or Romanian politician or entrepreneur I think I’d be sorting out rail links and rolling stock for moving Ukranian agricultural produce west rather than across the Black Sea. I’m sure rhe Chinese can help with rolling stock.
Ukrainian agricultural produce is owned by USA interests – NOT Ukraine’s.
Slight but significant problem on that – Ukraine uses a different rail guage than the EU so rolling stock cannot move from the EU to Ukraine or vice versa. Ukraine also has no infrastructure on the border with the EU to facilitate unloading one train and loading it onto another. The rail links would need a huge amount of work to make it happen and there hasn’t been much opportunity or incentive to put it in place before now.
That might not be as big of a problem as you think. Apparently Poland and Ukraine have already solved this problem with fancy Variable Gauge Rolling Stock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_gauge
Are there _any_ western countries that have said enough to the climate crisis nonsense?
It seems to me that we really are getting close to catastrophe – our politicians are intentionally trying to wreck the countries they work for, and they’re succeeding. I listened to a NZ farmer today and was quite surprised at how on board he was with trying to work with our emissions reductions policy, so they’re even bringing some of the people they’re destroying along with them.
I wouldn’t go so far as uttering words I’ve been asked to mouth, but I am at the point where I want the government to do some of this crazy stuff. We need to get it out in the open—see what it really means, so we can put it behind us.
Just explaining that we’ll be cold, lonely, and hungry, in the dark, is not going to get through. Pretty well all my family and friends understand the “climate crisis” as an opportunity to buy cool new energy saving stuff like air-fryers and eScooters. Empty fruit-and-veg aisles in the supermarket don’t feature in their daydreams.
Give them something to think about. Transport for London has banned e scooters from the London Underground after three of them spontaneously ignited on tube trains over a relatively short period.
The problem, Dave, is that they tend to not think.
I think Italy might be waking up to the problem.
Yep – Italy could be the first of the inevitable domino cascade.
Realistically, I think Australia is the only G20 economy that has better than a snowball in hell chance of pulling off close to Nut-Zero. As long as China maintains its high demand for resources and keeps supplying the manufactured goods Australia needs, mining will keep the Australian economy afloat.
There are also a lot of nutters in Europe and Japan willing to throw money at Australia to dabble with green hydrogen. That dabbling comes with a significant price tag.
Does Australia actually manufacture anything? If you outsource all the smoky stuff, Net-Zero is easy.
We used to have a manufacturing industry, but power and labor got much too expensive, so most of it closed down.
Not a chance will Australia get to NetZero, not even if our current government stays in office several terms. For Australia to get there, we will need to have about 8 times as many large wind and solar farms as we already have. But what we also don’t have is nuclear power, and the current mob is ideologically opposed to nuclear power. So once the remaining coal fired power stations close, we will enjo9y blackouts when the wind does not blow and the sun has set. More likely we will get a revolt before net Zero
Politicians are well aware that CC is 95% media clickbait….but are taking this opportunity to increase taxes, fines, government spending % of the economy, and to build government departments filled by petticrats, always good for their pocketbooks and egos…..all this before the virtue signalling to voters loses its swing-vote glamour…. when 20 years down the road it becomes apparent that the best answer was more nuclear power all along, and the taxes have become a needed part of general revenue that are spent on government jobs and minimum basic incomes….
There is no limit to the re-education of our farming sector by the current Marxists. Only one year to the next General Election!
That New Zealand farmer would certainly be in the minority.
The constant barrage in our news must have an effect on some.
I have been farming all of my life and I have a wide circle of farming friends .
Every one that I know is against out governments misguided attack on food production .
New Zealand produces food to feed 40 million people around the world .
The UN has stated that no country should take action to reduce emissions THAT might affect food production .
The attack on enteric methane emissions from farmed livestock is an attack on world food supply’s and cannot make one iota of difference to world wide methane or CO2 emissions .
The reason is very simple and most people can understand when the facts are pointed out ,that every tonne of forage that farmed animals consume has absorbed the gas of life CO2 to grow.
The very small amount of methane CH4 that is emitted as the animals are chewing their cud breaks down in the upper atmosphere in 8 to 10 years into CO2 and water vapour .
Not one additional atom of carbon is added to the atmosphere .
The process is a cycle and with carbon building up in the soil under grazed pasture.
Farmed pastures become carbon sinks that this government refuses to recognize along with trees growing on farms .
NOT ONE ATOM of carbon is added to the atmosphere so that means that the process is CARBON NEUTRAL.
The other very misguided attack on farming in New Zealand and around the world is the attack on nitrogenous fertilizer.
Farmers are going to be taxed for applying nitrogen which is going to reduce the amount of food grown and exported from New Zealand .
This is a TAX on food but no one in the government seems to be aware that nitrogenous fertilizer grows half of the worlds food .
Where will the worlds food come from if nitrogenous fertilizer is restricted ?
Canada is trying to restrict fertilizers used to grow food as well. But urbanites (who think that growing one tomato plant on a high-rise balcony qualifies them as farmer experts) keep voting in the nutbars.
Vancouver just turfed out their ultra-green mayor and council in favor of a right-leaning slate. When “Lotusland” does this it signals big changes nationwide.
You miss the point. Half the world won’t have food and will die off. That’s the Green New Deal.
Already the nutters are blaming climate change on world hunger .
I heard our Prime Nut Jacinda trying to blame the 980,000 people who are short of food around the world on climate change .
Never mind that bastard Putin’s war on the Ukraine that has disrupted grain supply’s to Africa.
Never mind Urea a nitrogenous fertilizer increasing in price by 300% in the last 2 years.
She wouldn’t dare mention that on being elected Prime NUT of New Zealand that she had a nuclear moment and banned all further oil and gas exploration off New Zealands coast .
She should know but would not admit that natural gas is esential for the manafacture of nitrogenous fertilizer that is the only way that 8 billion people in the world can be fed.
No mention of the shipping disruption that has increased container rates by 600% mainly because of Covid lock downs in China holding up loaded ships plus a shortage of containers where they are required .
NO NO NO just blame climate change .
It is not the climate that has changed .
Governments have to be changed to come to their sense before there is wide spread hunger which is just starting to happen .
Change has to happen NOW to provide this essential fertilizer
How many millions will die before the idiots in charge admit that they need natural gas to make urea to feed half of the worlds population.
“The UN has stated that no country should take action to reduce emissions THAT might affect food production .”
Aside from all the very valid points that you have raised that make a mockery of the above statement, here in Australia prime agricultural land is where renewables are being installed. Australia has a total of only 6% arable land. Meat and agricultural produce has been a huge export for us too.
It’s the left’s anti capitalist agenda – nothing to do with climate.
Sweden have scrapped their environment department.
If Co2 was the cause of this alleged imminent apocalypse why did they not go all out for nuclear power?
The only known, reliable zero Co2 power source?
If they ignore the obvious solution, what do they really want?
A) Economic Turmoil
B) Financial Collapse
C) Capitalism’s destruction
D) Wealth Transfer (into their pockets)
E) Geopolitical Upheaval
F) All of the Above
G) Rapid Population decline
I think you missed that one Bryan.
And total control of the surviving population.
Yup, that’s the main impetus rho. It’s dictatorial POWER that they want the most.
CO2, not Co2 (which is cobalt).
Or CO₂ even…
And not to be confused with C02 which can be a Peugeot bicycle, a Samson pencil condenser microphone, a BETAFPV drone camera, etc.
They want your undying obedience.
Obedience – certainly.
Undying – ahh, not so much.
They want a LOT of people to die, quickly.
Not them, of course. They’re [self-anointed] elite, aren’t they.
That’s the problem – they know what they DON’T want BUT they don’t know what they DO want!
What I hate about all these cprotaganists is that they are all such monumental hypocrites, only the mentally subnormal would believe them.
And isn’t it AMAZING just how many mentally subnormal people there are out there.
That is what I have been posting here for years .Why not Nuclear?.
Not one of the trolls have ever tried to answer
This is not science, this is globalist propaganda.
Build nuclear power plants and solve the “problem” tomorrow.
Keep burning coal, and the problem will be similar to that of the past 10,000,000 years.
No, forget that, just get rid of the stupid Net Zero-AGW alarmist propaganda, show the real science that relegates CO2 from any source to be only a very minor player in modern global warming, if only due to its current saturated ability to absorb Earth’s IR towards space.
The obvious solution is to bring back reliable cheaper fossil fuel generation- problem solved!
Idealist! We would also benefit from the extra growth in plants from the CO2 they love.
Germany, under pressure from their Green movement, has already shuttered their nuclear facilities … to meet demand, in the face of Ukraine outfall, they are now recommissioning coal fured plants … not sure the nuks CAN be recommissioned.
I see two trigger words Oil and Profit.
Any organisation (The Guardian) or any individual (too many to list) that declares their imaginary problem is real, will invoke ever more desperate solutions that never impact the imaginary problem they have declared, for obvious reasons.
For the rest of us, i.e. those who consider a world average atmospheric surface temp of under 15 Deg. C is too cold for comfort without available energy to sustain us in higher latitudes. Well, we would love to see the current minor warming increase by another half a degree C, again for obvious reasons.
The alarmists are telling us we have already gained one whole degree C since the 1850 i.e. the end of the little ice age. I think that is about right and the cyclical warming since then has resulted in an average temperature of 15 degrees C. Still too cold for comfort, for most of us.
These alarmists are trying to dial up the anxiety because another half a degree C rise will in their opinion, be past a point of environmental destruction? There is no study showing when temperatures were many degrees higher than they are today, the world came to an end.
In fact it is clear from the historic proxy data, the world was more environmentally positive to life and plant growth in general during past warm periods.
The proposed cure the Guardian is advancing to solve their imaginary problem will definitely have a severe result for life on Earth, particularly human life….
I think it’s the case that without heat, clothes and shelter most of the world is currently uninhabitable for humans. Even with two or three degrees Celsius warming life would be difficult outside the tropics without these three things
Greentards hate life.
There has been a breakdown – inside the heads of vaaaaaast numbers of people.
The reason is very simple – Ehrlich’s Prediction came true.
Not in the here-today-gone-tomorrow mountains of corpses overblown apocalyptic Hollywood style visions you have inside your head when you think of his name, but it still happened
And if no one person beautifully exemplifies that, it is the current President of the USA. Next would be BpJo (as was) followed by the soon to be 25% of everybody who will have ‘dementia‘ listed as The Primary Cause of their demise.
But before that, you get junk science, junk politics, junk baby-making and epic paranoia, occasioning constant and increasing outbreaks of panic.
Yes OK it may not seem like that, but when ‘Governments’ panic it is a slo-mo and lumbering thing.
But it is still panic
We are in the process of doing something soooo very dumb as to wipe ourselves out – when Ehrlich’s prediction will reach its widely imagined climax
Just for the record… How many climate “tipping points” have we been warned about since 1990?
tipping points and
“worse than we thoughts” too
More tipping points than tripping points.
Am I reading this right? The excessive profits from fossil fuels should be taxed to help the global population weather the post Covid inflation around the world? If they end fossil fuel what will they tax instead to help the struggling world population?
Fossil fuel=bad and also fossil fuel tax=good.
These are not serious people.
Climate Comedy Central.
Climate Comedy Central Party
Oh yes, they most certainly are serious people. Illogical, misinformed, deluded but very serious.
The Guardian, the most laughably dishonest birdcage liner available.
The Guardian appears to be on course for an irreversible breakdown too.
We should be so lucky.
The Guardian no longer publishes its circulation figures, presumably out of embarrassment.
Of course it’s getting warmer. In the last 550 million years the earth has had ice at both poles for just 9% of the time.
So – can we all just move on now, please?
Estimated to have ice at both poles for at least the next 65 million years.
We all need to be very worried.
According to some Greens, when CO2 reaches 500 ppm, there will be no Oxygen left to breathe.
Green policies are based on this model.
You will no doubt have a few more chances to avoid a subscription to The Guardian
The Guardian is close to an irreversible mental breakdown and shows no sign of getting a grip
That’s the real story.
They say Boris is going to the COP The Guardian knows where the blame lies
“The prime minister’s decision to shun the climate talks is a disgrace. Britain started this crisis; it should be helping end it”
Britain started the revolution that created the modern world we live in. Ungrateful or what?
The UK had the world’s first commercial oil industry. We should be tearing down statues to Jame “Paraffin” Young* as a start to our contrition.
*Does anyone know of anyone, his name is not well known. This plaque in Bathgate and this bust on Undiscovered Scotland are about the total I know of.
Doesn’t their history begin around 1950?
Interesting point with Rishi Sunak – he’s U-turned on Truss’ lifting the fracking moratorium but he also appears to have done a U-turn on Truss’ easing of onshore windfarm permits as well. It’s slightly unclear but he does seem to manifesto pledge of not allowing the construction of new onshore installations.
Doh missed out a couple of words – he does appear to be sticking to the Conservative manifesto pledge of not allowing the construction of new onshore windfarms.
Soaring oil prices are the inevitable result of the cuts in new drilling urged by Carrington and his chums
Now let me see….Guardian reporting on very last chance with irreversible climate dooming….oh that’s right…. the 27th COP knees-up in Egypt. Yogi Berra eat your words!
To the Grauniad the Glasgow COP 26 was the very last chance with irreversible climate dooming and next years COP 28 will also be the very last chance too.
Humans have NO effect on climate changes.
Well, not measurable, anyway.
We’re already there. Look at the massive humanitarian disaster unfolding in Europe this winter created by the perverse enrgy policies of climate zealots and their useful, idiots in government. That’s a real man-made existential crisis, unlike the catastrophic anthropogenic
climate changeglobal warming myth.
In order to save the planet I decided to deprive myself of a trip to the COP 27.
I’ve given Greta my proxy because they all deserve her.
we’ve been warned : any day , any hour , any minute now the planet could cross the final Tipping Point and enter into Never Never land .
“…the planet could cross the latest final Tipping Point…”
That’s funny, the theory of catastrophic CO2 warming is the entire moral justification for the Great Reset.
Wouldn’t it be something to see 24/7 news coverage of climate catastrophe to spur the masses into collective action to save the planet? Such a planetary emergency would also justify cracking down on science deniers and those who spread misinformation, which misinformation would not be so much a threat to democracy (as it is now) as a quickly-morphed threat to necessary collective action.
Soon, people will stop talking about democracy anyhow and start talking about the necessity of collective action for the greater good. Sometimes tyranny is necessary to save future generations.
The Title of this should be:
World Close to: Irreversible COP# Breakdown
I thought they wanted to defund the police?
Oh no, climate breakdown! Anyway, last week…
Best song to accompany the breakdown:
Grace Jones – Breakdown (U.S. Single Edit) – YouTube
I would say the best album – musically speaking at least – would be Nektar’s 1975 classic “Recycled”
Great musicians – don’t tell the greenies about it…
Here’s part 1
Parts 2 and 3 are on youtube.
R.E.M. It’s the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine).
Here’s some comedy gold, including a photo of people enjoying themselves at the beach on a nice warm day. Scary caption though;
“Climate change is affecting the surfing schedule at some beaches”
You can relax though, quaking, terrified surfers. There are climate resilience toolkits for that sort of thing.
“very, very close to irreversible changes … time is really running out very, very fast”. Again? How many times have we heard this over the past two decades?
Two? Hasn’t it been more like three and a half?
Change the plot to a semi-log y-axis…
Sounds like typical Grauniad fear-mongering drivel they publish every year preceding a COP shindig.
Same playbook. Same irresponsible climate ‘experts’ repeating the same lies.
I’m convinced that Damian Carrington suffers from The Psychology of Doom
Emission rise since 1984 is completely caused bij China’s increasing coal use.
‘Stranded assets!’ They know their stuff at the Guardian.
The only tipping point we are approaching is the next glacial period. Avert the next ice age – burn more coal!
Sadly there is insufficient fossil fuel available for this, even if we burn the lot.
And all these empty promises are costing way too much. We cannot afford to continue.
It’s worse than we thought… again!
I keep waiting for my tomatoes to grow better because of those increasing nighttime temperatures tomatoes need to set fruit. Its been 30 years now and I still need to plant them in the greenhouse for reliable results.
This article is primarily about the oil company profits.
Inflaming the idiotic that the evil corporations are profiting from our destruction.
World close to ‘irreversible’ climate breakdown
The world is close to ‘irreversible liberty breakdown and enslavement to the Globalists Totalitarian State.
The Faceless Cultural Elite Ruling Class Vision is a World Population between 3 and 4 Billion, with a fossil fuel allotment per household for all 2nd class Citizens in a 2 class planet.
World: Guardian Close to “Irreversible Propaganda Breakdown”
Johan Rockström, aka Rockis or Stor-Greta (Big Greta) is infamously known in Sweden for being a totally rabid doomsday prophet. Please don’t trust.
“oil firms report astronomical profits”
As a percentage, if oil company profits bother greenies, they should be totally berserk, literally apoplectic over the profitability of the tech sector and pharmaceuticals. The only reason oil profits in absolute terms are high is that they are providing an essential commodity that is in high demand, even by the greenies, and the lunatic left is meanwhile doing all that they can to suppress the industry and reduce supply.
Do these people calling for fossil fuel divestment not realize they’re just selling their stocks to someone else, for THEIR profit?
Another year, another (one of many) recycled dire warning of imminent disaster if we do not immediately slash fossil fuel use.
Just change the date and deadline and post again next year.
All the “very very” stuff amuses me. There was a Mel Brooks movie imagining a crooked mental hospital called “The Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very Very Nervous.” The jumpsuits the patients/inmates wore had “PIVVN” stenciled on them in big letters. Just the thing for the COP27 delegates.
New Ice Age (colder) Global Warming (warmer) Climate Change (oh you’re really getting hot now) Hotter, HOTTER! (man you are burning up!)
World: I’m not dead yet? This is getting boring.
What would anyone expect from the Guardian in the first place? It carefully downplays any mention of the fact that fossil fuels currently still provide 812% of the world’s energy supply; instead, it recycles the old sky-is-falling song-and-dance routine that it guarantees to feature almost monthly.
We should ask Algore…he can tell us all about tipping points and Arctic ice and sea level rise and…
The atmospheric CO2 increase according to the accompanying graph was 80ppm which is 0.00008 percent of the atmosphere which is read as eight-thousandths of one percent. A realistic graph of such an increase would resemble a flat line.
I am looking forward to receiving my BP and Shell dividends. I have even found out that as a Shell Energy customer and Drivers Club member I can link the accounts and save 3% at the pumps.
They are all a broken record.
