COMING SOON: Commenting here will require registration

First, don’t panic – we are going to make this easy. Starting About November 7th/8th, commenting on WUWT will require you to be a registered user. Read on for the hows and whys.

For over 15 years, WUWT has been open to commenting by anyone. That had both good and bad aspects to it.

The good was obvious – anyone could immediately comment by simply placing their email address and name/handle into the comment box. The first comment required approval, after that comments went unfettered provided the commenter didn’t use any of the prohibited words or phrases that most platforms already flag as inappropriate.

The bad was not so obvious – and appeared mostly behind the scenes at the moderation level. Through the years we have fought with some nefarious people hell-bent on disrupting this forum doing things like using fake email addresses, spoofing other identities to get past moderation, (in particular, one well-known climate troll from Oregon has been caught and warned dozens of times, and is banned), and then we have the “bots” – which are getting worse daily.

A recent WUWT article noted this:

We are being spammed by an extremely clever and aggressive spambot.

The bot uses several techniques to spoof users but is trying a new one today.

Then there’s Twitter, which has millions of “bots” estimated to be somewhere between 5% (according to Pre-Elon Twitter) and as much as 20% by other estimates.

How many bots do we have on WUWT? Well, there could be dozens to hundreds. Some people, like “griff” act like bots, where they throw up some cryptic or inane comment, and then never respond to replies to it. But, we don’t really know a total bot count.

What we do know, is that it is getting worse, and as the climate alarmist establishment gets even more zealous, trying to make people believe there is a “climate crisis”, our workload to weed out false commentary from bots and other fakes has increased significantly.

When I started WUWT in 2006 the Internet was a different entity. Now, it’s a climate war zone, and we have to harden the fort against daily attacks. I’ll point out that almost any other website today that has user interaction requires registration – we are just late to the party.

As I first said, “we are going to make this easy.” Here’s how.

We have a process by which we are going to use some automation assistance to help our valid pre-existing users get registered. I don’t want to give the details, because that will tip our hand to the bots and the bullies. Let’s just say, you’ll be hearing more soon.

For reference, here are some WUWT statistics as of this writing:

  • 28,652 Posts

Thanks to all of you for making WUWT the most-viewed (and likely most-commented) climate related website in the world.

-Anthony

UPDATE: Some folks have jumped to erroneous conclusions about what registration here will require.
All that will be required is two items you supply now – a name/handle and and email address, and additionally, a password of your choosing.

Passwords are encrytped – only you will know it. – Anthony

Willing to take that risk, meiggs, to ensure that the truth gets out there. If only half the population of the country is skeptical about the AGW…ahh ACC ruling class narrative they are going to have a helluva time rounding up more than a 150 million people.

They can’t control the southern border for cripe sake and that is only a 20 percent of 150 mil and most of the 20% are skeptics themselves because they have been living with global warming and know its about latitude not CO2.

Ever since I commented on the first blog, I have used my real name and only my real name. Nobody told me I had to invent a user name, or else.
Interestingly, I wrote a few hundred letters to the editor, most were punblished, 1980-2000 era before blogging, but I chose to use a pseudonym. Despite that, we received death threats then, had our car released to roll down the driveway hill into the house, had a device looking like a bomb put on our outsise barbeque table, more more.

It takes a bit of guts to call out the nonsense, but it has to be done.

The northeastern US has more than their share of climate fanatics, however they may have a Winter this year with a shortage of petroleum distillates. In other words, heating oil shortages. I doubt that they have sufficient natural gas capacity to make up for the shortage of heating oil. The direct cause of these shortages is the policies of certain state governments in their vain efforts to change the average temperature 100 years in the future.

Should we have massive deaths this winter from fossil fuel shortages, the climate fanatics could find that their thinking is no longer in the mainstream.

FFS. Get out the 1960’s and into the real world. Why are you so terrified of Russia?

It has half the US population, one tenth of it’s technology (at best) and has somehow ground the world to a halt by sending 160,000 soldiers into a nondescript, flat broke, corrupt, small, eastern European country.

The global response is on a par with the privations of WW2 when the civilised west fought the evils of Nazi Germany and Japan across the whole of Europe and much of Asia.

And that’s before it ‘blew up’ its own gas pipeline it derived enormous profit from and was its major bargaining chip.

But you don’t smell a rat.

I’ll not take sides in this little kerfuffle except … (there’s always an exception)

  • Russia has lots of nukes and Putin likes threatening their use.
  • Russia and Putin have a long long history of sending messages, from before murdering Trotsky in Mexico City with an icepick to radiation-tipped umbrellas. I would not put it past Putin to blow up his own pipelines as a message once their commercial use is impossible.

Don’t mean to say Putin did blow them up, only that it’s as plausible as any other likely suspect.

It would have made a huge difference if US just accepted Russia’s request to join Nato in 2000, and not stirring up (and financing) the coup in 2014.

Anyway, their climate data set is more trustworthy than Nato’s (read: US’) empty promise to not expand to the East. Putin did warn already since 2008 that Ukraine will be not Nato member, like Biden warned already there will be no NorthStream anymore if Russia invades.

We should focus on climate wars, not war climate.

I don’t believe the Biden regime is competent to pull it off. More importantly, Joe Biden is on record as opposing the bin Laden raid for fear of political blowback should it have failed.

Now it is possible the pipeline bombing was a Russian false flag, but how would Putin benefit? Ask yourself, who benefits and who had means, motive and opportunity? It’s hard to see Russia benefiting.

Nobody has raised the possibility of non-state actors. The climate activists are bankrolled by billionaires. Perhaps climate radicals want to force Europe away from natural gas?

That is not a benefit. That is a tactic. How does it benefit Putin to destroy his means of selling natural gas to Europe? Does it give him more leverage in settling his Ukrainian war debacle is his favor, or does it give him less?

I’m not saying Russia didn’t sabotage the pipeline, I’m wondering how it could work in Russia’s favor. A Russian false flag operation, that is, Russian forces destroying the pipeline and blaming Russia’s enemies, is possible. But it’s a greatly miscalculated move as it did not rally Russians to the cause or win other nations to Russia’s side.

IMO, the pipeline gave Russia leverage to coerce Ukraine’s allies to force a negotiated peace.

In 1939 it pretty much was as minor a kerfuffle as the 2022 invasion of Ukraine is today. All the reasons Putin apologists spout for why other nations should not care about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could equally have been stated about Germany’s invasion of Poland at the time. And remember, it’s not just about this “minor kerfuffle”, this is just the latest “minor kerfuffle” in a long series of “minor kerfuffles” that Putin has been responsible for. How many countries does Putin have to invade before other nations are allowed to care and stand against his unwarranted aggression? Because for Putin apologists, it seems, he can invade as many as he wants and other nations should just shut up and let him.

“A nondescript, flat broke, corrupt, small, eastern European country” – the people of Ukraine won’t share your view.
Putin is an ex-KGB tyrant who is responsible for the murder of thousands of people who just wanted a normal life. He has brought destruction on a huge scale to the cities of Ukraine.
My own family was scarred by the Russian communists when they invaded the Baltic States prior to WWII, with a family member arrested and executed (murdered) on trumped-up charges as an ‘enemy of the state’.
This is the reality of the sort of person in charge of Russia.

Likewise – even way back when I first commented here, I avoided providing valid email addresses to any registration process. In the corporate world, you know that no matter the promises/good intentions of the present owners/operators, some future owner may decide to use the information in other ways.

Some future court order, some future hacker, some future regulator, will get hold of the information.

no I don’t… but my time is limited and I’m in a different time zone – and you know quite well you moderate my comments and they are delayed appearing.

By the time my comment appears and it gets to the time of day I’m free to comment, the discussion frequently has moved on and commenting on something many items and a day down the list often isn’t worth it.

Not to mention 95% of all replies I get are just insults and not genuine debate.

Aren’t there several hundred people still in jail for protesting on 6th January 2021? Biden just needs time to catch up. Did he have no options and the military folks killed in the Afghanistan fiasco aren’t blood on his hands?

Obama didn’t invade, he just sent hundreds of done strikes, some at people who supposedly were citizens of the usa.

When commies were ‘getting too close to us’ (usa) in the 80s, wasn’t there iran-contra? If it had been Mexico instead of Nicaragua?

So when a western- backed political coup lead by the cia subverts and overthrows the Russian- friendly leadership of Ukraine, putin did not stand by. This was on his doorstep.
He did not start the aggression, he responded. Decisively.

If Putin is a mass murderer what do you describe Zelensky and his predecessor as?

Zelensky has turned down every offer of peace talks by Russia and invited none himself.

I daresay your accusation of mass murder could be levelled against NATO forces in Iraq and Afghanistan where over one million people have died due to the conflict, precipitated by false accusations of WMD’s.

Frankly the best people can muster against leaders who don’t toe the western line is to accuse them of everything the west has done many times over.

I understand you like to pretend that this is happening, because you like the puzzlely part of science, but your not wanting to use the additional facts that us in the echo chamber use to refute global warming/climate change, man made anyways. We have been coming out of a ice age for a long time, the ice has melted and that would increase the rate of warming. Many different factors go into what is causing the changes in our enviroment. We here at WUWT, who make comments and post articles, are trying to help the world, not by shutting down our industries, but by keeping them open.

It’s a shame that actual total numbers are kept secret. Does it really matter for advertising purposes?

Dear Griff,
Years ago I liked your scientific approach, even when I disagreed…

But now your comments are from a political nature rather than science or engineering.

Example: explain why .04% of the atmosphere overwhelms the largest heat store/engine…. Water vapor… And how human destruction of forest and wetlands has nothing to do with the root causes of so called climate change… Or how a little problem like poor weather collection sites cause wrong measurements, therefore corrupting the entire discussion…

I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but I do not (and would prefer not to) have any interaction whatsoever on the (anti-)social media stuff. I do e-mail, and that’s about it. Don’t even have one of those ubiquitous ‘demon devices’ which are mis-named “cell phones”, so as long as nothing more than an e-mail address is needed, I’ll be OK.

Thanks for all you do, Anthony and Charles (and any of the other unsung hero moderators).

I totally agree. However, I had to change cell phone providers the other day for two flip-phones, mine and my better half’s. Got that done easily but tried to place an order with one of the major on-line retailers a couple of days later. Turns out their two stage authentication feature wasn’t designed to handle phone number changes via flip-phone. Only thing their customer support could come up with was to cancel the accounts, wait some defined length of time then create two new accounts. So, I only did the first step of that suggestion.

As long as the upgrades here don’t step into obvious architectural holes like that (I suspect due to offshoring) I would have absolutely no problem registering. I’m suprised it hasn’t been implemented sooner.

Griff, I think Anthony has got better things to do with his time.
That your twaddle has been tolerated here for so long here ought to give you pause for thought.

In some ways it is quite sad that you are unable to tell the difference between good and bad people. Perhaps you need to change the circle of people you mix with and get your pigeon-holed opinions from.

One constant with leftists, they always accuse others of doing what they have been doing.

BTW, why not wait until you know what information they are going to ask for before declaring that it is too much information.
Beyond that, are you accusing Anthony of being some kind of arch-conservative?

Some of my good friends are right thinking reasonable people….But they don’t go round say things like “One constant with leftists, they always accuse others of doing what they have been doing.” That’s just way out on a limb stuff. And it never occurs to MarkW he could well be describing himself.

I haven’t seen any. While almost every prominent socialist specializes in it.

For example, every Democrat is united in declaring that it is Republican rhetoric that has poisoned the air in the US. Completely ignoring the fact that the have spent the last decade demonizing every who dares to disagree with whatever they are pushing.

Old drunk Hillary is already on the record denying the results of the 2024 election. She blew past projection in 2015 and transitioned to full-throated criminality; but the Squat are all taking her poisonous tactics for Gospel on how to behave in Congress. I see no similar intensity/insanity on the right.

Hillary Clinton hasn’t been objectively investigated. Given the various things she’s done, any objective and unbiased investigation would have resulted in charges. From tampering with evidence in the Nixon inestigation to sharing government information from a non government email server then deleting all of the emails after a court order to keep them, her hands are not clean.
