Somalia Says Drought Is Due to Climate Change, As They Demand Billions

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Are the droughts in Somalia due to climate change?

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/oct/10/uk-lost-leadership-role-somalia-famine-drought-envoy

Inevitably the long running drought in Somalia has led to claims that climate change is responsible.

The first thing to note though is that the direct cause has been La Nina, which is now into its third years and invariably leads to drought in that part of the world.

But what are the longer term trends?

According to World Bank data, rainfall trends have been steadily increasing since the 1970s and 80s, the time of the Sahel drought which led to the Band Aid concerts, and which were the direct result of global cooling.

Over the longer period little has changed, though occasionally we get exceptionally wet years.

However the World Bank data is incomplete, particularly in the early years, where some regional data is estimated. And, of course, country averages may cover up the areas suffering most.

According to the BBC, the region suffering most from drought is just to the west of Mogadishu, known as the Bay region:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-63116210

https://climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org/country/somalia/trends-variability-historical

The World Bank has good data for Bay, going back to 1901, and this actually shows a very similar pattern to the national data. Note that rainfall totals are higher than the national ones, which are lower because of the desert region to the north.

https://climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org/user/login?destination=/country/somalia/trends-variability-historical&autologout_timeout=1

Undoubtedly the fact that La Nina is now in its third year has exacerbated the drought, but population growth, a ten-fold increase since 1950, is the main reason why droughts like these, which are perfectly natural and common events, now have such a human impact. The long running civil war, of course, has hardly helped matters either.

Somalia? Isn’t that the country where pirates demand huge ransoms for captured ships and crews? They have form and in fact they seem to have been doing this for centuries.

Yup. The pirates have just gone establishment, and are now trying to extort a ransom from the Climate Slush Fund ™ instead.

Excellent! Except for the foul language, that was RIGHT ON THE MONEY (and the problem isn’t so much that food (better than money!) is being handed out, it is that the food does not reach the people the donors bought intended it for)).

“who is Bob Geldof?” I queried…. ah….

Here’s little bit about what happened to the money…

*** “People are dying because of their government,” says Jason Clay, an anthropologist studying famine in Ethiopia. “And what groups like Live Aid are doing is helping the government set up a system that is going to cause people to die for decades to come.”

***

In London’s West End, Live Aid’s executive director, Penny Jenden, is near exhaustion. After several weeks in Africa, she’s just emerged from an all-day advisory session, sifting through the more than 600 proposals for projects to be funded out of Live Aid’s enormous bankroll.

***

As Jenden speaks, Bob Geldof, Midge Ure, (cowriter of “Do They Know it’s Christmas?”), and others in Live Aid are posing in Sport Aid T-shirts at an athletic track in south London.

***

“Aid has always got political ramifications,” she says. “Just as famine has. It’s not just a matter of feeding people and that’s where the story ends.”

Asked what it would take to bring the starvation of millions in Ethiopia to an end, Jenden faces a hard truth and says, “Well, you would either have to be

the Ethiopian government or

the Russians.”

Yes
In the last 50 years, famines are entirely political not natural.
They are tools of governance

And any famines that arise from insane energy and fertilizer policy currently being enacted will be completely manmade as well.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt.
Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit.

So, the CO2 rate will go up even faster, eh? And the observed surface temperature will almost certainly continue to do this…. 🤨

Amazing how easy it is to encourage nations to jump on board with climate change. Climate change probably turned the forest, fertile fields and grasslands of Somalia to the desert it is today. Somalia surely must have a record of that to justify their claim.

Somalia, pirates, Blackhawk Down, average IQ 71, despite increasing rainfall they can’t manage to deal with the normal drought cycles? They lost support from Britain (maybe something to do with those pirate deals?), and now they figured out that the bandwagon for them to jump on is the CAGW reparations? Beam me up, Scotty, there’s no intelligent life on this planet.

The rainfall graph shows that 250 to 300 mm per year is all that Somalia can expect even in a good year .
That is not very much at all. In August the Nelson region of New Zealand had 172 mm over 3 days
Farmers and growers would have to make the best use of the rain to grow enough food to feed the population of the country .Which I would say would be an impossibility with such a low rain fall
I ask any one who might know the answer . How with all the wars and droughts how does a poor dry country increase its population by 8 times in 72 years?.
From 2.2 million in 1950 to 17.6 million today .
New Zealand had a population in 1950 of 1.9 million and now in 2022 the population is of 5.18 million with a lot of immigration adding to the numbers.
According to New Zealand Trade and Enterprise New Zealand grown produce feeds 40 million people .
Our communist prime minister Jacinda is hell bent on reducing this trade in the name of climate change .The methane tax will destroy the viability many sheep and cattle farms which will be converted to carbon forestry .
When will people wake up what these so called leaders are doing to the world .

Looks like they are jumping on the globalist extortion bandwagon. This flagrant extortion attempt might be met with being ignored if there is an actual crisis on a boy who cried wolf basis.

Sorry, but the funds were already spent on beach resort reservations, carbon capture schemes, climate poetry events, climate media ad buys, and John Kerry’s jet fuel bill. Given the reputation for government inefficiency and corruption in developing world countries, billion dollar donations to fight climate change would be a classic case of throwing good money after bad. I’d like to see a nation-by-nation study of where all the foreign aid has gone over the years. I’d bet that most of it went into the pockets of autocratic leaders and a good chunk of the rest into propping up their police forces and militaries so that they could stay in power. But climate change? Just a minor inconvenience that has to be lived with.

October 28, 2022 5:44 pm

Lets ignore the fact that the country has been a failed state for over 30 years. Lets ignore the fact that the area is a naturally arid environment. If Somalia is complaining about not enough rain, but has experienced modest increase rainfall since 1970 during the raise in CO2 from developed country activities, should Somalia be compensating developed countries for the benefit? I am not seriously proposing that but it makes just as much sense as developing countries expecting to be paid for imaginary loss and damage from imaginary CAGW when real observations show no significant adverse changes in climate metrics that can be blamed on human activity. The international ambulance chasers are never going to stop till we make clear this is going nowhere.

Drought or no drought that is not the issue this guy is whining because Briton is no longer Somalia’s number one sugar daddy.
