Are the droughts in Somalia due to climate change?
Inevitably the long running drought in Somalia has led to claims that climate change is responsible.
The first thing to note though is that the direct cause has been La Nina, which is now into its third years and invariably leads to drought in that part of the world.
But what are the longer term trends?
According to World Bank data, rainfall trends have been steadily increasing since the 1970s and 80s, the time of the Sahel drought which led to the Band Aid concerts, and which were the direct result of global cooling.
Over the longer period little has changed, though occasionally we get exceptionally wet years.
However the World Bank data is incomplete, particularly in the early years, where some regional data is estimated. And, of course, country averages may cover up the areas suffering most.
According to the BBC, the region suffering most from drought is just to the west of Mogadishu, known as the Bay region:

The World Bank has good data for Bay, going back to 1901, and this actually shows a very similar pattern to the national data. Note that rainfall totals are higher than the national ones, which are lower because of the desert region to the north.
Undoubtedly the fact that La Nina is now in its third year has exacerbated the drought, but population growth, a ten-fold increase since 1950, is the main reason why droughts like these, which are perfectly natural and common events, now have such a human impact. The long running civil war, of course, has hardly helped matters either.
Somalia? Isn’t that the country where pirates demand huge ransoms for captured ships and crews? They have form and in fact they seem to have been doing this for centuries.
Yup. The pirates have just gone establishment, and are now trying to extort a ransom from the Climate Slush Fund ™ instead.
It’s a desert! Drought is normal in a desert.

Excellent! Except for the foul language, that was RIGHT ON THE MONEY (and the problem isn’t so much that food (better than money!) is being handed out, it is that the food does not reach the people the donors bought intended it for)).

They only sample when the breezes are coming off the ocean. Even if Mauna Loa erupts it won’t impact the curve. If it becomes impossible to take uncontaminated samples, then the curve will end.
It must be due to climate change. After all, aren’t all natural and man-made disasters caused by it these days anyway? So why not volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis?

Just noticing that the left side is in mm. Each 100 mm is slightly under 4 inches. In reality, not much variation.
The rainfall graph shows that 250 to 300 mm per year is all that Somalia can expect even in a good year .
That is not very much at all. In August the Nelson region of New Zealand had 172 mm over 3 days
Farmers and growers would have to make the best use of the rain to grow enough food to feed the population of the country .Which I would say would be an impossibility with such a low rain fall
I ask any one who might know the answer . How with all the wars and droughts how does a poor dry country increase its population by 8 times in 72 years?.

New Zealand had a population in 1950 of 1.9 million and now in 2022 the population is of 5.18 million with a lot of immigration adding to the numbers.

If the leadership of any country believes that production of carbon dioxide is a problem I have just one question.
Why haven’t they banned unnecessary sources of CO2, such as tourism to their country?
Sorry, but the funds were already spent on beach resort reservations, carbon capture schemes, climate poetry events, climate media ad buys, and John Kerry’s jet fuel bill. You are still welcome to stand in line behind countries claiming rising seas despite land subsidence evidence. Do you have any lithium to offer in trade or child labor?
Given the reputation for government inefficiency and corruption in developing world countries, billion dollar donations to fight climate change would be a classic case of throwing good money after bad. I’d like to see a nation-by-nation study of where all the foreign aid has gone over the years. I’d bet that most of it went into the pockets of autocratic leaders and a good chunk of the rest into propping up their police forces and militaries so that they could stay in power. But climate change? Just a minor inconvenience that has to be lived with.

If Somalia is complaining about not enough rain, but has experienced modest increase rainfall since 1970 during the raise in CO2 from developed country activities, should Somalia be compensating developed countries for the benefit? I am not seriously proposing that but it makes just as much sense as developing countries expecting to be paid for imaginary loss and damage from imaginary CAGW when real observations show no significant adverse changes in climate metrics that can be blamed on human activity. The international ambulance chasers are never going to stop till we make clear this is going nowhere.

Drought or no drought that is not the issue this guy is whining because Briton is no longer Somalia’s number one sugar daddy. Maybe if Somalia could show vast improvements from the charity Briton has shown the Brits might reconsider. Why should any country throw money down a bottomless pit? No improvement, no more money. That sounds reasonable.
Like many African countries, Somalia’s population is doubling every 20 years. So whatever food they grow has more mouths to feed. So…. blame climate! And forget about those pesky tribal wars as well. Just blame climate!
