Sweden’s new right-wing government has sparked an outcry after scrapping the Ministry of Environment in a move the opposition has branded “devastating”.
Previously, the ministry was a high-profile stand-alone department with a minister in the cabinet, but now it will operate as part of another ministry instead.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson unveiled his new cabinet on Tuesday, and although he did appoint a Minister of Climate and Environment — 26-year-old Liberal MP Romina Pourmokhtari— she will work under Christian Democrat leader Ebba Busch, the new Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, rather than lead her own ministry.
The leader of the Swedish Greens, Per Bolund, noted that for the first time in 35 years Sweden would have no dedicated environment ministry.
“It is impossible to describe more clearly how little this government values the environment and the climate. This is a historic decision with devastating consequences for environmental issues”, said Bolund.
How dare they?
Has the pendulum began to swing less woke? Over here in Australia we had a netballer not wanting to wear the sponsors logo. The mining company pulled the entire $15M national sponsorship.
Well done Gina! When will these sportspeople understand that they are mere entertainers, and we are not interested in their political views?
Some guy refused to wear an LGBTQ+ flag on his uniform. Still on the entertainers should not be able to protest bandwagon?
Was LGBTQ+ paying his salary? Was he OK with the sponsor’s logo, regardless of the sponsor’s personal views? How was his contract worded?
All that may have some bearing on the arguments pro/con.

where do you draw the line? Should golfer’s take money from Saudi Arabia? Should the olympics be held in China? Personally I think the answer to both is ‘no’. And I think it is great to see that some people at least put their principles ahead of their wallet.

When Elsa Widding, with very high competence in climate science hold her initial speech as member in the Swedish parliament lots of mental fuses burned on the left (and right) side. A claim that the climate crisis lack scientific support and that we need to prioritize our community before virtue signaling has been heavy criticized. When the hysteric response past it will be interesting to follow the debate. As a politician on the winning side she will be allowed to debate and disarm the fearmongers.

It’s more than just the Green machine, Sweden has had it with outsiders trying to remake their society. Being nice to immigrants has cost them with increased crime, terrorism, sex crimes, while draining their treasuries with no return. Being nice to environmentalists has weakened their economy and altered their lifestyle. Their approach to Covid proved to be correct while the rest of the world chastised them. Sweden has awakened and said enough is too much and they’re taking their country back. Good for them.

Among many other stupid or malevolent things Richard Nixon did, establishing the EPA as a stand alone agency was one of the worst. Being a separate agency meant that “the environment” was never going to be protected enough, and that any sense of other goals being a higher priority was against their continued employment.
And giving the Chinese leadership respectability. I remember it clearly at the time and thought it was a bad idea. Nearly fifty years later the chickens are coming home to roost.
That wasn’t Nixon, it was our bettters in Congress who found cheap labor substitutes and comfortable investment partnerships in China. Nixon opened the door, but arguably was totally naive as to what would happen next.
Today, with their Most Favored Nation (no tax) status made permanent by Congress, you can buy American goods cheaper there than you can buy them here.

This is a good move. These useless ministries are home to the economy destroying woke progressives and serve no purpose other than to block useful development and substitute it with the opposite.
Let’s hope the new government has much success and continues to make rational decisions.

The Fair Tax must replace the income tax, the “prebate” only to go to US citizens.
In the UK, first terminate ALL of the employees of the BBC, sell all the buildings and transmission equipment and make it almost impossible for the left to re-create it when they get back in power.
I can’t find anywhere in the U.S. Constitution where Congress is given the right to take money from one class of people and give it to another class. The Supreme Court should declare all tax and transfer programs are unconstitutional. Charity should not be enforced. American’s are very charitable people, we’ll take care of those who really need it. Our economy needs those seven million non-working men between 18 and 54 to come back to the workplace, and they will live better, more fulfilling lives.

Sweden has been without a dedicated environment ministry for 1287 of the last 1322 years – or in fact 13987 of the last 14022 years. I think it will survive now, and of course it does still actually have an environment ministry.

If the Republican congress just refuses to increase the debt limit the cuts in spending by the Democrats controlled executive branch (President) will show the US voter their priorities. They will try to save every liberal full employment program.

It was the product of a series of writers, mostly French, wanting “democratic control” over the economy. Mussolini sold what was supposed to be a government run by labor union locals, the Fasci.
There are some subtle differences.
Communism is where everything is owned/run by the ‘commune’ for the good of ‘The People’
National Socialism is where everything is owned/run by the ‘state’ for the good of ‘The People’.
The irony that fans of these systems fail to admit is that ‘The People’ get little say in real terms.
In National Socialism there is the ruling party. In Communism there are the ruling committees. After all, someone needs to control the actual work, and since the workers are too busy working it may as well be them. Right?
This is what is often missed with Marx. He described a world where small business was simply wished out of existence and there were ‘only’ owners and workers. He decided that the workers should rise up and overthrow the owners.
Yet which of those two groups was he part of? Neither.
Marx was part of the third group who talked about things and wanted the system built back better so they they played a more active role. This is the major problem with Socialism – they want to reshape YOUR world, not theirs. If their revolution fails they go back to sleeping in a share house, while you now have no means of employment. No skin off their nose.

Good points. Like the term ‘liberal‘ as it is employed in the USA, when for we non-American English speakers, those to whom the label is applied seem to be anything but. Quite illiberal in fact in their opposition to free speech, open debate, and contrary opinions.
As was the intent. A humorist a few years back explained that these kinds of folks infiltrate a respected institution, take it, gut it, and wear its skin.. Some folks notice the rotting carcass and the wolf faster than others.

many of the “victories” claimed by EPA types were going to be done by industries and people anyway. It is not hard to contemplate niggly things that are wrong with your future at any time and then devise a body to make them happen faster or else face a penalty.
It is all part of this rotten business of too many people being paid to tel others what to do, while producing nothing of value themselves.
That EPA approach resembles 5 y o kids wishing for what they want for Christmas. What they get is controlled by what dad and mum can afford to pay atthe time.

Individuals are still able to make their own best decisions about protecting the environment. No need for yet another looming, lurching bureaucracy.
The environment in Sweden will continue to be just fine, even in the face of the abolition of the Ministry of the Environment. All over the World, people could discover that their environment, too, would continue just the same and just fine, even if they too, demolished their Departments of the Environment.
Probably far better without them, in fact!

Sweden has seen rapid temperature rises in its northern regions in recent years and some devastating forest fires (in some of the best managed forest in Europe).

There is no facepalm large enough to register this stupidity. Sweden has seen very little temperature rise, one bad forest fire in 2018 and very little since. In fact Sweden has been providing its firefighting units to Czech Republic and France in recent years.
And before you make any other demented comments, the 2018 wildfires have been attributed to a coordinated series of arson attacks both in cities and the countryside ahead of the general election.

I like the ministry definition and where Sweden places Energy with respect to government, with Business and Industry. That is where energy belongs, with business and industry. Defense must be involved also.

Hard to imagine that a group of people being moved to a different spot on the org chart as a great catastrophe. The empire builders wont be happy of course, but maybe they can do some work and prove their worth rather than building a fiefdom.
