Prince Harry was spotted arriving for a flight on a private jet to set off for a one-day polo match – before the aircraft sat idling on the tarmac for at least 30 minutes as it waited for his staff to arrive in a gas-guzzling SUV to drop off his polo kit.
The Duke of Sussex boarded the $9 million Bombardier Challenger 600 at a Santa Barbara airport around 11am on Wednesday to head to the event in Aspen to compete in a round robin tournament.
Harry, who regularly preaches his views about the ‘climate crisis’ hitting the world, arrived at the airport close to his $14million Montecito home in an electric Audi SUV.
But he then sat in the idling private jet for 30 minutes before the royal’s staff arrived with his polo gear in a black Range Rover at around 11.35am.

According to the Daily Mail, Prince Harry started his journey in the seaside down of Montecito, where he apparently owns a house – the same town Al Gore lived in. Presumably he wants a close up personal view of that rapid sea level rise climate worriers keep predicting.
The funniest part is Harry only had to wait half an hour in the jet, for the black Range Rover to make the trip by road with all his Polo gear, so it must have been a very short jet flight. The jet engine was kept idling while Prince Harry waited, presumably to power the air conditioner.
Prince Harry’s excuse for flying, when challenged, is he is worried about his family’s safety. But surely it would be cheaper and less CO2 intensive to just hire an extra bodyguard.
What can I say – obviously the climate cuts Prince Harry urges are only meant for the peasants. Ordinary people won’t get a pass, even if they believe they have a legitimate reason to fly. In our green future, only special people like Prince Harry will get a pass to break the rules.
Climate Warrior – or Worrier?
Harry is like every Green that I personally know. They all have carbon footprints enormously higher than mine. None of them behave as if there is a climate crisis. But they want all of the little people (i.e. everybody else) to curtail their lifestyles drastically. But their lifestyles will never be affected.
Don’t you just hate it when you forget your polo gear?

A chukka or chukker is a period in polo – the term comes from India.
Typical outdoor polo matches last six chukkas, although I’ve heard that in Argentina they last eight. In professional polo you get a fresh horse for each chukka, so it gets pricey. Amateur polo players often ride just one horse for their fun matches.
The Calgary Polo Club is one of the oldest in North America, reportedly started by ranchers and “remittance men”, younger sons of wealthy British families who chose to be cowboys during the week and play polo on the weekends.

Professional polo can be a dangerous game – in my very limited experience I’ve seen one pro struck in the face with a hard-hit ball and peeled off his horse at a full gallop – he did not regain consciousness in the half-hour we waited for the ambulance. My old friend Morris Palmer’s grandson was killed in 1992 playing at the Calgary club and one of the fields is named after him.
Does anyone know how the Royals play? It would seem that special safety rules must apply.
There don’t appear to be any special safety rules other than the usual security arrangements for public appearances. Of course anyone seriously going after William as they would any other player is likely to never play again in the UK – think the Black Prince in ‘A Knights Tale’ film.

Celebrity CO2 is quite different to Plebs CO2 and obviously must benefit the planet or they wouldn’t spread it so much would they?

It is more likely that the aircraft’s APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) was running to keep things nice and cool inside and power other systems on the aircraft. The APU runs on the same fuel as the engines but at a much lower rate … which is why it’s there.
Or they kept the engines idling because they expected to take off as soon as the Polo gear arrived, and it took a bit longer than expected. Either way, the optics are not good.
Because they did not want to cycle the engines off/on in a short time…

The unresolved issue is how the $9 million Bombardier Challenger 600 achieves its air conditioning for the passenger compartment.
If it does a tap off of the jet engine compressor stage (one or both engines), subsequently expanding that air across a heat exchanger for recirculating cabin air cooling loop—as is typically done on larger commercial passenger aircraft—that would require at least one engine running continuously.
The Challenger 600 MAY have an auxiliary tap off of compressor-stage gas from the much smaller APU gas turbine unit used to provide electrical powered when the aircraft is on the ground, or there may be a smaller electrically-powered A/C unit specific for this purpose . . . I simply do no know, and I don’t care to spend the time to research this.

You have twice stated as FACT that the engines were not running, just the APU.
Please provide a link to where you got that information.
Just stating your assumption is much like “Climate Science”.
There would be no ‘link’ available to verify this. I was just lending some clarity and reality to the article because I’m very familiar with that exact situation. The APU would be powered up to run the electrics and a/c etc, but the engines would certainly be off-they could not even load the bags or people (safely) with the #1 engine running and there’s no benefit to keeping them running while waiting for baggage. But to some reporter or whoever-the sound of the APU running sounds like ‘the engine were idling’ so that’s what makes the news.

Oh, I don’t know about that. I’ve been on quite a few commercial passenger jets that have “pushed back from the gate” at time of scheduled departure, only to then hold on the tarmac area away from the terminal gates waiting on taxi/departure clearance with at least one, if not two or more of their main engines running continuously.
And they did not call for an airport ground vehicle to come hook up to supply cabin HVAC, nor did the pilots turn off the main engines and rely solely on the plane’s onboard APU.
In some cases (esp. weather related delays), those ground holds exceeded the 30 minutes that Harry is reported to have waited.
I suspect other WUWT readers have experiences the same as mine.
BTW, almost all modern commercial jet aircraft use an electric starter (not a pneumatic starter) for their main engine(s). The electricity to power the starter comes from either an airport electrical supply cable used for that purpose, or from the aircraft’s onboard APU.
And then there is a well-known, but unmentionable, flag carrier that not only doesn’t run the engines to keep the cabin cool, or the perfectly good APU, or use ground power, at Heathrow. Don’t know why, but we don’t use that airline any longer.
Wrong, I have started thousands of jet engines and air is used to accelerate the engine before fuel is introduced. The APU is generally used to provide this air otherwise a ground cart is needed. Once one engine is started, cross bleed air can then be used for the other engines. Suggest you don’t be so dogmatic about things you know nothing about.

Almost all private and transport jets bigger than a super midsize use pneumatic starters.They use the APU or an air cart (if the APU is inop)for starting and could do a cross-bleed for the second engine if needed. It’s been like that since the 60’s. But yes, the new generation 787 is one modern exception.
Whilst it is true the B787 uses electric start most modern jet engines still require pneumatic air flow to start

“Larger Commercial Passenger Aircraft” all have, in my experience, APUs that provide power and bleed air for aircraft systems on the ground.
Many years ago, my company serviced a “corporate” Convair 440 (R-2800 radial engines) which had a small piston engine to power systems while on the ground. My lawn mower sounded more powerful than that thing but I’m sure that little “engine that could” cost many times the price of my mower.

We can turn the evil of The Goog against itself by going one better than what superficial searches reveal via its automatic ‘algore-ithms,’ when we undertake much more intensive searches using boolean search methods. I used to use DDG as my primary search engine, mainly due to their unfiltered, and therefore unbiased, results.
Then they chose to start filtering information about the Russia/Ukraine conflict, which was a total betrayal of those principles. I now use Startpage and still manage to get good results. (I realize that many of these use Bing or Google behind-the-scenes but MY interaction is kept limited). I have to admit that I still rely on google for maps, though.
I use Brave search which comes with the Brave browser
I use Duck and Safari when Duck fails me. I’d like to try Brave but don’t know if adding a third browser to my computer would be too much, or not. Any advice on that?
If its just for search, just change your default search engine on your favorite browser. But as for multiple browsers there’s no reason you can’t have a bunch. I used to run 5 when I was doing web programming with no issues.
Not especially impressed. DDG started out as an engine that didn’t scan people’s browsing history to filter its results, but as a commenter below notes, now it apparently does on controversial issues. Within one of my unrelated hobbies, I’ve seen how DDG cannot dredge uneven a quarter as much usable images of a particular rare collectible item I regularly look for, compared to Google image results. But I have tapped DDG when Google fails on something I know is out there, the most recent example is what I linked to in my latest GelbspanFiles post, where I wanted to illustrate how I knew I had a minimum of 3 prior references at my blog to Ross Gelbspan as a former “star blogger” at Desmogblog, but for some dumb reason, Google could only find one of those. (which turns out to be one DDG can’t find)
So, again, I advise to not shun Google because it is evil, go far deeper into it with site-specific searches or by putting key words within quote marks to pull the info kicking & screaming out of it that it tries to hide. Otherwise, until the other search engines can be proven to be as good as Google, you might be limiting yourself on what you can find.
I would prefer better friends than Google.

If I read the above correctly, Harry arrives at the airport local to his home in his all electric Audi SUV, but he/his handlers/his jet operators dispatched other person(s) in a separate fossil fuel-powered Range Rover SUV to pick up his polo gear.
Apparently, the Audi EV did not have the range to go back to Harry’s home and return to the airport with his polo gear.
It’s not like Harry wasn’t warned about such problems with EVs.

The way the succession works is that, if alive, Charles has to become King. He doesn’t have to stay King for long though, he can abdicate – I think that would be best for the UK all round; we’ve become used to having a monarch reigning for a long time.

Polo players need horses (plural!) and they don’t just borrow them. They own them, as in more than one. If you want to show the size of the jet set polo player’s carbon footprint, go beyond his SUV and private jet and find out how they’re transporting the horses.

The Range Rover wasn’t a Range Rover, it was an Audi E-Tron, no gas guzzling whatsoever.
As for the jet, if it was idling it was likely only one engine used to power the electrical system, and of course at idle it burns almost no fuel in idle as opposed to flight. Just like all other vehicles or aircraft.
You can label Prince Harry a hypocrite but so is every other human being who ever lived. Anyone who denies ever being hypocritical is not only hypocritical but an abject liar. It’s not as if Harry has made a living from bashing the oil companies. Apparently it’s also forgotten that he served 10 years in the British Army including work as a helicopter pilot and and served two deployments to Afghanistan.
The electric audi was to drive him there, that was for optics. The gasoline powered range rover was dispatched for the 30 minute drive just to get the gear he requested. The private airplane sat on the tarmac running for that time, whether on auxillary power or not, rather than be put in standby mode, consuming at least 15 gallons of aviation fuel, so he could be comfortable rather than stand on the tarmac waiting. That’s a week’s worth of travel for me. So rather than fly commercial with the plebes and minimize his carbon footprint, he’s pouring on the jetfuel for a flight just for him, and wasting even more due to his forgetfulness.
All of which is fine by all or most of us here, except that he wants a world where WE aren’t allowed to even travel commercial, but HE can do anything he wants and be as wasteful as he likes. His service and past fighting for freedoms is nice, but what he wants now is to strip those freedoms away.

Harry was an Army attack helicopter pilot, William was a Navy S&R helicopter pilot; I have more respect for William than Harry.
Apologies, RAF not Navy, although William did a period of service with the Navy, then after 7 and a half years in the armed forces became an air ambulance pilot.

Harry Windsor served one tour in Afghanistan, supposed to be of 4 months duration but was pulled out after only 2 months. During that 2 month ‘tour’ he was the most protected soldier there, never in any danger and he fired his AH-64 weapons in the general direction of the Taliban exactly once. Frankly Prince Andrew was pretty much the same with his Falklands deployment – an embarassment to his commanders and a joke to his comrades. Do you think Andrew and Harry should get special treatment because they once played at being ‘real’ soldiers? Get a grip.

Montecito Calif is a very expensive area of Santa Barbara Calif which in itself is very expensive. Those that live in the area are generally very wealthy. I knew a number of residents a few years back; in fact one man I knew owned 40 acres in Montecito probably worth an incredible amount by the fact that Calif RE has appreciated incredibly in the last couple of years.
