The Big Green Lie Almost Everyone Claims to Believe

The Big Green Lie Almost Everyone Claims to Believe

Patricia Adams
Lawrence Solomon

Almost every member of Congress, Democrat or Republican, pays homage to the Big Green Lie. So do all the past and remaining Conservative candidates vying to be prime minister of the UK and every candidate currently vying for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada. So does virtually all of the mainstream press. The Big Green Lie—that carbon dioxide is a pollutant—is so pervasive that even those considered skeptics—including right-wing NGOs and pundits—generally adhere to the orthodoxy, differing not in their stated belief that CO2 is a pollutant but only in how calamitous a pollutant it is.

The claim that the “science was settled” on climate change never withstood scrutiny. Scientists around the world signed a series of petitions to dispute that claim. The 2008 Oregon Petition, spearheaded by a former president of the National Academy of Science and championed by Freeman Dyson, Albert Einstein’s successor at Princeton and one of the world’s most preeminent scientists, was signed by more than 31,000 scientists and experts who agreed that “the proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind. … Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.”

What is settled is the abject failure of the three-decade-long attempt by the bureaucracies of the 195 countries of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to convince anyone other than themselves, a credulous media, and a relatively few gullible people that climate change represents an existential threat. Poll after poll over the decades show the public gives climate change short shrift when asked to rank its importance.

What bothers me most about the climate crisis is the opportunity cost, the needless economic pain people endure.

In the USA gasoline prices have skyrocketed, because Brandon’s rabid green administration refuses to allow domestic energy providers to drill for more oil, and refuses to build new pipelines like Keystone.

How many ordinary American families have missed out on visiting the grandparents, because they can’t afford the road trip? How many people will die this winter, because they can’t afford to warm their homes?

Britain, which has embraced this fable more than most, is expected to experience 70% household power bill increases this year, which no end of sight – even though the British people are literally sitting on vast reserves of shale gas, which could cut their energy bills almost overnight.

As for Australia, our nation is a mountain of coal and Uranium, but our government is trying to shut down the the coal and has forbidden the construction of nuclear power plants.

Sooner or later voters will tire of waiting for the promised low cost energy renewables are supposed to deliver, but when they finally awaken, it will still take many years more, to undo the damage this madness has caused.

As a Brit can I just say that UK energy costs have risen a lot more than 70%. Personally mine have doubled and we are being warned to expect large increases in the Autumn. The price cap imposed by the regulator is expected to rise to £3000 pa in October and predicted to rise to £4000pa by spring 2023. Already there is talk of campaigns of dissent.

Your reply doesn’t address the issue. The issue is the cost penalty that unreliable solar and wind cause.

How much unreliable generation needs to be built before, how much gas needs to be left in the ground, and much money in electric boilers and insulation must spent before heating and cooling rates diminish? Will they ever fall back to the levels at which they were when this mess started?

Ask yourself why the costs of periodic electricity has reached into the thousands. Does the term unreliable mean anything to you.

I actually heard an advert on UK radio about getting a heat pump installed today.
First time. Same sort of tone as the smart meter ones.

I also didn’t know until the recent UK “killer heatwave ( all of two days)” that solar panel efficiency drops of above 25C.

Renewables, the gift that keeps giving…..

Reply to  Ray Swadling

The drop is around 0.7%/C. A panel in full sunlight in 30C shade temp will reach 60C on a pitched roof with air gap; hotter if no air gap. So the drop in efficiency from rated temp of 25C is about 25%. Rather than converting 20% of sunlight to electricity they are down to 15%.

The reverse is true as well. A panel cooled by cloud cover will exceed rated output for a few minutes once the cloud passes if the ambient shade temp is less than 25C. My panels have momentarily exceeded nameplate by 10% on cool days when mostly cloudy with clear breaks.

Griff, stop peddling the nonsense that renewables reduce electricity prices. The evidence shows that the more renewable energy a country installs, the higher its electricity price.

Exactly-
Wind and solar are only as renewable as the materials they are made from. We will need way more raw materials in the future to keep up with the fact that they have very short lifespans and are gleaning energy from ridiculously low density sources. That’s why they use more energy than they produce on a lifetime average.

Griff needs to go join a troll farm blogging about Ukraine. They’ll probably pay more than Soros pays free-lancers.

It would take 83 years for an optimally mounted solar panel at 35S latitude to recover the energy that went into its manufacture, transport and installation. That is if it is mounted on a roof. More if it requires a transmission line to get the power from where it is installed to a household. Also more if it needs storage so it can produce an on-demand output.

Griff,
Can you explain why people on 100% renewable energy are paying the same as everyone else?

EON “All our customers’ homes and businesses get 100% renewable electricity, at no extra cost. ”
Shell “All of our electricity comes from 100% renewable sources like wind, solar and biomass”
OVO In October 2020 OVO announced its move to 100% renewable electricity and planting a tree on behalf of every member for every year they’re with us

They all say the same thing, 100% renewable Some say at no extra cost, implyiing it’s more expensive to produce.

Not sure how they manage it as on a breezy and sunny day Gas and nuclear are supplying two thirds of electricity, and Gas 100% of gas.

These three energy suppliers are, of course, lying in their teeth with the express permission of the Legal Profession.
What they ACTUALLY supply is roughly and variable, 85% fossil/nuclear energy (FNE) with say1% Unreliables Such as solar and Wind, with the balance being ‘others’ such as Hydro, Geothermal etc.
The fossil fuel/nuclear element(FNE) comprises bits of paper with insignificant energy content even if you burn them, and these provide a legal interpretation DEEMING the FNE to be “Renewable”. This being the modern equivalent of the ‘Indulgences’ sold by the Catholic Church years ago.

Im not sure of the difference between DEEMING and LYING; but it does indicate that there are dark forces up there amid our so called leaders.

I don’t thing they’re legally lying, if they have produced/purchased enough “carbon” offsets to cover their direct CO2 emissions. Of course the cost associated with the “carbon” offsets just gets passed on to the consumers!

What is actually being supplied depends on your location and the time of day and primarily how windy it is. You can see that at carbonintensity.org.uk at a regional level, and as a country average for a good selection of places around the world at electricitymap.org

It doesn’t add up,

those figures are misleading and do not entirely reflect what happens due to the policy of increasing the use of evs and heat pumps.
Increasing demand means that extra gas generation (U.K.) meets that demand (as nuclear and renewables have given all they can), so these green devices are not as green as they may seem or are made out to be.
This will continue, in my view, as the expansion of the use of these devices will outstrip the expansion of any non CO2 emitting generation actual capacity, especially as nuclear capacity is falling steadily, and there is a limit as to how much renewable generation the grid can absorb. The loss of inertia from the reduction in nuclear generation impacts this somewhat.

Reply to  Iain Reid
August 6, 2022 2:20 am

The misleading element of the figures from National Grid is that they count interconnector supply as zero carbon. That might have been justifiable for IFA1 back when we were importing from France as it was effectively supplied by the massive 5.6GW nuclear complex at Gravelines. However, the BritNed line comes ashore at Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, and the HVDC converter station is right next door to the coal fired MPP3 power station. Unless that is shut it is the source of the power.

The figures do not directly reveal marginal sources of power as demand increases, but you can get an idea by looking at them over time. The value is really in showing that 100% green electricity is usually a complete myth. There are some rare exceptions. For example, until Hinkley B shut down a few days ago it was possible for electricity in the SW to be supplied entirely by nuclear and solar and a tiny bit of wind if the CCGT plant at Indian Queens was not running/needed, with an export surplus to neighbouring regions.

griff,

Unreliables are intermittent providers of electricity and thereby need back up available all the time. This in turn makes that back up intermittent and requires far more capacity to meet any given demand. This back up then becomes more expensive because it cannot rely on running at baseload to recover its costs and then the contracts for gas supply then become more costly to deliver because they too are dependent on when the unreliables fail to deliver.

No matter how many panels and turbines you install you are not going to solve this problem so prices will continue to increase driven by the unreliability of unreliables

Total nonsense! There is zero “payback” on any renewable energy source. Every single one fails to pay back its initial cost, except at vastly increased cost to the consumer. Solar at my latitude produces about 17% of nameplate rating. Wind generators are already being replaced and filling up landfills with blades that can’t be recycled.

UK price caps on domestic energy:

Gas 7p per kWh
Electric 28p per kWh

Even at current gas prices electricity is 4x as expensive.

And in the USA the current gas price is about 1/5 of the UK wholesale – so which “world prices” are you referring to?

The only issue is supply vs demand. Increase supply and the price will fall very quickly.

MarkW

That could only be true if renewables meant a reduction in natural gas consumption.

Unfortunately for you and your fantasies, real world data goes the other way. Renewables mean an increase in fossil fuel demand as well as making the power plants less efficient and more expensive.

Regardless, it was just a year ago that little griffie was telling us that renewables were resulting in coal plants being closed. So which is it little liar in chief, are renewables closing coal plants as you told us last year, or are the causing natural gas plants to be closed, as you are telling us now?

Reply to  griff
August 5, 2022 12:49 pm

They aren’t. There’s a chunk of renewables collecting over £6bn p.a. in subsidies on top of market prices that are boosted by carbon taxes. There’s a smaller chunk that have averaged quite close to market levels in their CFD strike prices, having been above and below in recent months, paying back just a few hundred £m over the past year since prices went haywire. Net result: big subsidies, including an approx £8bn increase in prices due to carbon tax, £2.5bn in extra system balancing costs and perhaps another £4bn in additional network costs.

I gave it a chance, but fortunately the cost benefit was simply not there. I don’t believe in virtue signaling, because my hard earned money means something and it would be irresponsible to do otherwise. That indeed is my virtue sign to all the renewable energy advocates. Inflicting this “religion” upon those least able to afford such increased costs is immoral and a crime against humanity.

The “Oregon Petition”?

“The Petition states:

We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.”

Signing the petition is the right of all sane and practical people.

Eric,
In the Quarterly Essay of April 2021, “Getting to Zero” the former Chief Scientist of Australia Dr. Alan Finkel wrote-
“ A brief digression on Carbon Dioxide: it is not a pollutant.
Calling it a pollutant runs the risk of trivialising the toxic effects of true pollutants. CO2 is not toxic.
It is a product of human metabolism and we exhale it at more than 100 times concentration than is found in the atmosphere.
In the reverse cycle, plants absorb carbon dioxide to use as the food stock for photosynthesis.
Carbon dioxide is a fundamental part of our lifecycle but it also happens to be a greenhouse gas.”
Absolutely correct but Dr.Finkel’s subsequent explanation of GHE is controversial to say the least.
Now Australia has a NPI (National Pollutants Inventory) of 93 elements and compounds styled “non-greenhouse gas pollutants” and CO2,CH4 etc.now styled “greenhouse gas pollutants”.
The latter category has no scientific justification.
It is done to comply with Kyoto and Paris obligations.

Yeah, because we all know there were no floods, fires and storms before the industrial age! That said, any idea why ancient peoples might have named various deities after catastrophic weather phenomena (and attributed them to those and other gods)? Let’s see – we have Zeus, who is associated with storms and lightning; also see Norse god Thor), and Poseidon who is associated with tsunamis, earthquakes and ocean gales, and then there is the god Hurrican (from where we get the word Hurricane) of ancient central America.
If these kinds of floods and storms didn’t exist before humans began burning fossil fuels, then why did so many ancient societies attribute such weather events to various gods?

Stats show that unvaccinated cases have 9x the chance of being hospitalised. We have 90% vaccinated, and still half of hospitalisations are of the 10% unvaccinated.

The increase in deaths is because we kept the infection rates so low before vaccines were available by closing our borders. Basically a function of our geographical isolation which allowed us to keep the virus out.

In my town, for example, we had no infections except in a very few people who caught it elsewhere. Now they’re all getting it, which was an obvious effect of removing travel restrictions.

The covid vaccine does not stop any of the omricon variants. most of the people who have been vaccinated are being infected. My three daughters under workplace mandates were fully vaccinated and afterwards, cought the variant. They did not have to be hospitalized and recovered in a few days. My own doctor told me that vaccination also does not reduce the symptons of the omricon variant if you catch it! Statistics in Australia show that most deaths occur in the 50 to 90 year age group with most deaths in the 80 year old group and rare deaths in lower age groups.

I used to buy into that narrative until I saw the recent study on Israel vs. Palestine. Israel had 4x the rate of full vaccination as Palestine. The two countries have exactly the same Covid death rate per capita .079%.

Case rate is not a useful metric as that is as much a function of the testing rate as it is the actual case rate. The hospitalization rate is not useful because vaccinated people are far more likely to believe that they are protected from a severe case and are therefore much less likely to seek hospitalization. The actual measure of importance is the excess mortality rate, but that’s often hard to find (another failure of our public health officials). Absent excess mortality, the only measure you should look at is the death rate.

I believe that’s using Walensky’s statistical trick, whereby all cases from the very beginning are used to calculate a result.

Using the same methodology, over 90% of Australia’s covid deaths are post vaccine introduction.

Some people are taking the green lies to real extremes.

“Far-left extremists in the Netherlands have threatened to attack farms in the country belonging to “right-wing nationalists”. The threat by far-left extremists in the Netherlands comes as farmers continue to fight EU green agenda measures in their country that could result in the closure of up to 30 per cent of livestock farms, something local government officials have decreed is part and parcel of an “unavoidable transition”.

According to a report by Der Telegraaf, extremists have threatened that they will soon occupy barns of “far-right nationalists” — also known as farmers trying to protect their livelihoods — in the country, and let lose livestock from their pens. “From next week we will occupy livestock farms and free the animals from the mega stables,” the publication reports one online declaration associated with the extremists as saying, who also took time to denounce the farmers themselves.

“They are right-wing nationalists and comparable to Nazis for the animals,” the post said, while urging netizens to join the so-called ‘Animals Defense Force’.”

It’s like those idiots who break into mink farms and set them all free, without realize that every last one of those farm-raised mink will be dead within days as nearby predators gorge themselves on a new food source.

What do they think will happen to those thousands of cattle roaming the Dutch countryside? Most of them will starve, and more than a few will die road accidents that will likely create human casualties as well. The animals would be better off if the greenies just culled them right there on the farm.

Joe Bastardi and various others, including the Farmers Almanac are starting to project that a good part of the US will have a colder and more severe winter than we have seen in some time. Think 2013?

Based on those forecasts and the fact my home is heated with natural gas that is likely to double or triple in price this winter I decided it was time to install a fireplace insert.

My wife loves the ambiance of the open fire but on this one I overruled her.

I have a free source of cured hardwood that will be enough to last us the rest of our lives. All I have to do is cut it, split it, and store it. I have a lean-to off the back of my garage that holds more than 2 full cords. And will actually probably hold three or more when the wood is cut to the maximum 18″ length and split to the size optimum for use in the insert.

So I started shopping for a fireplace insert. Found what I wanted. The wood burning high efficiency noncatalytic unit is advertised to heat 2,000 sq. ft. More than enough for our home. With stainless steel ducting and cap, and an outside air kit, it cost me just under $2,400 new and delivered.

I went to the local fireplace shop to get a ballpark estimate on a similar unit they had including installation price. It was $7,000.

It was all my neighbor, and I could do to get it up over the steps of the deck and in the back door even after taking the firebrick out of it, but it now sits in the living room next to the fireplace awaiting installation.

First step was to call the chimney sweep we have used in the past. I will have him do his thing before I begin installation and since he is certified he can give me tips on the installation.

One thing I was relieved to find was that the slot in the back of my fireplace where ash is dumped will work perfectly for a route to supply the unit with outside air.

I figure that the unit will pay for itself in less than three winters. Thankfully this Hoosier lives in a place where it is highly unlikely the climate wackos can push through any ban on burning.

I wouldn’t assume anything. There are all sorts of pending legislation and wannabe restrictions on particulate emissions i.e. wood burning – which is why the SCOTUS pruneback on EPA’s diktat limits is so important. At least now the rules are more likely to be state-based vs federal.

rah, you under estimate the value of your payback. when interruptions in ng supply occur, the cost to repair water damage and burst frozen pipes just once will give you a net gain.

when people think of rolling black outs or power outages, electricity comes to mind. we must also include ng in the outage mix. i can’t think of a better energy source for heating a home or business than ng. the globalist/leftists know this. those who think ng to their home as 100% reliable are fools.

I guess it is certainly possible that NG supply would be interrupted but a main gas line runs underground on the opposite side of the road that passes in front of my house. The line that supplies my house runs right off it through a pressure stepdown unit. So we shall see.

At my place so far electrical service has been the greater concern since I am near the end of the line for the utility that supplies it and the lines pass through lots of woods before they get to my place. We lose power here about three times a year typically for a duration of 3-5 hours each time.

Several years ago, after an ice storm we lost power for three days. When that happened I spliced into the power line that ran to my furnace and put in a plug and receptacle so I can supply the power to the furnace to run my furnace using my generator. In addition to the furnace the generator is big enough to supply electricity for my refrigerator and a few lights and TV. But my well pump, water heater, and stove are all electric and 220 V and I can’t run them.

The obvious answer is to put in a whole house generator having duel fuel capability with transfer box and run it off NG when available and have an LP tank to run it in case of NG interruption. But that is a bit beyond my budget.

120V gasoline-powered generators work fine for lights, a fridge, or two, and gas or oil fired heating systems. Rather than splicing and un-splicing the heating system, I spent a few bucks on a ‘Manual Generator Transfer Switch’,which piggy backs on to my emergency cut-off switch. I just toggle the switch to ‘generator’ and plug in my extension cord as needed. Saves time and no need to deal with any wiring in the dark.

The garage is detached and has a block foundation with aluminum siding. I have termite spikes in around it and use antguard which keeps the ants away pretty well.

It is one of my projects to replace it eventually with a 2 1/2 car attached garage and convert the old garage to a screened in patio since it is right next to my composite deck that I put in a few years ago.

I cut and stack wood for the following year — in a very dry hot summer climate.
Often the recommendation is for 2 years; 11% moisture.
Get one of these to check: Wood Digital Moisture MeterMine is a Stihl (under $20 when I bought it), but Amazon has dozens.
You may want to have sources of H2O in the house to up the R.H.; but
again, it depends on your climate.
I only have one hardwood, and not much of it. It is a small thorn tree.
One of the thorns pierced the sidewall of a truck tire, requiring replacement.

You talk of opportunity costs and “it will still take many years more, to undo the damage”.

I fear you suffer from a normalcy bias. You badly underestimate the problem. The chilling effect on manufacturing investment when governments embrace Net Zero will be terminal. There will be no undoing it. Once manufacturing leaves it can’t and won’t ever come back. You give up the infrastucture it needs. You lose the skills the workforce needs. You lose the customer base. You lose the supply chains and logistics. You lose it all. Forever.

Factor in the use of the banking and insurance industries being recruited to enforce the policies and the job is done. End of.

My wife has had a tiny taste of what happens when the government burdens the banks with policing its new rules. The banks are not competent to do the job but do it they must. Under the threat of severe penalties the banks err on the side of caution and refuse service. There is no appeal.

I always thought that, when green policies really start to harm people, the population will rise in rebellion. Lately, I have seen more and more green madness without much push back. I was beginning to despair. Then Sri Lanka happened.

Sri Lanka passed green (it’s really a four letter word) laws to force agriculture to go organic practically overnight. Of course agriculture collapsed. You really have to be well educated not to have predicted that. (With enough education you will believe anything, no matter how stupid.) The result is that the Sri Lanka president’s residence was overrun by the people in a manner that makes Jan. 6 look really tame. The president has resigned.

So the government mandating organic farming and banning fertilizer had nothing to do with it?

Do you really believe the rest of the world is as ignorant as you make yourself seem?

Not being able to afford fertilizer? They couldn’t afford not to. The problem was they’d been led to believe they could right the books by foregoing fertilizer; led to believe this by people who had no experience in the matter and no understanding. It’s like saving money in running a motel by not cleaning rooms…

Sigh … I weep for our dear griff. I cling to the belief that he’s not really that ignorant and stupid, just ideologically possessed. I suppose it could be all three though. Something like that.

Any successful business person will immediately see why griff is not even wrong. I suggest he start a business. It would lead to less bloviation and more in-touch-with-reality comments.

Griff has demonstrated the ability to cut and paste from things he reads and almost understands. However, he hasn’t demonstrated the ability to defend his claims by participating in an exchange. Indeed, he acts as though there is no need to defend his claims. Therefore, I’ll have to go with the hypothesis that he is “ignorant and stupid.”

My Chinese relatives will not be seen within a mile of the Falun Gong. Whether or not the Epoch Times is the propaganda arm of the Falun Gong, they still treat it like cholera. You could say that’s because China is a totalitarian society with no concept of free speech.

On the other hand, I fear and loathe the woke social justice warriors who surround me. That’s why I post anonymously. America, and Canada even worse, do have a free speech problem.

So too Victoria Australia and the United Kingdom …..Recently a British Army veteran was arrested by some horrible police in a part of England troubled by unsolved violent crimes , for re-posting a satirical meme featuring four Pride flags arranged to look like a Hakenkreutz swastika . Retired police officer Harry Miller [ who once took the College of Policing to court after he received a lecture by some dumb copper who took a ” ladybrains” course and had never heard of George Orwell ] was arrested for defending him …The man who originated the meme – actor Laurence Fox – was present to film the disgraceful incident yet was not arrested .All the veteran did was re-post the offending meme ..So one was left with the impression the cowardly Woke inquisitor police turned up intent on making an example of a veteran whom they suspected the general public may not sympathize with or generate as much outrage as the arrest of a famous actor .. The United Kingdom is also fast becoming a totalitarian society with no concept of free speech

For every winner there is a loser. Follow the money. The Green New Deal is creating energy shortages driving windfall profits at the expense of taxpayes and ratepayers.

The exact opposite of what was advertised. Why? Because no one stopped to ask where the additional energy needed to build the green economy was going to come from.

Instead of oil and gas to run the old economy we must now run the old economy while building an untried green economy. At least double the cost.

Opportunity costs galore, yes. Foregone wealth too, but also ruining current wealth. But much of it accommodating the usual sausage-making and log rolling in D.C. In order to get the stupidly misnamed Inflation Reduction Act passed the Dems agreed to allow Manchin the Mountain Valley Pipeline to be finished, and Sinema to service her big donors. Well, if the MVP can be finished then why not Keystone? You see, there is no consistency or reasoning here. Nothing but posing fakers, lies, and save-the-appearances twisted logic.

Last century there were many examples of people being far more comfortable with murdering hundreds of millions, and oppressing billions, rather than admit failure of their ideas. So, what exactly will put an end to this current madness, or more precisely the current half dozen or so manias currently in progress?

You do write a load of cock Griff – what drives it?

Perhaps you must have been looking at a different British Geological Survey website – there may well be two of them.

Here’s a quote from the one I looked at ….

“Andrews (2013) estimated a total gas-in-place estimate for the Bowland Shale Formation and Hodder Mudstone Formation between 822 and 2281 trillion cubic feet (tcf). As a comparison, the total gas consumption in 2018 in the UK was 2.98 tcf. Since then, other estimates have suggested the total gas-in-place volume could be considerably less (around 140 tcf; Whitelaw et al., 2019). ”

Or maybe you might consider ….

Hard coal
The UK has identified hard coal resources of 3 910 million tonnes, although total resources could be as large as 187 billion tonnes. There are 33 million tonnes of economically recoverable reserves available at operational and permitted mines, plus a further 344 million tonnes at mines in planning. There are also about 1 000 million tonnes of lignite resources, mainly in Northern Ireland, although no lignite is mined. This significant coal resource base is, however, rendered largely irrelevant by policies designed to drive coal out of the energy mix and a hostile planning environment for surface mines.”

You might want to just stick “syngas” into your favourite search engine and spend a moment or two reviewing the figures there as well.

Centrica is intrinsically biased. They are trying to divest the gas supply side of their business and heavily buy more renewables – they were also one of the first to set up a heat pump installation section. They have been firmly against fracking and dor more unreliables – not an honest broker.

This is one of the biggest problems. Many skeptics accept the false premise that increasing CO2 produces some warming via 3.7 W/m2 of downwelling IR.

Doesn’t happen. There is no 1 C of warming from 2X CO2. The reason is a lack of understanding of immediate negative feedbacks from the boundary layer. And, without this initial warming, there are no positive feedbacks.

The increase in downwelling IR from doubling CO2 is either immediately countered due to thermal equilibrium processes or results in increased evaporation. No surface warming occurs

He has no intention of engaging in debate or even reading the endless rebuttals to his comments. His role is to flood the site with comments contradicting real science. It may be better to ignore Griff and let the unsupported posts he/she/it places be the equivalent of talking to an empty room.

The problem with trolls like Griff – is legitimate posters feel it necessary to respond … and like this post it turns into a Griff Post not a WUWT post. I highlighted the times Griff was mentioned in this post and it is too many to count … so Griff wins What’s Up with That becomes Griff Too Many to Count. So in that sense Griff won !!!! I have experimented with different quires for example:“how many rich AGW activists actually live in completely off grid houses and have a truly “sustainable” life style. What often comes up is a bunch of AGM propaganda ie the settled science, CO2 , forcing , etc etc before you actually get down the list and then maybe if your lucky that is , actually get a responsive answer to the specific question. Oh the answer to that question above is None.

Like “observa” below, I copy and paste the last sentence in the article. It will be sooner rather than later!! And it should not take a very long time to undo the damage from the madness:

It’s the Economy, Stupid”. I am an optimist – and I have great faith in our democratic, electoral system. The up-coming mid-term elections in the United States will be the game changer. “Secular perversity thus uncritically assumes that, if indeed there exists some ‘flaw” or ‘fault’ operating to prevent the fulfillment of human potential, the place to look for such a fault was in ‘nature’ when, in point of fact, the fault is not in ‘nature’, but in the construction placed upon it by the human mind. To make this assumption is to suppose that man begins, so to speak, where nature leaves off; that the human task is to perfect the imperfection of nature’s handiwork. In other words, it is idolatry in its most subtle and seductive manifestation, the worship of man by himself.”
