A second Australian household have been rushed to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning after attempting to warm their house with a charcoal burner – laying bare the reality of the country’s ongoing energy crisis.
Emergency services attended a home in Adelaide‘s Bedford Park on Friday morning after four people woke up feeling faint and suffering from nosebleeds.
They had been attempting to warm their home overnight using a cooker. All four showed signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Two women aged 28, a 24-year-old man and 31-year-old man were taken to Flinders Medical Centre just after 1:30am.
South Australia Police confirmed to Daily Mail Australia they are currently in non life-threatening conditions.
It comes after a family of six from Sydney’s west were also hospitalised this week after using a burner to warm their granny flat.
…
President Obama explaining how renewables would cause electricity prices to “skyrocket”.
Thankfully in these cases the families survived. The next group of desperate people might not be so lucky
It is easy to disrespect the people who did this, marvel at their stupidity, but we don’t know what it was like in those houses and apartments. Desperate people do desperate things.
I blame the politicians for this level of desperation, in which people risk their lives for a little warmth. This problem is completely fixable, all politicians have to do is ditch their green policies and liberate the energy market to find the cheapest solution.
Green advocate politicians must know their renewable energy drive has consequences, but they continue anyway. They just don’t care.
One of the scenes in “Dr.Zhivago” was Zhivago ripping up a wooden fence for the wood stove in what used to be his house.
Probably had a chimney or holes in the roof.
Probably a lot more drafty than modern construction.
Also, the ink was still liquid when the temperature was supposed to be -15C.
But, if you enjoyed the movie, then read the book. It is even better.
Australia has an annual intake of refugees for resettlement sent via the UN HCR and is third per capita in the world behind the United States and Canada.
Coming to many cities in Europe this winter.
The dead people are a feature of greentardery, not a glitch.
“Energy Impoverished Aussies Risking Carbon Monoxide Poisoning to Stay Warm”…. by burning fossil fuels.
Or how about:
“Content Impoverished Worrel Desperately Jumps Shark”
Basically, more people dying from cold Loydo
If you were smarter you would see that
Are you that small minded? Why the ad hominem instead of putting up an argument on the subject matter.
You must be new here. Otherwise, you would know that, yes, Loydo is that small-minded. In both senses, petty and stupid.
In addition, Loydo never argues on the subject matter.
You have become Griff
Why am I not surprised to find out Loydo is unconcerned about how the policies that he supports are killing people?
Why am I also not surprised to find that Loydo can’t be bothered with arguing facts but goes straight to content impoverished insults?
How about: Loydo hates poor people so much that he dismissed article about people so poor that they cannot afford the “energy” bills due to spending of redundant but unreliable wind and solar.so must burn charcoal in their homes to keep from freezing to death, thus almost killing themselves from CO poisoning as jumping the shark!
Loydo, why do you hate poor people soooo much that you want them to freeze, or otherwise die for your green cause??
Some people here in Australia don’t know that it is mandated that if you have fossil fuel heaters it either has to be flued or have high and low vents.
Some people won’t be able to afford installation of such luxuries – esp now that inflation is roaring harder than their fires!
assuming your council will even allow combustion heaters, many now will not..the cost of a new heater is 2k or so then installing it dep on state you cant DIY but have to pay insane fees for a lic plumber/gasfitter roofer to place the flue to satisfy insurance. if youre lucky you may have an old fireplace you can install a cheaper secondhand slow combo into and just flue up the chimney to 6 to 10 ft and block the back to stop heat loss up chimney, if youre a renter then thats not likely to be viable either.
When I was a 1950s kid we got warm by sitting around a kerosene heater at night, indoors with no doors or windows open.
I learned to love the smell of kerosene in the morning.
You probably lived in the same kind of draughty house I did with enough air getting in from outside to keep you alive.
Yes, and that was ONE of the reasons it was so cold, too!
Yes and the 1950/60s was the first Windrush wave. And coming from the Caribbean the people found it very hard to live in the draughty, poorly insulated and only one room heated British houses. So many of them bought these cheap paraffin heater to try and get warm (remember the scare in those times was Global Cooling). Unfortunately a good number of times these ungainly heaters would get knocked over with tragic results
As a boy, we also used either kerosene or nat. gas heaters, too, but the houses in those days had no insulation and the walls were very porous, so there was plenty of ‘ventilation’. Some how or other, we all survived.
That is feature, not a bug of the push for net zero. Fewer humans to ruin the supposed purity of mother nature.
AND killing the poorest first.
But don’t worry, the rich and powerful are making sure that they are importing enough cheap labor through illegal immigration to sustain their lofty standard of living.
Many houses in the UK have chimneys and fireplaces that haven’t been used for decades. Simply blocked with a sheet of hardboard.
I can see many being ooened this winter and being used to burn whatever is available for a bit of heat.
The chimney will not have been swept for decades either and may well be blocked or partially blocked, increasing the UK’s excess winter deaths
Getting the chimney swept is a good idea…
Agreed. Our back room chimney stack was completely blocked by a grey squirrel’s drey.
So while your at it, add a chimney pot cowl to keep them out.
P.S. According to our chimney sweep the damage to a room’s decoration by a panicking squirrel running horizontally around the walls has to be seen to be believed.
in Aus a possum will do the same damage
In the US it is opossum.
Two issues with that.
Find a chimney sweep, or even someone with brushes.
Anyone under 50 won’t remember chimney fires, or birds nests, and debris blocking chimneys
Forgot that as we’re talking about mainly low income households can they afford a chimney sweep
Ben,
You seem to have a “You can’t do that because” attitude to life.
If such, then I contend you are part of the problem.
In the 1950s my dad swept our chimneys himself. He had my oldest brother stand outside our Liverpool home to watch for the brush coming up out of the pot. Can do works.
No not at all, I grew up with electricity, mains water, mains gas and with a sceptic tank. In the winter of 62-63 my brother and I spent every day sawing old fence stobs to burn the same day. We had to unfreeze water pipes every day and break ice on the surface of water in the WC system. When a frozen pipe split I repaired it with fibre glass mat and resin the only thing available. Most winters we had frozen pipe and snow problems.
Sweeping chimneys just another job. As was dealing with birds up to owl size that fell down them.
It’s not about me and my attitude to life.
It’s people who have only lived in a city where gas and electricity are on tap 24/7. That hey have no experience or knowledge of how these 50 year old systems work. They are short on financial resources. Therefore they will have to use the lowest cost options. This means whatever combustible material they can get their hands on including green wood. Can’t afford to buy chimney brushes why would you own something you haven’t needed ever in your life? Can’t/won’t afford a professional sweep. Chimney fires and Carbon Monoxide are a very real risk.
The difference between you and I is you think that people should know thing that are second nature to you and should be capable of anticipating potential danger. I think that people who’ve never experienced this situation are likely to make a potentially fatal mistake. Even with a huge publicity campaign those mistakes will be made.
An embarrassing story. In my teens, the first time I used an electric kettle I didn’t fill it with water. I was used to a light kettle we used on a Calor two ring gas cooker. I could tell if there was water in it by the weight. The electric kettle was heavy gauge with a heating element so it appeared half full. Fortunately it had a thermal cut out which saved the day when it triggered with a bang.
You can only can do if you know what it is you have to do.
Re the kettle similar thing happened to me.
My former next door neighbour did that an ended up having to redecorate the room that he had just finished redecorating!
no they cant
To get our chimney swept here in NE Wales the cost is from £70.
ladder on the roof is banned for homeowners in Victoria aus.
I do it regardless;-) a roll of chickenwire all crumpled to fit the flue and a long rope I get a mate to grab the rope and drag the wire mesh down i drag it up repeat and all done
IF you can find a sweep its 140+ and months wait for the same result
Who said we used a ladder? 😉
Too right. A mate only sets you back a carton of stubbies.
Wait, wait, wait. Ladders to roofs are banned in your area? What? Is this nanny state legislation?
In London you can find one, but in the sticks it could be a problem
What’s next? Animal dung?
Green policies are institutionalised murder.
The Gaia religion in Australia is increasing the disturbance in the force using the boiling frog method.
Charcoal is not a fossil fuel.
Thank you Phil, that was my reading also = especially that charcoal is not COALS as the headline screeches
In the good old days of draughty houses with fireplaces & chimneys, this would not have happened. But chimneys are now deemed unnecessary and the draughts all sealed up – in order to Save Energy, Reduce Emissions and Save The World .
While the resultant poor air-quality inside such homes, even before charcoal burners are brought in, sets off Asthma in the kids and all sorts of (respiratory, sinus, autoimmune) disorders in the adults.
Everything is now wrong – as it has to be in order to prop up and maintain the Total Wrong that is = Climate Science.
All anyone/everyone needs to do is 3 things:
Is that really too much for anyone to get their heads around?
id suggest it was the hotrocks that give off foul fumes rather then honest charcoal
if youre on newstart(dole) or low paid 20 or so hrs casual and paying 300+ or more a week rent then you have little to no money for power/gas petrol or anything else like food. I noticed black mould around the bedroom window frame from condensation, so i ran an oil column heater just at night from 1am or so at bed book sleeptimes till around 7am to try and dry the air inside to stop it happening.
recent electric bill soared by 45$ over the norm for that brief useage, maybe 10 days or so while it was 2 /3 /4c etc outside, luckily i can cover that without starving or being unable to pay mortgage. that said I havent been out anywhere bought a meal or coffee while out had a paid haircut or done anything most people consider “normal” for well over 20 years. never new clothes or shoes etc , do my own services on car and even thats not more than 1x a yr, fuel was 30 to 40$ a fortnight to go down the street to shop see friends etc now the same useage is 60 or more and I am limiting those trips too.
i consider Im managing pretty well but I also have a disability pension which compared to newstart is luxury and still far below the poverty levels.
I grew up poor and had a depression era mother so i can cook and repair and recycle far beyond the skillsets the younger gen have to enable getting by
I wonder if using the real data of World temperatures, & the same GIGO computers that the Greens so called scientists use, could we produce data that shows that the World is actually cooling.
Then we could say that if CO2 creates warmth, that we need to produce more of it.
And if it were possible to “Punish” the likes of both India & China economically re. their CO2 emissions, they would no doubt find such evidence for a cooling Worl

What is a “charcoal burner”? Do they mean they brought the barbie inside ??
I’m rather surprised that such a slow burning fire, whick glows rather than burns ( unless you chuck petrol of fuel oil on it as well ) would produce carbon MONOxide. That implies lack of oxygen.
I expect the usual crap reporting that today’s media is capable of is not getting the facts right here.
It does sound like CO poisoning but “charcoal” I doubt it.
Ah, this is getting to be a game of chinese whispers, as each outlet selectively quotes its sources.
It seems some of them were burning “coals” ie domestic coal in a charcoal burners aka a barbie.
Coal burners have a chimney or a flue to evacuate toxic combustion products. Barbies are for burning charcoal.
Charcoal has nothing to do with coal. This is like the guy drinking fish tank clearer because he saw “chloro” somewhere on the label and equated that to hydroxychloroquine.
The name Darwin springs to mind.
Smoldering fires are the ones that produce the most carbon monoxide.
Due, primarily, to the incomplete combustion.
You are mistaken, charcoal is notoriously common as a source of incomplete combustion and CO poisoning. As a physician I have seen this many times in my career. Slow grumbling combustion is a very high source of CO. High energetic combustion tends to draw air in rapidly increasing oxygen delivery and thereby increasing complete combustion.
Having had wife almost die of CO poisoning I can vouch for the tragic events badly ventilated or badly functioning gas, coal or wood, charcoal burners can make.

The stupid A-holes at the ambulance made it many times worse by using a finger probe to detect blood oxygen levels….which of course is the dumbest thing you can do,
(because CO rich blood looks just like proper good oxygen level blood.)
..b..strds nearly killed her, by refusing to give her oxygen saying she didn’t need it!!
I nearly ended up bringing up 3 children on my own.
It took months to get over the brain damage someone suffered from acute hypoxia….inc disturbed hormone balance, water body balance and inner ear balance from the damage.
To me it was literally unbelievable how this silent killer could cause so much crap, by being exposed constantly to such a situation for weeks on end.
If greenies want to kill people by their policies, I would be first out on the street with an AK47!
When I was stationed in Japan, back in the late 50’s, charcoal was very popular, used in their hibachis, much like a barbie. They were a large earthenware bowl, without a lid. Often used INDOORS, too, to cook their version of BBQ. Sadly, there were many people who died from their usage. It was always carbon monoxide poisoning. So, yes, they do draw oxygen from the air. Very dangerous.
FFS, when the smoke stings your eyes and makes you cough , there’s a clue it may not be good for you.
If we are to reduce the planetary population to 500,000 to be “in equilibrium with nature”, I guess Darwinian selection is a good place to start.
Sadly, I suspect that is the goal of the “green” movement. It has NEVER been about saving the planet (for whom?). It’s always been about control of the populace. Independence is abhorrent to their cause.
When their false claims become obvious, they simply concoct new ones.
I think greens are just sad people who are looking for some meaning to their lives.
So they join in something, anything, just to “belong”.
Most environmentalists believe that the planet is over crowded and that the first step in any “recovery” plan includes a massive culling of human populations.
Always starting with NOT THEMSELVES.
Hence the huge push for Planned Parenthood, and all the abortions they now claim are constitutional ‘rights’ here in the USA!
The last sentence in the article sez it all, the spot on truth.

I have never seen charcoal referred to as “coals”, nor, for that matter would coal be referred to as “coals”. Charcoal briquettes are also very. expensive Now, it’s possible that a wood fire was begun outside, and the resulting coals were brought in and put in the barbie. But how would anyone know they had done that, unless they told them? Hmmm….
Basically rabble… this talking won’t do anything to move the needle or convince others based on hving or lack of the science. Delete.
