British Eco-Terrorist Group Attacks SUVs in New York

Essay by Eric Worrall

h/t Dr. Willie Soon; Tyre Extinguishers deflate SUV tyres, in the hope their nuisance actions will coerce owners to switch to eco-friendly vehicles. Sooner or later their actions will kill someone.

British climate activists deflate more than 40 tires on SUVs in NYC’s Upper East Side and leave leaflets saying ‘your gas guzzler kills’: Group warns more cities will be struck in the coming weeks

  • Tyre Extinguishers originated in the UK, and say their mission is ‘to make it impossible to own a huge polluting 4×4 in the world’s urban areas’
  • The group deflate the tires of SUVs, in a bid to make owning one so inconvenient that drivers will switch to other, more environmentally-friendly, vehicles
  • They have targeted vehicles in the U.K., Austria, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Sweden and New Zealand
  • This week they carried their first ‘action’ in New York City, deflating the tires of multiple vehicles on Manhattan’s Upper East Side
  • The group left leaflets on the SUVs they hit, saying: ‘Attention: Your gas guzzler kills’, and are vowing to act in other cities

Climate change activists with a group calling itself Tyre Extinguishers are celebrating their first ‘action’ in New York City – deflating the tires of 40 SUVs on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The movement, which originated in the United Kingdom, seeks to dissuade people from owning SUVs in urban areas, and switch instead to more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

The SUVs they vandalized had leaflets let on the windshield, which stated: ‘Attention: Your gas guzzler kills’.

Read more: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10971889/British-climate-activists-slash-tires-40-SUVs-NYC-leave-leaflet-gas-guzzler-kills.html

Last time WUWT covered these losers, we discovered their favourite covert deflation trick is leaving a hard lentil under the valve cap, to slowly deflate the tire by pressing gently on the valve. This potentially creates a window of time during which the SUV owner might not notice their vehicle has been sabotaged, which could in turn lead to a serious or fatal road accident, if the tire deflates suddenly while travelling on a motorway or busy road.

They say they always leave a note – but who reads all the junk fliers which get stuck to wind shields in a big city?

In my opinion these people are terrorists, and deserve to be treated as such. They are happy to put the lives of other people at risk to make a political point.

Best defence would be to buy a GAC Trumpchi GS8 .

Chinese made, and therefore exempt / protected from any climate activism targeting, you could park it in any inner-city street, sure in the knowledge that it will be treated reverentially.

That act in Florida is a crime under FL Statutes 860.17, vehicle tampering. First tyre is a second degree misdemeanor with 60 days in prison. Every tyre thereafter is a first degree misdemeanor, each tyre good for a year in prison.

Hope they come and get caught. We have lots of convenient direct flights from UK to Orlando and Miami, both of which have lots of SUVs. And I am sure they will enjoy their stay in our Florida weather, especially summer—almost none of Florida’s prisons have any air conditioning.

The article said 40 SUVs, Rud. 40 x 4 tires is about 160 years in the pokey.

Ah, but… if they only messed with one tire per SUV, then it would be a nice 40-year vacation in Florida. And Florida has no State income tax. How lucky could they get? 😉

Yes, in a Florida prison compared to an unheated apartment in London with no food in the fridge, this may become a winter vacation plan, all for the price of deflating a tire.

Given the demand that all visitors to US (unless returning US citizens ) must be vaccinated the perpetrators, if British as stated above, must surely be identifiable via immigration records and Homeland Security files- the vaccination evidence demanded at port of entry will be based on UK NHS records.

In actual fact they do appear to be American – the leaflets left were written with American English, the group calls itself Tire (not tyre, UK spelling) Extinguishers NYC and say that they were inspired by the UK group, not part of it.

That may be the smoking gun, and if so, journalism is truly dead if we have to work so hard to figure out that the Daily Mail didn’t mean what they wrote, but something else en’tire’ly.

Tyre extinguishers were the first UK group but there are now at least 4 operating here (including Deflators and Tyred of SUV’s) and they claim to now be a global organisation covering USA, France, Germany, Spain and Austria (possibly other countries). As to journalistic mistakes – haven’t we learned that lesson by now; to not trust anything we see in the media at face value but to read other articles, other reports – the actual original sources if possible? The information I got was from local (New York) media and blogs covering the same incident, as well as the Tyre Extinguishers website. Other sources are available!

OK, they are targeting SUVs. I just bought a used (2020) Ford Explorer PIU (Police Interceptor Utility). AWD, Yuuggge brakes, and it’s REALLY FAST!

The thing is, I paid extra for this beauty- it is also a HYBRID.

The first tank of gas (sorry, all my Brit friends, that would be “petrol” to you!) I got 24MPG for a 4600# vehicle. Subsequently, I have been playing “Mr. Mileage” and my most recent tank I am getting THIRTY PLUS MPG!

This was a replacement for my 2003 CVPI (Crown Victoria Police Interceptor) that got 18MPG, city or highway.

Am I “environmentally conscious” or not? (Actually, at $6 a gallon, IDGAS (an acronym that ends with a profanity!)

Where would these “eco-warriors” place my vehicle?

And also sorry to my “metric friends”, I do not have the time to convert to Litres per Kilometer…

Anyone who thinks it appropriate to deliberately endanger the lives of others to push their views down others throats by force needs some serious re-education.

Richard, I was going by the headline in the article which clearly states it was British activists.

In all fairness to you, I clicked on the linked Daily Mail article. It was marginally helpful.

The headline there was exactly as posted here on WUWT. So, I would conclude that the Daily Mail must have known that it was British activists.

But were they?

The tweet from Tyre Extinguishers shed some light on the topic.

Quoting, it said:
————-
[all caps] “Big News: Tyre Extinguishers strike for the first time in New York city.

40 SUVs disarmed in the Upper East Side. The first of many.

We have an American English leaflet (‘tire’ rather than ‘tyre’) on our website so USA folks, you can join in!
tyreextinguishers.com

[image of American English version of the leaflet]
——————-

As I read the tweet, it reports the New York action, and then invites US activists to join in after the the action had taken place.

Well that’s marginally helpful. No mention that fellow US activists deflated the tires, and it could be construed that the Brit contingent led by example and were now encouraging people in the US to join in after this incident.

Given the Daily Mail article and the tweet from Tyre Extinguishers, I see no evidence that US activists were involved. And after all, it would only take a couple of the Brits to fly over and do in 40 ‘tyres’ (what, 2 -3 hours at most?) to get the ball rolling in the US.

That said, you’ve won me over to at least be a little sceptical that it was British activists.

It’s not so much anything in the article or anything put out by Tyre Extinguishers that has me now somewhat sceptical.

From my reading of the T.E material, they have the collective mind of the Borg and flattening a tyre in London is the same as flattening a tire in Atlanta.

Then there is the sloppy reporting by the Daily Mail. They could have easily cleared up the point; a jaunt to the US to kick things off or a first action by US members. But noooo. It favors Brits doing the deed but leaves room for US activists and is never clear on the point.

I appreciate your followup comment, Richard. It made me dig far enough to be a bit sceptical of that headline, but I can’t reject it out of hand.

I would sincerely appreciate it if you could steer me to some part of the article that would conclusively nail down the nationality of the activists, UK or US.

Meanwhile, I can’t fault anyone who took the article at face value and concluded that it’s the Brits wot dunnit. But I have found no support either for your position that it was US activists.

I blame the Daily Mail.

It says twice that the movement ‘originated’ in Britain. The idea that these nutcases would spend a chunk of cash to fly to USA, leaving a trail of identification, to let a few tyres down when they could have done the same in any city in the UK is far fetched, to say the least.

H.R.
Reply to  DaveS

Dave S: It says twice that the movement ‘originated’ in Britain”

That’s not remotely in question. The movement originated in Britain. That does not identify who let the air out of the tires in the Upper East Side.

But why did the Daily Mail use that particular headline and why was the tweet worded only mentioning that an American English version of their flyer was available so Americans can join in?

Is it all just sloppy writing? It could be.

As I replied to Richard, I am now somewhat sceptical that it was Brits, but the headline says it was and the article did not definitively point to either Brits or Americans. I would think that the tweet might have made mention that the American version had been used by Americans but the way it is worded, it does not indicate that it has yet been used by Americans.

As for one or two Brits flying to the US, have you not yet learned to never ever underestimate the crazy in “True Believers?” There is a lot of money behind the crazy, too.

We have videos of people being shot or stabbed in New York and the police do nothing. Where is the risk in anyone letting out some air from tires?

It would not surprise me at all that the NYPD would just say, “Well, be on your way, then” if whoever sabotaged the tires marched into a precinct station and announced they did it.

I believe that there is no one in NYC wasting a moment of time looking for the people who did this, but that is speculation on my part.

In the article, there is no evidence presented to counter the headline that Brits did the deed. There is reason to suspect it was Americans, but how can you fault someone reading the article to conclude it was Brits?

One can speculate it was Americans, but where is the evidence? It’s also fair to conclude that there is nothing to prevent Brits from getting on a plane to America.

There is no evidence that they did or did not fly over, just as no evidence was presented that Americans conducted the T.E. action.

If you want to speculate about a dodgy article and tweet, feel free. If you have something more definitive than “The movement originated in Britain” as to the nationality of the perps, please share. I’d be interested.

But I don’t see enough information that’s conclusive in either of those to counter the headline either way.

I don’t fault anyone for being sceptical that it was Brits, nor can I find fault with anyone who accepts the headline at face value.

I also blame the Daily Fail (as it’s known in the UK) for not doing their homework and referring to the group as ‘Tire Extinguishers’ (their name) or referring to the information that they put out which was picked up by New York City blogs and media. They claim to be an American activist group, affiliated to the global (!) Tyre Extinguishers group and also claim to have other groups in Arizona and Colorado (I believe). Aside from the Daily Fail, most media seem to attribute this to an American offshoot of the original British group, not Brits themselves.

Do these terrorrists have a website? Does anyone own up to being a leader? Go after them in a similar fashion.

Hopefully they will decide it is important to start slashing the tyres of the planes that are used by folks like Al Gore that have a huge Carbon Footprint as long as they put warnings on the plane and on the Internet to check their tyres.
They will have many more targets that have similar Carbon Footprints to use their stupid metric!

I recall some EU decision is pending that owners of private jets are exempt from carbon taxes or shaming because they are “important” people, not unwashed plebs. Just in case you had any doubts about the “don’t do what I do, do as I say” mentally of the eco-fascists ( oh, sorry, tireless warriors for the planet/ sarc).

They do have a website I’ve just noticed – from there; “We have no leader – anyone can take part, wherever you are, by using the simple instructions on this website.”
What are the penalties for radicalisation, or for providing a user manual for potential terrorists?

As vehicle tires are Federally Mandated safety devices, like smoke detectors on aircraft… extradition is possible.

Extradition is probably possible, Prjindigo.

Try getting the defunded NYPD to go after anyone for anything short of murder, and do note that there are videos of recent murders that were circulating on the net and the NYPD did nothing.

The prosecutors and judges have just been letting everyone go. Why would any New York cop concern themselves with this incident?

Just about any Blue city in America is safe as can be for Tyre (or Tire) Extinguishers to act. It’s not like it’s a “mostly peaceful” demonstration involving rioting, burning, and looting… which is OK, BTW.

Arrest for this in NYC is laughable, and the thought of extradition is somewhere out there in a galaxy far, far away.

That said, commenters have mentioned a lot of places in America where it would be beyond damn foolish for Tyre Extinguishers to attempt to deflate tires. T.E. would demand extradition in those locales.

Well, if they really are British activists (and I am highly sceptical, believe me) then they would be sh!t out of luck – there is no extradition from the USA. The extradition treaty signed between USA and UK only covers extradidition TO the USA, there is no reciprocal arrangement – if a UK citizen commits a crime in the USA, they stay there. Yay you get to keep our retards and loonies!

Richard, sorry to be late getting back to you. There was a gazebo I just finished building yesterday, a deck I am rebuilding with composite decking, and a July 4th holiday… and I am the cook. I’m about a dozen articles behind here.

Anyhow, the last place I thought we could find definitive proof was in that leaflet on the windshield. No luck there. It was no doubt printed in the USA for placing on the damaged autos in the USA. It was the ‘Tire’ version, but the website was tyreextinguishers.com.

No hat tip to Americans joining in the movement in the interviews. Just a reference that there will be Americans joining in across the US.

It bothers me that the news reports and the interviews focused on the Brits and there was never a mention of ‘our American members’ joining in.

What I think is that these are delusionary revolutionaries trying to make their group seem much larger than it is and having strong, widespread, popular support. “We are everywhere, and many, many people are coming on board every day.”

For all I know, Tyre Extinguishers may just be griff and his 2 pals working out of his mum’s basement. I never underestimate the crazy and the funding of the True Believers.

I think that these are pathetic losers choosing something destructive to give some sliver of meaning to their lives. They have fantasies of being the masterminds of a worldwide organization. “Hail Hydra! Tyre Extinguishers! We are everywhere!”

From the news reports, which said it was the Brits, and the interviews which did not give any credit to Americans, I just don’t know.

What would be very interesting to see would be a Tyre Extinguishers action in 50 or 70 different cities around the world on the same day. I don’t think that has even happened in just two cities on the same day in the UK.

This has been an interesting dive down into the rabbit hole and you have been very engaging in the discussion. Thanks, and Salute!

Now, I’ve got some catching up to do on WUWT while I have a break in projects. Next up is replacing the baseboard in the mother-in-law’s house

I drive a 40 year old landcruiser. I wonder how much CO2 it would have cost to scrap it after 10 years and produce a new one. I doubt that it’s possible to drive so many miles in 10 years to match that. Even in 15 years it would be difficult, if not impossible.

Exactly. Tire Extinguishers in America, Tyre Extinguishers in UK. Different but similar.

They are so stupid they don’t grasp the fact that a service vehicle most likely will have to come to repair or replace the tires, then a new tire will need to be produced for the replacement, then the damaged tire has to be disposed of, yep, the word stupid does apply.

Now that the US Supreme Court has voided NY’s restrictive concealed carry permit law there will be a lot more New Yorker who can protect their property and lives by exercising their constitutional rights.

Well I guess our Subaru Crosstrek, which barely qualifies as an SUV due to its somewhat raised clearance, but is not a 4×4 since it has AWD is safe from these hoodlums. Same for our truck, which has 4WD, but being a truck isn’t an SUV. Woo-hoo! Plus we don’t live anywhere near NYC, or indeed any city.
