Elevator speech (approx 30-60 secs)
And
Wait in line for coffee speech (3-5 minutes)

I have learnt so much from WUWT and read a lot of sceptic to sceptic conversations. But I am interested in up to date ways for short sharp sceptic to public conversations. As a sceptic( well really a denier) of CAGW I am always looking for better ways to convince fence sitting work colleagues.
Any thoughts of the most important topics for quick climate change discussions/speeches.
(I note Rud has started pushing the Failed predictions )
Thanks in advance.

I believe Alex Epstein is doing incredible work in the area of persuasion. Although he is not as skeptical of the “science” as I am, his work on the benefits of fossil fuels is incredible. He believes that human flourishing is done via fossil fuels.

We expect a high correlation between A and B

  • A = being a French citizen
  • A = being a teacher
  • A = being a non scientist
  • A = having studied humanities

and B = being aligned with the warmist mantra

Yet I once talked to a French philosophy teacher, and while not saying it exactly, he ostensibly implied that he did not follow indirect, model based “evidence” and was not in the common crowd.

  1. why start temperature work in 1850? End of little ice age. Do you want to go back to that time with low CO2, people starving, people freezing?
  2. there has always been climate change. Last ice age NYC was under a mile of ice. Want to go back to that?
  3. if research showed that climate change was wonderful and helpful to humanity would the scientists get more funding?
  4. it only takes on skeptic to change science. World was flat till it wasn’t. Einstein changed much of science forever. Or at least till someone proves him wrong. That’s what science is.

One of the many traits that made Einstein a once-in-a-generation genius was that he fully expected to be proven wrong in the future. It didn’t bother him. He welcomed the challenge. I wonder how he’d answer today’s “scientists” and their religious fervor in their declarations of doom?

As well as short, sharp discussion points, I reckon we also need the “overwhelming volume of facts” paper.

To wit – next month is the 50th anniversary of the start of UNEP (United Nations Environmental Prrogramme), which began issuing the doom and gloom predictions.
So we’ve now had 50 years of ever-increasing doom predictions, none of which have eventuated.

Why isn’t this epic fail of “science” being called out?

Maybe it shouldn’t be regarded as “science” at all?

My friend, eminent climate scientist Dr Madhav Khandekar complemented me on this paper, but also said I had omitted one point. I said, “I know Madhav, but I just got tired of writing.”

“There are numerous highly credible observations that falsify the CAGW hypothesis and many are listed herein, but as Albert Einstein famously stated ‘One would be enough’.”

This from your paper says it all –

“The ability to correctly predict significant climate events is probably the best objective measure of scientific competence in the field of climate.
It is important to note that every scary prediction made by the Global Warming/Climate Change alarmists has failed to materialize –
they have a perfect negative predictive track record and thus perfect negative credibility . “

How about: We’ve seen about a 100 ppm (0.01%) increase in CO2 in 100 years. Water vapor in the atmosphere (a more potent GHG) varies by about +/- 1.5% (15,000 ppm). The difference in water vapor concentration between 2.00% and 1.99% or 2.01% would be more significant in terms of green house effect than the entire change on C02 concentration that’s been observed. But we have no way of precisely measuring global average water vapor so we have no way to determine what, if any, effect carbon dioxide might be having. Hence climate alarmists resort to computer models to calculate the CO2 theoretical effect – but to get an alarming result they must include an assumption that temperature increase caused by CO2 must cause an increase in H2O. That assumption is not supported by observational evidence.

Waza. I can shut up most CAGW promoters with a simple question….

‘What level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere should we aim for? And why?’

They usually cannot answer that simple question because they’ve never thought about it.

You can also ask what average Global Temp. we should aim for (as ridiculous as such a number would be).

Or. What is the most abundant ‘Greenhouse gas?’

A lot of people may disagree, but I would start by emphasizing the insanity of net zero. These policies will cripple the economies of the west, without making any meaningful cuts to CO2. The emission cuts we make, and the devastating economic impact they inflict, mean nothing if China and India keep building a new coal plant every other day.

This is not an emotional argument. It’s not even a scientific argument. It’s just simply logic. Even people who are deluded by the catastrophe narrative can’t argue against this logic.

A climate fanatic will not be swayed by a few facts offered over a brief encounter.
It would be better to use Derg’s suggestion of utilizing Alex Epstein’s ideas: try
to make the moral case for fossil fuels rather than pure climate skepticism.
Remind them that worldwide >2 million people die each year from indoor respiratory diseases due having to use wood or dung to heat their home or cook their food.
Thus the current climate policies limiting energy are responsible for real, ongoing deaths which is imoral.
Show them that you care about people! And by doing so, you will make it harder for them to dismiss your other positions due to your humanistic stance.
And laugh, smile and even say “I don’t know”, ie don’t be strident or condescending.
As someone on WUWT has mentioned: most of the people have been duped into believing in a climate crisis. All they are exposed to are the strawman arguments foisted on the skeptics by the climate “knaves”. Above all, be patient.
Good Luck!

On Failed Global Warming Predictions:

By the end of 2020, the climate doomsters (aka the IPCC and the radical greens) were proved wrong in their scary climate predictions 48 times. At 50:50 odds for each prediction, that is like flipping a coin 48 times and losing every time! The probability of that being mere random ignorance is 1 in 281 trillion! But no sensible person makes a 50:50 prediction – at 60:40 the odds against being this wrong are 1 in 13 quintillion; at 70:30 the odds are 1 in 13 septillion. Stop being respectful to these blatant CAGW fraudsters.

When the VA rheumatologist prescribed HCQ for my osteoarthritis, they did a preliminary evaluation of my color vision and told me that they would check annually for any changes.

Now, if someone were to take HCQ prophylactically for COVID, they might well have been on it for over two years at this point in time, without a doctor’s supervision and without checks to be sure that their color vision wasn’t degrading.

I am apparently very sensitive to the drug. Within a couple of weeks of starting it, my systolic BP rose from 120 to 160, and within a month I started having problems with the muscles in my legs. After convincing my rheumatologist to go off the drug, my BP came down almost immediately. My legs are getting better, but are still not back to what they were before I started using HCQ.

You have to understand that everyone reacts differently to drugs and toxins, which is why toxicity is defined in terms of milligrams of toxin per kilogram of weight that results in 50% mortality.

There is an old saying that a man who acts as his own attorney has a fool for a client. What about someone who acts as his own doctor?

I had a good friend who was on HCQ for Lupus. Apparently it is effective enough that it remains a go to drug for that. If a patient suffers bad side effects, I suspect she is switched to a less effective drug. The drug has, of course, been given to 100s of millions over 70-80yrs. Working in malarial countries off and on since the mid 1960s (last time in Brazil in 2018), I took a goodly amount without much sign of side effects (lucky me, of course.).

Aspirin was one of the most universally used medications for over a century (sourced from willow bark by
Native people I guess it’s been used many thousands of years). At about the time lbuprophen and acetimophen came out aspirin suddenly became one of the most scary drugs you could take!!

Many may not know that viagra was developed by a dermatologist. The unexpected side effect it had led to its main use today!

As a boy mercurachrome and iodine were liberally applied to cuts and abrasions, and iodine in water was gargled for sore throats. Kids played with mercury, slivered pennies with it, and lead’s low melting point provided some fun. My first business venture at about 10 y.o. was breaking blobs of asphalt into chew-size pieces for sale at a few pennies a piece to kids in the neighborhood. The blobs were collected from below spigots in a chain of tank cars along a rail siding. You chewed it and spit out the bad stuff unit you had a lovely piece of black gum to chew. Yeah a lot of things are bad for you but most, not as bad as we think.

I agree that in general, you shouldn’t medicate your self, but there was a lot of commercial and political chaotic skulduggery going on at the time with the wonderful windfall possibilities for getting rich among the ‘experts’. Not the least was the egregious study reported in Lancet ruling out HCQ as a therapy by administering 800mg a day. 250mg of medicine with, IIRC, 150mg of HCQ is the malarial dose. Modern science ad practiced today. Look how Democrat states ‘offed’ most of the Covid casualties! Certainly, this was politics overwhelming medical science. I believe this ugly state of affairs was what spawned a lot of anti vax behavior.

Next time I’m going to ask my doctor who he voted for before getting medical attention.

Ah, yes! Mercury as a toy at school! Back in my student days in the largest city in east Texas we played with Mercury on many occasions. It was truly fascinating to curious boys as we experimented with various ways to play with the liquid metal. Silver dimes were in our pocket and the instant attraction of Mercury to the silver meant that we carried and distributed many dollars worth of those shiny and slick coins. When we were playing, you can be sure that many of the beautiful silver bbs that were rolling around on the table were lost off the edge. Yes – I will say that most all schools in the world at the time (1950s & 60s) were loaded with Mercury on the floors and edges of the walls, slowly vaporizing into the air we breathed daily.
Despite the danges of my youth and adult adventures I’m still healthy and having fun in my 70s!!
More playing with old cars these days and none of them are Mercury models!

Because I never was an anti-vaxxer- I trusted vaccines- having gotten the swine flu shot
back in the ’70s. With the problems of the Wuhan vaccine & the “militaristic” jamming it
down our throats, it’s definitely a possibility. I hadn’t known that squalene had been
used as the USAF protocol included two antidotes- atropine & ~ benzodiazepine (?)-
which were used when I was in the service in the early ’80s.

The CW gear, which included a charcoal suit, was comparable to wearing full winter
regalia- snow-mobile suit, winter parka, ski mask, two pairs of gloves, & boots. With a
summer birth month, I had to wear that doing my pre-flight & flying for ~ 1.5 hr (~ 4 hrs
total) on a hot TX day. Once the engines were started, I had AC to help cool me off.
The trick was to drink enough water to keep from dehydrating but not enough to need
to relieve oneself. They maybe should have included a Dependz in the kit!

The NIH knew the masks were quite ineffective in 2018 as is revealed
in this clip from Laurie Garrett. It was all about getting us afraid
& being trained to ask “how high” after being told to jump!

https://www.theblaze.com/news/laurie-garrett-mask-mandate-video

https://twitter.com/RandPaul/status/1523718282829651969

Last December, I found a study done in 2019 by Oxford that stated
neither masks nor N95s were effective against viruses. By February, it
had been “disappeared” down the memory hole. Luckily, I saved it:

https://academic.oup.com/ofid/article/5/suppl_1/S51/5206102

While I do believe the N95 is better than a basic mask (Wiki them),
most of mask’s efficacy is from a “hankie” effect used by the spreader.

The BBC’s Panorama programme is a flagship current affairs documentary programme,. In days of yore – it started in 1953 – it did what we used to call investigative journalism – when hacks did real journalism without fear or favour. Now it’s morphed into the usual BBC fayre;  reportage that hits the emotion buttons first and foremost. If you’ve seen the BBC’s coverage of Ukraine you’ll know exactly what I am referring to.

This week the BBC’s Climate Editor was found to have ‘made stuff up’ in an edition of Panorama titled Wild Weather.  Now, with a serious programme like Panorama you could be forgiven for thinking the BBC would issue a correction to maintain the programme’s integrity. You might even think their Climate Editor would have been given a stern talking to… but no. According to Guido Fawkes:

“BBC News released a statement saying “it accepted the wording in the programme was not as clear as it should have been and a public acknowledgement was put on the BBC’s Corrections and Clarifications website before the complaint reached the ECU [Editorial Complaints Unit ]”

https://order-order.com/2022/05/10/bbc-investigation-slams-own-climate-editor-for-false-global-warming-claims/

https://www.bbc.co.uk/helpandfeedback/corrections_clarifications

Now in my book, Rowlatt set out to deceive. He knows full well what the true picture is, but he’s pushing a narrative and that [the cause] in his mind is what counts. You do have to look hard to even know the BBC has acknowledged ‘a mistake’. Few have even heard of a BBC Corrections and Clarifications website. So, it’s ultra low key on the BBC. And in the media?

The Daily Mail – BBC climate editor made false claims on global warming

Daily Express – BBC under fire for ‘misleading’ claim

GB News – BBC climate editor found to have made ‘misleading’ claims

Others daring to break the news include

NotALotOfPeopleKnowThat

I seriously doubt he knows any such thing. He is a PPE graduate. He almost certainly has not studied any numerate sciences since the age of about 15.What science he will have learnt will have been rote-learnt “facts”. He will have no understanding that science is a framework for reasoning with provisional information; that there are no facts, there are only conjectures that have so far withstood all attempt to falsify them. He will not understand the the need to try to falsify. He will detest the attempt. He will be persuaded by group-think and consensus and parroting.

He is not wicked; he is unqualified.I can forgive him that. I cannot forgive the BBC for putting him in that role.

Agreed that poop and compost won’t cut it to feed 7-12b people. What peta may be saying is that the fossis we currently rely on so heavily are not an infinite resource. At some point we will need to replace the feedstocks used to make the fertilizers that we currently produce from fossil hydrocarbons. How are we planning to do that?

It’s a great question to ask because prematurely abandoning fossil fuels implies in my mind famine and mass death. If our governments can’t explain the plan then they need to quit with the net zero insanity.

The Vermont Dem/Progs appear to not being able to see the forest for the trees.

They would have imposed MAJOR additional HEATING COST BURDENS on Vermonters, who have been fearfully looking forward to a DIRE FUTURE with:

Increased inflation rates,
Increased interest rates,
Increased energy prices,
Increased food prices,
Increased shipping costs,
Increased materials prices, such as lithium, cobalt, titanium, aluminum, copper, fertilizers.
Increased supply chain disruptions

Most of these are due to the US, the largest economy in the world, being grossly mismanaged by the pump-priming, deficit-spending, and the dollar-printing (to cover deficits) by woke Dem/Prog amateurs, who, after a 2020 Coup d’Etat, have been very busy:

1) Imposing THEIR disastrous, wokeness onto others, including on our pre-school children, and K-12 children, with corrupted textbooks and CRT programs, etc.

2) Managing THEIR disastrous, very costly, ludicrous, “open border policy”.
As a result, the prices of wind, solar and battery systems have become about 25% higher in 2022 than in 2020, which means:

1) Net-Zero (whatever that means), by whatever date, will be much more expensive to achieve

2) Electricity used by heat pumps and electric vehicles will be much more expensive in the future; in Munich, Germany the price to charge an EV was raised by 80%!!

Read this article to get up to speed.

US natural gas prices have surged to the highest level since the financial crisis in 2008, as strong demand for LNG from buyers in Europe and Asia puts pressure on inventories.

Trading in futures, for gas delivered to the Henry Hub, in Louisiana, is at almost $9/million Btu, up from just over $3 at the same point in 2021, and less than $3 in 2019.

This is due to Biden’s handlers shipping OUR liquid natural gas, LNG, (and crude oil) to Europe to make the BIG bucks, but that raises prices of many products in the US.

In Europe, LNG prices are $30/million Btu, the same as Asia. See image and URL

Prices are due to go much higher after the EU stupidly imposes an oil and gas ban on Russia

The decision to ban gas from Russia may have been taken out of the hands of both the EU and Russia. Ukraine has unilaterally decided to stop the gas flow from one pipeline that apparently runs through Russian occupied territory and supplies about a third of the EU’s supply of gas. Ukraine has stated they will only supply gas to EU through a pipeline that runs through Ukraine held territory which will result in a major loss of volume.

If investigative resources permitted, the producers of the documentary assert the number of “mules” discovered would be double, triple if those making fewer than 10 drops per day were included.

Interesting too was the revelation that the technology & methodology these investigators were using also uncovered the perpetrators of the shooting of an 8 y.o. child during a street altercation.
This evidence was handed to the FBI and resulted in 2 guys being charged.

At 54:40 Wisconsin’s mail in vote security is discussed. And some palaver about how after that point the vote isn’t traceable. Here’s what Wisconsin’s mail in portion of the ballot looks like:

comment image

The mail in ballot is not secret. The envelope has the voter’s name & address on the outside, and the naked ballot is all that there is on the inside. There is no internal unmarked envelope with my “secret” secure vote inside. Whoever opened that envelope could see how I voted.

Besides that, you can bet that come next November the mules will NOT be instructed to take a photo of the drop box and to NOT carry their cell phone.

And further more, during the run-up the the 2020 election there were very few TV ads for Joe Biden. TV ads are expensive, and it’s rather obvious that at 10 to 20 dollars per mule delivery is where the campaign money was spent.

Your thoughts are the same as mine. The mules will certainly be ordered to leave their cell phone at home. Just as they got the word to wear gloves after someone got caught in Arizona based on fingerprint evidence. Lessons learned. Only Republicans don’t do that.

Video cameras may mysteriously fail on apparently random timeframes (during which coincidentally large numbers of voters will decide to drop off their ballots).

How do we know that the ballots that went into the counting machine are the ballots that came out of the mailers? Of course we don’t. That depends on there being a trustworthy Republican pollwatcher who is not intimidated into letting ballots out of their sight before going into counting machines. An entire set of fake ballots could be swapped out. Or 3 out of 5 Trump ballots could just drop into the trash to be replaced later with Biden ballots reintroduced to make the vote count match the count of mailers. The opportunities for cheating are too numerous to list. In my town, when you vote in person, you feed the ballot into the reader. No chain of custody gaps there!

What we should be demanding is an end to mail-in and dropbox voting. If early voting is really needed, why can’t the voter go do an in-person early vote?

I imagine it’s already too late to put a stop to the fraud coming in November. Fortunately though, one thing in our favor at least on the House vote is that it will be very difficult to corrupt the 60-75 competitive races where they don’t own any of the polling places. It is still certain that the same fraud will be in play in the states where the Senate races are competitive. Urban centers like Philadelphia and Milwaukee will be able to steal the vote for the whole state. So I fully expect the Dems to steal the Senate as they stole it in Atlanta with the Georgia runoffs.

I don’t know that they’re all that scared O M W. Seems like the censorship on this story is airtight. Fox won’t touch it and even Newsmax seems to have no recent articles.

RINOs like Kemp and Raffensperger seem to be in on the scam. Slow-walking the investigation. I smell a bunch of swamp critters.

Inevitably if they can’t continue to suppress the story altogether, they’re going to say ok some of the ballots may have been delivered irregularly but they were all collected from eligible voters, so where’s the harm?

We can’t prove that fraudulent votes were cast (meaning ballots filled out by someone other than the registered voter).

We can’t prove that money passed hands or that anyone was intimidated into signing a mail-in envelope where the ballot was pre-filled out by the harvester.

We can’t even prove that fake ballots were printed out of state, filled out and counted without even being placed into mailers. (Remember the reports of reams of ballots that were never folded and the outside envelopes that were conveniently discarded so that no reconciliation could be possible?)

With the deafening silence following the release of 2000 Mules, I am very disheartened. It’s likely that the criminals will orchestrate a “surprise comeback” by the Demonrats.

Lessons have been learned and applied, even if it won’t immediately affect the USA; after years of hemming and hawing, the UK has finally passed a law requiring photo ID to vote. It passed into law very quietly earlier this year and should take effect from next year or thereabouts.

How could Biden, who could not get more than a few dozen people to his rallies, win that majority? Negative credibility.
Canada is already finished, destroyed by the Trudeau WEF fascists. If the USA fails, everything fails.

HERE IS THE NEXT BIG SCAM FROM THE WEF AND WHO – THE WHO TREATY

We can confidently assume that the corrupt-and-incompetent Trudeau government will sign the proposed WHO treaty, which will destroy Canada’s autonomy and give control of our government to the uber-corrupt World Health Organization. Trudeau and his cabinet are disloyal to Canada – they are traitors, loyal to Klaus Schwab and the fascist World Economic Forum. They have already plundered the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and this WHO Treaty will destroy the Charter, Canada’s Constitution and our status as an independent nation.

It was obvious from the very start in early 2020 that the alleged Covid-19 illness was NOT a major pandemic, because there was NO increase in total deaths in Alberta or Canada above the historic trend to July 1, 2020. No increase in total deaths means no real pandemic.

As I published on 21March2020, all we needed to do was over-protect the very elderly and infirm and send everyone else back to work and school. . Six months later the top physicians and researchers in the world published the same recommendation in the Great Barrington Declaration.

The Covid-19 “vaccines” were toxic and ineffective, as I advised our Alberta government on 8Jan2021, before they were deployed in Alberta. It is now clear that the total deaths and major injuries from these toxic “vaccines” will exceed the total harm from the Covid-19 virus.

The Covid-19 alleged “pandemic” was a costly and harmful fraud from the start.

WCH LEADERS ON THE URGENT NEED TO EXPOSE AND STOP THE WHO

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE WHO PANDEMIC TREATY
Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola May 10, 2022
STORY AT-A-GLANCE
·        The World Health Organization has started drafting a global pandemic treaty on pandemic preparedness that would grant it absolute power over global biosecurity, such as the power to implement digital identities/vaccine passports, mandatory vaccinations, travel restrictions, standardized medical care and more
·        The WHO is not qualified to make global health decisions. As just one example, the WHO didn’t publicly admit SARS-CoV-2 was airborne until the end of December 2021, yet scientists knew the virus was airborne within weeks of the pandemic being declared. The WHO also ignored early advice about airborne transmission
·        More importantly, a one-size-fits-all approach to pandemic response simply does not work, because pandemic threats are not identical in all parts of the world. Even people in the same region do not have identical risk and may not need or benefit from identical treatment
·        The WHO will accept two more days of public comment on the treaty, June 16 and 17, 2022, so prepare your statements now. The World Health Assembly will also vote on amendments to the International Health Regulations, May 22-28, 2022, which may also strip away more individual rights and liberties.

On May 22-28, 2022, ultimate control over America’s healthcare system, and hence its national sovereignty, will be delivered for a vote to the World Health Organization’s governing legislative body, the World Health Assembly (WHA).
This threat is contained in new amendments to WHO’s International Health Regulations, proposed by the Biden administration, that are scheduled as “Provisional agenda item 16.2” at the upcoming conference on May 22-28, 2022.”

The text of the Second Amendment reads in full: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

People often forget to discuss the implications of the first part: “well-regulated Militia” now in 2022.

I assume militia = infantry.
What about a well regulated militia member, that is, what would “well regulated” infantry soldier have in 2022?

Duh. Look at the current hot conflict. Soldiers have very small range missile launchers.

So wouldn’t the Second Amendment mean that US citizens should also carry missiles?

(A missile works by the physics of rapidly expanding gases; like a normal firearm of now, or a firearm of the area when the US Constitution was drafted.)

early ’80s, IIRC, the weapon, the firing pin & the ammo had to be kept in three separate places- whether
they had to be locked up or in three different rooms, too, I don’t remember. When people give in to the

2A is written in such a way as to mention both groups that gave birth to the Federal Government: the States and the People. The Constitution, after all, is written in the voice of the People and ratified by the States. 2A declares both groups have a vested interest in The People being free to own firearms. Attacking 2A via “well-regulated militia” is trash “logic”.

The second amendment was written by people opposed to having a large standing army and believed that a small cadre of professional soldiers with a large pool of ‘well regulated militia’, or a more up-to-date version of the Athenian citizen-soldier, would be enough to form a large enough army in times of need. And no, a missile launcher and missile does not operate the same as a musket and ball.

Hamilton wrote that a militia consisting of citizens would likely stand and defend themselves, their families, their neighbors and their locale against any outside attack but would not be likely to do so if sent by the federal government to other states to participate in an attack on those people. The fear of a large standing federal army was because history had shown that tyrants use those large standing armies to suppress their own citizens.

What is the latest thinking on the impact of CFCs (in the ‘70 – ‘90 time period) on ozone in atmosphere and warming effects observed through 2010? With “manmade” CO2 not driving more than about 4% of warming and ZERO warming the last 7-10 years have we seen the last of the impact?
Does the loss of ozone explain the warming? Any insight is welcome.

“Does the loss of ozone explain the warming?”

Good question BigE.

My understanding about the ozone scare nonsense is the supposed harmful cell damaging effects from increased UV exposure.

The “science” on this is sketchy.

The fluctuating, pulsing polar holes of the ozone layer are regarded as evidence of its depletion from human activity. Some industrial compounds (chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s) chemically react with the O3 molecule of the ozone layer of the stratosphere thus depleting it.

There are other explanations; the ozone layer is relatively thin (at 1 atm it would be less than 1/8 of an inch thick) and in a constant state of replenishment as well as depletion. 12 to 25 miles up high energy UV splits the O2 molecule into two atomic O1 molecules that then combine with O2 to form the unstable, temporary O3 ozone molecule which absorbs low energy UV.

It is now understood the main reasons for the changing polar ozone hole sizes are natural and include the seasonal lack of light, the atmospheric fluid dynamics of the polar vortices, fluctuations with naturally occurring nitrous oxide and most importantly, the solar variances in UV radiation.

The question of the ‘Antarctic Ozone Hole’ has been around for very long time. Supposedly, the chlorine-containing compounds were the root cause. This was the basis for that ‘Montreal Protocol’ that gradually eliminated those “ozone-busting” chemicals.

The very first time I heard about this, sometime in the ’70’s (I’m in my 70’s now … ), the first question I had was, ‘how do very heavy compounds, mostly from the Northern Hemisphere, get all the way down to the Antarctic, and WAAAAAAAAAY up in the atmosphere?’

No one had an answer.

Lo and behold!!!! a few years ago I was reading a very wonderful book by the late Marcel Leroux, who postulated that the almost continuous eruption of Mr. Erebus was largely responsible for the Antarctic ‘ozone hole’. It made so much more sense than the ridiculous idea that some refrigerants are “leaking” half-a-world-away and getting through the tropopause. As mentioned in your post, there are other causes as well, working at various time scales and to variable effect(s).

Your note got me searching harder. Thanks. According to the USEIA, California 2019 produced 4.63 million barrels (Iowa 104 million) of fuel ethanol each year. If it’s mostly corn, that’s 350K acres production. According to the Pacific Institute, 2.2 million acre feet of applied water was used for corn production in 2014. I did see that there are several ethanol processing plants in California which must use a lot of water.

Currently, the CaDWR shows about 15 million acre feet of water in reservoirs there. It still seems that a couple of million acre feet per year that wasn’t burned up supporting green mandates would be helpful to the water supplies.
