I have learnt so much from WUWT and read a lot of sceptic to sceptic conversations. But I am interested in up to date ways for short sharp sceptic to public conversations. As a sceptic( well really a denier) of CAGW I am always looking for better ways to convince fence sitting work colleagues.
Any thoughts of the most important topics for quick climate change discussions/speeches.

I believe Alex Epstein is doing incredible work in the area of persuasion. Although he is not as skeptical of the “science” as I am, his work on the benefits of fossil fuels is incredible. He believes that human flourishing is done via fossil fuels.
Yet I once talked to a French philosophy teacher, and while not saying it exactly, he ostensibly implied that he did not follow indirect, model based “evidence” and was not in the common crowd.
why start temperature work in 1850? End of little ice age. Do you want to go back to that time with low CO2, people starving, people freezing?

if research showed that climate change was wonderful and helpful to humanity would the scientists get more funding?

One of the many traits that made Einstein a once-in-a-generation genius was that he fully expected to be proven wrong in the future. It didn’t bother him. He welcomed the challenge. I wonder how he’d answer today’s “scientists” and their religious fervor in their declarations of doom?
As well as short, sharp discussion points, I reckon we also need the “overwhelming volume of facts” paper.
To wit – next month is the 50th anniversary of the start of UNEP (United Nations Environmental Prrogramme), which began issuing the doom and gloom predictions.
So we’ve now had 50 years of ever-increasing doom predictions, none of which have eventuated.

How about: We’ve seen about a 100 ppm (0.01%) increase in CO2 in 100 years. Water vapor in the atmosphere (a more potent GHG) varies by about +/- 1.5% (15,000 ppm). The difference in water vapor concentration between 2.00% and 1.99% or 2.01% would be more significant in terms of green house effect than the entire change on C02 concentration that’s been observed. But we have no way of precisely measuring global average water vapor so we have no way to determine what, if any, effect carbon dioxide might be having. Hence climate alarmists resort to computer models to calculate the CO2 theoretical effect – but to get an alarming result they must include an assumption that temperature increase caused by CO2 must cause an increase in H2O. That assumption is not supported by observational evidence.

When I hear “forcing”, I think “plunger in the toilet tank being pulled up”: I can force more water in the tank.
I don’t think climate is a plunger so…
A lot of people may disagree, but I would start by emphasizing the insanity of net zero. These policies will cripple the economies of the west, without making any meaningful cuts to CO2. The emission cuts we make, and the devastating economic impact they inflict, mean nothing if China and India keep building a new coal plant every other day.
This is not an emotional argument. It’s not even a scientific argument. It’s just simply logic. Even people who are deluded by the catastrophe narrative can’t argue against this logic.

A climate fanatic will not be swayed by a few facts offered over a brief encounter.
It would be better to use Derg’s suggestion of utilizing Alex Epstein’s ideas: try
to make the moral case for fossil fuels rather than pure climate skepticism.
Remind them that worldwide >2 million people die each year from indoor respiratory diseases due having to use wood or dung to heat their home or cook their food.
Thus the current climate policies limiting energy are responsible for real, ongoing deaths which is imoral.
Show them that you care about people! And by doing so, you will make it harder for them to dismiss your other positions due to your humanistic stance.
And laugh, smile and even say “I don’t know”, ie don’t be strident or condescending.
As someone on WUWT has mentioned: most of the people have been duped into believing in a climate crisis. All they are exposed to are the strawman arguments foisted on the skeptics by the climate “knaves”. Above all, be patient.

When the VA rheumatologist prescribed HCQ for my osteoarthritis, they did a preliminary evaluation of my color vision and told me that they would check annually for any changes.
Now, if someone were to take HCQ prophylactically for COVID, they might well have been on it for over two years at this point in time, without a doctor’s supervision and without checks to be sure that their color vision wasn’t degrading.
I am apparently very sensitive to the drug. Within a couple of weeks of starting it, my systolic BP rose from 120 to 160, and within a month I started having problems with the muscles in my legs. After convincing my rheumatologist to go off the drug, my BP came down almost immediately. My legs are getting better, but are still not back to what they were before I started using HCQ.
You have to understand that everyone reacts differently to drugs and toxins, which is why toxicity is defined in terms of milligrams of toxin per kilogram of weight that results in 50% mortality.
There is an old saying that a man who acts as his own attorney has a fool for a client. What about someone who acts as his own doctor?
I had a good friend who was on HCQ for Lupus. Apparently it is effective enough that it remains a go to drug for that. If a patient suffers bad side effects, I suspect she is switched to a less effective drug. The drug has, of course, been given to 100s of millions over 70-80yrs. Working in malarial countries off and on since the mid 1960s (last time in Brazil in 2018), I took a goodly amount without much sign of side effects (lucky me, of course.).
Aspirin was one of the most universally used medications for over a century (sourced from willow bark by
Native people I guess it’s been used many thousands of years). At about the time lbuprophen and acetimophen came out aspirin suddenly became one of the most scary drugs you could take!!

As a boy mercurachrome and iodine were liberally applied to cuts and abrasions, and iodine in water was gargled for sore throats. Kids played with mercury, slivered pennies with it, and lead’s low melting point provided some fun. My first business venture at about 10 y.o. was breaking blobs of asphalt into chew-size pieces for sale at a few pennies a piece to kids in the neighborhood. The blobs were collected from below spigots in a chain of tank cars along a rail siding. You chewed it and spit out the bad stuff unit you had a lovely piece of black gum to chew. Yeah a lot of things are bad for you but most, not as bad as we think.
I agree that in general, you shouldn’t medicate your self, but there was a lot of commercial and political chaotic skulduggery going on at the time with the wonderful windfall possibilities for getting rich among the ‘experts’. Not the least was the egregious study reported in Lancet ruling out HCQ as a therapy by administering 800mg a day. 250mg of medicine with, IIRC, 150mg of HCQ is the malarial dose. Modern science ad practiced today. Look how Democrat states ‘offed’ most of the Covid casualties! Certainly, this was politics overwhelming medical science. I believe this ugly state of affairs was what spawned a lot of anti vax behavior.
Next time I’m going to ask my doctor who he voted for before getting medical attention.
Ah, yes! Mercury as a toy at school! Back in my student days in the largest city in east Texas we played with Mercury on many occasions. It was truly fascinating to curious boys as we experimented with various ways to play with the liquid metal. Silver dimes were in our pocket and the instant attraction of Mercury to the silver meant that we carried and distributed many dollars worth of those shiny and slick coins. When we were playing, you can be sure that many of the beautiful silver bbs that were rolling around on the table were lost off the edge. Yes – I will say that most all schools in the world at the time (1950s & 60s) were loaded with Mercury on the floors and edges of the walls, slowly vaporizing into the air we breathed daily.
Despite the danges of my youth and adult adventures I’m still healthy and having fun in my 70s!!

Because I never was an anti-vaxxer- I trusted vaccines- having gotten the swine flu shot

The BBC’s Panorama programme is a flagship current affairs documentary programme,. In days of yore – it started in 1953 – it did what we used to call investigative journalism – when hacks did real journalism without fear or favour. This week the BBC’s Climate Editor was found to have ‘made stuff up’ in an edition of Panorama titled Wild Weather. Now, with a serious programme like Panorama you could be forgiven for thinking the BBC would issue a correction to maintain the programme’s integrity. You might even think their Climate Editor would have been given a stern talking to… but no. According to Guido Fawkes:

Believe me, organic farming that relies on poop and compost will never supply the highly concentrated and high productivity farming that feeds the billions of people on earth today. Trying to do so will only result in massive starvation.
Agreed that poop and compost won’t cut it to feed 7-12b people. What peta may be saying is that the fossis we currently rely on so heavily are not an infinite resource. At some point we will need to replace the feedstocks used to make the fertilizers that we currently produce from fossil hydrocarbons. How are we planning to do that?
It’s a great question to ask because prematurely abandoning fossil fuels implies in my mind famine and mass death. If our governments can’t explain the plan then they need to quit with the net zero insanity.

They would have imposed MAJOR additional HEATING COST BURDENS on Vermonters, who have been fearfully looking forward to a DIRE FUTURE with:
Increased inflation rates,
Increased interest rates,
Increased energy prices,
Increased food prices,
Increased shipping costs,
Increased materials prices, such as lithium, cobalt, titanium, aluminum, copper, fertilizers.

Trading in futures, for gas delivered to the Henry Hub, in Louisiana, is at almost $9/million Btu, up from just over $3 at the same point in 2021, and less than $3 in 2019.

The mail in ballot is not secret. The envelope has the voter’s name & address on the outside, and the naked ballot is all that there is on the inside. There is no internal unmarked envelope with my “secret” secure vote inside. Whoever opened that envelope could see how I voted.

How do we know that the ballots that went into the counting machine are the ballots that came out of the mailers? Of course we don’t. That depends on there being a trustworthy Republican pollwatcher who is not intimidated into letting ballots out of their sight before going into counting machines. An entire set of fake ballots could be swapped out. Or 3 out of 5 Trump ballots could just drop into the trash to be replaced later with Biden ballots reintroduced to make the vote count match the count of mailers. The opportunities for cheating are too numerous to list. In my town, when you vote in person, you feed the ballot into the reader. No chain of custody gaps there!
What we should be demanding is an end to mail-in and dropbox voting. If early voting is really needed, why can’t the voter go do an in-person early vote?
I imagine it’s already too late to put a stop to the fraud coming in November. Fortunately though, one thing in our favor at least on the House vote is that it will be very difficult to corrupt the 60-75 competitive races where they don’t own any of the polling places. It is still certain that the same fraud will be in play in the states where the Senate races are competitive. Urban centers like Philadelphia and Milwaukee will be able to steal the vote for the whole state. So I fully expect the Dems to steal the Senate as they stole it in Atlanta with the Georgia runoffs.

Inevitably if they can’t continue to suppress the story altogether, they’re going to say ok some of the ballots may have been delivered irregularly but they were all collected from eligible voters, so where’s the harm?
We can’t prove that fraudulent votes were cast (meaning ballots filled out by someone other than the registered voter).
We can’t prove that money passed hands or that anyone was intimidated into signing a mail-in envelope where the ballot was pre-filled out by the harvester.
We can’t even prove that fake ballots were printed out of state, filled out and counted without even being placed into mailers. (Remember the reports of reams of ballots that were never folded and the outside envelopes that were conveniently discarded so that no reconciliation could be possible?)

Lessons have been learned and applied, even if it won’t immediately affect the USA; after years of hemming and hawing, the UK has finally passed a law requiring photo ID to vote. It passed into law very quietly earlier this year and should take effect from next year or thereabouts.

The second amendment was written by people opposed to having a large standing army and believed that a small cadre of professional soldiers with a large pool of ‘well regulated militia’, or a more up-to-date version of the Athenian citizen-soldier, would be enough to form a large enough army in times of need. And no, a missile launcher and missile does not operate the same as a musket and ball.
Hamilton wrote that a militia consisting of citizens would likely stand and defend themselves, their families, their neighbors and their locale against any outside attack but would not be likely to do so if sent by the federal government to other states to participate in an attack on those people. The fear of a large standing federal army was because history had shown that tyrants use those large standing armies to suppress their own citizens.

What is the latest thinking on the impact of CFCs (in the ‘70 – ‘90 time period) on ozone in atmosphere and warming effects observed through 2010? With “manmade” CO2 not driving more than about 4% of warming and ZERO warming the last 7-10 years have we seen the last of the impact?
Does the loss of ozone explain the warming? Any insight is welcome.
My understanding about the ozone scare nonsense is the supposed harmful cell damaging effects from increased UV exposure.
The “science” on this is sketchy.
The fluctuating, pulsing polar holes of the ozone layer are regarded as evidence of its depletion from human activity. Some industrial compounds (chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s) chemically react with the O3 molecule of the ozone layer of the stratosphere thus depleting it.
There are other explanations; the ozone layer is relatively thin (at 1 atm it would be less than 1/8 of an inch thick) and in a constant state of replenishment as well as depletion. 12 to 25 miles up high energy UV splits the O2 molecule into two atomic O1 molecules that then combine with O2 to form the unstable, temporary O3 ozone molecule which absorbs low energy UV.
It is now understood the main reasons for the changing polar ozone hole sizes are natural and include the seasonal lack of light, the atmospheric fluid dynamics of the polar vortices, fluctuations with naturally occurring nitrous oxide and most importantly, the solar variances in UV radiation.
The question of the ‘Antarctic Ozone Hole’ has been around for very long time. Supposedly, the chlorine-containing compounds were the root cause. This was the basis for that ‘Montreal Protocol’ that gradually eliminated those “ozone-busting” chemicals.
The very first time I heard about this, sometime in the ’70’s (I’m in my 70’s now … ), the first question I had was, ‘how do very heavy compounds, mostly from the Northern Hemisphere, get all the way down to the Antarctic, and WAAAAAAAAAY up in the atmosphere?’
No one had an answer.
Lo and behold!!!! a few years ago I was reading a very wonderful book by the late Marcel Leroux, who postulated that the almost continuous eruption of Mr. Erebus was largely responsible for the Antarctic ‘ozone hole’. It made so much more sense than the ridiculous idea that some refrigerants are “leaking” half-a-world-away and getting through the tropopause. As mentioned in your post, there are other causes as well, working at various time scales and to variable effect(s).

Is there information on the water usage in California for growing and processing ethanol for fuel to save the planet? The insufficient storage during the current dry spell seems to not be helped by burning a million? acre feet of water in cars every year. Now they want to add E85 mandates?
Most of the biofuel seems to be coming from corn grown in other states. However, you might want to have a look at the sugarcane being grown in Imperial valley for ethanol fuels.
Somehow, a crop that appears to use twice as much water per acre as corn doesn’t seem like it will help alleviate the water shortages. It could have a better yield, but double?
I don’t know that California grows that much corn & I’d assume they’re importing the ethanol blend
from states that do. Their long growing season is too good to waste on lower valued corn.
Your note got me searching harder. Thanks. According to the USEIA, California 2019 produced 4.63 million barrels (Iowa 104 million) of fuel ethanol each year. If it’s mostly corn, that’s 350K acres production. According to the Pacific Institute, 2.2 million acre feet of applied water was used for corn production in 2014. I did see that there are several ethanol processing plants in California which must use a lot of water.
Currently, the CaDWR shows about 15 million acre feet of water in reservoirs there. It still seems that a couple of million acre feet per year that wasn’t burned up supporting green mandates would be helpful to the water supplies.

It would be better to use Derg’s suggestion of utilizing Alex Epstein’s ideas: try
to make the moral case for fossil fuels rather than pure climate skepticism.
Remind them that worldwide >2 million people die each year from indoor respiratory diseases due having to use wood or dung to heat their home or cook their food.
Thus the current climate policies limiting energy are responsible for real, ongoing deaths which is imoral.
Show them that you care about people! And by doing so, you will make it harder for them to dismiss your other positions due to your humanistic stance.
And laugh, smile and even say “I don’t know”, ie don’t be strident or condescending.

When the VA rheumatologist prescribed HCQ for my osteoarthritis, they did a preliminary evaluation of my color vision and told me that they would check annually for any changes.
Now, if someone were to take HCQ prophylactically for COVID, they might well have been on it for over two years at this point in time, without a doctor’s supervision and without checks to be sure that their color vision wasn’t degrading.
I am apparently very sensitive to the drug. Within a couple of weeks of starting it, my systolic BP rose from 120 to 160, and within a month I started having problems with the muscles in my legs. After convincing my rheumatologist to go off the drug, my BP came down almost immediately. My legs are getting better, but are still not back to what they were before I started using HCQ.
You have to understand that everyone reacts differently to drugs and toxins, which is why toxicity is defined in terms of milligrams of toxin per kilogram of weight that results in 50% mortality.

I had a good friend who was on HCQ for Lupus. Apparently it is effective enough that it remains a go to drug for that. If a patient suffers bad side effects, I suspect she is switched to a less effective drug. The drug has, of course, been given to 100s of millions over 70-80yrs. Working in malarial countries off and on since the mid 1960s (last time in Brazil in 2018), I took a goodly amount without much sign of side effects (lucky me, of course.).
Aspirin was one of the most universally used medications for over a century (sourced from willow bark by
Native people I guess it’s been used many thousands of years). At about the time lbuprophen and acetimophen came out aspirin suddenly became one of the most scary drugs you could take!!

As a boy mercurachrome and iodine were liberally applied to cuts and abrasions, and iodine in water was gargled for sore throats. Kids played with mercury, slivered pennies with it, and lead’s low melting point provided some fun. My first business venture at about 10 y.o. was breaking blobs of asphalt into chew-size pieces for sale at a few pennies a piece to kids in the neighborhood. The blobs were collected from below spigots in a chain of tank cars along a rail siding. You chewed it and spit out the bad stuff unit you had a lovely piece of black gum to chew. Yeah a lot of things are bad for you but most, not as bad as we think.
I agree that in general, you shouldn’t medicate your self, but there was a lot of commercial and political chaotic skulduggery going on at the time with the wonderful windfall possibilities for getting rich among the ‘experts’. Not the least was the egregious study reported in Lancet ruling out HCQ as a therapy by administering 800mg a day. 250mg of medicine with, IIRC, 150mg of HCQ is the malarial dose. Modern science ad practiced today. Look how Democrat states ‘offed’ most of the Covid casualties! Certainly, this was politics overwhelming medical science. I believe this ugly state of affairs was what spawned a lot of anti vax behavior.
Next time I’m going to ask my doctor who he voted for before getting medical attention.
Ah, yes! Mercury as a toy at school! Back in my student days in the largest city in east Texas we played with Mercury on many occasions. It was truly fascinating to curious boys as we experimented with various ways to play with the liquid metal. Silver dimes were in our pocket and the instant attraction of Mercury to the silver meant that we carried and distributed many dollars worth of those shiny and slick coins. When we were playing, you can be sure that many of the beautiful silver bbs that were rolling around on the table were lost off the edge. The mail in ballot is not secret. The envelope has the voter’s name & address on the outside, and the naked ballot is all that there is on the inside. There is no internal unmarked envelope with my “secret” secure vote inside. Whoever opened that envelope could see how I voted.

How do we know that the ballots that went into the counting machine are the ballots that came out of the mailers? Of course we don’t. That depends on there being a trustworthy Republican pollwatcher who is not intimidated into letting ballots out of their sight before going into counting machines. An entire set of fake ballots could be swapped out. Or 3 out of 5 Trump ballots could just drop into the trash to be replaced later with Biden ballots reintroduced to make the vote count match the count of mailers. The opportunities for cheating are too numerous to list. In my town, when you vote in person, you feed the ballot into the reader. No chain of custody gaps there!
What we should be demanding is an end to mail-in and dropbox voting. If early voting is really needed, why can’t the voter go do an in-person early vote?
I imagine it’s already too late to put a stop to the fraud coming in November. Fortunately though, one thing in our favor at least on the House vote is that it will be very difficult to corrupt the 60-75 competitive races where they don’t own any of the polling places. My understanding about the ozone scare nonsense is the supposed harmful cell damaging effects from increased UV exposure.
The “science” on this is sketchy.
The fluctuating, pulsing polar holes of the ozone layer are regarded as evidence of its depletion from human activity. Some industrial compounds (chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s) chemically react with the O3 molecule of the ozone layer of the stratosphere thus depleting it.
There are other explanations; the ozone layer is relatively thin (at 1 atm it would be less than 1/8 of an inch thick) and in a constant state of replenishment as well as depletion. 12 to 25 miles up high energy UV splits the O2 molecule into two atomic O1 molecules that then combine with O2 to form the unstable, temporary O3 ozone molecule which absorbs low energy UV.
It is now understood the main reasons for the changing polar ozone hole sizes are natural and include the seasonal lack of light, the atmospheric fluid dynamics of the polar vortices, fluctuations with naturally occurring nitrous oxide and most importantly, the solar variances in UV radiation.
The question of the ‘Antarctic Ozone Hole’ has been around for very long time. Supposedly, the chlorine-containing compounds were the root cause. This was the basis for that ‘Montreal Protocol’ that gradually eliminated those “ozone-busting” chemicals.
The very first time I heard about this, sometime in the ’70’s (I’m in my 70’s now … ), the first question I had was, ‘how do very heavy compounds, mostly from the Northern Hemisphere, get all the way down to the Antarctic, and WAAAAAAAAAY up in the atmosphere?’
No one had an answer.
Lo and behold!!!! a few years ago I was reading a very wonderful book by the late Marcel Leroux, who postulated that the almost continuous eruption of Mr. Erebus was largely responsible for the Antarctic ‘ozone hole’. It made so much more sense than the ridiculous idea that some refrigerants are “leaking” half-a-world-away and getting through the tropopause. As mentioned in your post, there are other causes as well, working at various time scales and to variable effect(s).

Is there information on the water usage in California for growing and processing ethanol for fuel to save the planet? The insufficient storage during the current dry spell seems to not be helped by burning a million? acre feet of water in cars every year. Now they want to add E85 mandates?
Most of the biofuel seems to be coming from corn grown in other states. However, you might want to have a look at the sugarcane being grown in Imperial valley for ethanol fuels.
Somehow, a crop that appears to use twice as much water per acre as corn doesn’t seem like it will help alleviate the water shortages. It could have a better yield, but double?
I don’t know that California grows that much corn & I’d assume they’re importing the ethanol blend
from states that do. Their long growing season is too good to waste on lower valued corn.
Your note got me searching harder. Thanks. According to the USEIA, California 2019 produced 4.63 million barrels (Iowa 104 million) of fuel ethanol each year. If it’s mostly corn, that’s 350K acres production. According to the Pacific Institute, 2.2 million acre feet of applied water was used for corn production in 2014. I did see that there are several ethanol processing plants in California which must use a lot of water.
Currently, the CaDWR shows about 15 million acre feet of water in reservoirs there. It still seems that a couple of million acre feet per year that wasn’t burned up supporting green mandates would be helpful to the water supplies.
