Spiked exposes the lies told by Roger Harrabin:
The seasons are changing, and for many of us that means it’s time for a spring clean. My back patio has been gathering months’ worth of soil and winter debris, so I now need to blow it up. I will use the same method to clean the grime off my car. After ensuring the area is clear, and any nearby houses or pedestrians are safe, I will subject the car to lots of explosions. In each case, I shall be using a power washer, of the kind that Halfords sells for around 50 quid.
At this point, I expect the pedants among you to start quibbling. The hydraulic pressure from my power washer is not an ‘explosion’, you might point out. Water pressure does not cause ‘a sudden and rapid expansion’, which is how many dictionaries define ‘explosion’. But according to the BBC’s most senior green journalist, environment editor Roger Harrabin, there is no difference between hydraulic pressure and explosions – and Roger’s word is good enough for me.
Harrabin began to deploy the word ‘explosions’ in his reports in 2011, when the UK’s coalition government and the public began to warm to a new and emerging energy resource: shale gas.
Full story here.
The BBC is a very sick organisation.
The nice thing is, at least we’re not the only ones. People are noticing.
His degree was in english, not science, so presumably he knows all about words. )sarc off
“What I say now is only a personal observation, but I believe that if there is a region where fracking could be done safely and successfully it is west Lancashire, with its long association with the chemical industry, with British Nuclear Fuels and with offshore gas and wind.”
Liberal Democrat peer, Lord McNally. House of Lords 5th June 2014
The good Lord went to the same school as me in Blackpool.
Once again we are presented with an enigma: are they stupid or dishonest?
Alex, I’ll take both for a million, please.
Arrogant is the answer. Harobin and his ilk are doing it for your own good. They are lying, and they know they are, but they believe that you are too stupid to think for yourself.
It’s Senator Timothy Wirth thinking: “Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic policy and environmental policy.”
Lying for a cause, which, if factually justified, would not require a lie.
In Leftworld, the ends always justify the means. Lying for the good cause is standard.
Both. Drilling deep into the mythology created around energy, we can see that at heart its about short term profit trumping long term care for the country.
And a lot of that short term profit was being made in Russia.
should stick one of those nice big drill bits up Harra-crap’s ASS!
He’s got enough gas in there to keep Broadcasting house in power and hot showers for 6 months!
It varies, but my go to explanation for this behavior is almost always credulousness. And the people who say things which they know aren’t actually true mostly do so because they think it is for the greater good, as in “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”.
That’s easy … both.
Too often those go hand and hand. They are lying to the people about the threat of increased CO2. But they are also too stupid see how much suffering will be caused by the shut down of the fossil fuel industry.
The BBC has been pumping out propaganda for years. It’s very selective about who gets on air; are they on narrative etc. And it’s tightly bound to the woke political elites:
“Incredibly, a seismic threshold was then set by the UK government at 0.5, which was greeted with widespread astonishment by the industry. As one industry expert recently pointed out: ‘The threshold set is 12 times lower than a quarry-blasting limit and 30 times less than for some construction activities. Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, boasted about his part in setting these ridiculously low limits.’”
Like all good elitists, Davey is linked to private jets. Lots of them
“Davey has pocketed thousands from a couple who make their money from renting out 23,000 private jet flights a year. In 2020 alone, Chris and Tina Leach, owners of the private jet rental company Air Charter, put £16,500 into Davey’s coffers ahead of his leadership campaign. “
“Too many political leaders would let us sleepwalk into a global catastrophe. Boris Johnson and Donald Trump have never cared about the Climate Emergency… we owe it to our children and grandchildren to fight for our planet” – Ed Davey
Meanwhile rather than frack, Johnson paid a visit to death penalty central – aka Saudi Arabia – begging for more output.
They said jog on, son.
0.5? Dropping a large serving spoon would break that limit.
If you have ever used a hydraulic log splitter, well it does sound like an explosion sometimes 🙂
The word “fracking” was derived from the word fracture. From the ‘Free Dictionary:
Fracture: “A break, rupture, or crack”.
Explosion: ” a violent release of energy resulting from a rapid chemical or nuclear reaction, esp one that produces a shock wave, loud noise, heat, and light”.
I have used a log splitter, and even built one. All I ever heard was a “CRACK”!
Like all successful lies there is an element of truth here. Deep drilling is a hazardous process in which the pressure at the drill bit needs to be balanced by the weight of the drilling mud. The drilling process involves setting casing (steel pipe) to seal the overburden strata and to stop ground fluids from entering the hole. Once the hole has reached the final depth the casing pipe needs to be Perforated. This process is done for all cased wells prior to fluid extraction.
The process of perforation not only breaks the steel casing it also generates fractures in the surrounding rock. The process of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) takes the generation of rock fractures a stage further and occurs after perforation. It is the perforation stage that involves explosives in the well bore and NOT the process of fracking.
Generally in horizontal wells that are to be fracked, they use special joints of pipe spaced at the intended fracking intervals with ports which can be opened by a variety of techniques, or else by cutting a hole in the pipe with a high pressure abrasive suspension, then doing a hydraulic fracture at the perf or port. Dozens of fracks per horizontal well means that the fracking process is usually more expensive and time-consuming than drilling the well.
So, no explosive perforation needed.
But have you done it in a shale bed a mile deep in the crust?
Of course Harrabin was behind 28gate. He represents all that is wrong with the BBC. He personally is responsible for untold poverty and misery. He is so ignorant that he believed that converting Drax to burn imported wood chips was a great idea.
The BBC seminar was run by a body set up by Roger Harrabin and funded via a £67,000 grant from the then Labour government (T. Blair) Quelle surprise, eh.
Justin Rowlatt who has taken on the role of BBC environment analyst is cut from the same cloth. Rowlatt’s sister, Cordelia, is/was a leading light in the anti-human Insulate Britain – you know the people who wouldn’t let the sick and dying in ambulances through.
Rowlatt lives in a very posh area of London called Hampstead. He hangs out with people in the “Hampstead Set”.
One of his friends is a woman who was prosecuted for running a school without governmental permission and hence stuffing up various children’s educational chances. Rowlatt keeps some very strange friends indeed.
I won’t hear a word against Justin he’s the BBC Ethical Man
And the Chinese were present at 28gate.
I suspect Harrabin is like so many people who, without any technical/scientific/engineering understanding, seize upon a scientificky sounding word & bandy it around with abandon as if they & they alone are in the know!!! The UK has been fracking in the North Sea for donkeys’ years as it is simply a drilling technique, nothing more, nothing less!!! I used to work with many of these types blurting a particular word at every opportunity!!! I had a relative who used to do likewise, he’d learn a new word & then start using it in the hope that nobody else knew its meaning, so would ask him what it meant, so he could appear learned by explaining its meaning to lesser mortals!!! In the words of the gorgeous Shania Twain, “that don’t impress me much!”.
Is Harrabin by chance postng here under the ID of “griff”!?
They both send crap from the UK.
Perhaps they’re “crap-pals”, you know, just like Pen-Pals but exchanging each others’ crap instead!!!
Brought to you by a generous grant from Gazprom?
The seasons are changing, and for many of us that means it’s time for a spring clean.
Nope immediately the climate changers think of the cattle dooming due to the dryness between the flooding-
How lightning killed nine Queensland cattle in one strike – and what it has to do with climate change | Cattle | The Guardian
Natash knows these things because she’s a rural reporter and knows people wot go to university.
“Experts say lightning strikes 1.5bn times a year, but global heating is causing them to shift further away from the equator”
Presumably, the Guardian staff have never seen lightning in England before.
The cows were all near the (metal wire) fence and it supported by concrete posts – pretty good insulators in bone dry weather,
The actual lightning bolt could have hit the fence at any point along its length but, having seen it happen ##, the lightening probably struck a tree that that been used as the end-point straining post for the fence,
and thereafter ‘jumped’ out as it passed the cattle
## I could have taken you a on a guided tour of my farm in Cumbria.
One of the previous owners (a generous philanthropic sort, name of ‘Wilson’ had planted ‘specimen’ Oak trees along a lot of the fence/hedge lines of the farm. Maybe around 1870.
If you know what you’re looking for, a vertical wound in the bark, can be seen runing from ground level right up into the tree and then up the strongest branch and up into the crown.
In at least half of all those 100+ remaining trees on my farm. Many were suffering the mysterious Oak die-back – they just gradually faded and died??
And that was at a latitude of 55° North, hardly the equator
They could handle the lightning and the climate but not ‘die-back’
It was in fact soil compaction where animals sheltered under the trees in hot sunny weather.
The Great Oak in Sherwood Forest (Robin’s Hood’s oak tree) nearly suffered the same fate – from hordes of enthusiastic human visitors of Victorian times.
Is there A Lesson there?
The lightning ran down the ‘sap layer’ between the bark and the actual trunk, obviously vapouring it and blowing off that vertical strip. Which subsequently healed but left a permanent scar
Occasionally, the farmers immediately (mid 50’s thro 1971) prior to me, used the trees as straining post for steel-wire fences.
And when they had done that, the vertical wound in the bark always terminated where the fence wire had grown into the tree
The farmer should have seen that in his trees and simply earthed his fence at regular intervals.
bone idle lazy muppet
Another disastrous Socialist policy, whilst well intentioned, encouraging thousands of young people to go to university & get dubious degrees in flower arranging & the like, because all young people must have the opportunity to go to university, then a few years later the UK was encouraging Poles, Checks, et al to send their plumbers, electricians, carpenter/joiners, masonry layers, to replace the ones Britain lost by default because no young people wanted to get their hands dirty now that they had a degree. I went to school (a long time ago) with some guys who went to university in the old days, & at least two never actually worked in a capacity using their degrees, although one friend, who went to Cambridge & did an English with History degree, spent years working as an admin guy in a utility rail ticket office, although he finally moved into teaching around 20 years later!!! I was talking to a plumber a while back & he was saying he & other artisans just can’t recruit youngsters for this very reason they all want to go to university instead of training for a very useful & in the case of plumbing, very profitable career, & I’ve never met a poor bricklayer or carpenter or plumber!!!
An anti-fracking website had this very scary information:
A moratorium on fracking in England, imposed in November 2019, remains in force. The Preston New Road site has been largely mothballed since fracking caused a 2.9ML earthquake in August 2019.
Richter Scale 2.9: Felt slightly by some people. No damage to buildings.
They’re just envious, as neither they nor their partners have ever felt the earth move in their entire lives
There were also two small earthquakes in 2011 near Blackpool on 1st April (2.3 magnitude) and on 27th May (1.5 magnitude)
The New Scientist ran an article In November 2011 following an investigation by the British Geological Survey which found that the second quake was at a depth of 2kms and likely involved a fault of about 100 x 100 metres where the rocks moved by about a centimetre!
The geological survey have also stated that, because of the geology of the area, earthquakes will not exceed 3.0. There have never been earthquakes higher than that with the epicentre in that particular area.
It largely depends on where the frac water disposal goes. If regulators send it to earthquake swarm prone fault zones like some did in the U.S., it will not go that well. So check for regulator competency as a risk alongside other factors.
Watched a Dsicovery show on Coney Island Rubbish disposal (New York – Absolutely Yuk!). That’s where we need the demonstrators, No nice green grass to demonstrate on there. Meanwhile history repeats as Biden like governments force power cost rises just be we enter global cooling!
In my experience, the issues with fracking occurred largely due to poor drilling techniques & practices, but not the fracking itself. In the UK one of the major objectors to fracking is the renewable energy sector covering the arses/income source, taxpayers’ money is very useful to them indeed, it’s what makes renewables profitable!!!
Don’t wish to frighten the alarmistas, but Britain has hundreds if not thousands of tremors every year, they are just so small nobody feels them, only highly sensitive detection equipment record them!!! I dare say every part of planet Earth has them too, it’s only the biggies that grab the attention!!!
The Biased Brainwashing Cult …
When do the gas rates reset in the UK and come face to face with markets?
And then again in the Autumn
Sounds like proponents of the climate emergency are not just wrong, they’re evil.
Certainly true of hasbeen!
The Hunger Games continues with suppression of the outer districts.
Just for the record, the term in the field is fraccing or hydraulic fracturing. The word “frack” was invented by the glue heads that have gone organic because it begins with “f” and ends with “k” like another verb they use often.
Hydraulic fracturing has been practiced on oil wells for at least 80 years. I would think that’s enough track record to have isolated and corrected any problems it might have caused, if there were any.
Just one more of “Putin’s Puppies”
The only things I watch from the Big Brother Corporation is reruns of ‘ello ‘ello and Red Dwarf both highly politically incorrect which makes them highly funny. Oh and I listen to the unedited version of The Goons with all the social, racial, body type and other jokes left in. They don’t pick on one target but hit everyone showing that prejudice is to be mocked not embraced like today where it’s used as the reason you can’t succeed.
Here’s something for current events.
The censorship & suppression is all part of Orwellian manipulation & control of society at large, the favoured tool being Feminist Political Correctness informing us that one cannot say this or that because somebodies feelings might be hurt. Can’t speak for anywhere else but the UK has created over time a veritable class of professional offence takers, quietly (or not so) seeking for some financial compensation for their hurt feelings, but I suspect primarily it is to bring the people of the UK under a level of control in how they think, one step away from telling us what to watch, & read!!! I also listen to old radio shows by the “Goons”, & that other great “Round the Horn” with Kenneth Horn, the king of the double-entendre, probably be banned today!!!
The BBC and the Grauniad deal almost exclusively in fake news these days. Real news has to be put through the ‘converter‘ first before it is fit for purpose.
Wasn’t there a time when teaching posts would only be advertised in the Grauniad? Some people can be very strange, not sure if I have said this before, but a few years back a well known college, now a university, in the South-West UK, its architects’ department only tolerated its membership if they only had friends who were other architects otherwise their minds could be corrupted into a more broad-minded attitude – not the done thing at all!!!
I note that the most conspicuous demonstrators are kids, kids that have had several years of leftist brainwashing by largely illiterate teachers all of whom belong to an “education” union which has more friends in the CCP and Russia than in mainstream society. Always the one question. Who benefits? Always the same answer. The CCP or Russia.
The anti-fracking movement in the UK is known to be financed by Russia.
I don’t know if this is the problem, but perhaps the BBC writer has heard of “well shooting”, and the use of downhole “guns” for perforating rock formations. These have been established techniques beginning as early as 1866, when Col. Edward Roberts patented his “torpedo”, an explosive device for stimulating artesian well production. In 1884, Roberts’ company became the Otto Cupler Torpedo Company in Titusville, PA. Otto Cupler manufactured nitroglycerine, used it to fill 10 pint (IIRC) tin cans, which were then dropped down boreholes, detonating at the bottom, and fracturing the surrounding rock. They continued this practice, with interruptions due to blown up nitroglycerin plants (and well shooters), until 1990. Last time I visited them, they were manufacturing solid propellant sticks to provide pressurized gas downhole; the propellant is very much like solid rocket propellant, and made by the same methods.
Downhole perforating guns are steel pipes carrying an array of shaped charges, directed radially outward. When detonated, these penetrate several meters of rock, forming channels through which oil or gas can flow. Additional fracturing is provided by hydraulic fluid pumped down the borehole, and placed under high pressure.
So, yes, there is a history of explosives used in well frac’ing, and it continues today with perf guns. But the latter are much more controlled than Otto Cupler’s nitroglycerine torpedos. And the hydraulic part of frac’ing doesn’t involve any kind of explosions.
People like Harrabin will never admit they are wrong about nan made climate change. It’s that simple. They have to keep pushing the existential, alarmist end of world narrative which is clearly a lie.
To this end they have to lie about any source of energy that is not wind or solar.
The reality is that fracking is an innovative engineering process that recovers gas from deep strata rocks and is perfectly safe and should be viewed as a resource that has been gifted to mankind by nature.
