Climate change, a central part of Biden’s agenda, was barely mentioned in the State of the Union. And Europe is confronting its heavy reliance on Russian gas.

War and politics are complicating the efforts of the two biggest polluters in history — the United States and Europe — to slow down global warming, just as scientists warn of intensifying hazards.
On Tuesday evening, President Biden barely made a mention of his climate goals in the State of the Union speech despite promises to make climate an issue that drives his presidency. European politicians have their own problem: They are struggling to get out from under one of the Kremlin’s most powerful economic weapons — its fossil fuel exports, which Europe relies on for heat and electricity.
Oil and gas prices are soaring globally. That is a boon to those who extract and sell the very products that drive fatal heat waves, wildfires and sea level rise. And it is leading to new demands for increased drilling in the United States, already one of the world’s biggest producers of oil and gas.

Of course, Biden hasn’t given up on the green revolution. The NYT article goes on to reassure readers significant green handouts are still proceeding. It is just President Biden doesn’t want to talk about it so much anymore.
As I’ve said before, the main political obstacle to the green revolution is that it does not work. The careers of math challenged politicians who believe the green hype are always destroyed by rising energy prices and fed up voters. Even undemocratic countries like China face this problem – Xi Jinping is facing a huge backlash in China for his green incompetence, which could yet end his reign.
Given green failure is inevitable, why bother writing about it?
My motivation is hope of reducing the depth of each successive failure, just a little, by piercing the smoke screen, and broadcasting to people an explanation of why their lives just turned to sh*t, and what they can do about it.
Each successive failure – Carter, Obama, Biden – does tremendous long term harm to the national economy and the lives of ordinary people. Anything we can do to minimise that suffering, including our own suffering, has to be worth it.
Worse, recovery from each successive green failure is not absolutely guaranteed. So far the USA has always bounced back, and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future, but so did the British Empire, and before that the Spanish Empire. Until one day they didn’t.
History teaches that societal collapses are like stock market crashes. Always easier to see with hindsight.
I like civilisation, the medicines which keep me alive and healthy, the comfort of having a refrigerator full of food, and easy mechanised transport so I don’t have to walk everywhere. I have no wish to see all that come to an abrupt end.
We have no way of knowing what is the breaking strain, of the American and other Western economies, political systems and societies. But politicians like President Biden seem utterly determined to find that breaking limit and breach it, with their dogged pursuit of green economic insanity and heavy handed government economic interventions. It is up to all of us to try to spread the word of what is happening, to help gather enough political support to put a stop to this madness at the ballot box, before it is too late.
Midterms are on the horizon. Nuff said.
Heard through the grapevine that 30 some odd Democrat Senators will be retiring at the Mid Terms and their seats up for grabs. Conservatives need to make the blue zones of those states wake up and realize the potential mistakes being made. Perhaps we could turn 9 – 10 of those seats, and the 2 vacant seats into Red seats and wrest control of the Senate from the Lunatic Fringe infecting the Left side of the House

Yep, after they found that their population of military aged males was being effected and they figured out that massive population is not a liability but a valuable natural resource that can be exploited for making the state wealthy.

A lack of military age males may have been one problem. An even bigger cultural one would be a lot of aborted females to ensure that the single child, a son, could carry on the family line. Doesn’t exactly make for social harmony a couple of decades down the road.
The bigger effect is on the lack of females for those military aged males to mate with. The one child policy resulting in the favoring of that one child being male (to the point that female children would be aborted, abandoned or adopted out of the country).

So, a 3% loss of receiving imports of Russian crude oil results in, what, about a 8.6% rise in US average prices for regular-grade gasoline in just the time from the start of the Soviet-Ukraine war (24 Feb 2022). Sounds about right, doesn’t it?
And this despite Uncle Joe’s promise to release stockpiles of oil out the US strategic reserves (plus other US “partners” also releasing oil out of their reserves to the international markets, or so Joe claims).
That’s called inflation – who wudda thunk.

So they MUST conserve on something else where they actually have more options, in order to continue putting gas in the vehicle to get to and from work, keep the residence above freezing temperature, and cook their meals, no matter how much it costs, until it costs more than they have. It makes my heart hurt to think about it.
If you look at the numbers we actually export about 5 times as much domestic crude as we important from Russia, that’s why our total imports exceed our crude production/consumption deficit.
Maybe someone told Brandon that the CO2 greenhouse effect is saturated. With 99.94% of the available 15 micron IR flux already absorbed, there’s no energy left to “trap”. Any warming from the wings is small and completely compensated for by increases in net outgoing IR flux by CO2 molecules.

Eric, what I’d like to see is distinctive stickers attached to all essential products that support modern life.
I was at the hospital recently for a day procedure, and while waiting in the prep area, I was looking around the theatre at all the equipment that relied on oil derivatives for its existence.
I realized what an impotent facility that would be without reliance on oil to bring about its effectiveness.
This reality would confront people if most of the medical and technical equipment was stickered with bright labels that said something like –
MADE FROM OIL – FROM THE EARTH FOR YOUR HEALTH
That OP without electricity for 24 hours would be a major hell hole.

A recurring theme of this newsletter is the left’s inability to perform longterm strategic planning. Their arguments, principles and policies can all reverse on a dime, depending on what’s needed to advance their immediate goal or win the next election and hang on to power. Out of curiosity I just looked up the 1980 results. Of that 49 electoral votes for Carter/Mondale, 12 from GA, Carter’s state, and 10 from MN, Mondale’s state. Carter won only seven states. Yes I do believe Biden should be worried.

Without an energy supply all you will be able to do is sit on your hands and watch in horror not only as Putin slaughters Ukrainians, but also as the West enters terminal economic and social decline, likely accompanied by widespread rioting.
If you want the world to be able to ignore Russian fuels the first job is to have some alternatives in place that can be relied on. Grab as much as we can while it’s still available, and before Chinese outlets are further developed. It’s not Russian exports in exchange for digital credit that empowers them. It’s the imports they need that are important to choke off. Meantime get drilling.

Bruce, I don’t see that there is any longer an ethical or moral conscience in the West. Else why is that (stalwart) ethicist, Pete Buttigieg suggesting we cease funding Russia’s war on Ukraine, and instead (further) fund Iran’s development of nuclear weapons? It’s not as if Iran is NOT the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. There is only a political awareness, and it’s neither conscience, nor conscious.

That same heater over 24 hours uses about 36kwh of electricity. About the same as the 33kwh in a gallon of gasoline. Both cost about $4 to $5 for the energy.
