Climate Pundits Shocked at President Biden’s Green Backtracking

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to the NYT, the State of the Union speech was a missed opportunity to focus attention on the link between Russia’s military power and Western fossil fuel dependency.

War Abroad and Politics at Home Push U.S. Climate Action Aside

Climate change, a central part of Biden’s agenda, was barely mentioned in the State of the Union. And Europe is confronting its heavy reliance on Russian gas.

By Somini Sengupta and Lisa FriedmanMarch 2, 2022

War and politics are complicating the efforts of the two biggest polluters in history — the United States and Europe — to slow down global warming, just as scientists warn of intensifying hazards.

On Tuesday evening, President Biden barely made a mention of his climate goals in the State of the Union speech despite promises to make climate an issue that drives his presidency. European politicians have their own problem: They are struggling to get out from under one of the Kremlin’s most powerful economic weapons — its fossil fuel exports, which Europe relies on for heat and electricity.

Oil and gas prices are soaring globally. That is a boon to those who extract and sell the very products that drive fatal heat waves, wildfires and sea level rise. And it is leading to new demands for increased drilling in the United States, already one of the world’s biggest producers of oil and gas.

Energy experts said that Mr. Biden missed an opportunity to connect the war in Ukraine to the need to more swiftly sever an economic reliance on fossil fuels. “The president did not articulate the long-term opportunity for the U.S. to lead the world in breaking free of the geopolitical nightmare that is oil dependency,” said Paul Bledsoe, a strategic adviser to the Progressive Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

Of course, Biden hasn’t given up on the green revolution. The NYT article goes on to reassure readers significant green handouts are still proceeding. It is just President Biden doesn’t want to talk about it so much anymore.

As I’ve said before, the main political obstacle to the green revolution is that it does not work. The careers of math challenged politicians who believe the green hype are always destroyed by rising energy prices and fed up voters. Even undemocratic countries like China face this problem – Xi Jinping is facing a huge backlash in China for his green incompetence, which could yet end his reign.

Given green failure is inevitable, why bother writing about it?

My motivation is hope of reducing the depth of each successive failure, just a little, by piercing the smoke screen, and broadcasting to people an explanation of why their lives just turned to sh*t, and what they can do about it.

Each successive failure – Carter, Obama, Biden – does tremendous long term harm to the national economy and the lives of ordinary people. Anything we can do to minimise that suffering, including our own suffering, has to be worth it.

Worse, recovery from each successive green failure is not absolutely guaranteed. So far the USA has always bounced back, and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future, but so did the British Empire, and before that the Spanish Empire. Until one day they didn’t.

History teaches that societal collapses are like stock market crashes. Always easier to see with hindsight.

I like civilisation, the medicines which keep me alive and healthy, the comfort of having a refrigerator full of food, and easy mechanised transport so I don’t have to walk everywhere. I have no wish to see all that come to an abrupt end.

We have no way of knowing what is the breaking strain, of the American and other Western economies, political systems and societies. But politicians like President Biden seem utterly determined to find that breaking limit and breach it, with their dogged pursuit of green economic insanity and heavy handed government economic interventions. It is up to all of us to try to spread the word of what is happening, to help gather enough political support to put a stop to this madness at the ballot box, before it is too late.

Heard through the grapevine that 30 some odd Democrat Senators will be retiring at the Mid Terms and their seats up for grabs. Conservatives need to make the blue zones of those states wake up and realize the potential mistakes being made. Perhaps we could turn 9 – 10 of those seats, and the 2 vacant seats into Red seats and wrest control of the Senate from the Lunatic Fringe infecting the Left side of the House

That is good but not good enough. Lots of so called Republicans are corrupt and invested in or consumed by the DC culture and the go along to get along.

Every time the Republicans get a majority we conservatives have expected them to hit back hard, roll back the madness, and expose some of the corruption in DC and every time we are disappointed.

I’m just as guilty of having wool pulled over my eyes as any. I met Mike Pence before he was governor and bought his line. Was convinced he was Tea Party material. How wrong I was.

A lack of military age males may have been one problem. An even bigger cultural one would be a lot of aborted females to ensure that the single child, a son, could carry on the family line. Doesn’t exactly make for social harmony a couple of decades down the road.

The bigger effect is on the lack of females for those military aged males to mate with. The one child policy resulting in the favoring of that one child being male (to the point that female children would be aborted, abandoned or adopted out of the country).

Ummmm . . . “In 2021, the US imported an average of 209,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil and 500,000 bpd of other petroleum products from Russia, according to the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) trade association. This represented three percent of US crude oil imports and one percent of the total crude oil processed by US refineries. By contrast, the US imported 61 percent of its crude oil from Canada, 10 percent from Mexico, and six percent from Saudi Arabia in the same year.”—source: https://ghextractives.com/how-much-oil-does-the-us-get-from-russia/ (my underlining emphasis added)

So, a 3% loss of receiving imports of Russian crude oil results in, what, about a 8.6% rise in US average prices for regular-grade gasoline in just the time from the start of the Soviet-Ukraine war (24 Feb 2022). Sounds about right, doesn’t it?

And this despite Uncle Joe’s promise to release stockpiles of oil out the US strategic reserves (plus other US “partners” also releasing oil out of their reserves to the international markets, or so Joe claims).

That’s called inflation – who wudda thunk.
Sure , blame it on Ukraine and Russia , but it started before.
FED liquidity pumping since 2019 is now unleashing inflation – ask the average household about food and energy.
Russia , China, India will not tolerate being looted to ‘save the transatlantic’ – so witness full scale financial warfare, in other word, war, unleashed.

Liquidity pumping has been going on since the Obama years. They called it quantitative easing.

The last hurrah of 2 trillion passed by the Dems this spring, totally unnecessary, is directly responsible for much of the last 10 months of inflation up until the Russian invasion. The loss of FF independence is wholly on Brandon. Directly traceable to HIS executive actions. And now he is going to start buying Iranian oil. What a Putz.

That’s because the demand-curve on energy is, in the short term, inelastic, since people still need to get to work, cook their meals and avoid freezing in the dark. So they MUST conserve on something else where they actually have more options, in order to continue putting gas in the vehicle to get to and from work, keep the residence above freezing temperature, and cook their meals, no matter how much it costs, until it costs more than they have. It makes my heart hurt to think about it.

If you look at the numbers we actually export about 5 times as much domestic crude as we important from Russia, that’s why our total imports exceed our crude production/consumption deficit.

Maybe someone told Brandon that the CO2 greenhouse effect is saturated. With 99.94% of the available 15 micron IR flux already absorbed, there’s no energy left to “trap”. Any warming from the wings is small and completely compensated for by increases in net outgoing IR flux by CO2 molecules.

I was at the hospital recently for a day procedure, and while waiting in the prep area, I was looking around the theatre at all the equipment that relied on oil derivatives for its existence.

I realized what an impotent facility that would be without reliance on oil to bring about its effectiveness.

This reality would confront people if most of the medical and technical equipment was stickered with bright labels that said something like –

A recurring theme of this newsletter is the left’s inability to perform longterm strategic planning. Their arguments, principles and policies can all reverse on a dime, depending on what’s needed to advance their immediate goal or win the next election and hang on to power. For instance, I’m suffering a little whiplash just from watching them pivot from deriding the Second Amendment and their “deer don’t wear Kevlar vests” cliché to cheering Ukraine handing out rifles to citizens to fight Russian tyranny.

But if you’d like to see a sterling example of obtuseness when it comes to longterm planning, watch them argue that restarting the pipeline projects Biden killed won’t reduce Russian oil imports because they won’t be finished for years; and instead we need to develop “green” energy sources that won’t be available for years.

Each successive failure – Carter, Obama, Biden – does tremendous long term harm to the national economy and the lives of ordinary people.

Inflation, which had stood at 5.2% in the month of Carter’s inauguration, hit an all-time high of 14.6% in April 1980. I expect this is pretty high on Biden’s list of worries:

Putin is calling sanctions a “declaration of war”, so we know it’s hurting him. We should hurt him even more, by taking away his oil and gas money. Funny thing, he hasn’t said boo yet about all the arms and supplies being sent in from the western border. Those are going to hurt for sure.

Well it’s been happening for 8 years? So it’s not something new – but never covered in MSM.

The CIA involvement was very real too.

There’s almost no justification for war, but to dismiss the history of that region is folly.

As always, the pawns get slaughtered whilst the Kings sit in their respective castles.

Make no mistake, Ukraine is now Putins.

Will Putin stop at gaining half of Ukraine, or does he want it all, clear to the border with Poland?

If the latter, then NATO is probably going to get involved as cross-border incidents will happen.

So how far will Putin push this?

If Putin pushes too far, then NATO will have no choice but to respond militarily. This will be a huge test for the appeaser, Joe Biden.

Putin’s threats of nuclear war are keeping NATO from helping Ukraine adequately.

Will NATO give Putin anything he wants because he threatens nuclear war? Where and when will NATO draw the line?

Isn’t engaging in nuclear war a form of suicide for Putin and Russia? Why would they want a nuclear war? I can understand why they would threaten a nuclear war, but they would have to be crazy to initiate a nuclear war. Is Putin crazy?

NATO should be asking themselves these questions, and should have some answers.

At some point, if Putin doesn’t stop voluntarily, then NATO is going to have to call Putin’s nuclear bluff.

According to Putin, NATO, by virtue of its sanctions has already declared war on Russia. Odd that he hasn’t mentioned anything yet about all the weaponry and supplies being shipped into Ukraine. Maybe he will.
Putin is a madman, along the lines of Hitler. For the sake of humanity, he needs to be taken out. Lindsey Graham was right about that, but got slammed for it by both Dems and Reps. Go figure.

Yes.

There seems to be as much corruption in Ukraine as wheat. It’s been reported that Zelensky has become a billionaire and even owns a $35 million mansion near Miami Beach. In any case, poor public servants are becoming rich all the time.

Without an energy supply all you will be able to do is sit on your hands and watch in horror not only as Putin slaughters Ukrainians, but also as the West enters terminal economic and social decline, likely accompanied by widespread rioting.

If you want the world to be able to ignore Russian fuels the first job is to have some alternatives in place that can be relied on. Grab as much as we can while it’s still available, and before Chinese outlets are further developed. It’s not Russian exports in exchange for digital credit that empowers them. It’s the imports they need that are important to choke off. Meantime get drilling.

Bruce, I don’t see that there is any longer an ethical or moral conscience in the West. Else why is that (stalwart) ethicist, Pete Buttigieg suggesting we cease funding Russia’s war on Ukraine, and instead (further) fund Iran’s development of nuclear weapons? It’s not as if Iran is NOT the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. There is only a political awareness, and it’s neither conscience, nor conscious.

Not surprising at all.

We have an education system that rewards logical analysis, and pretty much only that. As a result, educated people lose the ability to deal with context. link The result is the death of wisdom.

The explanation is that the brain’s left hemisphere is valorized and the right hemisphere is suppressed. We have known for a hundred years what happens to people whose right hemisphere is damaged. They display a disconnect from reality that closely mimics schizophrenia. They jump to conclusions and will not change their mind when presented with ironclad proof otherwise and they exhibit unwarranted confidence.

We can say that the left is literally not in their right minds.

For about $25 you can buy a 1500W space heater at your local discount store. It produces enough heat to keep a small room warm in winter.

That same heater over 24 hours uses about 36kwh of electricity. About the same as the 33kwh in a gallon of gasoline. Both cost about $4 to $5 for the energy.

But now consider a battery. A 36kwh lipo battery to run the heater for a day is at a minimum $10,000 and likely a lot more.

So how do you hope to power the world on electricity when battery costs are so far out of whack?

Fred … you obviously don’t understand modern economic theory. The problem isn’t that LiPo batteries are too expensive, it is that other power sources are vastly under-priced. Governments have the poser to fix that. That is what taxes are for.

Government will subsidize the battery. “Did you know that?” in mini-AOC voiceover.

See Doonman’s comment below…$800 battery, less $795 subsidy from the Federals. $795 cost of subsidy + 10% for The Big Guy = $875 government indebtedness, to be added to the $30 trillion we owe for what is currently on layaway.

And, voila, total cost of $25 + $5, and “renewables” cost less than, or about the same as fossil-fuel powered energy.

Manhattan Contrarian has run through a couple simulations of the cost of pan-American implementation of storage batteries required to facilitate the nonsensical “Our state will be net-zero by 2030” pronouncements politicians have made recently, (“Because I said so,” is of course the total thought and science behind those pronouncements.) and at least one of them was re-posted on WUWT. Well worth reading, see the link below.
