The city’s government has learned little from others that have inflicted huge electricity costs on their citizens

Shockingly, just to reduce emissions to supposedly stop climate change, the city of Ottawa, Canada is following the lead of Germany, Australia, and California that now have among the highest costs for electricity because of their decarbonization efforts.
Ottawa is prepared to bankrupt the city and risk the safety of its most vulnerable citizens to put their plans in place to achieve its “net-zero by 2050” target, regardless of its impact on the lifestyles of its citizens.
The City is totally in sync with the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investments that are all the rage on Wall Street these days. Political leaders like Al Gore, billionaires like Michael Bloomberg, and more than 180 CEOs signed the Business Roundtable corporate purpose statement supporting ESG goals to divest from all 3 fossil fuels of coal, natural gas, and crude oil, just to reduce emissions.
The domino effect of tinkering with the supply chain of fossil fuels is supply shortages and soaring prices for not only electricity, but for the thousands of products that support the entire medical industry, all branches of the military, airports, electronics, communications, merchant ships, container ships, and cruise liners, as well as asphalt for roads, and fertilizers to help feed the world.
What’s Ottawa’s motivation for encouraging deterioration of the oil infrastructure that is guaranteed to inflict irreparable harm to the supply chain of crude oil to refineries that manufacture oil products for the world’s infrastructures and it’s 8 billion people?
Who knows, but efforts to cease the use of crude oil would be the greatest threat to civilization, not climate change. It would result in billions of fatalities from disease, malnutrition, and weather-related deaths. Imagine the cold, misery, and loss of life under a scenario where cities attempt to generate 100 percent of their electricity from breezes and sunshine.
Indeed, the primary usage of crude oil is NOT for the generation of electricity, but to manufacture derivatives and fuels which are the ingredients of everything needed by our economies and lifestyles to exist and prosper. Energy realism requires that the legislators, policymakers, and media, most of whom demonstrate a pervasive ignorance about crude oil usage, start to understand the staggering scale of the decarbonization movement.
Europe’s obsession with breezes and sunshine has sent electricity prices rocketing. The average cost of electricity for delivery in the short term soared to record levels in 2021, rising over 200 per cent in Germany, France, Spain, and the UK, largely due to their excessive reliance on wind and solar power.
The electricity crunches in Germany, Australia, and California are straining budgets and has become one of the biggest political challenges to protect vulnerable citizens and mid-sized businesses from price increases, fueling (no pun intended) inflation just as governments contend with the spread of the omicron virus variant.
Skyrocketing costs of electricity due to the intermittent generation from breezes and sunshine inflict massive damage on the less fortunate as an unwanted regressive expense. In addition, “green want-to-be” governments like that of the City of Ottawa remain oblivious to United Nations warnings about the negative consequences of the demand for exotic minerals and metals for wind, solar, and EV batteries that includes worldwide ecological degradation and atrocious human rights abuses.
They also appear ignorant of the fact that at least 80 percent of humanity, or more than 6 billion people, are now living on less than $10 a day and billions have little to no access to electricity. They would love to have the fossil fuels that have so blessed our societies. Yet Canadian and American politicians are pursuing the most expensive ways to generate intermittent electricity from wind and solar power, while subsidizing the working poor to hide the real costs of their plans. Third-world governments cannot subsidize themselves out of a paper bag. Their poor must bear the brunt of any virtue signaling their governments might engage in.
No wonder India, China and other coal-dependent developing nations rejected developed countries’ attempts to commit them to phasing out “unabated” coal-fired power at the UN’s climate change meeting in Scotland. India’s Minister for Environment and Climate Bhupender Yadav put it well:
“How can anyone expect that developing countries can make promises about phasing out coal and fossil fuel subsidies when developing countries still have to deal with their development agendas and poverty eradication?”
Similarly, Chinese COP26 Delegate Li Zheng asserted,
“To demonize fossil fuel will only hurt ourselves.”
In addition, Asians and Africans, many of them children from the poorer and less healthy countries, are being enslaved and are dying in mines and factories to obtain the exotic minerals and metals required for the green energy technologies Ottawa politicians and other western leaders so favor. The 2-minute video from Planet of the Humans illustrates the “blood minerals” needed for EV batteries, solar panels, and wind turbines.
Renewables do have a role to play in our energy usage. But we need to consider what they can do and what they cannot. Science shows that wind and solar can generate electricity, albeit intermittently, but science also shows us that wind and solar CANNOT manufacture the oil derivatives that are the basis of thousands of products we now take for granted.
Depriving its citizens of the more than 6,000 products that were non-existent before 1900, made from the oil derivatives manufactured from crude oil, as so many politicians across the developed world are planning to do, is immoral as extreme shortages will result in fatalities from diseases, malnutrition, and weather-related deaths.
As the City of Ottawa pursues electrification of it grid from breezes and sunshine, and electrification of all of its vehicles, at any cost, it remains oblivious to the real world needs of its citizens. Huh? Global Warming has been kind to Ottawa, changing its very-very cold winter nights to merely very cold winter nights, and doing very little to its summer days. Virtue signalling, obviously trumps common sense, especially when coupled with ignorance of the climate of the past.
The low temperature forecast for Ottawa for tomorrow (January 26, 2022) is -27C/-17F. Even that dreaded 1.5C temperature increase won’t help.

If only that were true! The warm December of 2021 has been replaced by one of the coldest January’s. We have had a string of very very cold nights (below -25 C) with tonight forecast for -31. Fluctuation over the last 20 years I have lived here has been large, but there is no trend in overnight minima.
Looks like our northern neighbor, Canada, will cripple their economy and cause special hardship to the lower economic residents, and for naught. China will add far more CO2 to the atmosphere than Canada could possibly “remove” (not contribute?). Since China is enhancing atmospheric plant food, participating in the greening of the earth, they win twice. The last statistic I saw was that 80% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the southern USA border. You’d think they would welcome some more warmth so they could spread out a little.

The last liberal government in my province of Ontario waged an 8 year campaign to close 8 coal generating plants, spending a vast fortune to build wind and solar via subsidies, and the back up natural gas plants needed at a 1-1 ratio. Of course, China added 8 new coal plants within 2 months after they announced this campaign.

British Columbia approved a dozen LNG development sites but not a single one proceeded due to aboriginal Salmon fishing and land right legal claims financed by eco groups. Canada 0 LNG, while US became world’s largest exporter. The drilling industry was hobbled by tax rules brought in 2 months after Trudeau’s election that don’t allow exploration costs to be tax deductible that put all small explorers out of business and killed the drilling fund investments. So much damage can not be done without a plan…..

This is minor cooling, but the greater harm to humanity and the environment is caused by major cold diversions toward the equator of the polar vortex, dangerous events that occur during the current period of low solar activity, such as the cold of last February that killed some 700 people last year in the mid-west USA or the extreme cold that is hitting the Mediterranean counties now..
These cold localized events are typically accompanied by localized warm events nearby – the heat has to go somewhere.
The problem is that the cold kills people and crops, whereas the heat does much less damage.

The cost of my electricity per kwh is $0.0995. Last bill was $108. However, $30 was franchise and maintenance fees.
I used roughly 680 kwh last month. For a family of 4 in a 2,500 square foot house north of Denver.
How many kwh does the average German use? I doubt anywhere near as much.
Nevermind, I found it for you. Less than 3.2 kwh/day. Even if we rounded up to 100 kwh a month, their prices must be close to 6.5 times what I pay.
I’ll keep my methane based electrical generation.

I suspect its a mixture of house sizes and air conditioning. Northern Europe residential you really don’t need air con.
Ok, it is not Dallas, but plenty offices EU I know are unbearably hot in summer. Newer offices have no aircon, just some from the ’60’s, effectively banned.
Aircon consists of opening school and office windows in subzero because COVID.
I certainly didn’t use AC this past December, it was fricken cold.
The single biggest cost was the furnace and it’s blower. My wife was home a lot and she likes the house temps closer to 71 during the day when I let the fall to 65.
Well, Griff, I live in the midwest and pay about $80 per month. Maybe if you don’t include California in the averaging, things would look different.

Last I looked, Germans were paying some 40 cents/kWh. You would need to head for somewhere like Hawaii to come even close. Whatever you do though, don’t be visiting N. Dakota.

Electrification of vehicles in such a vast and cold country as Canada is surely madness?
An EV with heater, fans, headlights, wipers, entertainment all on, driving through extreme cold weather with several people and a load on board are only going to do a fraction of the mileage that will be claimed for it under perfect laboratory conditions.

How do you charge the EV’s. They can’t be charged if the battery is colder than about 30F to 40F, and you aren’t allowed to charge them in your garage because of fire danger.
EV needs 13 freezing hours to get 650 km with 3 charging stops and no heater
German car reporter bought a new VW e-Up car in Wolfsburg and drove the 650 km to Munich. But the weather was freezing and to get further on each charge Lisa Brack kept the heating off most of the time. She still needed three charging stops and took 13 hours to get home.

The report explicitly mentioned that it would be not possible to switch to fully electric cars in at least 50 years in Canada. Few months later transition to electric cars was approved by government. Unfortunately did not save the report, could not find it.

If you include hydro, I would agree that renewables do have a role. As far as wind and solar, their only role is to power places that are too remote to connect to the grid.

It’s failed in Ottawa in every sense of the word. At this time, the city is attempting to bring into service a subway system. The project is at least three years late and has been held up by severe technical and basic civil engineering problems. There is no credible estimate of what the system will cost when it’s finally fixed, and there’s no credible date at which it will be operational. It was started in 2013 and supposed to be finished in 2019.
The project has long since blown the entire budget and the Province is thinking about canceling some of its share of the project financing. Suppose Russia decided not to supply gas to Europe, due to:
1) Decades of “defensive” encroachments of NATO
2) US/UK instigated/encouraged color revolutions, etc., the latest ones in Belarus and Kazakhstan,
a Mercedes, or Audie, or Volkswagen, or anything else made in Europe, could suddenly become up to 50% more costly.
About 1903 additional LNG carrier loads would be required, with a carrier load assumed at 170,000 m3, equivalent to 76,500 metric ton.
In 2020, world LNG demand was 360 million metric ton, equivalent to 4,706 carrier loads.
The immediate increase in carrier loads would be (4706 + 1903)/4706 = 40.4%

That condition would be in place for about 10 years, because it would take that long to build up additional:
– Gas production capacity
– LNG production plants and sending ports
– LNG carriers; average capacity 170,000 cubic meter (compressed and cooled)
– LNG receiving ports and gasification plants
– Connections to existing onshore pipe systems, all while:
1) Inflation would be off-the-charts
2) Germany’s exports would drastically dwindle.
Germany is currently buying gas from Russia, under long-term contracts, at about $280 per 1000 cubic meter of gas, or $7.93/million Btu
Germany would be buying gas, for many years, at spot prices of at least $1500 per 1000 cubic meter, or $42.47/million Btu

As a Calgarian in Western Canada I am quite happy for Ottawa to lead by example. I hope they truly commit to this foolish exercise and stay on mission till everyone of those civic politicians is hungry and shivering in the dark. I am pretty sure the citizens they represent will reward them for their efforts in a highly appropriate manner.
By trying to limit the capital-intensive Western oil and gas companies and their exploration and development, all the ESG movement does it bring much happiness to OPEC and Russia.
Indeed Russia’s Putin is quite happy now that oil and his natural gas prices are high and thus are filling the Russian treasury with foreign currency so he can fund his military reconquest of Eastern Europe.
There is a solution to the variability of renewable energy. If, for example, solar energy is high at 3pm while there is little demand, but demand is high at 9pm when there is little solar energy, the length of the supply lines can be increased so that the solar energy arrives at the time that it is needed. For a 6-hour delay, a supply line only 0.4×10^10 miles long would do the trick. 0.4 doesn’t look like much at all, and you can ignore the rest of the formula because no poltician could ever understand it anyway. So, with a bit of wire and a few switches to provide different time delays, the solar panels could deliver energy whenever it is needed.
It’s simple, and it would work just as well as anything else that has been proposed.
Mike J., I note that when the New Horizons craft approached Pluto in December, 2014, it was taking about 4 1/2 hours for a signal from the spacecraft to reach Earth.
If only they had thought to have New Horizons trail an extension cord to be slung around several of the giant planets on route, they could have had a closed loop power cord that would store power just as you say.
Of course, this could be a big problem for eco-alarmists, introducing an artificial magnetic loop or ‘coil’ into the solar system like that. I mean, if you magnetically end up subtracting too much energy and momentum from, say, Jupiter’s motion, it could come crashing down onto the Earth, etc.
It is the inequality that is the problem. The easy solution to correct the inequality is to lower the income across the globe. Only unelected elite like those in the UN deserve and command higher incomes.
