Green Campaigner Exempts Herself From Her Own Climate Demand

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

British green campaigner Angela Terry has plumbed new depths of arrogant hypocrisy, by demanding a ban on home conservatories during a TV interview – while sitting in her own conservatory.

People in glass houses! Green campaigner lectures GMB viewers on damage that conservatories are doing to the planet – while sitting in her conservatory

  • Angela Terry has called for new conservatories to be banned while sitting in hers
  • The environmental scientist from Somerset said it was ‘having a no regret’ policy
  • But she seemed to exclude herself from the rules as she spoke from her own one
  • Presenter Susanna Reid pointed out the hypocrisy asking her why she keeps hers
  • Ms Terry suggested that because her house came with one already she was fine

A green campaigner has called for conservatories to be banned – while sitting in her own one.

Angela Terry said Britons need to dump the glass houses because they ‘act like a furnace’ for the rest of the home.

The environmental scientist, 47, claimed the move was about ‘having a no regret’ policy and protecting the planet.

But she appeared to exclude herself from the rules as she brazenly spoke from her conservatory in Wells, Somerset.

GMB presenter Susanna Reid pointed out the hypocrisy asking why she can have one but ‘nobody else is allowed one from now on’.

Ms Terry suggested because her house came with one she was exempt from new legislation.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. In essence this is no different to climate campaigners turning up to a climate conference in a private jet, and demanding ordinary people cut back on flying. But most of them have the sense not to flaunt their hypocricy right in the middle of a TV interview.

Is it okay if I tell her to stuff it where the sun don’t shine? I have other choice phrases.

If a conservatory is attached to a dwelling and adds heat to the home in winter, isn’t that a GOOD THING? Environmentally sound, as no fuel is used? Just askin’, because she comes off as a rather rancid BIMP.

Today was a lovely sunny day here in Southern England. Temperature outdoors around 6C 43F.

In our south facing conservatory 69F (20.5C) In our room next to it 65 f around 18c, in our north facing kitchen only 13C 55F. So our living rooms were made habitable without further heat by solar gain The heat drifted upstairs whilst the kitchen needed heat. A couple of days ago there was no sun and everywhere in the house was around 15C and it all needed heat

In the summer we close blinds and curtains to keep the excess heat out so the conservatory is definitely reducing heating and CO2 and arguably therefore ought be be subsidised. We could call it a transparent solar panel

I live in the Pacific Northwest, which at this time of year is mostly overcast. 90% of the windows on the house face South/Southwest, so when the sun is shining, it will burn is out. The largest window is about 5 feet high by 10 feet wide, the others are slightly smaller. When it’s overcast, we get nothing.

So yes, just like transparent solar panels.

Few seem to realize how long-standing is Angela Terry’s style of response to a lost confidence in rationality itself that drives her seemingly ad hoc lying hypocrisy. This ‘post-modern’ mindset has for over a century now settled instead for personal power wielding via conjured narratives, while feeling no conflict even in self-contradiction as no confident grounds is acknowledged for any truth! Does this explain more than a few instances of such story-telling substitutes for verifiable information that you’ve encountered recently?

Why no conservatories? Because they could create unwanted solar gain, that’s why.
link

Conservatories will soon need to show they don’t create ‘unwanted solar gain’

This is such a non-problem. Anyone who’s worked anywhere near a greenhouse knows there are a bunch of techniques to control heat, starting with ventilation. link Plus, at certain times of year, greenhouses can reduce your home heating bills.

Having said the above, conservatories can require a lot of heat. link That problem will decrease if the globe gets warmer.

So, Angela Terry isn’t just a hypocrite, she’s also clueless.

That’s the loony left modus operandi. Dream up BS then don’t apply any real world knowledge to test it. Then insist that anyone who disagrees with you is some kind of far-right nut case.

Well said. My conservatory – already here when I moved in – gets sun all day and at either end of the summer when the heating is off, opening the doors to the house can provide some nice warmth. By the same token, at other times the doors stay shut to keep out the cold or heat. the radiator in there was turned off as soon as I moved in as heating it would be very inefficient. But in time I intend to put a wood burning stove in as I have plenty of fire wood available.

Gerry, something that works well for heating glass or poorly insulated structures is infrared overhead heating. It will heat the surfaces and objects in the room without drawing air from the room for combustion.
Just a couple of LED chicken house brooding lamps might do the trick for a small area that’s largely air-tight.
Here we use overhead radiant in greenhouses powered by LP gas and exhausted into the growing room to raise humidity and CO2 concentration.

Why not just replace the current glass panes with what is called thermopane over here in the US of A? That’s windows with glass that consists of two VERY thing sheets of glass, with a vacuum between them, sealed shut. My living room has a big bay window that faces south and in the winter, the room is so heated up that the furnace won’t run.

I have the thermostat set at 73F. The indoor temp is 75F in the winter – WITHOUT the furnace running, thanks to this type of window. Saves a bodacious lot on the gas bill, too.

The only time I ever feel the cold when indoors is when someone’s spoiled rotten little black cat decides to try to pry the windows open and let in cooler air.

The UK Climate Change Committee is worried that people might overheat in their houses at some point in the future and so is recommending that all new conservatories should be built so as to reduce this risk eg, by having smaller and fewer windows.

It also suggests building the conservatory separated from the house (WHAT?) and having no internal heating of its own. In which case the conservatory could have larger windows.

These people are mad

How many super-hot days do we get compared to cool and cold days when the solar gain would be useful?
That said, a number of people have told me that an insulated roof and full length windows make a conservatory useful all year round.
Also if you want to reduce solar gain in the summer, have a 2ft overhang on 8ft windows. This will keep direct sunlight out of the conservatory in the hottest months, in the UK, and still give the benefit of solar gain in the colder months when the sun’s angle is lower.

The ‘logic’ seems to be that conservatories will contribute unwanted heat gain to the houses they’re attached to. link To know how stupid that is, check out Gerry’s comment above.

I once read a science fiction story about a world where women had taken over all the positions of power. That caused me to wonder whether that would lead to a kinder, gentler world. Nope. Just look at all the woke crappola with which we are increasingly infested.

We have the wise words of Vladimir Putin, as quoted by Jordan Peterson. He’s pointing out that what’s happening in the West is what happened in the Soviet Union. We all know how that worked out. The quote is rather long so I won’t include it all but I did enjoy this part:

In Hollywood, memos are distributed about proper storytelling and how many characters of what color or gender should be in a movie. This is even worse than the agitprop department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

another is the Broadway musical “Hamilton”. As described in Wikipedia: “Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda.” He has Puerto Rican ancestory. Now, I have no problem with “people of color”. In fact, I think that’s a raccist term. But, I’d prefer movies and theatre to be realistic- that characters should look like I think they looked. And yes, with Hamilton- it’s one big rap session. It’s been extremely popular but I wouldn’t pay to see it. I read a great biography of Alexander Hamilton not long ago. He was born in the Caribbean of British parents. He probably had a modified British accent.

No, you did not understand the core of the matter. It is not climate or global warming: it’s for your own good!

You see: if your house gets too hot, you may have an heat stroke! Because, she thinks, you are dumb enough not to open the windows and eventualy change place to a cooler spot.

So, to prevent you from inflicting self-damage, you will not be allowed to have a consrrvatory! You are not allowed to become ill! You are not allowed to put your life at risk!

That makes it rather a shame all those people died fighting two bloody world wars to preserve freedom & democracy against tyranny & dictatorship!!!

I think it should be ok as long as one purchases sufficient carbon offsets to cover it.

This really is True Madness coming from confirmed Puritans.

THE main requirement for UK houses is heating, NOT cooling and even in wintertime, glass houses capture (and haha Trap) heat.
Lord help us, how much Government money (and utility-company money enforced by Government) has been spent on home insulation?

This Climate Thing simply could not get any more stupid
(until tomorrow of course)

What is actually going on here is the machinations of ‘The Green Eyed Monster’
Simple as that yet they will *never* admit as much.

What do we think will become of a world entirely populated by liars?

So the greens are now complaining that gathering solar energy to warm your living space via a conservatory is an environmental problem? If the “furnace” complaint relates to excessive warmth in summer have they not heard of using blinds or opening windows to improve airflow?

She’s just virtue signaling. As a UK “environmental scientist” shs is expected by her social and professional circle to say all the correct climate nonsense talking points. It’s is the “Emperor’s New Clothes” self-deception nonsense in our modern era.

Conservatories reduce the amount of heating required, and thus, reduce greenhouse gasses. I thought that was meant to be a good thing- natural heating method and exactly what the greenies stand for.
If she so hates conservatories, perhaps she should remove her own one altogether to be a pioneer. Will other ultra greens follow the insane advice, like children being led on by the Pied Piper? Will some start to question the advice -wake up to green lunacy?
What would happen if radical greens ever took control of government???It would be like Mao’s little red book- some idea comes up in to his head. There is no debate on pros and cons (the cons would find themselves executed.) Mao (and the greens) are so totally certain of themselves-no need for debate-they are always right. Next thing, it becomes a full-on policy to be pursued with vigour, regardless of the harm it does to others.

They act like a furnace for the rest of the home? So what? very nice in winter. I have south facing patio doors & when the sun shines in winter (it sometimes does you know) it provides quite a bit of warmth to the room. A bit of a pain in summer, but they can be opened or the curtains drawn. I am planning on putting some of that plastic coated reflective foil that they use for survival bags on them in the summer.

Angela Terry said Britons need to dump the glass houses because they ‘act like a furnace’ for the rest of the home.

Isn’t that a good thing? Solar heating! It’s free! Less energy consumed during the heating season? When I grew up in England the heating season was about 10 months long, and in summer we opened the windows. When I lived in Scotland, I seem to recall the heating season being closer to 12 months. The estimable Ms Terry obviously needs a lesson in logic.

Or perhaps she needs a brain.

As you and many others have said, passive heating and cooling are A Good Thing[TM].
These have been the traditional ways of keeping indoor areas as pleasant as possible.

Indian verandahs transplanted to Australia to great benefit, and Mediterranean courtyards seem quite effective in Greece and Italy as well.

The term greenhouse gases will now be replaced by conservatory gases.

News flash for Ms Terry. The UK is as far north as Labrador, so conservatories have long been used as sun traps that extend the growing season and provide warmth in a generally dark, cold country. If only her conservatory could dispel some of the darkness between her ears
I couldn’t face listening to her bloviation but I note she lives, coddled by the Gulf Stream, in balmy Somerset, she should try living through a winter in Sunderland or Aberdeen before she casts her first reactionary stone. She probably still does not understand that her own personal green house effect is from the glass blocking convection not from the copious, cringeworthy, CO2 she is graciously expelling. Now that would be something to consider banning.

Yes, generally these rooms have windows that open so on the hottest days you just open them and let the heat out, it doesn’t have to heat the rest of the house.
The heat you purposely trap with them on cooler days reduces the Mount of fuel you burn to heat the house, plus these rooms allow extended growing season to allow you to grow food for yourself.
These room are a climate win for such as her and she’s too stupid to see it

Never mind the hypocrasy, just look at the reason given that the conservatory ‘acts like a furnace for the rest of the house’. What on Earth does that mean? This ‘environment scientist’ is obvious clueless and has lost the plot completely.

Vincent Causey
January 22, 2022 1:14 am

It doesn’t even make sense. Isn’t climate change policy supposed to mandate houses that retain heat better? A conservatory does help to do that. If it get’s too hot in the summer (for south facing conservatories), most people don’t go in them. Or they fit sun blinds.

Chris Wright

I guess we still haven’t reached peak lunacy.
I just realised, I have a conservatory, so I’m even more doomed than I thought.
But, just a minute, a thought occurred. Maybe – and this is purely theoretical, just a shot in the dark – maybe I could – I don’t know – sort of – sort of shut the connecting door.
Yes, it could really work!
Thank God, the planet is saved once again!
