How can 80% of a species be extinct?
I do not think that word means what they think it means.
Consider that 99.999% of all species which have inhabited the earth have gone extinct. Any one species only exists for a maximum of around a million years.
When a species goes extinct, its rarely the massive kill-off of a meteor event. Its typically clam species A was suffering parasitism from some nematode species X, however within clam species A a more successful variant, member became subspecies A
which was resistant to nematode. Subspecies Ahad a reproduction efficacy of 1.001, where as species A had a reproduction efficacy of 0.99 Thus over several thousand years, species A went extinct, subspecies Abecame the dominant species of clam in that environment. Of course one member of the species nematode X evolved to be a more successful parasite X, and so on and so on for about 541 million years.But every damn plant and animal which has ever lived is playing this same game. You, Me, the ostriches and oysters and every creeping thing which creepeth across the earth, swims in the seas, or slithers through the mud.
We all live our lives, and perish. We all have a slightly different genetics from our parents. The world’s major deserts are not man made. It is lack of rainfall primarily due to the latitude of the area. The Sahara for instance was once green and likely will be green again one day when a long term cycle of the earth’s orbit changes to bring rain.

I would like to thank Leonardo di Caprio for his contribution to the wellbeing of the planet. With his resources, he is able to fly frequently by private jet, thus producing far more CO2 than most other people could even dream of. The results are impressive and well documented: increased greening of the planet, record high global food production, decreased excess winter deaths, decreased energy needs for winter heating, and many other benefits. I feel that it would be very helpful if L di C could generate more publicity for his massive public-spirited ‘carbon footprint’ and encourage others to follow suit to the best of their ability. Even those of us without access to private jets can contribute something, and together we can make a real improvement to the planet.

My family found the latest de Caprio movie to be quite entertaining as a parody of current events. Faced with what might be a serious threat to civilization, you can trust the politicians to be as effective as they have been in “solving” the COVID and CAGW “crises”. And the “science experts” with their “mining robots” were every bit as successful as the bird choppers and sun catchers on the one hand and the masks and jabs on the other. By the end of the movie, the audience should be convinced that we really deserve what’s coming.

Leo’s problem was typical in Hollywood.
He got very rich and famous at a very young age, and was quickly seduced by the typical Hollywood out-of-control spoiled brat thing. (It gets so bad, that his party boy “p***y posse” image even becomes a running gag in Doonesbury) While he thinks he’s cool and it might appeal to his adolescent fan base, it’s shallow and cringe worthy to any adult.
Then one day he wakes up and realizes that the p***y posse image is incredibly shallow and silly, and can’t go on forever. If he want’s to have any viable future in Hollywood and be taken seriously as an actor and adult, he’s gotta do something to erase, or at least overshadow this.
So he figures out (or is coached by someone smarter) that he needs a “cause” so he can look “deep”, “intellectual”, and “concerned” like he thinks real adults are. (Or such as they are in superficial Hollywood) Since he’s in the “popularity” business, whatever cause he picks has to be Progressive, since Progressive causes are superficially popular, easy, and demand little in terms of intellect, personal responsibility or personal sacrifice, which he has little taste for or concept of.
Typical Hollywood cause favorites over the last 40 years or so like no nukes, the homeless, family farmers, war, or starving women and children in Africa have been done to death. Besides, homeless people are smelly and scary, and the party scene in Africa really sucks. But by the late ’90s, “global warming” is fresh and big. And it allows people with absolutely zero intellectual or moral credibility to garner instant superiority as long as you buy plenty of the newly invented “carbon credits” to green-wash your conspicuous consumption lifestyle sins away.
So he makes friends with a pliant Al Gore who will hang with anyone cooler than he is, which is pretty much anybody. He uses some of his money and Hollywood clout to make a bunch of eco-propaganda films that are critically acclaimed but nobody ever actually sits through. DeCaprio is a prime example of elite wokeism. Don’t pay attention to the yacht or private jet that I travel around in (Al the “Bore” Gore is famous for that). Just pay attention to the artificial story line I’ve given you to march through the streets with. And in the meantime, they are making money hand over fist!
They always give themselves enough of a time frame for people to fuss over and by the time the dreaded end of the world date passes, they jinn up another 9 or 10 years to noisily kick the can down the road with and show just how woke and virtue signaling they are.

When pretty people become successful in the performance arts, folks think they’re experts in fields they know nothing about.
Why is that?
Some folks will believe anything you tell them, especially if you have lots of money.
For once I’d like to hear from one of these silly goons exactly what action they imagine being specifically done by government and private businesses that would then avert the 9 year calamity. Or truly do anything at all about climate, weather, fires or floods.
“Addressing” or “fighting” climate change is a fools errand if there is no plan of action that adds up to impacting.
So what if you address or fight? If your action (crusade) doesn’t alter anything it doesn’t count as doing anything about the climate at all. No matter how lofty the intention or desire.
DiCaprio’s call for action is stale stuff. Devoid of anything meaningful while pretending to be filling the fantasy of doing nothing is not an option.
As with anything, having some policy or program that is supposed to promote or encourage other behaviors has no value if there is no altered behavior attained.
If any action can be shown to be useless then doing nothing is certainly an option.
Ya don’t just do stuff cuz it makes you feel like you did something.
Politicians do it all the time. They must be seen to be doing something. Otherwise, why pay them?

The movie “Don’t Look Up” would have been more enjoyable if it wasn’t an obvious allegory to his pet Climate Change project.

What does he mean by ‘nine years to stop climate change’? Does he mean that we don’t need to do anything till 2031? Does he mean that there must be no more changes to the climate after 2031? Does he mean that he, himself, must do something different in 2031? What does this magical deadline actually mean?
