The German Tagesschau reports that the 14-29 age goup don’t take the Fridays-For-Future protests as seriously as journalists thought.
Afraid, but unwilling
A study by Simon Schnetzer and Klaus Hurrelmann called Jugend in Deutschland (Youth in Germany) reveals some unsurprising attitudes of the generation under 30. The young people are most afraid – at least as expressed to the respondents – of climate change and poverty pensions. This is nothing new: A doomsday mood has been already widespread since decades: explosive nuclear power plants, nuclear war, forest dieback – and the coming ice age caused by industrial emissions. But there was no real deep belief because most of the future Greens enjoyed their privileges and made a real career and cash.
Policymakers should eliminate the problems
That the majority of young people believe in the man-made ice age is not surprising, but what apparently surprised the authors of the study is the attitude of the under-30s that policymakers should eliminate the problems, and that the youths themselves are not very willing to make sacrifices for climate protection. Only a minority are willing muster the strength to face up to the great challenge and actively change their own lifestyle, although they themselves are strongly in favor of doing so. The vast majority are not yet ready to give up their cherished habits in the areas of consumption, mobility and nutrition and are waiting for politicians to help them make decisions.“
Love of travel
Specifically: 60% of the respondents regularly travel by car, whereby it should be noted that those under 18 were also asked. Only 19% and 27% respectively are “still” prepared to do without cars or air travel in the long term. I would question the “still”, since it is precisely the children of the upper income half who cultivate an anti-national cosmopolitan attitude, which is expressed in extensive air travel.
One example is the young photographer from the FFF report on ARD – we reported. The team of reporters stood with him in his room and filmed the world map behind him, which was partly peppered with photographs that the young man had probably taken himself. At the end of the film, he also said without any shyness that he would no longer demonstrate with FFF, but would start a world tour.
“Lazy children”…prerequisite for totalitarian, planned economic policies
Co-study director Hurrelmann noted something highly interesting:
The biggest obstacle to change is the comfort zone of the welfare state, in which the younger generation have comfortably settled after the example of their parents.“
He also writes that the lazy children of affluence can only be moved by “clear rules and guidelines through politics”, in other words: dictatorship. His diagnosis is correct: the welfare state, which takes care of everything, has turned the youngest into narcissistic, dependent citizens – the perfect prerequisite for totalitarian, planned economic policies.
It is doubtful that the green state will actually condemn its elitist fans to harsh cuts. On the one hand, Corona politics has also made life hell for many leftist academics. On the other hand, Annalena Baerbock once condemned the plans of a Green member of the Bundestag who wanted to allocate a flight quota to every German citizen. This would not affect the average worker, but it would affect the cosmopolitan children who are not as rich as millionaire’s daughter Luisa Neubauer. In fact, many of the respondents probably expect “the others”, i.e. the working low-income earners, to fulfil their wishes.
The only thing the respondents already do voluntarily is eat and drink vegetarian, vegan or flexitarian food, 44%! That is already a self-restraint that is something to be proud of. In addition, besides the 56% who are worried about climate, 48% and 46% respectively are worried about the collapse of the pension system and the consequences of inflation. This is astonishingly realistic, although the quantity media say little about it. No wonder, their milieu is causing the problems by redistributing wealth away from care homes to the NGOs and mansions.
What do respondents expect from the future socialist-green-liberal government? 59% to secure the pension systems (working people?), 54% a climate-friendly future (elitists?), 49% want the digitalization of the education system – presumably a consequence of the Corona policy.
Less than 20% fear COVID
Speaking of which, what about the consequences of the botched Corona protection measures? 40% of the respondents are still mentally distressed, and almost 70% are transfused/vaccinated – with less than 20% fearing Sars2 infection.
One fifth were vaccine refusers or critics, which corresponds quite closely to the rate of nonconformists that has been found time and again (for example, Asch’s experiment on obedience).
Who actually conducted the study? Chief advisor Prof. Hurrelmann belongs to the Hertie School, Respondi AG conducted the on-site interviews, and the statistics were compiled by the Allensbach Institute.
I’ve known for some time the success of the watermelons has seen their converts simply believe it’s a matter of Big Gummint and Big Biz fixing the problem at no cost to them. That’s because solar and wind are free from Gaia aren’t they? That will even run their automobiles for free too. Just jump aboard the Green gravy train.

This is a feature in tech companies nowadays. They clearly need more Dave Chappelles.
The young have been really messed up. That in itself will take a very long time to put right if it ever can be; they’ve just started teaching the concept of white supremacy to nursery age children, ie 1 or 2 to 4 or 5 years old. I would imagine it isn’t so different in Germany.
But it is always the assumption that Government should fix it, so, here too, the Government should fix it. The first step would be to get the Government (which runs the schools) to get rid of the revisionism and go back to teaching reading, writing and ‘rithmatic. And civics, if they can find any teachers who can teach it neutrally.
I hope their resignations have been accepted.

Wisdom should not only grace those with some length of life experience for their own good, but also to benefit their vulnerably naive descendants.
The new euphemism for tyranny and despotism seems to be “politicians helping [people] make decisions.” Judging from the politicians’ actions—for example with Kung Flu— “helping” includes fines, arrests, public shaming, loss of livelihood, beatings, and forced quarantine (read Australian gulags). What’s next? Firing squads?

There are actually people seriously suggesting #xecuting people who refuse the vaccine. So far nobody significant, but that people are even thinking it is pretty scary.

I asked a supporter of Extinction Rebellion if she had given up using fossil fuels. In reply she said she did not need to stop using fossil fuels until everybody else had done so. “My personal usage is irrelevant because this requires all of humanity to stop, not just one person.”

That’s my official position, too. There is no point in the US curtailing it’s fossil fuel use unless the big emitters do as well. That’s good public policy.
And it’s bad personal policy. Too bad our leaders have things backward. If they want less fossil fuel usage, they need to make personal examples. Our ruling class want others to make the sacrifices.
If they want fossil fuel reductions they need to stop propping up the alternatives.
Governments basically pay people to use solar and if they keep doing that then solar will never be forced to streamline their processes enough to reduce their costs AND to prove it can work as a valid supply under a maximised range of conditions.
If you don’t then it is just welfare. Sure there is a time and place for welfare, but when welfare comes more attractive in a cost analysis than working for your living, then people tend to (spoiler) not work.
Being honest here – if welfare allowed me to do all my hobbies and still pay rent, I wouldn’t get a Day Job. I work partly for the job satisfaction and sense of worth, but mainly for the large amounts of $$$.
I’d make it more personal: You are right, compared to China what you do in the US in terms of consumption makes no measurable difference. Are you prepared to be drafted to go to war with China to make real change?

Boy, ain’t that just how these things work? One way to eliminate wealth disparity is to help the poor move up into the middle class. The other way is to bring down those with more. The left doesn’t know how to improve anything and only knows how to destroy.

These two statements associate expected cooling as man-made, the first time I’ve seen this description. I think they are accepting a cold period ahead but are gaslighting as usual about the cause. Let’s see how far they take this false ‘man-made ice age’ propaganda line.
We are currently in a solar cooling mode for the next year or so, to be interrupted again by solar warming, as it did during the last solar cycle.

Once people have swallowed the lie that humans are noticeably affecting the world’s weather, it doesn’t much matter if you call it warming or cooling. There’s an inexhaustible supply of bad weather and plenty of authoritarian bureaucrats to draw it to our attention.

Over fifty years ago I discovered how stupid university students could be. This was when we still had to get information by reading books and get our news from newspapers and the radio.
Today’s students have a treasure trove of information literally at their fingertips but their ability to read with understanding and their critical abilities are dismal. If pupils have not learnt to think deeply and reason carefully by the time they complete their schooling, they should not be admitted to university. Such people are unable to find solutions by working from first principles and far too dependent on parrot learning.
All this indicates why students are the wrong people to tell governments what to do and to tell educators what to teach. They need to work hard to complete a degree that leads to beneficial work – no Mickey Mouse degrees. Once they have done this and spent some years working productively in the real world, they will be able to give their government good advice. Hopefully, they will also have voted for politicians who are wise enough to recognize and accept good advice.
One of the myths of modern society is that Higher Education is this grand and moral thing that shares out it’s collection of wisdom in a sage like manner, probably while dressed as Dumbledore.
Nope.
It is a business.
They are not there to provide society what it needs. They are there to provide fee paying students (or student loan paying students) with whatever they are willing to sign up to study for.
There is a level of feedback driving the process. Students need to show interest or courses will not be created to be offered in the first place, but the vast majority of these hobby degrees exist purely to fill up wallet shaped hole in the future student’s life. Industry is not driving the need for generations skilled in the application of Intersectional Baskets or whatever they study now days, it is the generation of people who are never going to be part of the economy in the first place.
Universities offer and the masses apply.
And then, instead of being a blinding shining light of an expert ready to change the world – even with a real STEM based degree – you are just someone with 4 years of book learning based on what may already be obsolete industry practices. You are likely to be working with people with 20+ years hands on experience who have been following (or in some cases setting) the current industry trends.
This is how higher education works. Or more correctly doesn’t work. It’s main function is to keep the unemployable youths out of the already crowded job market for a few more years.
In our current times the correct response to some bright eyed 20 something telling you they have a university degree is “Sorry”.
In today’s NPR report ( https://www.npr.org/2021/12/08/1062130622/germany-new-chancellor-olaf-scholz-coalition-government ) Rob Schmitz somehow (and I don’t know how short of willful ignorance) managed to COMPLETELY miss the elephant in the room.
Olaf Scholz’ biggest challenge is going to be how to keep the lights from going out in Germany.
Germany’s INSANE energy policies (arising from the INSANE belief in the evidence-light “Catastrophic/dangerous, CO2-driven anthropogenic global warming/climate change” CONJECTURE) have already resulted in skyrocketing prices for natural gas and a steep rise in coal-fired electricity generation.
NPR has, of course, intentionally and deliberately, failed to report the skyrocketing prices of both electricity and natural gas in Europe and Asia.
Why does LNG cost 5× more in Europe and Asia than it does in the U.S. ?????

Have you SEEN the price of meat lately? They didn’t say they didn’t WANT to eat meat, they probably just can’t afford to!
This is at the core of American liberalism too. There is this idea among liberals that the very idea of government is to have a group of powerful people to take care of all of your needs. The American liberal wants all of their basic needs “provided” to them. Education, health care, housing, food, and so on. When these leaders fail to provide everything adequately, the solution is never to provide for oneself. The solution is to simply replace the politician and maybe this time, they’ll get everything they want “provided” to them. It is why Americans in liberal cities keep voting for democrats no matter how many people end up living in the streets and plagued by crime. They don’t see any fault in the concept of a government taking care of the people, the fault always lies with the particular politician. “I elected you to do things for me so I don’t have to do anything myself!”

I told a politician knocking at my door looking for votes that I would support someone who promoted individual responsibility, smaller government, wise budgeting and paying back debt etc but these are as rare as four leaved clover. Yes, caught that as well. Also, long wave radiation and/or “Heat” is not “trapped” in the atmosphere – this is a silly claim although often made. Some of if is absorbed, the resulting energy can be transferred to other molecules, and some of the absorbed energy is re-emitted as long wave in a random direction. No where in this process is it ever trapped.
Hot air in a real greenhouse is “trapped”. So the greenhouse effect is just a silly analogy.
The American Almost Revolution 1968, the draft ends1974 by1980 the revolutionaries became corporate raiders and Reagan Libertarians but some remain loyal to the cause while making a living on federal subsidized or government paid jobs. Those young folks show excellent sense, in my estimation. Fact is that their mature, adult, political masters can easily “do something to fix the problem”.
That, basically, is to doing nothing at all – except stop throwing money to the wind (excuse my pun), i.e. ignore all IPCC doomsday prophesies and immediately invest hugely in new, coal fired and nuclear fired power plants. And when those terrible, scary climate change disasters are actually upon us (e.g. rising sea levels), adapt sensibly to them one way or the other – as the Dutch did it for hundreds of years. The terrible extreme weather events, of course, should just be treated the way we always did it – humankind are used to that.
Alas, I am 86 – so would look absolutely out of place among those German youths – but I feel like joining them! Of course guv’ments should do something.
