Help, what is happening with our universities?

By Prof. Dr. IR. Guus Berkhout

This is an English translation of a letter by Guus Berkhout of CLINTEL that was published in De Telegraaf, the largest newspaper in The Netherlands earlier this week.

In recent years we have seen the strangest things happening to our universities. Professors must be extremely careful about what they teach. If they present scientific results that do not fit the ideology of activist movements, their lives are made difficult and they even run the risk of being excommunicated. Joining the consensus is by far the safest. The Boards of Governors do not protect their professors; on the contrary, they are solidly behind the activists.

The University of Amsterdam believes that every student should become ‘woke’. It is no longer about developing talents, but about making white, heterosexual, serious students feel guilty. After all, their ancestors have blood on their hands and they are the new generation of oppressors. Radboud University in Nijmegen has bowed to climate activism and has just decided that all students must be taught the sustainability narrative. The climate crisis is central to this, whether that is scientifically correct or not, that does not matter in Nijmegen.

My own university, TU Delft, has recently adopted the fashionable label ‘climate university’. This university also indoctrinates its students by telling them that there is a man-made climate crisis that must be solved with solar panels, windmills and biomass plants. Criticism is not tolerated. But I say to the Board of Governors, surely the university must be a sanctuary for the unbiased exchange of knowledge? How free is the discussion at TU Delft if everyone is pushed into an ideological straightjacket? Do you still want to send your child to such a university?

Honorary Doctorate
But the worst is yet to come. TU Delft has just announced that it will award EU Vice President Frans Timmermans an honorary doctorate (doctoratus honoris causa), because of the extraordinary achievements he has made with his energy transition policy. But I say to the Board of Governors, Frans Timmermans has done untold damage with his energy policy! He is the great champion of biomass plants, which have been destroying unique ecosystems for many years by massive logging.

Timmermans also believes that sustainability can be achieved with windmills. A technical university such as Delft University of Technology knows perfectly well that such a policy is technically and scientifically nonsensical! Hard figures show that wind farms incur heavy losses; their operating costs are seriously underestimated. Partly due to Timmermans’ policy, energy prices are skyrocketing. And then grant such a person an honorary doctorate? It is an insult to all Delft alumni.

Intertwined interests
Universities have moved in a direction unworthy of science. The interests of science and politics have become strongly intertwined. As a result, critical thinking and truth-finding have not been the starting point for years. Boards of Directors should bear in mind that universities are supposed to be breeding grounds for new ideas. This requires an inspiring research and teaching environment, where new concepts are welcomed and students can develop their talents. Filtering out bad ideas should be done by exposition, argument and observation, not by muzzling creative minds.

Guus Berkhout is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and cofounder of CLINTEL.

Editor’s note: “critical thinking and truth-finding have not been the starting point for years.” How very true.

Enter the dragon
China is slowly but meticulously taking over British Commonwealth.
“In total, China has invested £685 billion across 42 Commonwealth countries since 2005, according to figures compiled by the American Enterprise Institute. To put that figure in context, Chinese investment in Commonwealth member states is, on average, three times higher as a proportion of the recipient’s GDP than in non-member countries, a Telegraph analysis has established.
Economic might, of course, is the most powerful tool in exerting political control, and the consequences of the West allowing China to become the main economic partner for so many countries are far-reaching.
Destabilisation of the Afghan economy provides opportunities for China to move in and exhaust the country’s vast mineral deposits, which include coal, copper, iron ore, lithium, uranium, gold, oil and gemstones.
China calls it the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), its somewhat enigmatic name for the global infrastructure development strategy brought in by President Xi in 2013.
The Belt refers to the economic belt through Central Asia to Europe, while the Road refers to the Silk Road element.
Put simply, it is Xi’s policy of using China’s vast cash reserves to gobble up raw materials, form political alliances and dominate global trade long into the future.
Since 2005 Pakistan has received £60 billion of investment from China, more than a fifth of its GDP, and it now buys 70 per cent of its arms from China.
The US believes Pakistan passes on some of those arms to the Taliban.
Sri Lanka unable to pay was forced to hand over the port and 15,000 acres of land around it to Beijing on a 99-year lease.
Chinese investment in the UK since 2005 amounts to £98.6 billion, some 0.03 per cent of GDP, though the more pertinent fact is the extent to which the West has been happy to rely on China for its manufacturing needs.”

Socialism is just used as a tool (one of the many) by Big Brother behind the curtain. Their goal is to divide and conquer society. Follow the yellow brick road. Who can print all it needs to buy/corrupt the system ?
Meanwhile what freedom do We The People have left ? How can a society with Direct Taxation say it is a free society when Direct Taxation IS Slavery and complete control by Big (Brother)Government.

November 26, 2021 2:07 pm

From the perspective of the students, they are glorified high schools now, with immature, spoiled young people that have no knowledge and still think they know more than professors.

From the perspective of professors, hard left indoctrinators that do not care about actual Science but know really well how to play the woke narrative.

From the perspective of management, a bloated, inefficient machinery that doesn’t work and it’s full of the same hard left idiots, just without MSc and PhD degrees like the faculty.

I very much fear that we can NOT reach peak stupidity until those of us still capable of free and independent thought understand that ignorance can be TAUGHT; even more easily than knowledge!
The promulgation of stupidity requires the unquestioned acceptance of the party’s propaganda; as humanity saw in the Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia or Mao’s China! The killing fields of totalitarianism do not come about except through the blind acceptance of the party line; whether that is Mein Kampf, Das Kapital, the lies and distortions of GangGreen, or the blind acceptance of a poorly tested and largely ineffective medical regime!

You are right.

Stupidity growth has passed its tipping point and is now irreversible; in part, as the outcome of the inherent endogamy of the university and state-financed research: endogamy, as in genetics, tends to concentrate traits, good or bad (selecting the likes by their likes).

So true. I see it all the time. Often it takes the form of people incapable or uninterested in actually thinking about anything or having their own opinions – when asked anything, they have to find the right “authority” in order to know what they believe.

Don’t forget that the IPCC’s whole reasoning behind CAGW is founded on one very simple assumption. They literally stated that they couldn’t see any reason for 20th century warming, so it must be CO2. It’s worth repeating often. If you just dwell on that for a few minutes you can see the enormous stupidity involved.

You can fix ignorance, but those who are ignorant need to be willing to learn.
When it comes to politicians, ignorance has got them everything they have, so they aren’t willing to change.

The ability to predict is the best objective measure of scientific and technical competence.

Climate doomsters have a perfect NEGATIVE predictive track record – every very-scary climate prediction, of the ~80 they have made since 1970, has FAILED TO HAPPEN.

“Rode and Fischbeck, professor of Social & Decision Sciences and Engineering & Public Policy, collected 79 predictions of climate-caused apocalypse going back to the first Earth Day in 1970. With the passage of time, many of these forecasts have since expired; the dates have come and gone uneventfully. In fact, 48 (61%) of the predictions have already expired as of the end of 2020.”

By the end of 2020, the climate doomsters were proved wrong in their scary climate predictions 48 times. At 50:50 odds for each prediction, that is like flipping a coin 48 times and losing every time! The probability of that being mere random stupidity is 1 in 281 trillion! It’s not just global warming scientists being stupid.

These climate doomsters have not been telling the truth – they displayed a dishonest bias in their analyses that caused these extremely improbable falsehoods, these frauds.

The global warming alarmists have a perfect NEGATIVE predictive track record – they have been 100% wrong about every scary climate prediction – so nobody should continue to believe them.

There is a powerful logic that says no rational person or group could be this wrong for this long – they have followed a corrupt agenda – in fact, they knew from the beginning of their catastrophic global warming narrative that they were lying.

The radical greens have NO credibility, make that NEGATIVE credibility – their core competence is propaganda, the fabrication of false alarm.

The IPCC did not use reason.

They followed orders from the UN. Only examine human-caused climate warming.

Warming caused by a humans was to be studied. Nothing else need apply.
CO2 was the most popular approach since it had been in the scientific literature for nearly a century.

Surely the “fairest” redistribution of wealth would come from taxing the “oppressed” at a significantly lower rate than the “oppressors”?
That would cut to the chase indeed.
Once the scam is put in those terms, everyone would know what it is about!
It would perhaps mobilise the well-paid (or at least better-paid than their “victims”) professors to move to a different approach.
And it would certainly mobilise the normal person against woke-ism to the point of political involvement with “their” Congressional Representatives.
And if we all demand that the woke promulgate the idea of different tax rates then they in turn would be hoist on their own political petards.

Mass delusion is a characteristic of human societies. It almost repeat itself every 3rd generation, or around 80-90 years. Looking back 1930s, 1860s, 1780s, 1700s etc. You may count back to BC.

As if the first generation builds, second generation adds and the third generation destroys.

Why? I dont know.

But surely we are now depending on the compassion of the third generation.

It used to be called rags to rags in three generations, the third generation is too posh or has it too easy to follow their grandparents dynamism.
As regards increasing taxes for the oppressors, I don’t think the super-rich would go along with that and will find ways of ensuring that they are exempt. Charitable trusts seem to be exempt from taxes in spite of often seeming to have political objectives, while their officials seem to draw large salaries.

In the UK many males, and some females, have decided that paying an extortionate amount of money for three years of partying and a degree that won’t guarantee a job is not worth the candle.
Instead they are taking up apprenticeships where they get paid, have three years start on the university graduates and can get most of the benefits of university type study by attending day release and evening classes.

Or perhaps the reasons actually backed by the facts. Women do better than men in high school. Men are not as willing to put in the work long enough. Men have more high $ blue collar opportunities. Men are more likely to be incarcerated.

But my sample of one nerd school indicates that men are still going to them. When me and the missus graduated Missouri School of Mines over 40 years ago, it was 86/14 guys and girls. Still 77/23…

The most likely reason is that schools have been increasingly promoting feminism and and female and child centered learning models, where group learning and consensus learning have overwhelmed traditional methods. Competition is avoided and replaced with a ‘feel – good’ approach often affecting boys negatively. It has been found that boys simply shut down and opt out.

“The interests of science and politics have become strongly intertwined. As a result, critical thinking and truth-finding have not been the starting point for years.”

The suppression and/or destruction of critical thinking and free thought is at the core of oppressive totalitarian and authoritarian regimes. It is vital policy if dictators and oppressive regimes are to maintain power and control over the masses. Just ask Kim Jung Un in North Korea or the communist regime in Havana.

Making science the subordinate plaything of government and political and activist movements at the U.N. and at national levels is what has enabled the climate alarmist narrative to survive for over 30 years along with plenty of money. The co-operation of academia and the media play a vital role in having the masses believe questionable or unsound narratives in science and other areas that serve the purposes of those who crave power and control in pursuit of their political or activist ends.

I know that I sound like a broken record when I keep referencing George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four again and again, but the warning he left behind with us is still as important today as it has ever been…..and maybe more so. One of my children had a very strong desire to learn finance , and fortunately one of my friends was a retired PhD in the subject …I paid him well and in 2 years he challenged for a degree at a Good University , Passed with a 4.0 and is now working in that field .. I encouraged my other Son to go into the trades and he is now a project superintendent rebuilding hydro electric generators and making more than $50 per hour . Both are conservative feet on the ground guys ,
. if you can afford this way , I would consider it .
Universities are no longer a place for free speech and the search for truth

It takes an engineer, that is interest in getting things to work in the real world, to point this out.

Every lecturer should be forced to spend every full seventh year working in a real job. Every student should be forced to work in a real job for the year before going to university to help pay the cost of their studies.

Those young men who fought in WWII and so could only begin studies as mature age students after the war would not have put up with any of this nonsense on the campuses. This began with the next generations.

I could see the start of this problem at Cambridge in the 1960s, just before the 1968 student riots.
It seemed to appear among the humanities students who had few lectures during the week and plenty of time for mischief.
(The devil makes work for idle hands to do.)
I can remember seeing people generally regarded as idiots being taken seriously by interviewers on TV current affairs programmes. Nothing like a spat to liven up a boring programme.
Certainly the MSM has a lot to answer for in the spread of wokeness.
Unfortunately people in the MSM tend to employ recruits in ‘their own image’, so it looks as if nothing will change much in the short term at least.

Stephen, the appearance of all sorts of Mickey Mouse degrees that will not enable a student to put food on the table and provide for a roof over their heads have also proliferated. If students had to pay for their degrees there would be fewer students and certainly fewer university jobs for lecturers of worthless courses.

Perhaps it is time to restore logic and reasoning back into all degrees. But to be fair it is not all the humanities that are suited to lazy students. Anyone who has had a good grounding in the classics and had to battle with translating Oedipus Rex from the Greek knows that it is on a level of difficulty comparable with Calculus.

Correction to my comment above: It should be “it takes an engineer, who is interested . . .”

It is more the roadmap of the marxist think tank Frankfurt School.

Critical Theory combined with polymorphic perversion.
And as one of the Frankfurt School members said : We need to bring feelings into science and universities.

And as soon as the protowoke movement(hippies) was started in France and Germany by Daniel Cohn Bendit (The Abbie Hoffman) ,
the hippie Lemmings were told to worship Adorno,Marcuse, Lukasc – Leaders of the Frankfurt School. And the teachings of the Frankfurt School were gradually implemented into universities and the education system.

After Adorno fled Frankfurt(where Marx was born)
he went yo New York (where the guys lived who sponsored the russian revolution)
and then moved to pacific palisades,LA – the place where Hollywood celebrities and producers live.
But what does Hollywood has to do with all of this(except the bias).
Next to Hollywood is Laurel Canyon where the hippie movement started.

In terms of global marxism the world is a small small place with ever repeating patterns of same locations and actors.

It seems to me that many universities are no longer about education, but only about profit and indoctrination. We have been lied to and told a college education always equals financial freedom. It is not true. Young people go to college, take a useless major whose only career path is to be a teacher in that major, and then come out still working at McDonald’s, but now with loads of debt. Thus, these people are disillusioned because in their high school they were promised financial success with a college degree.

Even worse, since everybody gets a trophy, these same young people really and truly believe they are special. They had no discipline at home and the lazy were rewarded the exact same as the hard working. These people really believe they are special. Since they are special and since they have a college degree, the fact that they are still working at McDonald’s means that it is society’s fault for their failure. It is never their own fault, for you see, they are special. They are not wrong, society is wrong. To them, capitalism is wrong. The propaganda their college professors spewed is confirmed to be true.

I went to college and took a useful major. I graduated but came out in a recession. I couldn’t get a job. But I didn’t blame society, I did something about it. I started my own business based on the education I received. I make less money than I would have if I worked for a business, but I have job security and I have no pressure to work too hard. Better still, I have other perks. For instance, I don’t have to worry about taking a poorly tested rushed treatment for a disease I have greater than a 99.99% chance of surviving. And all this good thinking came about because my parents didn’t pander to me, didn’t insist I was special, and disciplined me.

Hence the plan to first excuse all college related debt, and for the future to make college free.

Everyone should read a good book by John Ringo “The Road To Damascus”. Set on a world in a distant future where the left have indoctrinated Children in schools and later as adults in the universities that the state will look after them and it knows what is right.

After the left takes over the planet politics they apply their views on the population to the point that anybody who speaks out against these flawed policies is persecuted, striped of their rights and property. The environmental propaganda is handled by an organization called the “Young Pioneers” who brain wash children to turn their parents in to the planet police for supposed violations. After the parent are removed these mindless children become wards of the state.

This science fiction book has so many parallels to what is happening in our country now it is scary. The majority of the population in the cities is left leaning and a greater part of those are on the government dole. The majority of the people in the rural areas do not agree with these tactics so they are made the enemy of the state and are been forced from their properties at gunpoint by the state police.

This should become required reading in schools along with Animal Farm and 1984.

Religion (e.g. morality) for people capable of self-moderation, and competing interests to mitigate the progress of others running amuck. Left-wing (i.e. authoritarian) ideology introduces a religion (e.g. morality, its relativistic sibling ethics, its politically congruent cousin law) of shared/shifted responsibility, and minority consensus to sustain a democratic/dictatorial duality.

In Australia, there is constant stream of cow manure being spouted about “renewables” finally bringing the price of electricity down. This week we were told that electricity prices will again increase in 2022 but there will be big savings in 2024.

This same story has been pedalled for more than a decade- just the years change – expect mild price increase next year but a gradual decline after that. THERE IS NEVER A DECLINE IN PRICE.

It is as silly as the CSIRO agreeing that the Nino34 region has not warmed in the past 40 decades but guaranteeing it will warm tremendously in the next four decades. It is clear they have ZERO understanding of the dynamics of Earth’s atmosphere over oceans.

We just saw a Nobel Prize go to the developers of a climate model that does not work and here is what is happening to America’s most prestigious university award:

Rhodes Scholarship Becomes Laughingstock After Embracing the Left’s “Woke Culture”

Twitter user David Burge provided one of the finest, and most succinct, descriptions of modern leftism in a brief tweet back in 2015:’

1. Identify a respected institution.

2. kill it.

3. gut it.

4. wear its carcass as a skin suit, while demanding respect.

Burge’s observation has been vindicated over and over again, in one once-useful institution after another. From Harvard University to the FBI, from The New York Times to the Boy Scouts of America, America is littered with organizations that may have deserved respect fifty or one hundred years ago, but are now destructive, parasitic entities sucking the lifeblood of America.

One of the most glaring skin suits of all, though, is America’s most famous academic award, the Rhodes Scholarship.

Dr. Berkhout, thank you for this “inside” story on the degeneration of the West’s higher education. I see no practical approach to saving existing universities, no matter the glories of their rich histories. The are ironically unsustainable and will fall apart.

STEM was relatively untouched because of the technical/mathematical subject matter, but this is under full attack now in the woke system.

Entirely new, high entry standard (probably private) universities will need to be created to compete with the defunct system, help to hasten the demise of the failing system, and at the same time provide top notch scientists, engineers and medical practitioners, etc. to a modern society.

Perhaps such competition will in time spur rehab of some. The eradication of a dozen or more faculties created to accommodate those unable to handle higher ed will be a problem as well as possible recertification of many in the sciences.

The problem is that the state still controls the certifying of universities and colleges.
All the left needs to do is declare that in order to be certified, a college needs to have mandatory classes in how the world was perfect until Europeans messed it up.

Hi Guus,

Several of my fellow HBS students went to the Delft TU, in the late 1950s.
I went to RPI in the US, and now live in Vermont, surrounded by meadows and silent trees.
Right now, it is snowing, the first snowfall this year!

I could never live in the “modern” Netherlands, which has been completely altered by leftist group-think, which adheres to the notion, what is true is no longer true, and what is false, is true. From that starting point, what else could not go wrong?

It is no use fighting mob-“thinking”

You don’t win power by arguing using facts – you win power by attacking anyone in your way. You attack the person, the organization, and anyone who dares to agree with them. AGW was simply one of the easiest paths they took to gather power.

Once people wake up to this they are no longer surprised by the behaviors of the left. Decisions they make suddenly seem focused…you don’t care about loss of life or the truth, just consolidating power.

Reading down through the 75 and counting posts, it’s interesting that the left wing monolithic media is barely mentioned. A [Ctrl F] search on ” media ” gets just 2 hits.

The left has used Alinsky’s rule #4 “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules” to their advantage. They have taken over the press spewing lies at every turn, and we are defenseless to do much of anything about it because of our own rule #1 that states, “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the press.

This has been going on for a long time in the educational system.
Around 40 years ago we had good cause to remove our children from the state system at great cost.
In the pub one day a colleague of mine remarked:- “well it’s ok for your kids; but what of those left behind? – They will be running the country in 40 years time”.
I think of this often these days.

Quote:”Help, what is happening with our universities”
Come on Guss, it’s happening everywhere.

The Problem is that, The Problem is just sooooo huge.
The universities, by being ‘separate’ or distinct entities makes it easy to see there, but The World is now almost entirely full of Zombies.
i.e. Unthinking, half-asleep, chronically depressed (same thing as ‘sleep’), lazy, buck passing, mendacious and thus, without themselves realising, impossibly hypocritical.

In order to ‘see’ the Zombies, you have, primarily, not to be one yourself.

A truly lovely few words went past here on WUWT very very recently when talking about Europe – how it had gone mad apart from Poland, where the (coal burning but that’s = small matter) Poles
Quote:”still had their wits about them

You would never guess why that is..
I’ll give you a clue:
Go visit inside any Polish supermarket of delicatessen you may have in your neighbourhood

Even worse, would the Zombie even know what they were looking for in there?

Ehrlich warned us and for The Zombies reading this, there are many more ways of ‘starving’ than what you think – or what the lazy buck-passing Zombie has seen in the movie-theatre or on TV and, in their Zombified state, confused with reality.

It links nicely actually with the Albatross story we just ran.
The Girls of this (Western) world know all about it – it’s what vast numbers of them call ‘Unreasonable Behaviour’ as they sit, cross-legged and sour-faced, in lawyer’s offices asking for divorces

They do try to give a clue when they go hunting for a Mate – they always now ask for a GSOH
Zombies don’t have a GSOH – they are perfect;y completely humourless because to posses ‘humour’ (the secret of humour is ‘timing’) requires a quick and agile mind

But the Zombies – “simply don’t get it”
How could they?

There is no evidence, scientific or otherwise.
Everything that has happened this year has happened many times before in the last hundred years or so.
You fascination with 1 in 1000 year events is meaningless because by the laws of statistic, thousands of 1 in 1000 year events will happen somewhere in the world every year.

The claims that there is something unusual happening with weather is just more evidence that global warming alarmists have no interest in, much less knowledge of actual science.

November 27, 2021 2:47 am

Not to forget the aspiring students – how many of them spend hours as gamers? Or hours on Meta between lectures. Look at the lunch cantine!

China has taken steps to get the young off that trainwreck.

A very large well known Dutch company moved much of its R&D from Eindhoven and Aachen to Shanghai just after the bank bailout of 2008. It apparently quickly realized the EU talk of massive investment was just that – wind. They were ahead of the curve.

COP26 was a doomed effort to inflate a (infinite?) green finance bubble which of course the Uni’s line up at the trough for. It did not work. So yet again firms and Uni’s are left floundering.

So take a look at China, and why it is forging ahead, politics aside.
Many firms are right now doing exactly that – jingoisim not invited.
Uni Governors would be advised to look at China Uni’s, ignoring all kinds of geopolitical threats which make activists look like wannabees.

To give some hope to some of my fellow WUWT readers that there are actually sensible young people out there, I thought I would chime in (and I hope you read this Dr. Berkhout!). I am a 28 year old engineer with a BS and MS in mechanical engineering, and I was very fortunate to go to a university in the southeast of the USA with many excellent professors who were there to teach us mathematics, science, and engineering. Nothing more and nothing less. One of my favorite professors was a leading nuclear reactor researcher who showed us the simply math of the energy produced by various energy production sources, and since then I have been a skeptic of trying to move to 100% renewables. The simple matter of future energy production needs is what lead me to study climate change and the science behind it, because I wanted to understand whether we are really headed towards catastrophe like I read in so many headlines, because the energy decisions we make now will impact our future tremendously.

I have since learned we are NOT headed towards climate catastrophe, and I fear for the future of democratic western nations.. today I was on a train in Germany, it was about 3C and not sunny at all, and snow was covering a lot of the PV panels on buildings the train passed… need I say more? Fine if you use it as a supplement, disastrous if you solely rely on it.

As an engineer I have to rely on facts and data to make decisions, and to do so I have to understand the system I am working with. It drives me insane to talk to other young people who believe in CAGW and the green dream but can’t even explain what a kWh is…

There are still a few of us young people with our heads screwed on straight. Thank your Dr Berkhout and Clintel for the work you do and for your courage to speak out!

November 27, 2021 6:18 pm

The Greens will do and say absolutely anything to prevent mining operations. They believe they are defending the Earth. Everyone with half a brain knows that renewables will never power the economies of the world, but the Greens lie like rugs, believing that if even one bug, one bunny, one flower, one Spotted Owl is saved, it was worth it, prosperity for the masses be damned.

Dear Mr. Berkhout (et al ; )
I believe I might know the answer to your question, in large measure anyway. It’s a hard thing to express in a comment box, and I just watched a video of someone expressing it better than anyone I ever heard do it. She’s dealing with an American version of the “Woke” problem, but it seems to me ours might just well be one variation on a theme, on a circumstance your universities might be in, which makes them vulnerable to being employed to serve a function. A function that is very desirable for some who would be kings, over us, to have performed for them.
