An Insulate Britain activist jailed after blocking traffic spent more than two years driving across the world in a diesel 4×4.
As she was jailed for four months, Emma Smart announced that she was going on hunger strike as she insisted that her actions were “morally right” and “in my heart I know I am on the right side of history”.
But the 44 year old, who has been arrested a number of times for her protest activities, including a previous charge for blocking a motorway, has been accused of hypocrisy after she drove more than 81,000 miles across 52 countries in a diesel vehicle.
A blog post by Smart said that they had returned to the UK to earn money and were in a position to continue their travels in the 25-year-old four-wheel drive in around 2019, but they put the plans “on pause” to join Extinction Rebellion (XR) and engage in climate activism.
Before becoming involved in XR, Smart and her partner, who describe themselves as “valiant adventurers whose dream is to circumnavigate the planet”, drove across Europe, the Western Sahara and central and south-east Asia.
Their travels between 2012 and 2016 included trips to Spain, Italy, Mongolia, Russia, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Iran, India, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.
They returned to the UK in order to get jobs and earn money, Smart said, and two and a half years after they had returned they had saved enough to ship their Toyota Hilux to South America and begin what they described as “phase 4” of their travels.
Don’t you realise that climate alarmists are totally exempt from any restrictions that they want to impose on little people like us?

I live across the street from an elementary school. Every morning, parents are lined up in their cars to drop kids off, and in the evening, there is a long queue of cars waiting to pick their kids up. Why don’t climate activists control these people (and I wonder how many of them are climate activists). Never mind — I know — it would not be a good outcome (per the Dilbert comic strip, “Must control fist of death”.)
They get a special dispensation for driving on the moral high-ground.

This actually should be seen as a great tragedy. A young woman goes off on an extended trip seeking adventure and excitement. Upon returning home to replenish the finances; she falls prey to a vicious, fundamentalist cult which has no compunctions whatever about sacrificing humans on their altar of secular Progressivism! It is at best 2 or 3 stars on the Hallmark Movie of the Week, depending on how the heroine is able to escape from her captors and return to a life of fun and adventure!
At least 4 stars if they upgrade to a Dodge Powerwagon with a twin-turbo diesel V-10!

81,000 miles is more than most people do in 10 years in the UK, so, yeah, a big fossil fuel consumer And diesel fuel in Asia/Africa is of poor quality and high sulphur content, so very polluting. And that would have cost a lot of money, so she’s well off clearly.

Had she used a modern diesel vehicle with emission controls one might have had a modicum of respect for her, but this gobsh!te slapper was on a jolly, nothing more.
What did she actually do on her extended trip for humanity? Absolutely nothing, whilst the rest of us, who would love to drive thousands of miles into the wilderness, stayed home and worked, paid Taxes and contributed to our society.

I myself would have happily traveled to far off climes and countries, but settled for extensive backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevadas instead. Perhaps during her travels abroad she was exposed to a mind destroying parasite that left her more susceptible to weak minded, emotional arguments from religious nuts!
We should try to help her through her trials and tribulations, but keep her away from sharp objects, power tools, and motor vehicles!

One of the most vocal protestors went on British TV recently and moaned about the number of properties in the UK that are not insulated (An expensive process) and he himself, in his rather expensive property, is uninsulated and when challenged stormed out of the studio.
I am glad to see a judge in the UK serving prison sentences to nine of these nutters. I wonder if any of them will offer support to the various people who they directly prevented from receiving medical treatment and are now paralyzed?
Here in Victoria, Australia, we have dictator Dan trying to pass draconian laws that will make “pandemic” laws permanent and activated by him. He has until 15th Dec to pass them, They are already passed in the lower house (Weak sh!ts) and about 3 upper house MPs “say” they won’t cross the floor and support Andrews. And he calls double speak on the PM and protesters as “evil”.

Up until about two years ago I was gradually persuading my wife that retiring to Australia would be a really good move for us.

I would never go back to NZ now. But I know I have maybe 15 years left, so I will make do here. Though I do plan to travel to the UK at least once in that time when the sc@mdemic is over (Yeah I know, given what has happened in Austria and Germany it will never be over. A repeat of 1939?).
When our current NZ Prime Minister and communist Cindy Ardern loses the next election, and the centre-right parties join in a coalition to defeat the lefties, NZ should rescind all the recent leftie legislation and return to sanity and normality. I suggest you defer a decision for about 3 years, then return home.

Yeah I never realised the irony in that before. Insulate to stop the warming! Irony can be so ironic.
Not really. Where I live the temperature range is -40C to +40C. Not surprisingly our houses are insulated during construction, making it obviously far less expensive that retro-fitting. And the obvious reason for said insulation is the first number I posted. But I can tell you the second number is relevant as well. When the summers are really warm, the insulation actually helps keep the house cooler, much as it keeps it warmer in the winter. If you have central air conditioning, as many do, this reduces your energy use rather considerably (I’d hazard a guess at 25% reduction or more). So it actually does make sense.
Vancouver, Canada is a location that has homes that tend to lack insulation, much as would be the case in England. My sister lives there in a home constructed in the 1970s and they freeze when it actually gets cold (keep in mind cold for Vancouver is -5C) and they tend to be very warm when it actually heats up. An appropriate amount of insulation would help in both situations.
I certainly get the point on the irony however.
I am curious about your sister’s home. The 1970s were when insulation was all the rage for new & existing homes because of the oil crisis at the time when heating-oil costs sky-rocketed. Building Regulations (Codes for you Colonials) standards were being raised to take into account the rising costs of fuel for heating, & gas was not widespread within the UK at the time, Global Warming hadn’t been invented back then. Still there are many homes in Britain that require insulating & others re-insulating to improve heat-retention for the winter months, some costs will be subsidised no doubt, but fuel costs will inevitably rise then level off, as they usually do!!!
And central air conditioning! I live in a Mediterranean climate and it is a wonderful thing to be sure. However, I would not complain if our winters were warmer. Unless you guys can tow the British Isles closer to the equator, you are unlikely to experience the joys of a Mediterranean climate any time soon.
Hey, we folks in Florida send them our warm water via the Gulf Stream. Without that they’d be Greenland.

I though the UK had done a lot of insulating of social housing by wrapping it around the outside. True, that does have a fundamental flaw as was shown recently although in truth it was ably demonstrated back in 1999.

Theorectically insulating a property externally is the better way as it utilises the thermal mass of the structure. There is a risk of a condition known as Interstitial Condensation which causes moisture build up within the building fabric.

Spun glass insulation or worse, expanded foam insulation are fossil fuel products.
Limit fossil fuels will drive these product prices through the roof, even uninsulated ones.
USA went through a period where builders and contractors ‘insulated’ houses and business buildings. Then it was in the name of efficiency.
Then they entered thirty-forty years of sick building syndrome from people living or working in those freshly insulated buildings..
The worst affected were built by those inexperienced at insulating buildings.
Even contractors and builders who were experienced had problems as they expanded their crews trying to meet demand.
Turns out that buildings need healthy fresh air exchanges with the outside air.
Then, there is their nightmare scenario demanding everyone to install heat pumps.
“Insulate Britain protestor” made me search for what is “insulate” mean as an adjective (even Oxford English dictionary only defined as a verb). I did not realize until reading this comment that the movement is “Insulate Britain”. Do they mean like fiberglass insulation for homes? Another meaning of insulate is “to place in an isolated situation or condition; segregate”, maybe that is what they mean heh. Cut off Britain from the world.

I met these two a few yrs ago at the overland expo, promoting their podcast, and trying to sell and “overland design service”, a mean feat at that venue, sat in front of a truck with a wire cable on the winch (use synthetic winch rope FFS), unimpressive enthusiastic amatures with more PR sense than common sense. They managed to get promoted on the BBC, clearly some media connections in the background as a ‘production manager’ on wildlife films.

I, for one, am sick of this tyranny of the noisy! I am perfectly capable of deciding for myself if I wish to eat meat or not, drive an EV or not, install solar panels or not, reduce my carbon footprint or not, etc. I don’t need to be lectured and nagged by a bunch of dogooders with a shaky to non-existent grasp of the natural laws that govern the world temperatures and various climates.

You first hand exploration of the Old World is impressive, as is your ambition to explore the New World. I suggest you round out your experience by starting with Venezuela. After that you might undertake to drive your robust diesel through the Darien. Don’t stop for hitchhikers though, if they are not economic refugees from Haiti or Venezuela, they will likely be cartel traffickers looking for new business opportunities.

Blocking highways, forcing people to idle their cars (actual pollutants from vehicle emissions are typically the worst when idling), or driving longer, or going home and trying again…all increase CO2 emissions.
