A NEW REPORT released today by the Climate Council finds the lack of federal government climate policy exposes the nation to serious economic consequences – including 20,000 jobs at risk in New South Wales – from carbon border tariffs.
Markets are moving: the economic costs of Australia’s climate inaction was authored by Climate Councillor Nicki Hutley, a former partner at Deloitte Access Economics.
Ms Hutley said: “The world is responding to the climate crisis and carbon border tariffs are now inevitable. Australians will pay the price unless the federal government cuts our national carbon emissions in line with our major trading partners – and NSW will be disproportionately affected.
The European Union announced a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in July 2021. Ms Hutley said the new modelling by economists at Victoria University shows Australia will experience a cut to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a result.
If South Korea, China and the Group of 7 follow suit, New South Wales will be heavily impacted due to the dominance of targeted exports – particularly coal. Under the above scenario, the state is projected to lose around 20,000 jobs and more than $5 billion in Gross State Product.
“The federal government should be getting out in front, and putting support for regions affected in place. The new, low-carbon economy is coming and we urgently need a transition plan in place for Australian communities and workers”, said Ms Hutley.

Europe is in the grip of an energy crisis amid rising prices for natural gas, increased demand for fossil fuels and the approach of the winter that will make access to fuel even more urgent.
The price of natural gas on the continent has risen sharply over the past year with the European benchmark up nearly 600 percent as of Thursday and the European Union(EU) seeking more gas supply from Russian energy firm Gazprom, which is already Europe’s largest supplier, providing 35 percent of the continent’s needs.
The price fell on Thursday to $120.79 per megawatt-hour (MWh) after Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country could sell gas to European spot buyers through its domestic market. The previous price was $134 per MWh on Tuesday.
Rising costs have been driven by increased demand in Asia and other parts of the world as economies reopen after shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ongoing difficulties with gas supply and costs have reopened questions about the use of coal.

What can I say – bad timing guys. If the Climate Council had released their ridiculous report a few months ago, it might have been well received. But right now, as the energy crisis bites, and desperate nations openly consider ditching climate targets to keep people warm in winter, a report demanding the end of coal just makes them look like fools.
It doesn’t make them look like fools, it proves that they are fools.

Glasgow would welcome idiots like the Aussie Climate Council, because it appears they are the third highest country generating renewable energy in the European Union. That claim is a clever lie, however, as only 15 to 30% of Glasgow energy is generated locally, the rest is imported, and is generated mostly with fossil fuels. Glasgow is the prefect place for a meeting of clever liars.
Not wishing to contradict you but could you supply the source of your figures?
Try google or duckduckgo, easy to find the numbers. Glasgow has put forth numbers of how much of their generated electricity is renewable, but the reality is the great majority is imported, and the majority of the imported electricity is generated with fossil fuels. Alba, here’s what I do when reading WATTS, if there is a theme I want to review and verify, I click on next window to open, then start an internet search for what appears to be actual data, review it, then go back to the WATTS theme. This process requires introspection.

In 2019 Scotland met 90.1% of its equivalent electricity consumption from renewables, according to Scottish Government figures.
Notice the weasel word ‘equivalent’ as they dump their unreliables on the UK grid whilst coal gas and nuclear elsewhere pick up the overall insurance tab? Scotland is nowhere near 90.1% self reliant for power on their windmills although they have plenty of legacy hydro that made economic sense at the time.
What’s legacy and “at the time” about?
Aren’t they using the hydro to store excess wind power? I’d heard there was plenty of time when they are payed to shut down turbines because there’s a glut of production and stupid rules pay them to NOT produce anything. ( FAKE simulated profitability ).

I don’t think there is much pumped storage in Scotland, it’s mostly standard hydro generation.
The reason wind is sometimes curtailed is due to the fact that Scotland has built too much wind capacity for the infrastructure, i.e. the transmission lines, to carry when wind is strong.
As a point of general design of any electrical system, maximum efficiency is where the supply and the load are close to each other. The greater the distance the power travels the less efficient it is.
If Scotland was not connected to the U.K. grid it would have problems with such an over capacity of wind generation.

It is not possible. During 2020 there were several periods during which there was hardly any wind, and several periods when there was so much wind that the windmills had to be feathered so that they didn’t destroy themselves by spinning too fast.
The weasle word “equivalent” is the key to the whole scam, and the Tartan Bander-log (McBander-log?) know this perfectly well.
But to winkle out the real data will be very difficult if not immpossible.
Reliability may be 99.99% but if there is a shutdown during open heart surgery, it might be rather important to the patient — especially if anyone were stupid enough to ban the sale of backup generators.
griff, you need to watch the tendency of the CAGW crowd to use weasel words to mislead the gullible. Scotland generates 15% of its electricity in Scotland, sure, the majority of this by “renewables”, but Scotland imports 85% of its electricity, and guess what? This imported electricity is mostly produced by fossil fuels and somewhat by nuclear.
If that is the case, then COP26 should refuse all fossil fuel energy and transportation.
All transportation at COP26 should be by walking, cycling, running or Electric Vehicle.
Preferably, all air travel is refused in or around Glasgow. Attendees that require air travel due to oversea locations should fly into a different town/city and take EV transportation or fossil fuel free transportation to Glasgow.
All fossil fuel energy feeds into COP26 must be turned off. Only renewable energy supplies are allowed.
Accepting imported mixed energy is banned as fossil fuels contribute to those import electric feeds.
Delusional Griffy. On average, Scotland produces around 25-30% of it’s energy consumption from renewables and less than 5% of it’s heating – figures from Glasgow council if you wish to check. Meanwhile over 25% of Scottish households are in fuel poverty and businesses have been leaving Scotland to relocate to England, Wales and N. Ireland. It’s not looking good for them, is it?

No one ever says this but Solar Panels need to be cleaned and regularly. So go from a Continuous Pipeline Welder to a Solar Panel cleaner ain’t a career move!
That’ll work a trick in a country routinely in deep drought status! Cleaning the panels will likely become a very expensive service.
All you have to do is pass a law for a minimum wage of say $100 per hour for cleaning solar panels, paid by tax$, and everyone will stay home to clean their panels, install new ones, politicians can run on increasing the minimum wage… Voila!….the green economy….
That is direct jobs there are another 80,000 in engineering and administration services 🙂

Tim Flannery has cost the Australian taxpayers billions of dollars over decades as a government adviser on climate and associated technology recommendations. Non of his predictions on climate have come true and his recommended technology has failed miserably. The Climate Council carries the Australian Government logos, yet calls itself an independent body. Our community formed an organisation to fight renewables. On the basis of a paper we wrote and submitted against a climate bill that federal member Zali Steggall put forward in January, we were invited to speak at a parliamentary hearing in Canberra. Out of thousands of submissions, only a handful were chosen to speak. The bill did not go forward.
There are rumours that’s she’s looking to resubmit this bill and I hope that it gets more attention than State minister Matt Kean’s energy bill. Mark Latham was the only politician who took the time to fight against the bill so it was passed. As a direct result Renewable Energy Zones have been established and our community will now have rolling wind, solar and battery projects over many years. We are up to proposals covering 122 square kilometres of prime agricultural land! All this starting from 4 kilometres of our town. Just ‘one’ of the projects so far has indicated that we will have 70 to 90 large trucks making the trip to the Port, 300 kilometres away ‘every day’ of the 34 month project, and up to 130 during peak times. A 600 kilometre return journey, for each truck! This alone makes a farce of the whole saving CO2 scam. There are many regional towns going through this.
Anyway, the crux of this story is that part of Zali Steggall’s proposed bill is to nominate an ‘independent body’ to be appointed autonomously, that would have the power to make decisions on climate issues without government consultation.
Not hard to work out who that independent body would be. And you can bet that some of those involved will tell you that 97% of scientists agree, and the hockey stick will help prove it. Trust the science. After all Australia, these fine people have been advising our government for decades, without question.
It will be an elected position based on promised setting of the CO2 thermostat. Starting at a lower setting to reduce the perception of global warming, but after a few decades, setting the world at about the average temperature of Singapore due to voter expectations…./s

but China excepted, the number of coal power stations worldwide is dropping as is the pipeline of new coal plant.

coal export earnings climbing from $23bn to $33bn and thermal coal up
from $16bn to $24bn.
So reverse the question and you try answering, given above why would a country get out of the market until it dies?
But griff you apparently didn’t notice that between 2000 and 2020 the world DOUBLED its coal fired capacity to around 2045GW after explosive growth in China and India and those plants have a long life ahead of them. (Source Carbon Brief)

Until there is a viable alternative to the unreliable technology of so-called renewable energy, there will continue to be a demand for coal and other fossil fuels.
I’ll be honest, I don’t see how tariffs are going to do anything but hurt the nation’s that impose them. Tariffs always result in a tit for tat response. It’s the little guys that always end up paying more than they would have without the tariffs. Only the government’s profit thru indirect taxes, i.e., tariffs.
Australia has trade deficits with all the countries that would impose tarriffs which makes import from those countries more expensive and less desirable …. please impose the tarriff.
