L A Times manufactures “extreme heat” propaganda to comply with Biden’s climate alarmist agenda

Guest post by Lawrence Hamlin

The Los Angeles Times is at it again with its latest climate alarmist propaganda article warning that “Extreme heat is one of the deadliest consequences of climate change” and claiming that “California undercounts the human toll…even as heat waves become more frequent and more deadly.”

All of this is of course timed to comply with Biden’s latest globally ineffective and irrelevant schemes to push his costly and bureaucratically onerous climate change agenda which will have no impact on either reducing global emissions or temperatures which are completely controlled by the energy use and emissions of the world’s developing nations led by China and India.

The Times article starts with a revisit to the state’s August 2020 heat wave period where California’s government mandated excessive use of unreliable renewable energy led to rolling blackouts (which is unmentioned by the Times) and notes that year 2020 August was the “hottest on record in California” while highlighting individual stories of people dealing with the hot weather as though the state’s residents have never had to deal with such extraordinarily high summer temperatures.

The Times article fails completely to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the state’s top ten summer monthly temperature records which show that the highest summer monthly temperature ever recorded in California was in July of 1931 (95.6 degrees F) followed in decreasing temperature order by July 2021 (94.3 degrees F), July  2006 (94.2 degrees F), July 2018 (94.0 degrees F), July 1959 (93.9 degrees F), July 2003 (93.8 degrees F), July 2017 (93.7 degrees F) and then July 2005 tied with August of  2020 (93.5 degrees F) and then finally July 1933 (93.4 degrees F).

The Times article also fails to address EPA’s annual heat wave index trends of multi-day extreme heat across the United Sates which shows that the U.S. is not experiencing increased intensity or occurrences of heat waves during the period between 1895 through 2020 which directly contradicts alarmists claims of increasing heat waves made by the Times.

The Times then asserts that it has uncovered through its analysis (the details of which are unaddressed and of course the Times would never manipulate information to push a climate alarmist agenda) that the official death certificates citing “heat exposure” as the cause death in California between 2010 and 2019 which showed 599 deaths during this period undercounted the actual deaths which the Times claims should have been 3,900 deaths.

The Times believes that this revelation shows that states must undertake major new efforts to track and protect citizens from extreme heat as proposed by Biden in his latest attempt to justify his useless, costly and onerous climate change agenda.

The Times then notes that “Each year, extreme heat kills more Americans than any other climate-fueled hazard, including hurricanes, floods and wildfires, but it gets far less attention because it kills so quietly” without of course providing any data to support its claim.

One of the most comprehensive and recent global studies of the impact of exposure to cold or hot temperatures on global, regional and national mortality was performed by the Lancet Journal which collected time-series data on mortality and ambient temperatures from 750 locations in 43 countries addressing the period from year 2000 to 2019 using five meta-predictors in established grids sizes across the globe.

The study found that there were 5,083,173 deaths per year associated with non-optimal temperatures accounting for 9.43% of all global deaths equating to 74 temperature related excess deaths per 100,000 residents.

Of that total 4,594,098 were cold-related deaths accounting for 8.52% of all global deaths (67 deaths per 100,00 residents) while 490,075 were heat-related deaths accounting for 0.91% of all global deaths (7 deaths per 100,000 residents). Cold related deaths were 9.4 times greater than heat-related deaths.

The report noted the following breakdown of global regional outcomes:

“Of all excess deaths, 51.49% occurred in Asia, 23.88% occurred in Africa, 16.44% occurred in Europe, 7.70% occurred in the Americas, and 0.48% occurred in Oceania. Most grids with a high density of excess deaths were in large, low-lying, crowded coastal cities in Eastern and Southern Asia and cities in Eastern and Western Europe.”

The report also noted that over the study time period changes in the proportion of heat and cold related death rates changed as follows:

“Globally, from 2000-03 to 2016-19 the cold-related death ratio changed by -0.51 percentage points and the heat-related excess ratio increased by +0.21 percentage points, leading to a net decline of -0.30 percentage points.”

The Times article failed completely to address the huge and overwhelming global dominance of cold related deaths compared to heat related deaths, failed to address the magnitude and scale of global heat and cold related death rates (especially failure to compare millions of deaths each year globally versus California and U.S. thousands of deaths over multiple years) as well as failure to address the disparate geographical global death rate variations.

The Times article is just its usual politically driven climate alarmist propaganda that relies on extensive use of distortion and deception.

I remember thinking, when the new “climate change” name came in, that it was an attempt to conceal the fact that it was needed because there had obviously been no warming. This was in the days before the warmist decided that they needed to fudge the temperature record. But please, don’t call it fudging. Call it “homogenisation”.

I agree completely. I don’t even want to see people using the acronym CAGW. Either humans are causing “global warming” or it’s all just a massive smoke screen to disguise the political intent.

“Climate change” is intentionally misleading … an appeal to ambiguity – equivocation … a portmanteau from which globalists can dispense any random nonsense they choose and call it science.

It’s a good argument you put forward; indeed if one asks an alarmist what causes ‘climate change’ they have to answer with ‘ global warming ‘. And global warming is difficult to proove . .

Why does it seem the religious believers in climate catastrophe always preach their sermons at the wrong time? Just this week in the San Francisco Bay Area, we felt the first of the cold air masses cutting across the land telling us natives that winter is on it’s way. They weren’t paying their bills for the Karpowerships so they got cut off-
“Karpowership” will stop supplying Lebanon with electricity at the end of the contract and will start withdrawing its steamers Fatma Gul Sultan and Orhan Bey (in-24.com)

No doubt the Lebanese people will be thrilled not to be using those oil fired power stations anymore and doing their bit for the climate. Perhaps they could get some carbon credits for that?

There’s diesel available. Lebanon just isn’t paying their bills to the suppliers.
China frequently steps in to situations like these to offer debt-traps to desperate countries. But Lebanon offers no strategic advantages to China, especially being in the Mediterranean and surrounded by Syria and Israel and the frequency of mini-wars and religious extremist attacks would put Chinese advisors at risk.

Why would Sinema or Manchin vote for things like that? For that matter, why would some Republicans help this process along?

Passing this bill will go a long ways towards destroying the United States as it was founded.

From there article: “The Times article fails completely to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the state’s top ten summer monthly temperature records which show that the highest summer monthly temperature ever recorded in California was in July of 1931 (95.6 degrees F)”

Oops, there it is! The Early Twentieth Century is always showing up in the record books when it comes to high temperatures. As high, or higher, than today, as a matter of fact. CO2 wasn’t driving that warmth. That’s according to even the IPCC Climate Gods. There must be something other than CO2 driving temperatures, don’t you think?

Reply to  Tom Abbott

Don’t think the IPCC would argue against that. Natural variability, especially on a regional scale, can always cause extremes. The 1930s weren’t particularly warm globally; whereas the 2010/20s certainly were and are.

Interesting to note that despite the big 1930s temperature spike shown in the NOAA California data for July, there is still a warming trend since then. The same data shows a July increase of +0.1 deg. F per decade up to 2021, even if you start the trend at the 1931 peak.

Note also, in the 36 years of California records up to and including 1931, max July average temperatures only reached or surpassed 92.0 F four times. In the 36 years up to and including 2021 they have reached or surpassed 92.0 F 13 times.

There must be something other than CO2 driving temperatures, don’t you think

Yes, there is:

Radiative Energy Flux Variation from 2001–2020
Radiative energy flux data, downloaded from CERES, are evaluated with respect to their variations from 2001 to 2020. We found the declining outgoing shortwave radiation to be the most important contributor for a positive TOA (top of the atmosphere) net flux of 0.8 W/m2 in this time frame. We compare clear sky with cloudy areas and find that changes in the cloud structure should be the root cause for the shortwave trend. The radiative flux data are compared with ocean heat content data and analyzed in the context of a longer-term climate system enthalpy estimation going back to the year 1750. We also report differences in the trends for the Northern and Southern hemisphere. The radiative data indicate more variability in the North and higher stability in the South. The drop of cloudiness around the millennium by about 1.5% has certainly fostered the positive net radiative flux. The declining TOA SW (out) is the major heating cause (+1.42 W/m2 from 2001 to 2020). It is almost compensated by the growing chilling TOA LW (out) (−1.1 W/m2). This leads together with a reduced incoming solar of −0.17 W/m2 to a small growth of imbalance of 0.15 W/m2. We further present surface flux data which support the strong influence of the cloud cover on the radiative budget.

With that kind of variability over an ~120 years of data, the range bars for any high probability predictions would be rather large. And unless the 1930s data can be discarded for discrete cause, predicting future temps from a short-term trend seems like mostly guesswork.

Reply to  Don Forcash

The same error bars would apply to the 1930s data. So the ‘best estimate’ is still that more recent is warmer.

“The 1930s weren’t particularly warm globally; whereas the 2010/20s certainly were and are.”

All the unmodified regional charts from around the world, and in both hemispheres, show the 1930’s were just as warm as today.

And the anectdotal evidence, such as that supplied by Tony Heller’s newspaper articles of the past, confirms that hot, severe weather was a worldwide phenonmenon in the Early Twentieth Century.

Alarmists like to pretend regional charts don’t exist because if they acknowledge them then they have to give up the Human-caused Climate Change meme, because it was just as warm in the recent past with much less CO2 in the air, as it is today with much more CO2 in the air. CO2 has made no difference in the high temperatures. The Earth is not experiencing unprecedented warmth as alamists claim.

And what do alarmists base their unprecedented warmth claims on? Answer: A bogus, bastadized, instrument-era, computer-generated Hockey Stick chart. It’s the only thing showing unprecedented warming and is refuted by the regional surface temperature charts recorded by individual human beings over the years who had no Human-caused Climate Change bias to affect their recording of the temperatures.

If you downplay the warmth of the Early Twentieth Century, you are ignoring science that doesn’t fit your narrative. It’s out there to be had, but you close your eyes. Don’t you see this?

That’s an interesting point, about the time period. There seems up be a roughly 60 year cycle in temperature. The scare started at the bottom of the cycle, when temperatures were lowest. We are now at the top of the cycle. We may well be in for a couple of decades of cooling, like the 60s and 70s of ‘the ice age cometh’ fame.

It’s like starting to measure temperature at dawn, and by the afternoon declaring that we’re all going to burn up by the end of the week.

All these climate alarmists ignore and shut their eyes to the facts that COAL mining and use globally has increased from 2008 at steady 4.7 billion tonnes to over 8 billion tonnes .
All this increase and more is coal used in Asia ,as western countries are demonizing and restricting coal use .
The rest of the world can spend trillions for no avail if the burning of coal is causing global warming .
If there really is a climate emergency why is the developed world pushing ahead with nuclear power ?
Where is the urgency to research safe and reliable nuclear ?

I agree with you, Gregory. That sentence jumped out at me too.

In what way are temperatures controlled by energy use and emissions? At the worst, you need to add the word ‘allegedly’. CO2 has not yet been proven guilty and should be regarded as innocent until it is.

The LA Times photo is taken amidst a massive homeless encampment at E 7th and Blocker Streets, showing a homeless man going through his typical daily ablutions, showering at a fire hydrant. Rather than the false “extreme heat” narrative, the story, as illustrated by their own photo, is really deflecting from LA’s much bigger problem, rampant homelessness created by their own policies.

“The Times article fails completely to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the state’s top ten summer monthly temperature records which show that the highest summer monthly temperature ever recorded in California was in July of 1931 (95.6 degrees F) followed in decreasing temperature order by July 2021 (94.3 degrees F), July 2006 (94.2 degrees F), July 2018 (94.0 degrees F), July 1959 (93.9 degrees F), July 2003 (93.8 degrees F), July 2017 (93.7 degrees F) and then July 2005 tied with August of 2020 (93.5 degrees F) and then finally July 1933 (93.4 degrees F).”

And pray tell what role did Urban Heat Island play in the temperature highs referenced above over the last 30-40 years? Is it not common knowledge that California’s urban areas have seen quite a bit of population and economic growth since the end of WWII?

How do the rise in temperature records in the large coastal cities compare with that of small communities in California which do not experience much if any UHI? Why does Orwellian SoCal Big Brother (a.k.a. the LA Times) not talk about this in its screed?

Inquiring minds want to know.

So the highest summer monthly temperatures ever recorded in California, are during decades when generally weaker solar wind states are driving a warmer AMO phase.

Then most of those heatwaves were also felt in northwest Europe as they were discretely solar driven.

Dr. Mass made it clear the Pacific Northwest Heatwave was created by very rare three weather processes that combined in the region to produce that incredible heatwave.

Nothing to do with AMO at all.

and Cliff Mass also observed that even if we allowed 2F for global warming, there would STILL have been record hot temps.

What a fizzer for the agw boosters.

The US heat dome was in June not July.

Your comment is confusing because you ignore my comment to deflect to something else.

What I posted was to show it was THREE REGIONAL weather events combining to generate the heatwave, which isn’t dependent on the AMO or the solar cycle.

The heat dome was in June and July but from separate weather processes causing them.

You didn’t show that a weather event in a small region of the planet was under direct influence of the AMO cycle at all.

This is my first comment, which is BEFORE your replying comment with a bunch of hot dates in it:

It was YOU who deflected in the first place!

Thus you have failed to make your case.

I wonder if there is more to this problem than just just heat as there are likely many regional differences and causes, particularly in a state as big as California with a very diverse climate.

I recall recently that Jim Steele did a segment on landscape changes in the central valley and how that affected aridity in the region. https://wattsupwiththat.com/2021/08/26/drying-and-warming-of-our-earth-part-1/ It looked at changes in the amount of wetlands between the 19th century and the 20th century. Most of the wetlands became irrigated agricultural lands. However, agriculture, still puts a lot of water back in the atmosphere and he notes in the segment, this water can get recycled 3x through evaporation, precipitation and re-use.

Then in the 21st century, a large portion of the water from the California Water Project was diverted to the sea as environmental discharges and most recently there’s been restrictions on ground water pumping. Have these most recent changes led to substantially increased the aridity and therefore temperature? If it has, then the LA Times is pushing the very simplistic “turn down the CO2 control knob” that might at best have a tertiary affect on the problem and is not a knob that the state of California can control no matter how hard it tries. But the aridity which has been caused land use changes is local and likely a much more effective strategy to minimize the temperature impacts on the state.

And of course the LA Times censored skeptics long ago, so if Lawrence tried to have this rebuttal of their propaganda published in their paper it would be ignored.

I zeroed in on this paragraph:

The Times then asserts that it has uncovered through its analysis (the details of which are unaddressed and of course the Times would never manipulate information to push a climate alarmist agenda) that the official death certificates citing “heat exposure” as the cause death in California between 2010 and 2019 which showed 599 deaths during this period undercounted the actual deaths which the Times claims should have been 3,900 deaths.

The hypocrisy, it burns. There is actual, factual, verifiable proof that cold kills more than heat. The LA Times won’t mention that. There is actual, factual, verifiable proof that COVID-19 deaths are massively overcounted. The LA Times won’t mention that. There is actual, factual, verifiable proof that COVID-19 “vaccine” deaths are undercounted. The LA Times won’t mention that. There is actual, factual, historically verifiable proof that big government leftist, or communist, have killed millions of people through incompetence and malice. The LA Times won’t mention that. Instead, what they do claim, without proof, is that heat deaths are undercounted.

When a person’s death helps the political goals of the leftist, one death is one too many. When a person’s death hinders the political goals of the leftist, one billion deaths is irrelevant. The hypocrisy is stunning.

“Of all excess deaths, 51.49% occurred in Asia, 23.88% occurred in Africa, 16.44% occurred in Europe, 7.70% occurred in the Americas”

BoJos UK is going to get a huge increase this winter that will bump up all of Europe’s numbers. This will have nothing to do with climate change. It’s all on Gov policy. This man turned out to be worse than the string of idiots before him.

I hate to see this happening to a country that has been a phenomenon in world affairs and spawned the English speaking world. India is now the de jure head of the Brit Commonwealth on terms of common sense.

Here in the UK, we have a shortage of food grade Co2, too much ‘man made’ Co2 and during this coming winter, rail companies are going to use dry ice pellets (Co2) to help remove wet leaves on railway lines! We are told that the dry ice will melt and turn into a gas which will dissipate harmlessly……
You couldn’t make it up!!

Why so much focus on the month of July? I’ve lived for 58 years in Los Angeles and the hottest months are August and September when it routinely exceeds 110 degrees at some point. Except not this year. The hot weather in the 90s usually extends to mid-October. This year it petered out on Oct. 3rd. Also we had no extended periods over 100 degrees this year. If the climate in Los Angeles is changing, it is not changing fast enough for anyone to notice a difference in a 50 year time span. Nothing new to see here folks, move along!

From what I’ve observed in family and friends, it is women being targeted with such agenda news and other distortion tactics. The same is taking place in FB targeting. The consequences include voter steering and suicides from social influence effects pointed out by the whistleblower.

As global prices for fossil fuels skyrocket, and the Greentard policies that choked production slam into the iceberg of cold winter weather; one has to ask if there has ever been a more obvious “own goal” by a political movement! Continuing to lie about CAGW is getting more and more ridiculous as homes and businesses hunker down and pray for fuel this winter!
Only a blinkered and corrupt media whore like the LA Times could come up with this kind of nonsense, while ignoring gas prices reaching $8.00/gallon and the oilspill likely caused by the backup of freighters in SoCal ports!
I can’t wait to hear the latest spin from our resident trolls as to why this is beneficial! Come on, Loy-d’oh, griffter and Simon, what are your masters telling you to parrot?

Wiki has an interesting climate table for Cape Town from 1960 to 1990. This city and the surrounding area has a Mediterranean climate like California. While for some six months the city average high is around 25°C/76°F during these years they had record highs of over 37.8°C/100°F. This was never viewed as “extreme heat” but a feature of many a dry summer. Suddenly, in recent years, these temperatures are classified as “extreme heat” and snowflake alarmists are greatly distressed.

In Australia, Queensland was the state with the worst number of deaths due to cold per capita. Out version of Florida. It rarely snows there but the temperatures do sometimes get below freezing, catching people out under prepared.

One major problem is that Australian houses are very poorly designed for combating cold. I hate the winters, even here in the tropics, and usually (when allowed, grrrr!) become a Climate Refugee and escape to southern Europe.

I remember sitting around a kerosene heater as a kid in Brisbane in the 1950s, before going to bed at sundown (6 pm in late July), and getting up at 5 the next morning to help my Dad with his milk delivery run.

Every yard, park, and grass footpath white with frost.

All of this is of course timed to comply with Biden’s latest globally ineffective and irrelevant schemes to push his costly and bureaucratically onerous climate change agenda which will have no impact on either reducing global emissions or temperatures which are completely controlled by the energy use and emissions of the world’s developing nations led by China and India.”

Folks are free to move their locations if they find the climate difficult. This is the amazing thing about America. Those who can’t tolerate heat should go to Chicago, or even move within CA. More people seem to be going the other way though, which suggests they do like the heat. Maybe the Times should ask them?
