On questioning the dogma, have a look at NASA’s earth energy budget. It claims 40.1 watts/sqM of surface radiation escapes to space. Yet numerically integrating Planks law (easy to do in Excel) shows that the surface emission between 8-9.5 micron plus 10-13.5 microns is 121.7 watts/sqM at 288K. Since the atmospheric window by definition is “the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be transmitted through the atmosphere with relatively little atmospheric interference” something other than green house gases is reducing actual transmission to space to 40.1/121.7 = 0.33 of surface emission (presumably clouds). Given this, it is reasonable to assume exactly the same thing would happen to emission between 14 and 17 microns in the absence of CO2. Again integrating Planks law between 14 and 17 microns shows 53 watts/sqM of surface emission at 288K. But the NASA data predicts only 33% of that or 17.5 watts/sqM would actually escape to space. According to Nimbus, CO2 emits freely to space over the 14-17 micron range at an emission temperature of around 220K (at the tropopause). This translates to 19 watts/sqM. So according to NASA 17.5 watts/sqM to space without CO2 yet according to Nimbus 19 watts/sqM with CO2. So what impact does CO2 really have? Then again, maybe the NASA energy budget needs questioning.
GREAT little experiment to perform –
Aim one’s infrared thermometer (with a sensor working at 14 to 15 um) straight up on a cloudless, dry day – tell me it doesn’t ‘bottom out’ under -55 deg F … try the same experiment on a humid day – note the value … on the order of 0 to -10 deg F… and perhaps a little higher …
That’s the principle by which a “whiter than white” paint is said to work. The paint is white in visible light, but (IIRC) dark in infrared; so it reflects visible, but radiates IR. The clear sky is blue, meaning it scatters blue (and to some extent other colors), but is said to be black in IR–which means it transmits IR. The reason IR-black objects radiate to IR-black sky is that the objects are at the ambient temperature, so they radiate somewhat like a black body at 270 to 300 K (depending on the temp); whereas the universe–in between stars–radiates hardly at all at IR temps. So this “whiter than white” paint is able to dump ambient heat to the sky, even in the day time (and of course more so at night).
BTW, this paint is not, from what I understand, yet available commercially, and may be expensive if it does become available. And as _Jim mentioned, it’s only really effective on cloudless dry days. So I suppose it would help in Phoenix, but not so much in Seattle.
Mcswell; there are plenty of surfaces which have low emissivity (high reflectivity) in the visible yet high emissivity in the IR. A simple sheet of glass is transmissive in the visible (low emissivity) yet high emissivity in the IR. So I would expect that a sheet of glass painted with ordinary white paint on the inside would meet your requirement. Indeed many projectors used to use a glass heat absorbing filter which passed visible but blocked (ie: absorbed) infrared and high absorptivity = high emissivity.
Hi Jim; unfortunately I don’t have an infrared thermometer so I cant do the experiment. 14-15 micron covers the R branch of the CO2 absorption/emission profile with a sea level absorptivity of about 0.12 abs/meter. It is not a strongly absorbing region for water vapour. Given that I would expect the reading would simply reflect the temperature at the measurement location. At 0.12 abs/meter it means 90% the downwelling 14-15 micron radiation was generated within 8 meters above the sensor.
If you have done the experiment and can report something different I would be interested to hear about it. One question however, how do you limit your IR thermometer to only accept radiation between 14-15 microns and not over the entire IR spectrum.

A quick reflection from an Australian man in the street.
A key difference between Australia and the USA right now from a political battleground point of view is- in Australia we deal with one controversial issue at a time, and that’s COVID. Other Marxist issues such as Climate change, migration, gender equity, racism are still in the background but not on stage at that moment.
As a fellow Australian, are you sure we deal with even one issue at I time. Seems to me the analogy should be with sheep, simply believing what our socialist media ram down our throats.
