DUNDAS, Ontario, Sept 18 (Reuters) – With the Canadian election in a dead heat two days before the Sept. 20 vote, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Conservative rival implored supporters to stay the course and avoid vote splitting that could hand their opponent victory.
Both men campaigned in the same seat-rich Toronto region on Saturday as they tried to fend off voter defections to the left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) and the populist People’s Party of Canada (PPC), both of which are rising in polls.
The latest Sondage Leger poll conducted for the Journal de Montreal and the National Post newspapers put the Conservatives one percentage point ahead of Trudeau’s Liberals, with 33% over 32%. The NDP was at 19% while the PPC was at 6%.
Trudeau, 49, called an early election, seeking to convert approval for his government’s handling of the pandemic into a parliamentary majority. But he is now scrambling to save his job, with Canadians questioning the need for an early election amid a fourth pandemic wave.

The People’s Party of Canada does not pull any punches when it comes to climate change.
OUR PLAN
Given the uncertainties over the scientific basis of global warming, and the certainties about the huge costs of measures designed to fight it, there is no compelling reason to jeopardize our prosperity with more government interventions.
A People’s Party government will:
- Withdraw from the Paris Accord and abandon unrealistic greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
- Stop sending billions of dollars to developing countries to help them reduce their emissions.
- Abolish the Liberal government’s carbon tax and leave it to provincial governments to adopt programs to reduce emissions if they want to.
- Abolish subsidies for green technology and let private players develop profitable and efficient alternatives.
- Invest in adaptation strategies if problems arise as a result of any natural climate change.
- Prioritize implementing practical solutions to make Canada’s air, water and soil cleaner, including bringing clean drinking water to remote First Nations communities.

The odds are not in PPC’s favour, with 6% of the vote on latest polls they are being accused of drawing votes away from the Conservatives, potentially handing victory to Trudeau.
But it is not just the Conservatives who have to worry. Trudeau has his own problems with vote splitting, with the left wing New Democratic Party snapping at his heels, making it difficult for him to field a platform broad enough to appeal to soft conservatives.
But with mainstream Canadian Conservatives firmly on the low carbon bandwagon, a vote for PPC might be a real option, if conservatives worried about power bills, fossil fuel jobs or the economy want to send a message to mainstream politicians that they are fed up with being taken for granted.
If voters have had enough of one of the coldest countries on Earth championing the battle against warmer weather, we could see a major upset, in which winning Conservatives have to compromise with a party which does not want to spend even a penny more on useless climate boondoggles.

As a Canadian, I’ve never worked out why the parties insist on making such a fuss about “climate change”. Whenever we’ve had an independent survey of Canada’s 20 most important issues, global warming always came out dead last … so they stopped asking us. Now we’re told what our most important issues are by a bought and paid for media (except for Rebel Media).
Further on that theme … Andrew Weaver, past BC Green Party leader and plaintiff against Tim Ball is now supporting Canada’s own Mr. Dressup – Justin Trudeau, while the federal Green Party is showing a two decade slump in general support.
What does that tell you (apart from the fact that Weaver is still an idiot)?

Patrick Moore is a very impressive man. I lived in Kitsilano from 1970 – ’72, when the Don’t Make a Wave Committee was founded there. For the next few years I was very loosely involved and got to meet all he Greenpeace originals including Bob Hunter, the Bohlens and the Stowes and many others including Moore. We were saving the world. It’s all a haze now.
As for salmon fishing in Winter Harbour, LOL … I logged at Mahata River, Holberg, Port Alice, Port McNeil and Hardy Bay, before I moved up to Juskatla in The Charlottes.Of course that included lots of fishing, salmon and steelhead.

From what I have read in the US, the Conservative Party leader has drunk the climate change KoolAid, and deserves to be spanked for his idiocy.
A strong third (fourth party for Canada) challenge might persuade the Conservatives that their climate change policy was a mistake.
Misreading what their voter base want has been the mainstay of Canadian Conservatives for as long as I can remember. O’Toole didn’t do his homework and it will cost him. Canadians don’t give a crap about “climate change” but we’re too polite to tell the true believers to shut up and go away.

Much of what our party leaders say is affected by our very fractured voter base. Some regions are heavily rural/resource industry and others are so urban/new canadian that they believe milk comes from stores and gas from a pump. The two worlds rarely meet since even the common language uses different definitions for too many words.
We can’t afford any more of Trudeau. And most people outside of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are absolutely fed up with him. He’s a whiny, narcissistic child who called this election 2 years early for the express purpose of stroking his own vanity. And if he wins a minority government, he’s promised to do it all again in 18 months.
My hope is that the Liberals are decimated.
With the big Liberal and Conservative parties facing a minority government whichever one “wins”, the balance of power in Canada is held by the NDP, the New Democratic Party, which is composed of champagne socialists and communists….so even if the Conservatives win, they have to include some of the NDP wishlist in their policy or else are forced out of power. If the Liberals win, they simply make the NDP honorary members of their party and continue spending programs that bankrupt the treasury. It is a negative characteristic of a multi-party system, in that you can be in a rule-by-minority situation.
The other possibility is the bloc holding the balance of power. That’s an interesting scenario. So much for energy east in that scenario mind you.
The only problem of course is if we don’t stop trudeau, (Zoolander II) and his merry band of idjiots NOW, Canada is done. We are on the path to bankruptcy. Our only hope is the PPC holding the balance of power with a conservative minority.
The People’s Party of Canada did well for a new party. It was strongly against climate catastrophism. I have not seen detail results that would indicate whether or not votes for it cost the Conservative Party any seats.
Unlikely the PPC will win a seat.
The bigger problem is taking votes from the conservatives (my hope campaign in the center but govern from the right)

BCs largest export is coal (largest coal export terminal in NA). In a sane world they would be worried about it being shut down. For some reason they dont worry, and nobody seens concerned.

BC’s exports are metallurgical coal. Vast majority of Canada’s thermal coal is located in Alberta. Prime Minister Trudeau has also stopped any new thermal coal mining. However, the 11 million Wyoming/Montana thermal tones leaving Vancouver BC for Asia each yr are not a problem. (& carbon tax free).
Not all of their exports are metallurgical coal

PPC may not even get their leader (Maxim Bernier) elected (yet again!) But their anti vax pass and anti maskmandate message will show how much resistance exists. Not likely to be too much.
It is useful to remember that Bernier was in a race to be the leader of the Conservatives a few years ago. He was defeated by a large group of Quebec farmers joining the party at the last minute to vote against him because of his opposition to the price supports to farmers. Since then, the Conservatives have had two weak tea leaders. O’Toole may win a minority government, but he will be a wishy-washy useless leader. I voted PPC. I hope, but do not expect, that they may win a few seats. It would be good for the country. But with 2/3 of the country typically voting either Liberal, NDP, or Green, we are probably screwed.
I have yet to see anything remotely conservative about O’Toole unless having somewhat more fiscal awareness than soy-boi Justin qualifies him.
I’m beginning to believe that we made a grave error convincing Quebec not to secede from Canada. We’d have our country back and the Trudeau name would just be a bad, distant memory.

Erin o’toole has a novel climate plan limiting levies, and placing levy monies into a personal climate account that one would use for purchases to help … the climate, like an efficient furnace. It’s a shame having to see the right pander to the left over climate nonsense.

The problem, as I see it, is the Trudeau Liberals are masters at the art of nepotism. Far too many careers depend on the Liberals remaining in power. While I would like to see the PPC make a dent in the Canadian political machine, my guess is we will see a minority Conservative government with little policy difference from the Trudeau Liberals.

Trudeau didn’t even get that right. If you’re going to keep control of your MPs, you have to ensure their loyalty. Among other things you have to be able to dole out meaningful punishment. ie. you have to have something you can take away from them if they misbehave. If you promote them to a cabinet post, you have to make sure they’re party hacks willing to play the game.

I’d say you got it backwards. To me it appeared from the start that Wilson-Rayboult was chosen to be the “fall guy” if things went wrong in the government’s plan to get SNC-Lavalin off the hook. She was sharp enough to protect herself, but not courageous enough to do her job as Attorney-General. Instead she tried to mend her bridges by saying that “no crime was committed” of what was a fully documented case of criminal conspiracy to obstruct justice involving the foremost members of cabinet and the top civil servants of the land. She had the support of Peter Mackay, a former Conservative Attorney-General of Canada, but tried instead to “run with the fox and hunt with the hounds”.
Had she done her duty, Trudeau would likely be long gone, and MacKay might well be the leader of the Conservative Party, if not Prime Minister, by now.
Instead we’re left with the shameful memory of several former Supreme Court Justices lining up with their hands out to help justify an indictable offense, and the even more shameful situation of a governing party that believes the end justifies the means, a moral stance that would equally justify the behaviour of Hitler, Stalin and Mao.
So, the gist of it is that as long as Trudeau has a warm place to live and a warm bed to sleep in, and food on HIS plate, everything is just hunky-dory?

Now that this election has proven to be superficially a big nothing, with the Liberals basically just being returned to the same “strong minority” kind of status they had before the election, I’ll mention that the electioneering itself did have a distressing outcome! In the course of this thing, Trudeau managed to make use of his bully pulpit to promise to *mandate*, or make mandatory, the administering of CoVid vaccines, playing successfully to people who are convinced (like Biden) that somehow the current wave of new cases is the fault of the 30 percent or so not yet fully vaccinated.
Not only did Trudeau declare (again, like Biden), that he had “lost patience” with the unvaccinated, he was able to ‘turn’ the last two remaining Western provincial Premiers to this ‘Biden like’ philosphy — if you can call uncorroborated scapegoating a ‘philosophy’. So lots of people are going to get their shots under coercion, such as the threat of job loss, and also, say, being blocked access to entertainment/wellness facilities (like gyms, maybe even libraries and other places, too), if they don’t comply, or so it seems anyway.
It’s a long shot but if the conservatives could get minority with the PPC holding the balance of power, it would be wonderful.
Canada has an average temperature of 0.5C. It is the second coldest country on earth with one of the shortest growing seasons. Only a thin slice of land on the US border can grow vegetables. Canada plants “winter wheat” the growing season is that short.
Only a fool would vote to stop global warming in Canada. Trudeau has no lack or qualification in that department. Drawing on his work experience as a drama teacher in an all girls highschool. Until he was mysteriously led go midterm.
google “trudeau blackface” to see the first black prime minister of Canada. Obama endorsed him the other day, commending on how as a black man Trudeau had been oppressed by white Canada. Further commenting that the only way to end oppression and systemic racism in Canada was to vote a fellow black man like Trudeau into office.
Both Canadian governments and consumers like to talk a good game about taking climate action but neither has shown themselves coming through with results. Ever since Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 no federal government Liberal or Conservative has been able to meet its emissions reductions targets. Meanwhile Canadian citizens have shown little evidence they’re willing to make the serious lifestyle changes needed on their parts to reduce their carbon footprints. So no one should expect any big turnaround regarding attitudes and actions on climate change regardless who’s running the country.

I don’t believe the People’s Party has much of a chance to win any seats, but if they do, it will be from the Conservatives, and end up strengthening the position of the Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois in the next Parliament. But maybe their presence in the campaign will give a boost to the Wexit movement in Alberta.
Trudeau seems to have made a good choice (for himself) in the new Governor General.
She had a historic opportunity to actually justify the position by refusing to allow Trudeau to call the election, and giving the leader of the Opposition (which got the majority of the popular vote in the last election) a mandate to form the government. After all, the majority of Canadians, and all of the opposition parties, were opposed to this early election.
By choosing a suitably tame GG, Trudeau killed two birds with one stone, first to get an election when it was totally unjustifiable, and secondly, to hand indigenous peoples’ aspirations to real power sharing a second strike, following on the former Attorney-General’s failure to bring charges of criminal conspiracy and obstruction of justice against him and his top chronies.
Results are in: ‘Maxime Bernier, the leader of the People’s party of Canada, which has run on on a platform against public health measures like vaccines and masks, and which critics have called xenophobic and racist, failed to win his race, as did all his other candidates.’
The PPC garnered 5% of the popular vote and won exactly zero seats in parliament. They had a flashy campaign and enthusiastic supporters, but in the final tally, it was not enough. Zero seats are zero seats.
I will take exception to your quoted content. The PPC platform was not “against public health measures like vaccines and masks.” They were against vaccine and mask mandates, vaccine passports, etc. It’s a common tactic in politics to accuse your opponent of being sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. even with people of colour as supporters.

Conservative ‘Leader’ Erin O’Fool’s ‘me too’ pitches had the predictable result – voters chose the real thing.
But one tactic in particular may have cost him the election – pandering to Quebec’s oppressive ‘cultural’ laws, which turns off recent immigrants. Conservative loss of seats in Toronto and Vancouver may be evidence of that. (Vancouver BC for example has a large proportion of recent immigrants from China, and relatively recent from the Punjab and Uganda, where they were oppressed, plus persons whose ancestors came from China and Japan long ago. The latter know about oppression from the scandalous and counter-productive internment during WWII, which the Canadian military and police as well as tough reputation J. Edgar Hoover opposed. Their property was seized and not returned after the war.)
The new People’s Party of Canada obtained about 5% of the votes, it communicates very clearly, against climate catastrophism and for freedom but with some bad policies too.
While the Green party’s proportion of the vote declined substantially.
