Almost every mainstream media “news” outlet this week uncritically parroted a joint statement issued on behalf of more than 200 medical journals claiming climate change poses a dire threat to human health.
Had the media checked the facts, they would have found the medical journals’ statement (MJS) was wrong. Data consistently show human health has steadily improved during the recent period of modest warming. Premature deaths from extreme temperatures, extreme weather events, and weather-related illnesses and mosquito borne diseases have declined dramatically, and should continue to do so if earth continues its modest warming trend.
CNN, The New York Times, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo News, and dozens of other national and international mainstream media outlets covered the MJS. The MJS claimed, among other things, that climate change poses the “greatest threat to global public health,” and that unless we keep drastically cut fossil fuel use in the short term to prevent temperatures from rising more than 1.5℃ above preindustrial levels, as Yahoo News wrote, “the continued buildup of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere will lead to ‘catastrophic harm to health that will be impossible to reverse.’”
Data demonstrate the MJS is nothing more nor less than climate change alarmism coupled with medical malpractice.
The most recent report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, AR6, finds limited evidence that incidences of extreme weather events, for instance, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, droughts, extreme winter weather, etc,, have increased in number or become more severe. Although the weather isn’t worsening, global infrastructure, medical interventions, food availability, and technology, have improved dramatically along with wealth, amidst the recent modest warming. As a result, deaths resulting from climate related events have fallen to a historic low, declining by more than 99 percent over the past 100 years.
Concerning temperature related health events and premature mortality, in July The Lancet published what is arguably the largest study ever to examine excess mortality associated with temperature. The study’s authors, 68 scientists representing universities and research institutes in 33 countries spanning all regions of the world, came to two clear conclusions: cold temperatures contribute to far more deaths each year than warmer temperatures, and deaths associated with extreme temperatures, hot or cold, are declining.
This study confirms what research previously published in The Lancet, the Southern Medical Journal, and other outlets, has consistently shown, the number of deaths related to extreme temperatures is falling dramatically.
Also, contrary to the impression given by the MJS, the vast body of scientific literature referenced in Chapter Seven of Climate Change Reconsidered II: Biological Impacts and Chapter Four of Climate Change Reconsidered II: Fossil Fuels demonstrates global warming is not causing the spread of Lyme disease, malaria, Dengue fever, West Nile virus, and other vector-borne diseases.
Another climate related factor contributing to improved human health is the fact that food availability has improved dramatically during the period of modest global warming.
Data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) show that crop production and yields are consistently growing and setting new records almost every year. Indeed, the FAO’s recent “Cereal Supply and Demand Brief” reports new global records are being set nearly every year for production of the cereal crops (corn, wheat, rice, and similar crop staples) that comprise most of global food consumption, with the increase in food production being widespread, increasing in developed countries and developing countries and in temperate and warmer regions alike,
Modestly warming temperatures and increased carbon dioxide concentrations have stimulated a greening of the earth that has enormously benefited agriculture. As agronomy and botany explain, the addition of approximately 135 parts per million of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by humans has helped dramatically reduce hunger, by increasing the photosynthetic productivity and improving the water use of plants. As a result, the number of hungry people has declined by two billion since 1990 and there is now 17 percent more food available per person than there was 30 years ago.
Medical journals should not spread climate fear as a means of gaining political influence for medical practitioners. If they really want to promote public health, especially the mental health of their readers, medical journals should quit opining in the areas of climate science, economics, and policy—areas of study about which the vast majority of their contributors, editors, and publishers have no particular expertise.
Climate model simulations may project a human health crisis if the earth continues to warm modestly. Real world data demonstrate those simulations are mistaken, grounded not in evidence but in demonstrably flawed climate models.

This MJS is outrageous. This is actual licensed and practicing physicians who are allowing journals to make these claims? Whatever happened to “First do no harm.”? Any way we can get a list of the signatories to this statement? These are definitely physicians to avoid in the future. If they are too stupid to realize that they just endorsed some of the worst science around they are too stupid to competently care for a patient.

That’s good news, and a bare-minimum start. They are doing what they are doing; what are we going to do (if anything) out here in the trenches? Depending on the immediate consequences, evasion of participation can be followed by challenging whatever perps are in our faces, followed by a personal look deep into their eyes and asking them why they have sold out (and not accepting their “I am just following orders” or “It’s The Science(tm)” excuses. Medical doctors are literally mechanics for humans. They’re blue-collar workers that we elevate to white-collar gods because of what they work on.
Medical doctors are tradesmen – they are NOT scientists. They read the latest technical bulletins (journals), consult the service manuals (guidance documents) and render service (treatment).
Are they highly educated? Sure! Are they scientists, trained and regularly engaged in the guess/test/evaluate cycle and let new data guide them? Nope. No more so than the local mechanic down at the BMW dealer, as compared to the engineer who designed the car.
They are akin to tradesmen, like electricians, mechanics, and bricklayers.
It also explains why they have a “guild” (union) to protect their hallowed ranks…

Sorry. I just repeated your comment here, inadvertantly, in one of my own. Your are absolutely correct.
It is my experience that doctors are good at the mechanical things like setting a broken bone or suturing a wound. However, when it comes to less obvious maladies, while they usually have a name for it, it is less common that they have an unequivocal treatment. Commonly, I hear something along the line of “Try using this (expensive!) ointment, and if it doesn’t work, come back and we’ll try something else.”
Yes, no argument from me. And like with all gifted mechanics, some have an innate ability to detect and diagnose ailments by paying attention to tiny clues. Unfortunately, they have always been afforded high status, whether they are deserving of it or not.
There are a lot of mediocre mechanics in the world and the same goes for doctors. The one who barely manages to graduate at the bottom of the class is still allowed to practice on humans and their “guild” is averse to disciplining its members unless something they can’t ignore happens.
I don’t know what medical education is like where you come from but my doctors seem to be quite good at what they do. Surgeons are somewhat like mechanics but they are also engineering to some extent on every patient, otherwise our medical procedures would not be where they are now. A mechanic just replaces parts, they do not have a unique situation to work on with every vehicle. You expect to come into a doctor’s office, list a few symptoms, most of which are irrelevant, and then get an expert diagnosis. I think if you gave all the relevant data you would find your doctors really are good at diagnoses. Your worship of “scientists” seems a bit out of place. How many PhDs graduate every year and how many of them actually make any reasonable contribution to human knowledge?
They should stick to the areas they are licensed to practice and avoid political involvement in climate change and gun control. If they don’t, people just might get concerned about their general judgement and competence.

Bioscience is full of crisis papers, always some truth in there somewhere, but very much like the climate papers. Some papers are still decent. I was told in graduate school, before Ehrlich and the first renewable energy failure, that when the quantity (of papers) would go up the quality would go down. Some journals brag about the rapidity of publication along with “impact factors” and other advertisements. Advocacy is way out of hand even some among good biologists I know. Restoration!!
There are still good doctors, two, as close as possible, nailed this for me last year, including Nursing homes and vitamin D. They don’t preach, point fingers, but admit the uncertainty and don’t hide the problems. One even consulted a reference in my presence about something else.

I feel deeply sorry to see dozens, hundreds of colleagues who could make good contributions to several fields of biology having chosen to play as sorcerer’s apprentices and speak/publish about “climate change” etc., matters of which they have not studied, learned and practiced.
My trust in the medical establishment has been destroyed in the last 18 months. Oh, I trust my doctor who I can interact with face-to-face and question face-to-face. But my trust in the US Centers for Disease Control, the US National Institute of Health, and the US Food and Drug Administration has not only been destroyed is now gone. The only time I will ever trust them again is when they publish something that runs counter to the narrative. My trust in hospitals is gone. My view of Big Pharma was slightly-negative in 2019. Today, it is outright hatred.
The last 18 months have opened my eyes. Health care is not about our health. It is about money. US hospitals lost billions when non-essential surgery was delayed. And since they are a business, and a business must make money, they were complicit in keeping the panic alive. I know 4 people who died at my local hospital — one of sepsis and did not have COVID, two died of heart attacks and had the COVID antibodies, and one died in a skydiving accident with COVID antibodies. If hospitals really cared about your health, they would give people unprofitable ivermectin or unprofitable hydroxchloroquine. Instead, they lie and would rather a person die because it is more profitable and politically sound.
This article just confirms that healthcare is not about making people well. Not anymore. It is about money and power. The medical journals want a piece of the money and power pie. It is very sad that people are so selfish and care so very little about people. It is abhorrent when people whose job it is to be unselfish and care about others before yourself, such as those in healthcare, do this.

Anyway, it’s not just about a massive payoff ($70/shot) to the Medical Pharma Complex; it’s about conditioning people to accept a digital passport (vaccine card – tied to a database) to go about your lives.
The powers that be know that we’d never accept an implementation of China’s “Social Credit” score, where saying the wrong things can get you banned from travel, banking, telecommunications, even buying groceries.
Getting a vaccine card instead, that needs to be used to go nearly anywhere, is the next best thing. It’s for your ‘safety’ – and effectively restricts you to do what the Government would like. A touch of a button and – oops, it was a clerical mistake – you’re banned for a week or two from any store, or from buying anything.
And don’t think cash will be the fallback! Buying online? It’s all electronic – and that’s easy to stop. More and more stores are going cashless in a “it’s cleaner for you” push from their regulators (OSHA and more), so that you HAVE to pay electronically.
The end-game? You cannot go anywhere, cannot engage in trade, cannot accept or pay a dime without Government knowing and approving. You shake the cage too hard? Sorry, must have been a glitch, we’ll get it fixed in a month or so, in the mean time you cannot do anything buy anything, lose your housing (no utilities, since you cannot pay – that’s now a health violation as well, out you go!), and are rendered an effective “undesirable”.
Of course, there are these nice Government “support centers” of communal housing, cafeterias, and support. They’re just over the next hill, just past the barb-wire and the fences…
Yes! Everyone is saying “vaccines are expensive compared to the unit production price” or “many billions $ for Big Pharma”… but it’s almost small change compared to the many (probably useless) “prevention” drugs they make.

This MJS was obviously written by an outsider to the practice of medicine or medical research. It is a slight restatement (to make it sound vaguely medical) of the same alarmist tripe we hear and read every day. It is a betrayal of the profession. Practicing physicians and researchers need access to reliable journals reporting on advances in medical science and practice, but such a collapse of integrity by the editors casts everything they publish under a shadow of suspicion.

There is researcher at a conservative think tank (sorry don’t have a reference at my fingertips) that thinks that all this is an effort to link “Pubic Health” to Climate Change.
He proposes that bureaucrats noticed how easily it was to get Americans to give up their freedoms, if the action was posed as a needed public health measure to combat COVID19. And how easy it was for a small government bureaucracy (the CDC) to impose these rules on the whole country.
His contention is that the climate change bureaucrats realized they could do the same as the CDC, if they could link public health and climate change, as pubic health and COVID19 had been linked. He thinks that is the purpose of the new Office of Climate Change and Health Equity within the Dept. of Health and Human Services.
The alarmists are always going on and on about how some people’s opinions MUST be ignored, because they don’t have the proper credentials in climate science.
I guess that restriction only applies when the opinion disagrees with the alarmists opinion.

People often rank medicine among the most “scientific” of jobs; and some of this misjudgement is because medical practitioners look scientific in their white coats, etc. In other words it is a judgement based on superficial stereotypes. But medicine as practiced is a lot more like an exceptionally complex form of automotive mechanics. Get someone who is a fellow of the college of surgeons a little ways outside his or her specialties, and they are surprisingly ignorant — even answering medical questions. Just more evidence of the cognitive frailties of human beings.
Good news doesn’t sell coercive, parasitic politics. The truth would put so many politicians, subsidy seekers, and academics out of work, it must not be allowed to see the light of day. As a physician, I see this as the equivalent of hiding or censoring a new cure for cancer because it would damage the bottom line of drug companies and health care providers. This assumption is an extrapolation from plant yield eCO2 experiments and offers no context for agricultures’ increasing use of nitrogen.
RUBISCO , where CO2 is used, can bind to either magnesium Mg2+ or manganese Mn2+ and get working. Almost all eCO2 experiments have been considering Mg2+ as “given” factor & many reports have come along with opinions that eCO2 results are integrated with nitrogen.
In a C3 plant (wheat) under eCO2 conditions if the nitrogen plants use is nitrate nitrogen (and not ammonium nitrogen) their leaves favor bringing Mn2+ into use. Relative to Mg2+ the usage by RUBISCO of more Mn2+ is less effective at using carbon from CO2 (& Mn2+, unlike Mg2+, having 5 unpaired electrons can get oxidized to Mn3+ which then can not bind to RUBISCO’s catalytic site).
One issue is how much of eCO2 influence on global crop yields is due to whether farmers are fertilizing, or not at all, with either ammonium or nitrate. Another is whether the global yield bump is proportionate in large regions of soil where cadmium is; since cadmium (& chromium) bind to RUBISCO causing a loss of activity.
You should all take this more seriously. I just went in to see my doctor, for a persistent non-productive cough, and a PCR test was taken.
After 24 hours, they called me back and said that I had a viral infection, caused by a new type of virus: CAGW-21.
Right now, there are no vaccines available for CAGW-21, so they recommended that I reduce the ambient air temperature in my home and put on a sweater, consume less red meat and consider walking to work, once I feel better.
So, my advice to everyone, if you get a PCR test, make sure you check the diagnostic form, in the “pathogens present” section, for CAGW-21.

Medicine is not science, it is an art. It can never be a science for two reasons:
1) No two people are exactly identical, therefore there can never be a control group.
2) Any attempt to study a pseudo control group would have to include denying all treatment for the studied illness, which is unethical.
All medical studies are statistical correlations of results which can never be offered as proof of function because a control group cannot be held constant.
You pay your money and you take your chances. That’s why they call it medical opinion.
Control groups can also be given the traditional remedies for an illness.
There are more quacks in those journals than in the San Andreas Fault.

Thus, they can misinform as much as they want without being concerned that they will be challenged by any of their readers. Fortunately, there are outlets such as WUWT. However, not everyone who goes looking for general news knows about this forum.

I quit reading any article that does not allow commenting. Often the comments have more content than the article. In many cases the commenters have more knowledge, certainly better than the reporter, and often the actual source.

Just guessing without proof: the closer that doctors get to “specialties”, the more likely they are to buy in to and amplify the agw myth. Scare is the specialists’ bread and butter. At the same time, they can “fix” whatever ails a human because they’re, well, special.

Wow, that’s big! Increases in CO2 over the past 30 years have fed billions more people. And if you add to that the finding that climate related events have caused over 99 percent fewer deaths over the past 100 years, it just goes to show that more CO2 saves lives. What’s not to love about a little more CO2 in the atmosphere?
