COP26 And Carbon Imperialism: A Showdown Looming

Energy
I analyze energy economics and related public policy issues.

By the first quarter of the 19th century, a small corner of north-western Europe had conquered much of the rest of the world on the back of gunpowder, the sailing ship and an evangelizing view of the world which served both God and commerce. Two centuries later, we see a new force at work, aiming for the re-conquest of the world by the Western nations, this time with a powerful new entrant, the United States of America. The West’s weapons of war are as novel as is the ideology of conquest: gunpowder has been replaced by domination of powerful international institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that include global finance as part of their arsenal, and an evangelizing ideology that views the trace gas COas original sin. The aim of the West is of course not to directly rule the world for plunder or prestige, but to get the East to agree on foregoing the fruits of modern economic growth to “save the planet”.

Shapeshifting Environmentalism

To be sure, none of this is very new. The early convocations of nations in the aftermath of World War II, perhaps best marked by the Stockholm conference on the environment in 1972, were devoted to  discussions of a new brotherhood of nations that would learn to live at peace not only with one another (the Cold War was still a dominating reality then) but also with “nature”. A new Rousseauesque angst had captured the minds of the ruling intellectual elites in the West, perhaps best personified by Joschka Fischer, a left-wing activist and part of the 1968 “beat generation” who later became Germany’s first Green member of parliament in 1985. This angst needed to be shared with the world. It did not matter very much that some in the East like the indomitable Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, proclaimed at the 1972 Stockholm conference that the environmental problem of the teeming multitudes of East was one of poverty not affluence.

It did not take long for this angst to shapeshift. The original fears of “running out” of natural resources —as the Club of Rome, an international elite of experts, had predicted — or of over-population as warned by serial predictors of global famines and cataclysm such as Paul Ehrlich are history. By the 1980s and 1990s it had become apparent that human ingenuity and the relentless march of technology had consigned the Malthusian thesis to the dust-heap of history. The world had continuously increasing reserves of minerals and fossil fuels despite galloping consumption. The US shale revolution found more oil and gas than the world could possibly absorb. The maverick one-term president Donald J. Trump proclaimed “energy dominance” for a country that conventional wisdom had expected to be an energy supplicant to Saudi Arabia, Russia and other oil and gas producers of the world.

An Increasingly Prosperous World

And far from fearing over-population, countries such as China are much more worried about the demography and geopolitics of “growing old before becoming rich”. Indeed, by late-20th century, demographers were already warning of all the problems associated with an impending decline of a youthful population that could sustain global living standards. While mystical believers of Gaia worried of the weight of a global population on “nature”, statistics of human welfare kept breaking historical records as never before. With respect to human welfare, virtually every metric or indicator shows significant if not dramatic improvement: life expectancy and income levels have improved; poverty levels have declined; people are living longer and healthier lives and the World Bank’s human development index has advanced virtually everywhere (ignoring the blip caused by the covid pandemic since 2020).

Since the 1920s, the global death rate from extreme weather events, for instance, has fallen by 98% despite the tripling of the world’s population. Average global life expectancy at birth in 1850 was just over 29 years; a century later it was over 45 years, and in 2019, it was almost 73 years. In 1820, almost 90% of the global population lived in absolute poverty. By 2015, this had dropped to less than 10% despite a sevenfold increase in world population.MORE FOR YOUA Decade In Development, Liquid-Metal Batteries By Ambri May Soon Change The Energy Storage GameNot Cooking With Gas: Phase-out Mandates Ignore Economics of Energy TransitionGasoline And Gas Prices Give Biden Headaches In His Green New Deal Push

Carbon Imperialism To Save the World

Yet, the up-coming UN conference on climate in Glasgow is all fire-and-brimstone. With the “climate emergency” upon us, Alok Sharma — president of the UN’s “COP26” summit to be held in Glasgow in November – warns us that this is the “last chance” to agree to a radical agenda of “decarbonization” failing which the world inevitably consigns itself to climate catastrophe (never mind that this is all based on dubious “hockey-stick” global warming models concocted in the West). The UN Secretary-General António Guterres warns us that it is nothing less than “a code red for humanity. The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable”.

And here is where the West’s ambit at a moral carbon imperialism is upon us in the East:

Be prepared to give up cheap and affordable fossil fuels that help your people achieve higher standards of living or else the planet, with all of us in it, gets it. Yes, we promise you money (we know, the last promise was $100 billion per annum, though not yet attained). But there is more, we promise you. We all understand you cannot possibly expect European standards of living but new energy technologies are around the corner, trust us. With solar and wind power, and electric vehicles, and hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration, we will get there. But stop new coal power plants right now and oil and gas too. We are all in this together.

“History never repeats itself but it rhymes,” said Mark Twain. Now however there is nothing short of massive discordance. China, the world’s largest carbon sinner by far, has “promised” net zero by 2060. Sinner or not, it has quite clearly stated that it might consider participating in the western notion of buying Gaia’s indulgences with decarbonization, perhaps, some decades into the future, but only if the US plays ball: give up the endless tirades about Uigher oppression, consider Taiwan as part of China and stop being an aggressive competitor to the Middle Kingdom’s natural quest for Asian dominance. India, on its part, is also quite clear: “we urge G20 countries to commit to bring down per capita emissions to the global average by 2030”. In other words, you come down to not quite our levels of poverty, and give us space to become not quite as rich as you. And then we have the outliers: Australia has said quite clearly “no” to Biden, Boris and the UN in their requests that coal extraction, coal power and coal exports should stop.

The days of China being “carved up like a ripe melon” by the western powers or of the dissipated Mughals in India being easily replaced by the East India Company as overlords of the subcontinent are long gone. Australia, the ex-colony of convicts, is no pushover either. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, host of COP26, while not entertaining imperial notions of conquest and rule, wants his environmental place in the sun. But he is bound to be disappointed. Carbon imperialism will not work.Follow me on TwitterTilak Doshi

Let ‘s not forget that the mentioned Joschka Fischer and his green party had already been trying to fool people into an exclusiv scam to specifically scare german people = Tree Dying.
This doom scenario was pushed massively on German people during the 1980ies .
But It was such a illogical nonsense that even I as a child knew it’s a lie
as the crazy claim was that only german trees were dying but not single of the 11 neighboring countries had this problem.

Off course all sorts of the usual parasites(journalists,do gooders, scientists, lawyers and eternal students who turned into politicians) tried to participate in the scam but they simply couldn’t gain traction and it disappeared like a bad dream.

On the other side the scammers learned a lot from their failure as they realized that they need a more international approach and that they need far more years of brainwashing to succeed.

After many years of court appeals resulting from leftist activists attempting to overturn development and operation of a huge high quality coal mine in Queensland, Adani a company from India is the owner, coal is now being mined for export to India.

The Adani Mine is expected to produce coal for many decades to come supplying India with supplies of coal for power stations needed to provide then many districts of India now with little or no electricity.

According to the IEA’s ‘India Energy Outlook 2021’ coal provides around 70% of India’s power generation but is expected under the STEPS (Stated Policies option) to fall to 34.3% by 2040.

Over the same period solar is expected to rise from 4% to 31.4% – so yes a large rise in solar.

However India’s CO2 emissions are also expected to rise by 50% by 2040, the largest of any country in the STEPS. This increase is enough to offset entirely the projected fall in emissions in Europe over the same period

As for Imperialism, have a look at this brand new musical production (set to Gilbert and Sullivan) :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrohYCF6qOU&list=PLj0FZrNhe5vPExN9WxqX3gSdk–__82NS&index=230&t=128s

One will recognize the red uniform (East Indie Company), what? Note the admiration of the onlookers!

That imperial power used heroin to subjugate China, and China has not forgotten – they announced the limitation of 3 hours per week for kids on computer games, the modern drug. Aside – the Afghanistan debacle promoted heroin production in Helmand under NATO British control, after the Taliban actually had stopped it. The market being Russia, USA, EU.
The remnant of that imperial west, pursues legalized drugs and unlimited youth online gaming, and of course modern climate modelling to prove CO2 means we must submit…

Quite funny. However, this comes from the LaRouche Org., an organization that promotes, amongst other things, colonizing Mars, building a MagLev train from China to Europe, and changing the pitch in music from A=440 Hz to A=432 Hz,

Being as A used to be close to 432hz until they started heating concert halls in Germany, I can’t think of anything more stupid than having to retune everything back again, now they optimised Steinway pianos to work best around 442hz.
(loud and brilliant).

Reply to  pigs_in_space

The high tuning was ordered at the sexual Congress of Vienna in 1815, where each visiting dignatorie’s dorm was adorned with working women. To impose the military marching tuning on classical music was really a decision at the bordello.
One wonders how many other such decisions were taken at such ¨resort islands” – ask Prince Andrew!

Reply to  bonbon

that’s a stupid explanation.

Anyone will tell you the pitch of wind instruments is entirely dependent (like the speed of sound) on temperature.
Organs are wind instruments.

https://www.esteypiano.com/the-history-of-a440/

states:-

the French set the standard pitch
at A-435, they did so at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius (59
degrees Fahrenheit) and that was too low for steam heated concert
halls. Theodore Thomas as far back as 1883, ordered his concert halls
to be kept at a temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, or as near to
that as possible. Deagan continues: "Wind instruments tuned to A-435
at 59 degrees Fahrenheit will raise in pitch to A-440 at 72 degrees
Fahrenheit."

The United States officially adopted A-440 as standard pitch in 1920,

Music and pitch register are now a function of climate warming?

In 1815 the Russian military band tuning was imposed.
Verdi led the effort to reverse that. Even today it is a very big deal among well known singers.

Whilst it’s true that CO2 is not a pollutant, it is associated with pollutants during the burning fossil fuels for energy

The problem is, that removing the pollutants with ‘state-of-the-art’ emissions controls, adds to the cost of the energy, which is why both China and India have serious atmospheric pollution problems in their cities, which affect people’s health.

One might assume that the problem could be solved if all governments were to enforce strict regulations regarding emissions controls on all fossil fuel plants and vehicles. Unfortunately, corruption is prevalent in many countries, and there is some corruption in all countries. Even the German company, Volkswagen, cheated on the emission controls of its vehicles some time ago.

Try this from Eric Peters:

“And still, no one in the industry will say what needs to be said. That Uncle has made it impossible to sell affordable diesels by imposing tailpipe emissions standards – and tests – that are unreasonable and which cannot be complied with without watering down the main reasons most people consider buying a diesel-powered car.”

It does not take a rocket scientist to ask what about the entire cell phone ecology of all major industrial firms, especially top management?
This has cost billions. Of course industrial firms have secrets, or at least used to.

I have posted a comment similar to this one in a previous recent posting, and permit me to say this again:

Without knowing it, the govts of the West might arguably be laying the early groundwork for their own decline fall with these “Save the Planet” and fossil fuel (carbon) demonizing narratives (or religions if you will). If this is so, it is nothing new in the history of human civilization.

With their embrace of bad/disputable science in the areas of energy and climate, the West found the religious narratives to self-destruct. Straddling the fence between fossil fuels and economic growth on one hand and pandering to the “green left” on the other appears to be the policy of Western govts at the moment. Sooner or later however, one might suspect that the climate alarmists crocodiles will want to eat the appeasers who who have been feeding them.
Extinction Rebellion in the UK is already attempting to do something of this nature with its protests that are designed to shut down London.

With the IMF and World Bank denying money for fossil-fuel based economic growth in the Third World, this new religion of the West is already taking on the characteristics of colonialism and imperialism that resembles Europe’s colonization of much of the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. I have heard it said that, for the Third World, environmental protections can come only AFTER basic human needs have been met. The West’s new anti-carbon religion seems to have tossed that idea out the window among western thinkers, leaving the 3rd World poor condemned to permanent poverty, especially in Africa.

I hope I am being excessively gloomy here, but we will have to wait and see where all of this ends up. Those COP(OUT) conferences are getting to be a joke — a bad one. MARK MY WORDS: Fossil fuels will only go away when new and suitable energy-generation technologies come into use to replace them. I don’t know when that will be, but I suspect it is a long ways off.

It seems inevitable that success leads to failure. The democratic west solved all of it’s existential problems, became wealthy and healthy, and has now had a coupe of generations of comfort and prosperity, free of major threats. Now we are fixated on imaginary threats that, in the passage of time, prove ephemeral. One by one these hobgoblins disappear in the light of day but still, two generations raised without real strife, and having learned nothing about critical thinking and decision-making, fixate on the next fad threat and now try to pull the rest of the world along in their social-economic suicide pact. The rest won’t follow because they have real issues and rightly see the wealthy west as a threat to their own success. We will get what we deserve if we don’t catch on. CAGW is just another unscientific, unsubstantiated bogey man that some believe out of ignorance, and some promote out of avarice. It won’t survive the passage of time or even a small amount of critical thought.

It is ironic and demonstrably true that as societies are unburdened of the privations that allow people to live in greater health, safety, wealth, and leisure they soon forget what it took to arrive at their enviable status and begin to tear down the culture, institutions, technology, and sacrifices made by others that facilitated their success. Apathy and ingratitude breeds ignorance and contempt. Elevating the hedonistic pursuit of pleasure and amusement over sacrifice and self-discipline lies at the root of this inadvertent backward turn to self-destruction. Morality matters and its effects spread far beyond ourselves.

and you ignore the economics of developing countries trying to import oil, gas or coal when they have none or not enough within their borders…

Perhaps you need to read about the example of Dharnai, a small village in India which did not want fake Greenpeace electricity (solar) but real grid (coal) electricity 24/7.

Personally, I believe that the British PM deserves his place in the sun. The only issue is how deep to put him and how quickly he would burn!

This is the best article I have ever read on the issue of what I call energy apartheid being waged by the elitist west against poor countries. they are seeking to deny a better life undet the guise of “saving the planet.” This is a crime against humanity.

This book by Alex Epstein beautifully expands on the themes in this piece, please read it cover to cover and send the link to the free copy to your family and friends. I hope Mr. Doshi can get in touch with Alex and join forces with him.
