New report suggests corporate climate change pledges aren’t that valuable

Many S&P 100 companies that claim to care about climate change are either ignoring or derailing policies that could provide solutions to the crisis, a new report finds. A whopping 92 percent of companies on the S&P 100 index in 2019 have pledged to cut down their own planet-heating emissions, but just 40 percent are actually pushing lawmakers to address the climate crisis, and 21 percent have advocated against science-based climate policy over the past five years.
So while companies might sell themselves to consumers as planet-friendly, they’re not necessarily having the same conversations with decision-makers who are most responsible for tackling the crisis. Netflix, for example, plans to slash its greenhouse gases dramatically by the end of next year, but the streaming giant has yet to publicly advocate for any specific science-based climate policies, according to Ceres.

Other companies are guilty of climate inaction by association, according to the report. About three-quarters of S&P 100 companies are members of the US Chamber of Commerce, which Ceres says “has long resisted the policies the nation needs to make its economy more sustainable.” Apple is the only company Ceres assessed that abandoned the chamber over its position on climate change.

I’m not sure why Apple qualifies as being an example of corporate virtue. Back in 2019 they were accused of rigging their supplier complaints process to make it inaccessible to exploited African children labouring in atrocious conditions, to provide the raw materials for building new Apple products.
But perhaps I am being unfair. No doubt Apple by now have advocates on the ground in Congo and other exploitation hotspots like Xinjiang in China, to ensure nothing Apple sells is tainted by forced labour, child labour or products derived from fossil fuel.
So which science-based policies are we discussing here? Maybe I can pressure my reps to support some of them.
What crisis?
….. and who’s tackling the non-existent crisis? Even the doom goblin, although she don’t quite get the non-existent part, sees through the upper middle class, and senile people pretense to be doing something about it other than whining and pretending to wet the bed, as they get paid by the taxpayer. I suspect they don’t even know they’re doing it. They’ve never actually known doing anything but whining, let alone something as impossible as getting CO2 down to Little Ice Age levels.
Can we make a deal with these people, that they get paid the same salary to just stay home, go for walks and not go near computers and, if they do, and they type the word “climate”, an on-site minimum wage person with a cattle prod can fix it immediately?
I think we’ll need to be more subtle than that. They “need” to feel that they’re “helping,” so we’ll need to provide them with what is effectively a rubber room while hiding the fact from them.
The funding crisis. The climate scientists have a lifestyle to protect.
Eric, Apple is a figure of virture because Apple says so. They also say that displaying their virture isn’t at all marketing, and that Steve Jobs was a genius and a saviour. Shame on you for bringing up child labor and third world pollution. (I suppose the /sarc tag is obigatory, now)

Isn’t warming like climate models predicted.
Sea level rise isn’t accelerating.
Arctic ice hasn’t disappeared.
Polar bears are thriving.
All the past alarmist predictions have proved false.
Meaningful penetration of renewables into the grid is a disaster.
Every year it gets tougher for the alarmists to avoid deserved ridicule.
Don’t forget: “Renewables” completely depend on fossil fuels.
Have they redefined “renewables” to that hydro or burning wood don’t qualify?

Just Wow. Not enough that a company like Netflix has actually put plans in place to reduce emissions (and cut their electric bill too of course) but they get failing marks because they aren’t actively ‘advocating’ for climate cult policies – I thought they were a streaming service and movie producer, I guess the article writer knows better and everyone has to be an active Climate Witness or Moonie, out there pushing the cause and drumming up more
victimssupporters.It is all sounding very communist at the moment. Guilt by association, failing to support the policies of the “new soviet” sufficiently enthusiastically, failing to adequately denounce the “deniers”.
Soon enough these people will start having speeches where the crowd will clap endlessly as no one wants to be the first to stop clapping. They will continue to think they are virtuous as they mindlessly slaughter much of the population of the world. Outwardly, they will proclaim their virtue, while actually being driven by narcissism, envy and hatred.

PC that seems to be the standard anymore. A company isn’t allowed to just do its business, it MUST ACTIVELY advocate for political positions or it’s evil. (But only the “approved” positions)
The Alarmists are going full retard-nazi-commie, they’ve been listening to the echoes of their own lies for so long that they think it’s God own truth, and will do anything to enforce it. Scary times ahead – they won’t listen to reason or true science.
I don’t want to hope for the expected downward cycle in world temps that most sensible people expect (based on the temp patterns for the last century or so) because I know the cold will hurt a lot of people and humanity has been doing great these past few decades under gently warming conditions but I fear unless there is a protracted cold period the Clime-unists will outdo Mao and Pol Pot in the amount of deaths caused by government stupidity in enforcing adherence to the Climate Insanity.
Ridicule them enough and all but the fanatics will move on to next week’s phony emergency.
So…. Actually doing something us not good enough for you, Netflix must badger others into doing something, and presumably that ‘doing something’ involves more taxes and government control, not actually ‘doing something’ at all.
It’s all so obviously a socialist agenda bolted onto a call to ‘save the planet’. And you wonder why we are ignoring you?
How long until they’re expected to make a public appology? Maybe from their CEO with a crude, hand-written sign hung around his neck? Much bowing and scraping to show contrition.

Interestingly, Netflix is not part of the S & P 100.

The Chamber of Commerce is all in for green new deal as long as it comes with government subsidizes to provide them with a guaranteed profit.
Re Apple. Apple’s support for slavery in the Congo and China has little to do with climate change. It’s on another level altogether.
Maybe the Chamber of Commerce forced Apple to resign because of it’s hypocrisy?

Good. The sooner the membership of the Chamber of Crony Capitalism realize that virtue signaling isn’t going to protect them from the Left, the better.
With the Climate Cabal, aka “GangGreen”, we are all Guilty. Some more than others. It is our Original Climate Sin. But businesses are Guilty a thousandfold, and must continually “prove” their innocence. They are Climate Pariahs. The lowest of the low, but there is an even lower rung. Woe betide any business peddling in, or even appearing to, the dreaded, evil Fossil Fuels. They are the backbone of our economy and are why we have a high standard of living, but never mind.
Reads like whining and complaining about large corporations not cooperating by not supporting a fraud. Of course their interests, the whiners, are not at stake, or are they and they don’t know it yet.

By definition, anything from the Verge is childish nonsense.
Where I live, the city’s Chamber of Commerce has exactly one condition of membership: to join, you must agree to support the county’s General Plan (the product of its urban planning agencies).
So in a real sense, CoC membership *does* make one part of the problem, though not in a way The Verge would recognize.
