Global Warming To Threaten Wimbledon

Reposted from Not A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

The Met Office have this ridiculous article on their website today, called “Increasing climate challenge to Wimbledon Championships”:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/press-office/news/weather-and-climate/2021/wimbledon-environment-day

It makes the usual claims of how global warming will impact sports like tennis:

Professor Stephen Belcher, the Met Office’s chief scientist, commented: “All the available evidence points towards the fact that our climate is changing: we have already seen aspects such as extreme heat, and the worse is yet to come.

“The UK has not recorded temperatures of more than 38.7 °C. However, our climate projections show temperatures of 40.0 °C or more are possible at Wimbledon even during future tournaments, posing considerable challenges for the health of players and spectators. Climate change will affect every facet of our lives, including the sports we love to watch. Wimbledon Environment Day is a reminder that society has very little time left to keep the temperature of our atmosphere within sustainable limits.”

A rather fatuous statement, given that tennis is already played in much hotter conditions than Wimbledon around the world, without health problems. Indeed most players I suspect would rather be somewhere else on a cold, damp day on Court 14!

But as the Met Office’s own data shows, UK summers are not actually getting hotter:

Occasionally weather conditions bring hot summers, as in 1976 and 2018, but the former still remains the hottest. In other years, we may see cold, wet summers.

But there is a reason why no summer since has topped 1976, the sun.

It is the sun that regulates temperatures in summer, not CO2. For instance, summers are hotter in Paris than London, because the sun is higher in the sky. A long, dry summer, dominated by high pressure, will always bring hot weather.

Occasionally the jet stream will also pull up very hot air from the Sahara, as in 2019, but this a short term meteorological occurrence, typically for a day or two, not evidence of climate change.

Unless the Earth shifts on its orbit, UK summers will be unlikely to top 1976 temperatures in our lifetimes.

It is shameful that the Met Office should give its name to this pernicious, politically motivated propaganda

Griff, did you actually read the original study which the Guardian was referring to? The Guardian didn’t actually say what the ratio was of cold to heat related deaths. The original study said that cold related deaths outnumbered heat related deaths by a factor of 10 to 1.

According to a Lancet study:

“The study — published in the British journal The Lancet — analyzed data on more than 74 million deaths in 13 countries between 1985 and 2012. Of those, 5.4 million deaths were related to cold, while 311,000 were related to heat.”

In addition to revealing that cold is more dangerous than heat, the study showed that fewer people died from “extreme temperatures” in 2019 than there were in 2000. The data shows any recent climate change to be beneficial.

The Lancet study showed that fewer than 1% died from extreme temperatures. People prepare for and observe caution during extremes. It’s the other times that catch them off guard and unprepared.

The data shows any recent climate change to be beneficial.

So does the science. It’s basic meteorology. Storms are created by temperature differentials caused by cooling in the temperate zones. We have warming in the temperate zones, reducing the cause of storms.

Stories such as this are laughable and the vast majority of average Joes know it. They’re not stupid and when the reality of what would be needed to hit net-zero is fully out in the open they’ll make their views very firmly understood through the ballot box. This is why it’s highly unlikely the UK will get anywhere close to what the politicians are promising — it’s amazing how quickly politicians can change their minds when votes are at stake.

It’s extremely sad that science has been reduced to politics but that’s what is now happening. Joe Public will see right through this. It’s fine for the left-wing Metropolitan elite in their expensive city homes but what’s being proposed by the man-made climate change brigade will hit the poorest very hard. Joe Public won’t stand for it, just as they didn’t when the same people tried to defy Brexit.

Griff – In the north east wheatbelt of Western Australia we often play cricket when it’s 42 degrees + celsius. Admittedly it’s a bit on the warm side, but a cold beer afterwards (or even between innings) works wonders. When it’s that hot, a couple of degrees either way makes no difference.

How right Paul Homewood is.
Those who don’t believe in dangerous man-made global warming (rebranded as ‘climate change’, or the ‘climate crisis’) are often referred to as ‘deniers’ or ‘climate deniers’.
I’d say that the only deniers are the likes of the so-called scientists at the Met Office who, despite real-world data going back over 100 years, persist in peddling silly scaremongering stories and deny reality.
As I’ve asked before, where’s the dangerous climate change in their records?
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-temperature-rainfall-and-sunshine-time-series
The climate change nonsense has been relentlessly rammed down our throats since the formation of the IPCC in 1988, and even worse, the majority of the UK’s politicians believe in it all. As a result, we now face draconian impacts as a result of their misguided legislation. When will it end?

If the BBC gets its way, there will be no sports at all. Travel of any sort, from soccer moms taking kids to their games to pro athletes flying across oceans, will be forbidden due to its climate impact. We will all have “carbon” budgets that won’t be enough to heat our homes or cook our food, so there will definitely be no driving to recreational activities of any kind. And due to the risk of the future omega variant of COVID, there will be no in-person spectatorship anyway. If it were true to its dystopian principles, the BBC would be railing against the fact that Wimbledon exists today.

Numerous in-depth studies of the minds of Alarmists have been done, and many, as one would expect, suffer from Rotted Brain Syndrome (RBS), due primarily to infrequent, if ever use of their brain. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Many others though, have a remarkable on/off switch of sorts, whis is activated by key words such as “climate change”, “global warming” and “extreme weather”. When those words (and others) are heard or read, their brain switches automatically to the “off” position. This allows them to revert to Belief mode, wherein they can just spout meaningless catch phrases and the like.
Quite remarkable, really.

Jim: take a close look at that graph. Notice that there are a few peaks of 22 degrees C or just below, spanning over a century from the year 1900, There are just two above 22 degrees C – the hot summer of 1976, and more recently 2018. Curiously, the summer of 1959 was a hot one in England, yet I don’t see evidence of it here. Perhaps a meteorologist could explain why this is so. That aside, there’s no evidence suggestive of anything out of the ordinary here. Warmer summers, cooler summers – nothing at all extraordinary, nothing suggesting dangerous man-made warming or ‘climate change’. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, I’m 72 years of age, and I’ve lived in England for all of those years. The climate has not changed – warm summers, cold summers, wet summers, dry summers, nothing’s changed. So why, despite real-world records such as the above, are we being bombarded with all the ‘climate change’ nonsense by the Met Office? Where’s the evidence of climate change in the above data?

Paul Homewood:
“Occasionally the jet stream will also pull up very hot air from the Sahara, as in 2019, but this a short term meteorological occurrence, typically for a day or two, not evidence of climate change.
Unless the Earth shifts on its orbit, UK summers will be unlikely to top 1976 temperatures in our lifetimes.

Yes it is “short-term” and it is “weather” BUT it takes place with the current atmospheric energy available driving it.

Our hottest days always come from air advected over the shortest sea-track – the channel.
The air that sits over the SE of England come time of maximum insolation on our hottest days has been imported from France, and indeed in extreme heatwaves from air that originated over the Sahara.
It is by no means unusual.
It’s happened as, like, *forever*.
To say that it is not evidence of climate change is staggering.
In the past those extreme Saharan air-masses still got to us on occasion.
The air arriving from the Sahara via France will have had many days of lesser night-time minima, which do not become invisible because of daytime heating. It is still energy that doesn’t have to be supplied by that days sunshine.
Also non-condensing GHGs act throughout the 24 hours in attenuating LWIR escaping to space.

This is the same get-out as saying that the Lytton B.C record high was just the result of a freak Foehn event.
Yes, it’s weather but the weather is a variability in the energy available in the atmosphere – and both the US/Canadian and any extreme heatwave in the SE of England are in by no means “freak”. These events have happened before (as in the meteorological setup) but they have not resulted in such high maxes.
That is the Rockies have been there a long while and  SE’ly Foehn winds are not new. It’s happen many times before.
