State of Georgia Helping Delta Airlines Reduce CO2 Emissions

Georgia House threatens Delta tax break after CEO slammed new voting restrictions

By CNN Newsource
Published  9:14 am

Georgia’s Republican-controlled House on Wednesday voted to revoke a major tax break for Delta Air Lines as punishment for its CEO’s public criticism of the state’s controversial new lawclamping down on ballot access.

The state Senate did not take up the measure before lawmakers adjourned for the year, rendering it dead for this year — but the threat underscores the potential political backlash corporations could face for opposing efforts to restrict voting.

Voting rights activists are lobbying major companies to take a stand against elections bills under consideration in key political battlegrounds, where Republicans are moving to erect new barriers to voting after record turnout in 2020 helped Democrats win the White House and the majority in the US Senate.

Delta will no doubt welcome this effort to repeal their fossil fuel tax breaks. Reducing CO2 emissions accords with Delta’s public commitment to a low carbon future;

Delta’s ambitious carbon neutrality plan balances immediate actions and long-term investments on path to zero-impact aviation

Staff Writer Mar 4, 2021 8:45am

Delta Air Lines’ audacious commitment to carbon neutrality from March 2020 onward is coming to fruition with swift impact through immediate actions coupled with long-term investments to combat climate change.

“Connecting the world and protecting our environment for future generations cannot be mutually exclusive,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. “Travelers should not have to choose between seeing the world and saving the world. We must continue to take immediate actions today and can’t wait for future solutions to become a reality. While there are many paths to carbon neutrality, Delta chose to make an impact today and invest in a future where aviation itself becomes cleaner for the world around us.”

In the short term, Delta intends to achieve carbon neutrality by directly reducing emissions through fleet and operational efficiencies and addressing remaining emissions through carbon offset project investments that maintain, protect and expand forests. See Delta’s sustainability glossary for definitions of sustainability terms and details about Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

The Georgia House of Representatives desire to repeal Delta’s fuel tax exemption also accords with Greenpeace’s demand for an end to fossil fuel subsidies. The Greenpeace definition of a fossil fuel subsidy includes fossil fuel tax breaks, like the exemption Delta receives.

Imagine if more states followed Georgia’s lead? Delta would soon have an irrefutable claim to be America’s climate leader of the skies, showing their incontrovertible commitment to reducing carbon emissions by paying more fuel tax per gallon than any other major airline.

Of course, other airlines would not want to be left behind. Delta’s competitors would quickly follow Delta’s courageous climate leadership, by demanding an end to their own fossil fuel tax exemptions. They would demand the right to demonstrate their solidarity with Delta’s high cost commitment to a low carbon future.

All too often, WUWT sadly has to report on the disagreements and conflicts which arise between participants in the climate debate, so I’m sure you will all appreciate the warm fuzzy feeling I get from writing about a win / win situation like this, in which everyone gets what they say they want.

I have well over 1 1/2 million behind the wheel of a big truck. If I counted the time in the sleeper when team driving I would probably be at 2 million.

I used to love to fly but have not been in an aircraft since the government did their stupid stunt after 9/11. When some HS dropout told a CMOH recipient he could not take his medal on because it was potential weapon, that was the last straw for me.

As for Delta? I think they would have gone under years ago if not for contracts for flying military members around.

Clearly the racists are those who claim black people are incapable of getting a driver’s license.

I bet the Democrats couldn’t fill a room with people they claim would be harmed by Georgia’s new law.

There might be a few exceptions, but as you say, the Democrats could make a special effort to assist these people rather than calling for sweeping election law changes that allow cheating.

But their purpose is not to help a few individuals, their purpose is to promote cheating in future elections and to call the other side racists when they don’t agree with doing that.

What is wrong with having to show ID to vote? When I lived in Appomattox, County, Virginia I was required to show proof of identity and they checked me off on their rolls. The poll workers mostly knew me but that didn’t stop them from asking for my ID. Here in Portugal ID is required in order to vote, I know this because I asked my friends. It doesn’t offend them to have to produce their residence card, they don’t want illegals voting in their elections either!

Apparently it is only American Liberals who don’t have a problem with illegals voting in American elections. This is fundamentally wrong in so many ways!

In the Netherlands, everyone has to carry identity papers, with photos and fingerprints, at all times.
You show the card when you vote.
All non-citizens have different color cards, so they do not vote
Very simple to separate the wheat from the rest.

If a cop stops you, he will ask for your identity papers, runs them through a scanner in his squad car, which tells him your background for the past 20 years.
If any thing does not check out, like a kited check, or an unpaid traffic ticket, he will cite you for that as well.

I was a tourist a few years earliest, and went back to the US.
Then, I came back to the Netherlands, sure enough, the customs guy inspected my identity papers, and made me pay the ticket with a credi card, before allowing me into the Netherlands.

Ed Zuiderwijk

‘Clamping down on ballot access’. They, the lying toad media like CNN, just can’t stop promulgating falsehoods.

I voted by mail in this year’s Dutch general elections. The process is simple: you signal by email your intention to vote. Then you get your invite by mail to enroll on the electoral role, in my case for expatriates. You return the form with proof of residence and identity, that is a copy of your passport. About two weeks before polling day you get the actual ballot which you return in a sealed ballot envelope inside your return envelope, again with a copy of your passport. The submission has to arrive before 3 PM on election day. Anything arriving later will be disregarded, that is destroyed unopened. At the next election the enrolment is still valid so can be skipped. Did it for the 5th or 6th time this year.

It is straightforward and about as secure as realistically possible. Takes longer to post the letter than to complete the forms.

Mail voting is not for everybody and should be restricted to people who have genuine reasons for not showing up at the polling booth, because the voting decision might not be taken privately and it may be subject to collective influence

Equal treatment under the law is an ancient principle that is enshrined as the “Equal Protection Clause” of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

So, to follow the Constitution, the State of Georgia must necessarily strip state fuel tax exemptions from ALL other airlines, not just Delta.

But then again, the Georgia House of Representatives may no longer care about the US Constitution, or they may just consider their state is no longer part of these United States of America.

So, do businesses that use other kinds of fuel, like diesel or gasoline, get an exemption? If not, does this not also constitute a violation of the 14th amendment? How about TIFs? Is the 14th amendment even supposed to cover this sort of thing, or is it only about criminal, and perhaps civil law?

From the article: “Georgia’s Republican-controlled House on Wednesday voted to revoke a major tax break for Delta Air Lines as punishment for its CEO’s public criticism of the state’s controversial new lawclamping down on ballot access.”

There’s nothing controversial about Georgia’s new voting laws.

Here’s what Georgia officials should do:

Make a comparison between the provisions of the Georgia election law particulars, and *all* the other States in the Union.

What you will find is what the Georgia governor described when he compared Georgia’s new election laws to Joe Biden’s home State, Deleware’s, election laws.

Georgia’s laws are even more liberal than Deleware’s election laws. Joe Biden ought to be criticizing his own State, if he thinks Georgia’s laws are unfair.

I saw a report that claims pro sports has lost 30 percent of their viewers because the viewers don’t like politics being thrust into their sport pasttime.

They are probably going to lose more viewers now with this stupid dicision to move the All-Star game.

I would posit that a far greater number of minorities watch pro basketball and pro football than baseball. Moreover, much of spring training and practice games are in the South, which builds the fan base. I would not be surprised to see MLB suffer a much larger loss. They’ve just insulted the majority of their fans.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a baseball game. It might have been when I was a kid and liked Johnny Bench, even though I lived in Virginia. So, maybe 50 years?

Even worse: “ Delta Air Lines told employees they helped write Georgia’s new voting law. They dug in deeper defending their position that they ‘made the bill better’ and refused to criticize it.

Facing online and media controversy, and a supposed-consumer boycott, they’ve now reversed course. After first congratulating themselves on it, and then refusing to criticize it, CEO Ed Bastian now says it’s abhorrent.”

He simply caved in to a vocal minority and the lying left. No integrity. No honesty. Why would shareholders allow a man whose character is so lacking run their company?

And this move by MLB will hurt a LOT of black-owned businesses in Atlanta. Good job!

Georgia’s Republican-controlled House on Wednesday voted to revoke a major tax break for Delta Air Lines … “

Why is Delta getting this tax break in the first place?

Quid pro quo (“something for something” in Latin ) is a Latin phrase used in English to mean an exchange of goods or services, in which one transfer is contingent upon the other; “a favor for a favor”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quid_pro_quo

What is the state getting from Delta in return? And might not Delta stop giving it — what ever “it” is.

Business. A lot of ancillary businesses support airlines and airports. That means sales taxes and the like, lots of them.

But the problem is that there is no way to tie tax-breaks to regional economic benefit. Atlanta is large, growing and thriving for a lot of reasons. The Atlanta airport and Delta are large, growing and thriving for a lot of reasons. Drawing a line between tax breaks and Delta’s economic success in Atlanta is at best difficult and likely impossible.

An alternative way to analyze the situation is to ask if there are places that the citizens of Atlanta could have spent the money (or even reduced taxes across the board) and received greater benefit.

Tying tax breaks to specific economic benefit is like tying CO2 to a specific amount of “global warming”, ecological damage and economic damage.

What’s ironic about the Delta airlines involvment is Delta people were actually involved in forming the new election law and pronounced it acceptable just a short time ago, according to reporting on tv this morning.

So Delta liked the election law bill a couple of weeks before the Governor signed it, and then it is claimed that the Forces of Woke came down upon Delta, and Delta folded and proclaimed the Georgia election law unacceptable.

Is the Delta CEO Woke, or is he just spooked by the Woke? It looks like he was spooked, to me. Either way, we get the same outrageous result.

The Left has infected everything with politics and do so deliberately. Their aim is to divide us into little tribes and then pit the tribes against each other, and then they will portray themselves as saviors of the downtrodden and the solution to all our problems.

From today’s WSJ …

What a clumsy emergency landing. Last week Mr. Bastian said that “concerns remain” about the law, while he explained—accurately—that it “expands weekend voting, codifies Sunday voting and protects a voter’s ability to cast an absentee ballot without providing a reason.” He added: “For the first time, drop boxes have also been authorized for all counties statewide.”

What changed in the interim? Could it be that he has bowed to the woke mob, as the path of least political and commercial resistance? Why not stay silent if you don’t know what you’re talking about or can’t stand the heat?

Imagine this phone call from Ed Bastian to Keisha Lance Bottoms …

We appreciate all you’ve done for us here in Atlanta but we’re moving our headquarters and most of our traffic to Valdosta. Yes, it’s airport isn’t quite as big but the commute to work is a lot easier plus they promised no taxes for ten years.

The tax break is given by the state which would include Valdosta. Delta would need to move completely out of state. It is certainly a possibility, but a hugely expensive one.

If there weren’t such stupid consequences, it would be funny how leftwing media continually harp on about it’s supporter base has a higher IQ, yet millions are disenfranchised unless they can vote without having to give identification, turn up to a polling station, apply for a postal vote or without someone doing everything for them.

April 2, 2021 3:00 pm

but the threat underscores the potential political backlash corporations could face for opposing efforts to restrict improve and expand voting.

Voting rights activists are lobbying major companies to take a stand against elections bills under consideration in key political battlegrounds, where Republicans are moving to erect new barriers to improve voting integrity after record turnout ballot stuffing due to last minute relaxing of voting procedures in 2020 helped Democrats win the White House and the majority in the US Senate

Fixed it. See how much clearer it becomes when it’s not overburdened with lies?

Yes, in effect, by Coke, Delta, MLB, and Biden protesting common measures that improve democratic integrity and facilitate eligible voters, they are colluding to enable and commit fraud. Not that they CAIR (Catastrophic Athropogenic Immigration Reform). So, hold them jointly and separately accountable. Impeach Biden.

LCW:
Yes. There is a big difference between ‘absentee ballots” and “mail-in ballots”.
The second variety is where most of the fraud potential arises.

As to DELTA: its CEO makes a great case for using Southwest Airlines or some other carrier.
Similarly, I’ve stopped watching the NFL (BLM), NBA (BLM & grovelling to China) and now MLB
due to their political stances. Why don’t corporations “stick to their knitting” by just offering a good product at a good price? And leave politics to the (mostly awful) politicians!

btw: I’m also trying to limit what I buy from China after reading about their treatment of Uighurs.

On a purely technical level you are completely correct. However, as they (tax breaks targeted at businesses and subsidies to businesses) basically accomplish the same goal, they tend to get lumped together and referred to as “subsidies” by most laymen.

There’s not much you can do in the United States without an ID.

Claiming requiring a voter ID suppresses the legal vote is just plain wrong.

What requiring voter ID does do is suppress illegal voting.

The Democrats are planning on registering all the illegal aliens they are currently allowing into the country.

All States need to take extra steps to make sure illegal aliens are not allowed to vote in American elections. We need to throw a monkey wrench into the Democrat schemes.

So Delta is going to atone for their CO2 sins by buying indulgences in the form of carbon offsets. Oh well, indulgences worked for people in medieval church, I suppose it will work in the Church of Climate Change too. What matters is that you are allowed to keep on sinning.

I hope this leads to a host of bill writing all across the country. It’s brilliant and there are a lot of (millions) of tax exemptions and incentive payments to work on all across the country. I hope it’s a model to slap the virtue signaling hard, especially those that don’t even read the law that they are positioning on..

One small problem with this article. The purpose of the law is not to restrict or suppress or prevent voting. Its purpose is to improve the integrity of the voting system.

This feels good until one realizes how much mischief can be done by the proponents of “cancel culture” if legislation to punish a company for its political views isn’t categorically banned. My guess is that it will be, on first amendment grounds. But I’m not a lawyer, I just read a lot of law.
