The Georgia House of Representatives desire to repeal Delta’s fuel tax exemption also accords with Greenpeace’s demand for an end to fossil fuel subsidies. The Greenpeace definition of a fossil fuel subsidy includes fossil fuel tax breaks, like the exemption Delta receives.
Imagine if more states followed Georgia’s lead? Delta would soon have an irrefutable claim to be America’s climate leader of the skies, showing their incontrovertible commitment to reducing carbon emissions by paying more fuel tax per gallon than any other major airline.
Of course, other airlines would not want to be left behind. Delta’s competitors would quickly follow Delta’s courageous climate leadership, by demanding an end to their own fossil fuel tax exemptions. They would demand the right to demonstrate their solidarity with Delta’s high cost commitment to a low carbon future.
All too often, WUWT sadly has to report on the disagreements and conflicts which arise between participants in the climate debate, so I’m sure you will all appreciate the warm fuzzy feeling I get from writing about a win / win situation like this, in which everyone gets what they say they want.

I used to love to fly but have not been in an aircraft since the government did their stupid stunt after 9/11. When some HS dropout told a CMOH recipient he could not take his medal on because it was potential weapon, that was the last straw for me.

They don’t want to have IDs required in order to vote because of racism! When asked if they would no longer require IDs before boarding Delta flights the spokesman had no comment!
They also believe black people can’t get IDs (for racist reasons), but they don’t want to help them do so. There’s no bill proposed by Demonrats to allocate any money to help black people get IDs. Clearly we know who the racists are.
Dems can’t pass a bill to spend money on minority IDs because the Georgia law makes them free already.

There might be a few exceptions, but as you say, the Democrats could make a special effort to assist these people rather than calling for sweeping election law changes that allow cheating.

What is wrong with having to show ID to vote? When I lived in Appomattox, County, Virginia I was required to show proof of identity and they checked me off on their rolls. The poll workers mostly knew me but that didn’t stop them from asking for my ID. Here in Portugal ID is required in order to vote, I know this because I asked my friends. It doesn’t offend them to have to produce their residence card, they don’t want illegals voting in their elections either!

The law doesn’t say that. Water can be made available from an unmanned dispenser. There are also provisions to reduce line size in particularly problematic line districts. Read the damn law and then comment.

The law states that it is illegal for the government to offer water or any other liquid to someone standing in line to vote. Anybody who has followed a horse, knows they are given to periodically emitting vast quantities of methane. Given the number you would need to carry out the work of just one pickup, electric or otherwise, I suspect they are on hiding to nothing.
The average healthy 1,000 lb horse will produce somewhere between 35 lbs and 50 lbs of wet manure per day. I’m not sure where that fits into their carbon footprint calculations. 🙂 Fun April 1st article, though.

Anyone who has actually bothered to read the Georgia voter integrity law would conclude it is not correct to characterize it as “clamping on ballet access”. If anything, the law will make the election process fairer and more transparent by making it harder to cheat. Concerning the carbon reduction, I appreciate your warm and fussy feeling toward the whole situation.

I voted by mail in this year’s Dutch general elections. The process is simple: you signal by email your intention to vote. Then you get your invite by mail to enroll on the electoral role, in my case for expatriates. You return the form with proof of residence and identity, that is a copy of your passport. About two weeks before polling day you get the actual ballot which you return in a sealed ballot envelope inside your return envelope, again with a copy of your passport. The submission has to arrive before 3 PM on election day. Anything arriving later will be disregarded, that is destroyed unopened. At the next election the enrolment is still valid so can be skipped. Did it for the 5th or 6th time this year.
It is straightforward and about as secure as realistically possible. Takes longer to post the letter than to complete the forms.
Mail voting is not for everybody and should be restricted to people who have genuine reasons for not showing up at the polling booth, because the voting decision might not be taken privately and it may be subject to collective influence
Indeed, and it applies to me. That’s why you have to apply to be on the register and argue why. If I were resident in my home country the default position is that you go to the polling station in person.

Equal treatment under the law is an ancient principle that is enshrined as the “Equal Protection Clause” of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.
So, to follow the Constitution, the State of Georgia must necessarily strip state fuel tax exemptions from ALL other airlines, not just Delta.
But then again, the Georgia House of Representatives may no longer care about the US Constitution, or they may just consider their state is no longer part of these United States of America.

Do you even know if any other airlines have the exemption? The government provides preferential treatment to corps all the time to woo them, but for some reason, this is not considered unequal treatment. Maybe by taking away the exemption they are actually restoring the balance.

Here’s what Georgia officials should do:
Make a comparison between the provisions of the Georgia election law particulars, and *all* the other States in the Union.
What you will find is what the Georgia governor described when he compared Georgia’s new election laws to Joe Biden’s home State, Deleware’s, election laws.
Georgia’s laws are even more liberal than Deleware’s election laws. Joe Biden ought to be criticizing his own State, if he thinks Georgia’s laws are unfair.
The Democrats are demagoguing this issue. They don’t want any restrictions on their election cheating. Anything that restricts their cheating, they call racist. Their favorite method of attack.
Democrats don’t care about restrictions. Democracy is only useful as long as it is politically congruent. I see where Major League Baseball has announced they will move the baseball all-star game out of Atlanta, Georgia as a protest of Georgia’s new election laws.
The League hasn’t picked a new city for the all-star game yet, and it will be interesting to compare that city and State and their election laws with the Georgia election laws. I’m betting Georgia’s election laws will prove to be just as liberal as any State the Baseball League chooses.

I would posit that a far greater number of minorities watch pro basketball and pro football than baseball. Moreover, much of spring training and practice games are in the South, which builds the fan base. I would not be surprised to see MLB suffer a much larger loss. They’ve just insulted the majority of their fans.

What is the state getting from Delta in return? And might not Delta stop giving it — what ever “it” is.
Business. A lot of ancillary businesses support airlines and airports. That means sales taxes and the like, lots of them.
But the problem is that there is no way to tie tax-breaks to regional economic benefit. Atlanta is large, growing and thriving for a lot of reasons. The Atlanta airport and Delta are large, growing and thriving for a lot of reasons. Drawing a line between tax breaks and Delta’s economic success in Atlanta is at best difficult and likely impossible.
An alternative way to analyze the situation is to ask if there are places that the citizens of Atlanta could have spent the money (or even reduced taxes across the board) and received greater benefit.
Tying tax breaks to specific economic benefit is like tying CO2 to a specific amount of “global warming”, ecological damage and economic damage.
What’s ironic about the Delta airlines involvment is Delta people were actually involved in forming the new election law and pronounced it acceptable just a short time ago, according to reporting on tv this morning.
So Delta liked the election law bill a couple of weeks before the Governor signed it, and then it is claimed that the Forces of Woke came down upon Delta, and Delta folded and proclaimed the Georgia election law unacceptable.
Is the Delta CEO Woke, or is he just spooked by the Woke? It looks like he was spooked, to me. Either way, we get the same outrageous result.

We appreciate all you’ve done for us here in Atlanta but we’re moving our headquarters and most of our traffic to Valdosta. Yes, it’s airport isn’t quite as big but the commute to work is a lot easier plus they promised no taxes for ten years.
The tax break is given by the state which would include Valdosta. Delta would need to move completely out of state. It is certainly a possibility, but a hugely expensive one.

As to DELTA: its CEO makes a great case for using Southwest Airlines or some other carrier.

On a purely technical level you are completely correct. However, as they (tax breaks targeted at businesses and subsidies to businesses) basically accomplish the same goal, they tend to get lumped together and referred to as “subsidies” by most laymen.

There’s not much you can do in the United States without an ID.
Claiming requiring a voter ID suppresses the legal vote is just plain wrong.
What requiring voter ID does do is suppress illegal voting.
The Democrats are planning on registering all the illegal aliens they are currently allowing into the country.
All States need to take extra steps to make sure illegal aliens are not allowed to vote in American elections. We need to throw a monkey wrench into the Democrat schemes.

You would need to define “worked”.
I hope this leads to a host of bill writing all across the country. It’s brilliant and there are a lot of (millions) of tax exemptions and incentive payments to work on all across the country. I hope it’s a model to slap the virtue signaling hard, especially those that don’t even read the law that they are positioning on..
One small problem with this article. The purpose of the law is not to restrict or suppress or prevent voting. Its purpose is to improve the integrity of the voting system.
This feels good until one realizes how much mischief can be done by the proponents of “cancel culture” if legislation to punish a company for its political views isn’t categorically banned. My guess is that it will be, on first amendment grounds. But I’m not a lawyer, I just read a lot of law.
