Attenborough twisted the truth about dying walrus: why believe him on climate change?

From Polar Bear Science

Posted on February 23, 2021 |

Sir David Attenborough hid the truth about hundreds of walrus falling off Siberian cliffs to their deaths a few years ago – he insisted this was due to climate change, but we now know he was well aware the tusked beasts fell because they were being stalked by predatory polar bears. Since he was willing to tell outright falsehoods about dying walrus to powerful elites at the 2019 World Economic Forum, I expect he’d say anything to advance his agenda with members of the UN Security Council.

Headline quotes from Attenborough’s address to the UN Security Council today:

“Climate change a threat to global security

Climate change could, within a lifetime, destroy “entire cities and societies“

“Climate change is biggest threat modern humans have ever faced”

In other words, lots of emotional hyperbole from a showman who wants to leave a legacy. This is not the dispassionate science we require to make sensible decisions about the future. Attenborough spouted contrived nonsense about walrus and now spouts contrived nonsense about climate change.

What a mess, the green idiots honor Attenborough and then vilify Dr. Susan. The Sal Alinsky playbook says if you are caught in a lie, just tell a bigger one and keep going. This was the mentor for Obama, and the current Biden Administration is loaded with Obama warmed-overs. I’m personally waiting for one of the CAGW issues to get to the SCOTUS for a trial similar to the “Scopes Monkey Trial”. OK, I’m actually about to get in my SUV and go to play golf and not really waiting.

I just watched CNN air a video of Attenborough talking about “it’s too late” because climate change can’t be reversed. I am not sure why his left eye doesn’t open all the way but it fits his view of the world. After Attenborough CNN showed John Heinz Kerry blathering something about the USA needs to do their part and they’re behind. I thought the USA was about the only one of the large economies that shows reduction of plant food in the air?

You’re right that astrologers don’t attack those who don’t agree- but Abolition Man describes the comparison with astrology in that it predicts the future. Perhaps, a more general comparison of “climate science” with a new religion might be best. I have several climate change skeptic books but none take on this perspective. A solidly written book by somebody who really has a good understanding of comparative religion would be awesome. I see analogies with fundamentalist religeons which say their scriptue must not be challenged. It has priests and prophets and saints. It says how the Earth and all life will be destroyed if we are not all faithful to its demands. It wants the world to be one big theocracy worshiping the sun and wind and “clean and green energy”. The IPCC is like the Vatican. I’m sure there is a good writer out there who could take this on- if it hasn’t already been done.

Exactly, because most actors are so well-educated that many of them don’t even have to finish high school, they already know everything they need to know about the world! We need to go back to when actors were welcomed to town for the entertainment they provided but as soon as the play was over they were “encouraged” to leave quickly.

Attenborough is a TV personality, so there’s no reason to take his word for anything at all whether he’s previously been dishonest or not.

If he were instead a climate scientist, “belief” in “dispassionate science” would also be inappropriate. There’s no shortage of climate scientists willing to shade the truth (as they see it) to promote their policy preferences, or turn a blind eye to political allies saying things they know are untrue (e.g. climate change being an existential threat).

If he were instead a truly dispassionate climate scientist expressingly frankly exactly what he believes, there would still be no reason to take his word for it. “Climate science” is a very broad multiple-disciplinary area and PhDs are very narrow. There’s no reason to believe that expertise in one tiny area of it translates into expertise in all of climate science. Even in their narrow area of expertise their beliefs and truth are not identical, if “climate science” has a track record of accurate predictions in any field, it’s escaped my notice.

Of course, Attenborough will be speaking to politicians, and they also have a dismal record on making “sensible decisions about the future”. What we need from politicians is not really for them to listen to “dispassionate science” while making decisions on behalf of the masses; what we need is for them to recognize that allowing the great masses of people to make their *own* decisions about the future typically produces better outcomes.

That walrus are hauling out more and suffering as a consequence is an incontrovertible fact, a continuing effect of the decline in arctic sea ice, which sees the ice floes over shallow seas walrus used to feed from rapidly melt out each spring.

In 19th century, the walrus was about to go extinct because of overhunting . Along the East Coast down to Cape Cod and St. Lorenz Gulf several thousands of walrus have been killed.
There are estimates that alone along the Baffin Island in the time 1925 – 1931 175,000 walrus have been killed.

Walrus survived and thrived through the Holocene Optimum when Arctic sea ice extent was FAR , FAR LESS than now, often non-existent in summer.

Arctic sea ice has not declined in the last 15 years.. so there he is LYING yet again

Attenborough twisted the truth about dying walrus

The bog standard tactic from the post-modern left is emotion first and everything else second. Never seen a charity commercial?

The PR people who created the Greta Thunberg experience put it this way:

How is it possible for you to be so easily tricked by something so simple as a story, because you are tricked? Well, it all comes down to one core thing and that is emotional investment. The more emotionally invested you are in anything in your life, the less critical and the less objectively observant you become.” — David JP Phillips, We Don’t Have Time board of directors, “The Magical Science of Storytelling”

February 24, 2021 7:42 am

The planet’s surface must warm for the planet to warm. By surface I mean the top 100 meters of the oceans and 5 meters of land. Any day time heating that does not warm the surface means no long term warming.

CO2 IR radiates around 15 microns and hence very low energy. That which is redirected towards the surface cannot penetrate the surface skin. Some is absorbed by vegetation and never makes it to the surface. When absorbed by water the energy enhances evaporation which is a cooling mechanism. That energy remains in the atmosphere. Excess energy in the atmosphere is emitted into space every night.

Climate science treats all the redirected energy the same and assumes it is all absorbed into the surface. This is where they fail to follow real science.

BBC has pension money invested in “green.” Their money is managed by Generation Investment Management, LLP. They manage “green” investments for large investors – governments, etc.

You can look at the website of GIM.

Al Gore runs GIM. He gets a cut of the gains for the many investors managed by GIM.

Large investors are motivated to invest in green by a couple motives. First, they have been convinced they must invest in green to be ethical. They have gone ahead and signed on as “responsible investors.”

Second: they are aware of the issue of green investment by advocates promoting the global warming story – such as Al Gore himself.

So, Al Gore promotes global warming, and gives large investors – nations, BBC, etc., a solution: invest via a green investment manager – and lo and behold, he is that investment manager.

BBC has an incentive to get everyone believing in green. If most nations declare they will invest in green, then they all create this market. And the nations will buy into solar panels, etc., which itself makes the market.

Al Gore has a financial incentive to promote man-made global warming, and promote green investment – he is making a lot of money off of this.

BBC is biased.

I have heard that speech before 60 years ago, Paul R Ehrlich was Attenborough’s inspiration for this dire warning. “Population Bomb” he called it. We were taught it at school as the truth, how could it be wrong.

I can remember the consensus agreement of “serious and academic minds” to Ehrlich’s predictions. Hundred’s of millions would die of hunger, civilisations would collapse in the 1970’s. The UK would be wiped of the face of the earth, so dire was the situation.

Perhaps they did, but I must admit it all passed me by.

However I did not foresee SARS Cov 2 coming, and neither did anyone else, including all the “serious and academic” minds who now desperately want to link Covid to the favourite “extinction belief”, climate change. When they do this, as Attenborough has done, his credibility drops to zero.

John,
May I recommend PJ O’Rourke’s wonderful demolition of Paul Ehrlich and Al Gore in his chapter on ecology in “All the Trouble in the World”(1992).
It followed the publication of Al Gore’s first tome, “ Earth in the Balance”(1992).
Other than by the Board of Governors of Stanford where Ehrlich has been appointed a Professor of Sociology, it would be difficult to take seriously a writer who predicted Britain would be a herd of ranging tribes scrabbling for food by 2000.
But his mantle has been taken up by Sir David and many Malthusian followers.

DA despite his cuddly grandpa persona is a deeply misanthropic person who no doubt entertains genocial thoughts. He has lived long enough to see the utter rubbish that everything Paul Ehrlich said really was and is. It’s shameful that he still peddles the same catastrophist necrophilia.

Ever since he made the life of David Bellamy very difficult at the BBC and his claims in the 70’s of an ice age approaching I have not paid any attention to him.

More walruses hauling out onto the shore might be due to a growing population.
What is the data on walrus population or is this as politically corrupted as the polar bear population data?
Maybe the population is growing?

How do the catastrophist-necrophiles twist this into a bad news story?

As a young person I grew up with Attenborough’s nature documentaries and loved watching them. Now I despise him. Great legacy “Sir” David. You just blew your life’s work out of the window.

He is a liar, a fraud. Not only lying about this, but also about polar bears ‘having’ to hunt narwhales because of climate change. A quick google and you find talk of that back into the 1970s.

He is a bulshitting liar.
