That Way Madness Lies

Propublica ran an article last week describing the anguish of a committed climate activist.

It is rare that an article makes the actual point in the first five words, but this is a good example, emphasis mine.

Peter Kalmus, out of his mind, stumbled back toward the car. It was all happening. All the stuff he’d been trying to get others to see, and failing to get others to see — it was all here. The day before, when his family started their Labor Day backpacking trip along the oak-lined dry creek bed in Romero Canyon, in the mountains east of Santa Barbara, the temperature had been 105 degrees. Now it was 110 degrees, and under his backpack, his “large mammalian self,” as Peter called his body, was more than just overheating. He was melting down. Everything felt wrong. His brain felt wrong and the planet felt wrong, and everything that lived on the planet felt wrong, off-kilter, in the wrong place.

Nearing the trailhead, Peter’s mind death-spiralled: What’s next summer going to bring? How hot will it be in 10 years? Yes, the data showed that the temperature would only rise per decade by a few tenths of a degree Celsius. But those tenths would add up and the extreme temperatures would rise even faster, and while Peter’s big mammal body could handle 100 degrees, sort of, 110 drove him crazy. That was just not a friendly climate for a human. 110 degrees was hostile, an alien planet.

Poor Peter, no one listens to him.

For years, in articles in Yes! magazine, in op-eds in the Los Angeles Times, in his book “Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution,” on social media, Peter had been pleading, begging for people to pay attention to the global emergency. “Is this my personal hell?” he tweeted this past fall. “That I have to spend my entire life desperately trying to convince everyone NOT TO DESTROY THE %$#^@^ EARTH?”

Apparently his transformation and descent happened relatively quickly.

He’d met Sharon at Harvard. They’d moved to New York so she could earn a teaching degree. For a while, before returning to school, Peter had made good money on Wall Street writing code. Now here he was hearing, really hearing for the first time, that the planet, his son’s future home, was going to roast. Full stop.

This was a catastrophe — a physical, physics catastrophe, and here he was, a physicist about to have a son. He exited the lecture hall in a daze. “I was kind of like, ‘Are we just going to pretend this is like a normal scientific talk?’” he told me, recalling his thoughts. “We’re talking about the end of life on Earth as we know it.”

For the next eight months, Peter walked around Manhattan, “freaking out in my brain,” he said, like “one of those end-is-near people with the sandwich boards.”

His poor wife and kids.

Four years into climate awakening and action, Peter felt he had accomplished nearly zero. One night, frustrated with inaction and disgusted with fossil fuel use, he sat at his computer and calculated the sources of all his own emissions so he could go about reducing them.

In the morning he presented Sharon with a pie chart.

Which led to:

Next came dumpster diving (which eventually — and thankfully — morphed into an arrangement with Trader Joe’s to pick up their unsellable food every other Sunday night). Peter’s haul — “seven or eight boxes,” according to Sharon; “three boxes,” according to Peter — included dozens of eggs with only one broken. Flats of (mostly not moldy) strawberries. Bread past its sell-by date. Peter did his best to put things away before he fell asleep because waking up to the mess drove Sharon nuts. But … it was a lot. Low-carbon living was a lot.

They stopped using the gas dryer. They stopped shitting in the flush toilet and started practicing “humanure,” composting their own crap. Sharon had lived with an outhouse in Mongolia, “so that was something I was used to,” she said. Plus, to be honest, she liked the local, organic anti-capitalist politics of it. “Marx writes about this in ‘Capital, Volume 1’ that one of the reasons Europeans started to use chemical fertilizers is because people started to move into the cities and off of the land, … and people stopped pooping out in the countryside, so it became less fertile.” The main problem, for Sharon, was that their bathroom was small and the composting toilet was inside. They used eucalyptus leaves to try to cover up the smell, but then little bits of leaves got all over the bathroom, too. After a while Peter moved the composting toilet outdoors.

His wife had patience most of us could only dream of. His kids coped in their own way.

Sharon staged minor rebellions to maintain a sense of self — little stuff, like using lots of hot water when she did the dishes, and bigger stuff, like she stopped talking sometimes. Braird and Zane, too, each absorbed and reacted to Peter’s passionate cri de coeur in their own ways. Zane, the younger one, started doing his own regular, Greta Thunberg-style climate strikes in front of city hall. Braird, the older, meanwhile, was entering his teens, differentiating and waxing nihilistic. When asked what he wanted to do with his future, Braird said, “What future?” When asked what he thought about climate change, he sunk a dagger into his father’s heart like only a child can. Braird said, “I don’t really think about it.”

Poor sissy boy Peter, suffering some emotional crisis, and involving his family as well. 110 degrees and he’s “more than just overheating. He was melting down.”. For the record I worked in a canyon north of Phoenix, Arizona in July when it was 116 degrees and had no problem, although I drank a lot of dilute gatorade. A lady geologist and her dog were working with me, so the dog got water poured over him, but everybody did fine. Let’s hope Peter gets the help he needs because he obviously he is losing it.

115 F is not unusual during wheat harvest in NE Oregon.

In Afghanistan, my computer screen wallpaper was a shot of a buddy on the ramp at Kuwait International holding up a plastic thermometer reading 140 F.

We regularly put up hay in >110F, riding on a wagon behind the baler. In the barn it was even hotter, not a lot of air circulation. Put myself through college doing this in the summer!

BTW, I didn’t notice anything about him turning off the air conditioning. Did I miss it?

Yes Ron, that’s exactly what I thought. He should consider the Marathon Des Sables, where they do the equivalent of 5.5 regular marathons in 6 days, with midday temperatures as high as 120 F. https://marathondessables.co.uk/what-to-expect/

“”stumbled back…Everything felt wrong. His brain felt wrong…begging for people to pay attention…exited the lecture hall in a daze…“freaking out in my brain,””…and so on. I’m not sure what audience they are trying to appeal to with this article, but it sounds like every paragraph includes a reference to some kind of mental health concern. I suspect that it will not appeal to those to whom they hope it appeals for that reason.

That was just stupid. But to blame your heat stroke on climate change is mental illness. Yes, this man needs help, fast.

I spent a summer working at a talc mine in Death Valley, California, in between college semesters. I pulled into Furnace Creek one afternoon in August, 1974, and spent half an hour in the Caterpillar dealer’s equipment yard loading bulldozer parts. The thermometer on an outside wall read 142 F. There wasn’t a drop of sweat on my skin anywhere. It evaporated that fast. I went into the office to finish the acceptance paperwork and was completely drenched in sweat in less than a minute.

And, BTW, are composting toilets to code in California?

Compost turns poop into methane. Using a composting toilet instead of a flush toilet means the methane does not get captured into the local gas network at the water treatment plant. Composting toilets increase one’s carbon footprint. Bye, hey….virtue signaling!

And take responsibility for your stupid choices instead of blaming others. It’s a lot easier to fix your stupid. It’s impossible to fix others. This is what mature homo sapiens do.

And no, I do NOT feel sorry for him if he is unable to differentiate between daily temperature shifts, which are weather items, and long-term weather cycles that generate climate change, and which have been going on since the dragonflies had 30-inch wingspans.

Why is worse about Peter’s little cry story is that when he started the temp was 105F and he was perfectly happy to allow himself and his family to begin the trek.

Then the next day it is 5F higher and rather than accepting things like:

  • I am unfit
  • I didn’t carry enough drinking water
  • I shouldn’t have gone out in this weather anyway
  • All of the above

he instead jumps straight to GLOBAL WARMING RUINED MY HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

Face it, if Peter was alive in any other period of history small children would be throwing rocks at him.

It is quite sad to see emotionally disturbed or sanity challenged individuals venting in public. It is even sadder to see supposed adults give them a platform to express their illness to the public!
I am reminded of a man about my own age who I would often see around town back in the Bay Area. He had a trust fund and a minder when he was out during the day, but his favorite activity was spending hours at night pushing the crosswalk buttons of a major intersection then crossing the street to do it again, and again, and again…
His state may have been largely drug and self induced, but it sounds little different from Peter’s obsessive compulsive behavior or Greta’s OCD rants and tirades! Why are the ignorant and the insane lecturing humanity? It must serve someone’s agenda to push fear and panic on the public, just as the virus was used to do far more damage than it could alone!

Yes Mr Lee, mental health is like physical health, we are all susceptible to occasional periods of illness. However we can all work on fitness, and resilience, but it doesn’t help when articles such as that above attempt to normalise a state of derangement as if that is an acceptable way to address challenges in our life. Even if, as in this case, the primary challenge is imaginary (and also such a cliche: the world’s going to end because of human immorality – it’s just so flaming predictable!).

This story is an excellent example of perception versus reality. It starts with living in a wealthy, high density, coastal urban city where everything necessary for life and comfort is available with no need to understand how or where it came from. For example the natural gas fueling the dryer simply arrives at the appliance on demand. This is the first major detachment from reality. The writer never needs to know about geology, engineering, economics, drilling, fracking, compressors, pipelines and all the safety equipment and procedures that bring that gas to his dryer, so instead he fixates on the CO2 emitted when the dryer runs and the mythical impact that tiny puff of plant food will have on the climate.
Then, after having consumed an endless stream of fictional catastrophism about climate and CO2, he interprets a hot day hiking as evidence of the globe burning to a cinder.

This is how CAGW mythology spreads. People are not, at their core, rational. Once removed from the realities of how the world really works, and insulated from the highly dangerous outcomes of their unfounded conclusions and poor decisions they allow fear of ghosts and demons to govern their minds and conduct. This will not be cured by explaining all the ways this train of thought is completely negated by evidence and real world outcomes. Never mind that every measure of human wellbeing has consistently improved over a century and a half of modestly rising CO2 and global temperature. One experience of heat and sweat during an outdoor hike is proof that the end is nigh.

I read your 1st paragraph and and said, “YES”! Too many urban AND suburban kids and most of their parents have no idea how things work behind the scenes.

Water – out of the faucet from a hole in the ground
Meat/food – made in the back of the grocery store
Gasoline – FM – F…g Magic
Electricity – FM
Internet – FM

I noticed the author said not one word about where his composted feces went. Do you think the County Health Dept. would approve of his disposal plans? Can you imagine the City of New York where everyone used composting toilets? Where would the “shite” go? Would you eat food grown with it as fertilizer? These folks don’t even realize that covid is not a real pandemic, not until you begin gathering all the human waste together and grow food in it!

I wonder If this fellow would love to do his 8 hour shift doing physics and then come home and grab the hoe handle to weed his 40 acres of food for the winter by moonlight! And don’t get me started about “consensus” as an end-point in scientific discourse.

I have actually tried very hard to eliminate “feel” or “believe” from my vocabulary except in specific circumstances where they are the appropriate word, in favor of “think”. Too many use one of those when they should be saying “think” – but it’s also indicative of how they are approaching an issue. “I feel this is a good solution” suggests an emotional evaluation, not a rational one.

For Peter I would prescribe Cymbalta, and Lithium, and Prozac, and Valium, and Thorzine, and beneficial electro shock therapy to the temples, (One Flew Over…) and a straight jacket, and a rubber room, and a doctor, and a shrink, and a therapist, and a social worker, and a psychologist.

45 years of beneficial global warming has created the best climate since the Little Ice Age centuries, yet some people are unable to enjoy our wonderful climate.

If global warming continues, along with the greening of our planet, they see a climate change emergency.

Have they learned nothing from living with global warming for the past 45 years?

Anyone with sense would see that another +1 degree C. of warming would be even better than the past +1 degree C. of warming.

The actual warming since 1975 has been beneficial.

Warming has been greatest at the higher, colder latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, mainly in the colder months of the year and mainly at night.

Who are we to tell people living in Siberia and Alaska that their warmer winter nights are bad news?

Air pollution over Asian cities is a real environmental problem.

But carbon dioxide is not pollution — it is the staff of life on our planet.

The C3 plants used for food would have optimum growth with 800 to 1,2000 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere, just llike plants grown inside CO2 enriched greenhouses.

Optimum plant growth will support more life on our planet.

Anyone who opposes more CO2 in the atmosphere is anti-life.

Meanwhile, climate alarmists want to spend a huge amount of money on THEMSELVES, for a less reliable solar and wind electric grid, while completely ignoring the one billion poor people on our planet with no electricity at all.

This article is disturbing in that the wife does not recognize this person’s decline into depression over something he can’t control. She’s just going along with it. Those two boys of theirs are not happy campers, not at all. Right in the first sentence, the phrase “out of his mind” is a blatant clue to Kulmer’s descent into this vat that he’s put himself into and is dragging his family right along with him. He can’t control what the planet does and he knows it instinctively but refuses to accept the reality of it. Does he need help? Yes, but he will never accept it nor will he respond to it.

If that wife of his had any sense, she’d put the kids and their pets and “stuff” into the car and get the h-e-double hockey sticks out of there without looking back. She must have the patience of a saint. Her little rebellious acts (using more hot water than usual for the dishes) say she knows what’s going on but hasn’t gotten to a point where she should just bail out.

This is sad, and I feel sorry for her and her kids, but NOT for him. He must have a massively weak ego if he can’t accept the fact that he can NOT control what this planet does. He is NOT worth the time she’s spending to accommodate his madness, and those kids do NOT deserve to be subjected to it.

So much extra if you read between the lines here.

Take this little passage;

He’d met Sharon at Harvard. They’d moved to New York so she could earn a teaching degree. For a while, before returning to school, Peter had made good money on Wall Street writing code

So they both went to Harvard, but she had to move to New York to get into teaching and he had to code. Strongly suggests that Sharon got herself a degree from Harvard that was worthless at supporting her in the real world and that Peter was either a re-trained ex coal miner or also got himself a degree that was largely useless in the job market.

As for his eldest son, the apparent nihilistic one, did anyone ever consider that the reason he was so apathetic towards life was that his demented parents had decided to make him poo in the 3rd World? This isn’t a teen who has shrugged towards the world because of terminal global warming, this is a boy who has realised he is never going to be able to bring a girl home until he moves out.

“Hey Sexy. My parents are away tonight. Want to come over? We could watch some movies, maybe play some X-Box, maybe… fool around?”
“Sure Braird. Sounds… nawdy.”
“Yeah, come over at 7, but ummm… go to the bathroom at your place first.”
