Record cold weather in China sends power demand through the roof

From Reuters

By Muyu XuShivani Singh

BEIJING (Reuters) – Exceptionally cold weather sweeping through China has caused a huge increase in power demand in the world’s largest energy consumer and hampered transportation.

Frigid weather across north Asia has caught utilities and liquefied natural gas importers off guard as demand for power lowered inventories and pushed spot prices to record levels.

China’s Central Meteorological Station released the first cold warning in 2021 earlier in the week to several regions. Cities such as the eastern port city of Qingdao recorded the lowest temperature in history and the capital city Beijing had coldest day since the 1960s on Jan 7.

At least nine provincial grid systems in northern China saw peak power load hitting historic highs this week, according to China’s State Grid.

China’s industrial belt, where a stunning manufacturing recovery from the coronavirus pandemic boosted energy demand, experienced a temporary power crunch in the last cold snap in December.

(Graphic: China’s power demand:

“The (latest) historic peak load came as extreme cold weather increased demand for electricity-powered heating facilities, which account for 48.2% of total load,” an official from the State Grid told state television on Thursday.

China has been replacing coal burning with gas- or electricity-fueled heating devices as part of a campaign to combat air pollution in its smog-prone northern regions.

The only remaining coal-fired power plant in Beijing, managed by state-backed China Huaneng Group as a backup power source, resumed operations two weeks ago in order to meet the surging electricity demand.

Gas demand also surged in northern parts of China, where gas is now a dominant heating fuel for more than 20 million homes, with prices touching multi-year highs last month even as the country imported record levels of LNG cargoes.

Ummmm…. doesn’t that kind of violate a couple of laws of physics or something. Just askin’ because my cat has been pestering me for an extra blanket since Dec. 20, and it isn’t even very chilly so far. Mid to low 30s (Fahrenheit) is not a particularly chilly temp level, y’know. Now, if I find that we’ve had enough snow to make my neighbor dig out my front steps, because the snow is piled up against my storm door, that’s a respectable snowfall. And cold, too. Haven’t seen a really bad winter snow since 2011, and that one made me glad I could stay home.

nyolci’s fraudulent red herring sophistry where allegedly their global warming priests predicted it would get cold…

Where!?

Those press release shysters only predict natural variability after they get slapped repeatedly by Mother Nature’s refusal to keep warming.

  • Snow will be a memory.
  • People will cook eggs on sidewalks.
  • The lands will dry and turn to desert.
  • Other lands, they’re never clear which, will flood.
  • Storms will be bigger.
  • Storms will be more powerful.
  • The Polar ice caps will melt.
  • ° Well, Antarctica’s stubborn ice will slide into the sea. So only the Arctic’s ice will melt.
  • Greenland’s ice melt will cause huge sea level rise.
  • Spring will come earlier every year.
  • Winter will come later.
  • Summer will last longer.
  • Plants and wildlife are unable to adjust and will go extinct.
  • Fresh water will become scarce.
  • Wind turbines will replace nuclear, coal and LNG.
  • Solar arrays will replace nuclear, coal and LNG.
  • Electric vehicles can replace all fossil fueled vehicles including planes, trucks, ships, tanks, all cars, whatnot.
  • Global Warming will pass a tipping point escalating rapidly.
  • etc. etc.

Each time, the predictors failed, often repeatedly, and alarmists were forced to issue new pal reviewed research that allows for global warming failures and reversals.

Never mind that weather people and non-alarmists have repeatedly pointed to history as indicators for the future. Something alarmists especially alarmists who start their global warming during the 20th Century’s cold period, have refused to accept.

If the polar regions were warmer during the Holocene Climate Optimum but global temperatures were not warmer than today, this means that the rest of the world must have been colder than today. Somehow, this all occurred when sea levels were much higher than today. Could you explain the underlying physics which would warm up the polar regions but cool the rest of the world?

Yeah, I know you doubt science. Even the fundamental laws of physics. This is a wonderfully inconsistent position. You would see it if you were able to use your brain. Literally anything you do is a basic test for these laws. And somehow we’ve never heard of accidents where they at least suspect that -say- the Law of Energy Conservation was violated.

What is it about “progressives”? Well, they think that HEAT creates cold weather, which is a serious violation of the basic laws of physics. Cold is, to put it simply, the ABSENCE of heat.
If you try to ‘splain it to them, their eyes glaze over and they stick their fingers in their ears.
They simply can’t handle the TRUTH: Hoomans have NO control over weather or the climate or anything else that this planet wants to whack us with. It interferes with their need for control of stuff that they can’t control, like trying to figure out how to stop volcanoes from erupting.
Speaking of volcanoes, we have a bunch going off. Aren’t those associated gases the kind that tend to block the Sun and reduce its heat transmissions???? Just askin’, because my cat is worried that blankets will run out before long.

What is it about progressives? Are they required to have their sense of humor surgically removed?

No. Most of them never developed one in the first place.

Remember humans are basically primates. Primates express nervousness by ‘smiling’. It signals ‘I don’t know what your intent is, so just as a reminder, here are my teeth that I may bite you with’.

Humans have more advance communication methods. ‘Smiling’ at each other became ‘Hey, I am nervous, and you are nervous, so… neither of us actually wants to fight… so… GOOD!’ and rather than smiling to express nervousness we would smile to request friendship.

The extension of this is that laughter became a way of causing mutual smiling and defusing any aggression, so having a good sense of humour became something that was useful when attempting to interact with strangers.

So why do Conservatives have sense of humour?

Because are people who want to be left alone to do what is best for them and those they love and care for. They don’t agree unless they can see mutual advantage.

(You should paint your house white – reflects the hot sun = Good idea, thanks for the suggestion. You should paint your house Green in honour of Greta’s climate protest = yeah… no. Waste of paint, no thanks.)

So because they are constantly dealing with people who don’t automatically agree with them they learn to joke with each other to first establish some common ground.

Progressives by comparison believe they know the correct answers, that the world would be a better place if only they were in charge and everything should be fair and just (provided they are the one’s enforcing the rules). People who don’t agree with them are clearly WRONG and are not to be interacted with AT ALL.

Hence they have little need for humour because they see no need to interact with strangers who are clearly WRONG in everything they say.

Also jokes are deeply offensive. Hashtag safe space. Hashtag snow flake. Hashtag internet gas.

griff is still crowing because some town in Siberia broke it’s old warmest day record by 1C last summer.

I’ve never seen griff doing anything like this. Single occurences of extreme weather is just variability. You may have mixed up these with those when griff pointed out persistent and long going trends.

Anyway, nobody hear denies that the weather changes,

Nobody claimed you deny that. We claim you deny science (and climate change).

The only source that supports the claim that CO2 drives climate are the models.

Well, no. FYI deniers never cease to surprise normal people. Okay, quickly: models are just a tool of climate science and quite a bulk of its results are actually not model results. FOR FCUKIN EXAMPLE the Hockey Stick. That’s a reconstruction, and it’s not based on modelling. Another result that is just partially model-based is the attribution of already experienced warming (ie. that’s why we know it’s anthropogenic). The basic energy-accounting is quite clear without modelling but models reinforce what we know.

Not to mention the fact that over the historical record there is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperature.

Yes, there’s a very good correlation (that Middleton guy or whoever tried to claim no correlation), furthermore we know it without modelling.

The Earth is cooling after a couple of decades of an unusually active Sun coinciding with cycles in their warm phases. There is a lag from when the Sun turns quiet and atmospheric temperatures start cooling. During the warm phase, water vapor increases and as it makes its way to the Arctic the temperatures increase as the air can hold more heat with higher humidity. But ultimately this will find its way out of the system as the polar regions radiate the heat out to space.

La Niña has taken the source of very warm water moving into the North Pacific away and it is just a matter of time before everything cools. The problem is as the winters get colder people suffer more.. a lot more. And they are coming. Let’s just hope there isn’t a big volcano go off or it can be catastrophic.

No. This is the scientific position. But I have a question. This may be your hunch feeling but how do you have evidence? Didn’t it occur to you that anything about solar activity or its connection with temperature/climate (and the reconstruction of these) is also the same scary science you claim to be cheating/”notsettled”/fcukknows?

  • Okay, you deniers never miss an opportunity to be inconsistent. You deniers always claim (beside others) that “this is just variability”. But how on earth you can say anything about variability beforehand (“predicting”) if (quote) “You can’t predict variability”?
  • Nevertheless, variability as a statistical phenomenon CAN be predicted (not the actual events), so you were not just inconsistent but wrong in your specific claim.
  • But the best part comes now: I didn’t even claim it was variability that was predicted. The polar vertex split was predicted, you doofus 😉 I only claimed, as a side note, that it was PART of variability. ‘Cos you love variability so much. I wanted to get a good and soothing day for you.

So, do you believe this Chinese cold snap is caused by increased co2 or not?
Are you talking about natural variability in the weather?
Are you claiming the temp spike in the stratosphere – therefore the split polar vortex – therefore the china cold snap is caused by increased co2?
What the f**k are you trying to say by this?……

The direct cause is a sudden warming in the stratosphere, just to make deniers even more confused. Mother Nature has a lovely sense of humor”

What is your point ?

No, and well, I didn’t claim that. I only claimed that the reason would confuse you, as it really did, see below:

You should’ve realized so far… You’re slow, Mike, you’re slow! I just pointed out that you deniers would treat it as an obvious evidence for why AGW was wrong. But the thing is that this cold spell is entirely in line with climate science, it doesn’t invalidate it, and you should be talking about the often repeated “variability” now.

Still as confused as ever, I see. Just as I was instructing you on another thread; before you even begin to describe the anthropogenic effects of local climates, you must first falsify the null hypothesis. It must be the dominant hypothesis until you can. That’s what you’re seeing, natural variation. You just acknowledged it when you mentioned “variability”. It was variability that made it slightly warmer and variability that will make it colder. However the general trend of the Holocene has been gradual cooling. Humans have not made any apparent or measurable difference to that trend at all.

You lost the debate before you even began … out of your own mouth.

Just as I was instructing you on another thread

Oops, was that instructing? I thought it was bullshiting 😉

you must first falsify the null hypothesis

Ugh, it WAS bullshiting, I was right.
Rory, if I was talking to you, I would speak slowly, always ascertaining you understand each and every word, even articles and copulas etc. I’m not talking to you but you should know I write this very slowly for the same effect 🙂
The null hypothesis has been falsified already, see https://climate.nasa.gov/climate_resources/26/graphic-the-ipccs-four-key-findings/ the first highlight, it says (with different words) that the null hypothesis has a probability of 5% to explain the warming of the last 50 years. This comes from the IPCC. So stop whining about this at last.

You just acknowledged it when you mentioned “variability”

Yeah, ‘cos you love that, don’t you? It’s like multiculturalism, you must love that too.

Yes it was instruction. I can’t be held responsible for your inability to grasp basic concepts of science. You should pay more attention to the help others on this platform have been offering you, free of charge.

it says (with different words) that the null hypothesis has a probability of 5% to explain the warming of the last 50 years.

Actually, it says no such thing. Just because you can’t decipher the baby talk NASA has provided to true believers like yourself, doesn’t mean you can ‘paraphrase’ it to rewrite the meaning. The null hypothesis cannot be falsified by statistical artifacts and other projections. To falsify a premise, relying on real data, one must use empirical evidence, not projections … but you Lefties are always projecting, aren’t you?

An inappropriate link to a pseudo-science web site is not an argument. Either provide a falsification of the null hypothesis or concede.

You just acknowledged it when you mentioned “variability”

Yeah, ‘cos you love that, don’t you? It’s like multiculturalism, you must love that too.

Sorry again, I didn’t know that. And what else did I not know? That they didn’t use empirical evidence. Now I know they used data they had pulled out of thin air. Climate science is devastated… 😉

an instance of the earth venting heat into space?

Earth is constantly venting heat into space in one form or another (via heat radiation), even on the bright side. So in this sense the answer is trivially yes, specifically no (ie. this is not the only place and time that Earth is venting heat). Anyway, the truth is that the significance of this phenomenon is beyond me, we should ask experts.

Storm Filomena has blanketed parts of Spain in heavy snow, with half of the country on red alert for more on Saturday.

Yes, the Left is on a feeding frenzy over Trump and the fair-weather Republicans are jumping onboard their train.

It’s a sight to behold. It’s mob psychology in action.

A lot of people have lost their senses. A lot of sensible people have lost their senses.

That’s what happens when the Mob drives the train. People get caught up in the rhetoric and can’t think straight. Which is the purpose of the rhetoric, in the first place.

Human minds are easily manipulated if you have the right tools. The radical Democrats have the right tools. Mainly, they have the Media on their side.

Without the Media pushing the Democrat lies far and wide and 24-hours a day, the Democrats would be nothing. But with the propagarda machine behind them, you see what they can do.

Some people can see through the propaganda and some people can’t. At the present time it looks like those who can’t, outnumber those who can.

Too bad for us.

But things can change.

I sure hope so. I’m one of those who does see what’s happening and watching it unfold in front of me is literally painful … and snippets of Shakespeare keep flashing in my head like electric shocks … “The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to” … When I can see the hings you mention taking place so obviously and I can watch others, just as obviously pretending not to see, I have the impulse to throttle someone. I also grieve the loss of real good getting accomplished under this president. He’s a flawed man, but essentially good.

“He’s a flawed man, but essentially good.”

I agree. And his flaws are small. They just look big when the Left describes them.

Trump is the most vetted president we have ever had, and despite his political enemies pulling every dirty trick in the book, they still don’t have anything on him.

Now, they claim Trump was inciting violence on Jan. 6. But if you listen to his speech before the march on the Capital took place, you will hear Trump calling for *peaceful* demonstrations.

I suppose that’s why the Media and the Democrats don’t replay Trump’s speech. Trump does not say what they claim he says. Trump does not incite a riot. If he had, they would be playing his speech over and over again.

So the Media censor his speech to keep people from knowing the truth. The Leftwing Media are dispicable and dangerous because they lie and cause division among the American people.

Rory Forbes
Reply to  Tom Abbott
January 11, 2021 11:16 am

Yes, the first thing I did when they made those claims was find a source with his speech … the whole speech. He said the exact opposite of what they claim. They did exactly the same thing over and over with his purported endorsement of hate groups. That was even included in the 1st debate where the moderator, Chris Wallace began acting like the grand inquisitor of the auto de fé.

There was a tie the media slipped in a few lies here and there and apologized profusely when caught … “mea culpa, it’ll never happen again”, they’d say. Now they just openly lie in Goebbels’ well practiced method.

The levels of cowardice are unprecedented in US politics. I feel as though the Left are beginning to make their big move to overwhelm Western society. Xi is unique as a leader of China. He’s not introverted and xenophobic as they have always been. He’s actively making his move on the world. Trump was in his way. You can fill in the blanks with the rest of the scenario. This conspiracy is not theoretical. It’s well documented and supported by volumes of evidence.

Even with al this – you guessed it! 2020 is another warmest year EVUH!

But you have to remember that the dire heating of the earth doesn’t happen where there are people to check, who live there. All this OMG heating is in unpopulated places like both the poles, the mid ocean basins, maybe Siberia.

From that chart in the article it looks like China has had no warming during the entire time the record covers.

CO2 is falling down on the job in China, too, and China is where most of the CO2 originates. They have abundant supplies of CO2 in the air, yet the temperatures are not climbing like alarmist claim.

How do we explain this discrepancy with the Human-caused Climate Change narrative?

China’s dispute with Australia over coal imports wasn’t even mentioned even though recent news items indicate widespread power outages in China’s industrial centers due to lack of coal.
I also question the statement of a “stunning uptick” in economic activity in China with the complete pullout of all of Japan’s investments with subsidies from the Japanese government. The news I resd says China is close to economic collapse and will never reach past levels of pre-pandemoc economic activity. Indeed, most experts predict that within three years, China will no longer be an economic power!
And I hope they’re right!

Three years is more like when the current trend reverses and they start to slide. Large economies are like super tankers. They are slow to turn, unless they hit an iceberg or run aground. But that same momentum means when they turn, it will require big changes to fix the problem.
Ten years from now they will be in bad shape due to their extreme demographic problems. Command and control is great, until it isn’t. And when it isn’t, it is extremely “isn’t”. Any one still remember Mao’s “Great Leap Forward”. It was the lemming version.
