Amazing what you can infer from watching a big cat grab a passing snack.
Climate-Change-Induced Conflict? Rare Footage Captured of Jaguar Killing Ocelot at Waterhole
By WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY JANUARY 6, 2021
In what may be a sign of climate-change-induced conflict, researchers have captured rare photographic evidence of a jaguar killing another predatory wild cat at an isolated waterhole in Guatemala.
In the footage, a male jaguar arrives near the waterhole and apparently lies in wait for an hour. It lets a potentially dangerous prey animal, a large tapir, pass by, but when the ocelot stops to drink, the jaguar pounces and carries off the smaller predator.
…
“Although these predator-on-predator interactions may be rare, there may be certain instances when they become more prevalent, and one of those could be over contested water resources,” said Daniel Thornton, a WSU assistant professor and co-author on the paper. “People don’t often think of tropical systems as being dry, but in many parts of the world, tropical rains are quite seasonal, and with climate change, some of these tropical ecosystems are expected to become even more seasonal. The more isolated and rare water resources become, the more they’re going to become hotspots of activity.”
…
While some research has noted signs of ocelot in jaguar feces, until now, no known images have been captured of a jaguar directly killing an ocelot.
…
“We have evidence that many things are happening related to climate change, but we might not be aware of every detail, of every consequence,” said Lucy Perera-Romero, a WSU doctoral student and lead author on the study. “For example, in these beautiful, green forests, we may not be aware that water flow is a serious issue. It could be another source of mortality—apart from deforestation, from hunting, and from everything else that we do.”
…
I mean, it could have been a jaguar driven to desperation by the ravages of climate change. Or it could have been a hungry big cat getting tired of waiting for a snack, grabbing the first small animal unlucky enough to pass too near.
Yet more proof that ph.d stands for piled high and deep!
In the case of Lucy Perera-Romero, I’d say Piled Higher & Deeper

Yes, it seems that now you can say WHATEVER THE F**K YOU WANT as long as you attach ”climate change” on the end of it. Some people will actually believe him.
This is absolutely and utterly contemptible garbage and the ”assistant proff” should be dragged and made to kneel blindfolded before a committee of science integrity and stripped of his position for all eternity for even suggesting one of the most blatantly ridiculous hypotheses in human history before he is tarred and feathered and made to crawl from town to town wearing an ”I’m a dangerous idiot” sign around his neck.
For the education of the proff…
Hyenas kill and eat lions
Lions kill and eat hyenas
Lions kill leopards
Lions kill cheetahs
Wild dogs kill tigers
Wild dogs kill hyenas
Hyenas kill whatever they can
Snakes kill crocs
crocs kill snakes
Dogs kill cats
cats kill dogs
snakes eat cats and dogs
all of these things eat humans.
Climate change?
As a matter of fact jaguars even kill crocs:
How’s that for a climate change?
You missed one Mike – his request for more funding for further ‘research’ is denied.
Then again, with the way the world has been turned upside down of late, the request just might be granted. Might help pay for the sign.
Difficult to discern where the climate change shoehorning ends and where the brainwashing begins.
They overlap completely. It is a belief that God created the world – including climate – as absolutely perfect. Any change is only for worse. In other words, we see creationism in action at Washington State.
No, this is evolutionists vs devolutionists who are, in fact, one and the same “secular” cult. Creationists know that the world is imperfect, and science (i.e. near-frame philosophy and practice) is a tool to understand and manage the chaos (“evolution”) including life. Creationists believe that the Earth is a proving ground, and their religion (i.e. moral code) is a blueprint to guide their evolution. Evolutionists, for their part, receive their religious, or rather quasi-religious (“ethical”) guidance from mortal gods.
Science removed itself utterly from philosophy when Galileo made physical theory dependent upon the verdict of observation and experiment.
Natures, essences, and axiomatic givens were left entirely behind. Science is now orthogonal to philosophy and religion.
Evolutionist and evolutionism are terms invented by believers in their attempt to lower science to the level of faith. Curiously post-modern cultural relativists have essayed the similar task of lowering science to their level of text.
Anyone who receives their behavioral guides (morals), rather than deriving them (ethics), receives them from mortal authorities, whether the recipients call themselves religious or not.
God is an empty set. It has no observables. God has only what some self-appointed authority says god has, which what includes nothing objective.
I find it curious that the almighty ‘god’ that produced the universe and everything in it did not also create whatever changes the original product.
It’s like the ‘miracle’ when someone is saved from a disaster but ‘god’ had nothing to do with creating the disaster.
The jaguar doesn’t look underfed, so the claim that it’s feeding on the ocelot because it is desperate doesn’t stand up.
Predators hiding near watering holes to nab a snack is as old as predators and watering holes.
…and the tapir wasn’t competing for the water hole
it’s one thing to be the idiot that wrote this….it’s another to have to read it
Who are you quoting or paraphrasing, Latitude?
Maybe the jaguar just likes the taste of ocelot. Like a hot fudge sundae with crushed nuts.
How do you know the ocelot was a male ?
This is, of course, complete, unadulterated climate carp. It’s just about a larger predator eating a smaller one – who’d have thunk? I recall many years ago seeing a BBC documentary about tigers in India and, guess what?, the film-makers saw a tiger had half-eaten a leopard which they had previously filmed very much alive and healthy. No AGW inference was made (but of course it would now – the BBC wouldn’t miss that one).
All sorts of predators – from a wide range of families from fish to mammals – have even been observed eating their own kind. They ain’t that fussy when easy food is available.
Yeah, I saw that documentary too. It was really good, and quite the eye-opener. The tiger was traveling with two cubs, one had some kind of injury and was lost to the cameramen but, when they followed the mother and the remaining cub into territory with the leopard, yes the tiger killed the leopard. The conclusion was that she wasn’t taking any chances on the leopard killing her cub. Sounds plausible.
they did it on all jurassic park movies too…
I should also add Ian, that after the word mammals, you could have added “(including humans)”. It was called “long pig”. Maybe it still is?
Writing such BS is Climate Change based.
Challenge of idiot-award continues 😀
Only climate agenda AI with high speed computers can keep up with all the climate scare combinations at this point in the Climate Crusades.
Why did the Chicken cross the road?
Computer Says: Climate Change
At least it is Artificial reasoning but it is far from Intelligent
ROFL 🙂
Where there is artificial intelligence, there also must be artificial stupidity. Society being what it is, one expects instances of the latter to out number the former.
This article is full of things that I love: climate change linked to BS, hyphenated names, woke Latina (Latinx) PhD student that came from 3rd World Country (TM) using funds from her rich family.
Law of jungle been around a bit longer than the AGW scientists.
OMG.!
Next thing you know, dogs will be chasing cats..
All because of climate change !!!
And the mouse ran up the clock. A scientific myth that asserts identity. Dogs don’t chase cats don’t chase mice. That said, save a bird, whack a wind turbine.
beagle next door likes (liked?) to chase cats. he’s stopped with mine since one of mine turned on him hard.
….. and living together too:
climate change- the new Great Satan
And cats will be suing big oil with the help of the NRDC and Sierra Club with help from the Trial Lawyers Association.
Lions kill cheetahs, in Africa. The theory was that lions and cheetahs compete for the same prey. But now, I’ll bet this happens because of climate change.
I’m surprised that the folks at WSU failed to see the other evidence of desperation due to AGW- the ocelot, desperate for resources, obviously committed suicide by jaguar. Lucy in particular should have seen that “detail”, she knows the evidence is all around her.
HHHMMMM a top of the food chain predator catches kills a predator farther down the food chain and it is all due to climate change. That is about the dumbest idea I have heard today. Predators will almost always catch kill and and eat a lesser predator that can compete with them for the resources. This is as old as time itself.
Donate to World Walrus Foundation. Together, we can teach jaguars to eat Greens….
But veganism is a first-order forcing of [catastrophic] [anthropogenic] climate cooling… warming… change. Flatulence is far and away the greater source of a potent greenhouse gas and environmental pollution.
A friend’s dog, “Bear”, did the same thing when another smaller dog started raiding Bear’s food on a regular basis. Bear wasn’t starving, but he lay in wait for the smaller dog to appear, and then killed him with a bite to the neck. This is how nature works, and it’s no surprise that the same folks who deny natural climate change also deny that this kind of attack happens all the time regardless of wether or not resources are readily available.
An opportunist took advantage of an opportunity, well bless my cotton socks
Foolish obsevers overlook the fact that tapirs are herbivores that spend inordinate time foraging &, as such, have evolved an extremely thick neck to prevent predators from catching hold of them for bringing down while they feed. Jaguars are feline predators that hunt by tackling the neck. Unlike the observers, the O.P. jaguar apparently knew it was wasting it’s stake out time & energy resources on any tapir since more reliable prey would come to the water.
Some WUWT commentators might be inclined to think the jaguar passed on the tapir because it, being a vegan, tastes less savory than the carnivor oscelot. I can’t assess the validity of that opinion, but it may be true according to the chauvinist quip in Spanish about skinny women : “El sabor es en los huesos” (the flavor is in the bones).
I know it’s funny to snipe at this stuff, but really, my God what will happen if this kind of nonsense continues. And it’s growing bolder. There are actually people walking around with Ph.D. credentials who are nothing more than hucksters milking the ignorance of the government and general populous. This is disastrously confounding to the advancement of knowledge. Nothing will pass without redoubled investigations. This conclusion is obviously false, but what of the more subtle and intricate phenomenon. It’s awful.
OT..

Must have because of jaguars eating smaller animals or something
(see how I brought it back on topic 😉 )

That’ll force the jaguars to do .. something… not sure what yet, until they do it… !
Or it could be that ocelots are more of a delicacy than tapirs. Perhaps the authors of this detritus could go ask the jaguar.
Jaggy wanted a snack, rather than paying for a 3 course meal.
Jaguars are such cute and cuddly animals
Just like polar bears
Competition for dwindling water sources? Yeah, that’s the ticket when the jaguar bypassed a larger, more dangerous potential rival for water. She’s getting her PhD in B.S. Speculation. From her ending quote, humans must stop doing everything.
Food is food. Why would a jaguar hesitate to take out an ocelot if it found that it had the drop on the other? There is no professional courtesy in nature. Who do they think takes out the ocelots, hawks? More likely it is boas and larger cats.
they have never seen my small house cats eye me if I start breathing funny. predator kills and eats predator….
I expect the BBC will be all over this, but then, they missed an opportunity to link this piece of predator-on-predator action to climate change.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-26413101
I guess the Asia desk hadn’t read the memo back then.
Jim Steele, natural animal behavior being fabricated into a climate lie cleanup on aisle seven, please.
That reminds me of one of the stupidest events ever done that caused a supermarket’s “wet cleanup on aisle seven” message to echo throughout any store. Some stupid rummy had decided that in the busy Christmas shopping rush, an open area in the produce department would host one of those extra item, pyramid shaped end cap displays. This particular one was build out of boxes with glass jars of olive oil, and at the top of the pyramid, yep, you guessed it, the top layer was ringed with individual bottles that had been removed from a box, now longer present. When a distraught mother chasing her young child crashed her partially filled cart into the pyramid, the whole thing shook and I’d guess about 15 bottles of olive oil crashed to the floor and broke, the olive oil running everywhere. That wet cleanup was a nasty mess, no doubt, but I left the scene just shaking my head about how stupid was the “manager” who designed that end cap.
But maybe we climate change Dee Nye Arghs are to blame for this event, as well. Because we encouraged people to have babies and feed them food at Christmas time. Well you really should feed them almost every day, if you can.
Pure bloviating. Ranks right with the fires are caused by climate change stuff.
Predators regularly kill predators that might be competition. Especially, smaller predators. Equal sized predators may fight, but often the losing side runs off.
If the water source is so contested, why would the jaguar allow a larger animal that drinks more water to access the water?
South American Tapirs’ average weight is 225kg, (496 lbs.) and can weigh as much as 320kg (710 lbs.).
Jaguars are frequently ambush predators. Jaguars are not stupid enough to tackle much larger animals.
At an average weight of 90.7 kg. to 113 kg. (100 lbs. to 250 lbs.), not many jaguars have the size to attack large prey.
Jaguars eat a large array of animals from deers to caimans, boas, wild hogs and one of their favorite are dogs.
I think they can be opportunistic but they also like the variety like we do.
Bet they don’t go stalking cauliflowers or brussel spouts !
This may have been a Baird’s tapir. Wiki says they can range in weight up to 400 kg. Although adult jaguars and large American crocs are capable of preying on an adult Baird’s, the outcomes are often in the tapir’s favor.
So I guess that when wolves were re-introduced to Yellowstone park many years ago and they killed lots of coyotes it must have been because of climate change….
Nope – it is simply that predators tend not to tolerate competition and will kill competitors whenever they get the chance. Lions have been observed killing hyenas many times and I’ve never heard anyone chalk it up to climate change.
The lions know that hyenas are always trying to eat lion Cubs to get rid of competition so they return the favor.
It is pretty pathetic that they would attempt to link this to Cc
Simply hoping to hitch a ride on the climate gravy train, and pushing the climate religion. Climate change does everything…. even when it doesn’t. Most importantly invoking it may help get that grant to tenure track success for a young PhD,
… and wittingly become purveyors of junk science.
There are multiple youtube videos of a Jaguars jumping into a river and coming out with a 5/6 foot foot Crocodilians in its mouth. Jaguars are the meanest thing in the jungle.
Oh no the climate apocalypse is upon us! 🙂
My six year old grandson would say ” everyone’s got to eat”.
I think I also saw that Jaguar helping polar bears chase walruses off that cliff
Climate change is mind bending
God forbid there my be natural hierarchies in the world. Isn’t nature supposed to be all soft and gentle with lots of rainbows and unicorns.
Until the proliferation of surveillance cameras 24/7 (in the last 5 years or so) we had no idea how often this type of attack happened. Perhaps they are less frequent now than in previous times? Who knows, but if they are less frequent that’ll be Climate Change as THE cause
Lets see I was collecting a Wildlife encyclopaedia magazine in the early ’70s One of the photos in the African Savannah section… A leopard eating a serval…. Super-predators eat whatever they feel like catching..
https://carnivora.net/predation-of-leopards-to-other-carnivores-t4074.html
Jaguars often take large crocodilians for food (Caimans)
They aren’t going to baulk at a smaller cat unless they don’t taste nice…
“While some research has noted signs of ocelot in jaguar feces, until now, no known images have been captured of a jaguar directly killing an ocelot.”
An intellectual giant tromping all over the pygmy footsteps of settled climate science.
Someone should write a paper on how climate change makes scientists more dishonest. They won’t be able to disagree with it because it’s about climate change.
