AGW Skeptic Marc Morano Receives DEATH THREAT From Sorbonne University Professor’s Email Account

Reposted from the NoTricksZone

By P Gosselin on 1. January 2021

“Even in the USA, we have friends waiting to massacre you”… “a killer will always be very close”

Two days ago, December 30th, anthropogenic global warming (AGW) science skeptic Marc Morano received yet another email threat through the Contact form submission on his Climate Depot site.

Climate researcher Prof. Jean-Luc Melice’s email account appears to be the source of a crude death threat aimed at prominent climate science skeptic, Marc Morano.

Professor at Sorbonne University

The death threat was made using an email account belonging to Prof. Jean-Luc Mélice, a distinguished climate modeling researcher and Director at the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute, Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

It’s the latest in a series of threats aimed at Marc Morano of Climate Depot, see background here.

What follows is the content of the most recent email threat, translated to the English (Warning: disturbing language):

From: Anonymous
Email: jlmelice@hotmail.fr
Message: So, the little shit of Morano the Moron, the negroid from Africa, you have to start shitting in your pants. With your filthy monkey mouth. As soon as you set foot in Europe, we’ll demolish with a baseball bat. Even in the USA, we have friends waiting to massacre you. You have no place to hide anymore. We have your address and we follow you step by step. You will never be able to rest… a killer will always be very close

Of course asshole, you do not have the intellectual level and the brain to understand french, wich is once again the language of every educated person…”

Not only does the message contain graphic threats of death, but also racial hatred. According to Prof. Jean-Luc Mélice’s LinkedIn account, he is a faculty member of the University of Sorbonne.

No comment from Prof. Mélice

In an attempt to clear up the matter, NTZ  sent an email directly to Prof. Mélice to ask if he was aware that his email account was being illegally misused:

Dear Prof. Mélice,

Please check your email account because it is being used to send out improper emails and messages, especially to people who are looking at climate science critically. Perhaps a hacker has breached your account and is using it illegally.
Hope this helps you out and that you are well.
Best wishes for 2021,

Dipl.-Ing. Pierre Gosselin
https://notrickszone.com

So far no reply has been received. Meanwhile Marc Morano said he would be taking the threats seriously and would contact the authorities.

Unfriendly comment to NTZ

Earlier on the same day, December 30th, NoTricksZone.com also had received an unfriendly comment from someone claiming to be Prof. Mélice:

In English:

So Pierre Gosselin,

Are you trying to play intelligent?

I believe the only solution for you is to quickly enter an old folks’ home.

I’d love for you to send me your CV, which must be lousy…as well as your scientific publications.

Regards, Jean-Luc Mélice.

Cyber-crime

It’s not clear whether the crude threats aimed at Marc Morano are really coming from Prof. Mélice, or from a hacker. If they aren’t, Prof. Mélice has the minimum obligation of making sure his account does not get used to commit criminal acts and hopefully will notify the authorities to get this situation under control.

And hopefully the authorities will act and execute justice.

Disgrace

Taken altogether, such threats originating from the email account of a professor is a disgrace to the academic community and to Paris-based Sorbonne University.

And it would be an even bigger disgrace if the authorities failed to act.

Along the same lines that Mike Lowe questions:

Prof. Jean-Luc Mélice, a distinguished climate modeling researcher

How does anyone become “distinguished” by writing or running programs that are constantly erroneous?

Even if it is only a student or postdoc using the alleged professor’s account; Sorbonne University should clean up their rolls.

I built a site with a contact form. No one who abused it ever gave a correct email address and of course the form itself is not accessed by ‘an email account’ but by an HTML form.

Pretty much as this form I am typing into right now has nothing to do with the email address I give below.

Tracing the origin of such abuse is something I have done professionally. It is non trivial.

Whoever posted that in the contact form was almost certainly not the person whose name appeared on the email and neither was his email account hacked.

It will be, by definition, a false flag abuser. Why he would pick a climate scientist to smear I will leave up to you to decide.

Correct. The email address typed into a web contact form has NO validity.

Reply to  leo smith
January 1, 2021 7:46 pm

If it was a direct email, that’s one thing, but like you said – anyone can enter ANY email address into a contact form. That doesn’t even have anything to do with security.

I think, suggesting the professor did this, or even that he could do anything about it (i.e. “check your account”), is going too far in this case. Contact the authorities and let them handle it. Frankly, given the evidence, I doubt anything will come of it.

I haven’t created any websites for a while but two reasons I never used a contact form is as you say any email addy can be used and secondly the sender does not retain a record of it unless they go through some trouble.
I always created a link that brought up their email program with the necessary details already entered and that way they easily retained a record of it and a semi valid email addy had to be used.

Unless they used a good proxy service, the IP address of their browser used will be in the form as well. At least I always coded my contact forms to capture that information. At the very least it gives a starting place to look for the idiot.

Tracing the origin of such abuse is something I have done professionally. It is non trivial.

I don’t know what the laws are like in France but where I am, internet service providers are required to keep their logs for a certain period of time. You and I can’t get at those logs but the police can if they have a warrant.

My advice to everyone is that anything you do on line can be traced. The poster boy for someone who should have known better would be General Petraeus. Over the years I’ve seen lots of examples of people tripped up by something they did on line, including some where I had no clue that lawyers (ie. not even the police) could get at the records.

Reply to  commieBob
January 2, 2021 12:45 am

The ISP would not log this – only the owner or administrator of the website could, as the senders IP address would have to be a valid return address and would be available to the web server for logging purposes. ISPS do not log packets passing through their systems, only people running servers log connections.

However that is still only half the story. Source IP addresses change with ISPS who dynamically issue them and rotate them among customers. So you need to

  • First ask the server who was talking to it when that form was filled in
  • Then ask the ISP which customer was online on that address at that time
  • Ascertain who might have been using that customers account. In the UK, BT customers have a right to access any wifi in the street that is part of the BT wifi everywhere scheme. (Wifi with FON). Or the guy might have used anyone of a billion public wifi spots, and expecting them to even log who is a big ask. Let alone retain the logs.
  • Hope that he wasn’t using a TOR network or a proxy in Russia because really that means the trail goes cold at the first proxy who chooses not to keep logs.

Sure if you have the resources and authority of a national intelligence operation…but realistaically, even when I was involved and it was only the first two conditions to be met we were paid a lot of money to track down an individual flooding a company with obscene mail. It took three of is from 10 in the moring to 4 in the afternoon, and the help of an internet cafe owner, to get the man responsible.

Ain’t gonna happen unless its national security.

And yet over the years I have read many accounts of people whose online activities were traced and who were tracked down. That said, the most common way they were caught is that someone in their group ratted them out. When you know who the suspect is, the tracing is much easier. Even if you think your message will automatically disappear, someone can still do a screen grab.

Another way people get caught is by their credit card numbers.

General Petraeus and Hillary Clinton both tried to hide their tracks. There are lots of ways to get tripped up.

My advice to my family, friends, and students still stands. The stuff you do on line can be traced. Act accordingly.

I would agree, however:

In an attempt to clear up the matter, NTZ sent an email directly to Prof. Mélice to ask if he was aware that his email account was being illegally misused:

The only information available from posting a form is the timestamp, IP address of the sender and certain characteristics of the browser used to send the form. Given the use of VPNs and/or TOR, that level of information is not very useful in validating exactly who did what… The publicly available tool set developed by the CIA can make the data stream appear to originate from anywhere on the planet.

However, there is the outstanding question of why, after being informed by NTZ of these possible misrepresentations of his position by an imposter, Prof. Mélice has been slow to respond with a denial that it was him, let alone a disavowal of the malicious intent of the possible misrepresentations.

Marc Morano is no stranger to such threats – here is one from 2012:

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/06/26/climate-craziness-of-the-week-i-get-mail/#comment-855842

“I will have a nice long drive up to DC and have a very short and unpleasant conversation with your ass if you don”t stop harrassing scientists.”

What a lame threat – 2 spelling mistakes AND a real lack of technical clarity.

Could be a death threat, but it’s so unclear – it could even be an amorous proposal.

Marc must be thinking “Death threat, my ass!”

I soon received an angry, threatening email from some lunatic who held me personally responsible for the flooding of the City of Prague.

I replied:
Dear Sir, you are entirely correct.
I am the One fully responsible for the flooding of Prague.
Now “run along”, or I’ll do it again.

On a more serious note, I am aware of real death threats and real acts of violence against climate skeptics by enviro radicals.

These are the “brown-shirts” of the radical enviro movement. They are uneducated, ignorant and fervent – the extreme end of the “useful idiot” spectrum – but they are a predictable result of the decades of lies by global warming science fanatics. The “hockey team” and “the Hansen’s” bear full moral culpability for these violent imbeciles and their fantasies to “save the world” from “big oil”, as they all fly back from Rio (Ipanema) and drive home in their VW microbuses, to live the good life provided by fossil fuels in modern society.

I happen to be fluent in (good) French.

A retirement home, “une asile pour vieillards” is incorrect on more than one count. First, it’s “un”, because in French, “asile” (refuge, sanctuary) is of male gender while “une” is feminine. Yep, things have genders in French.

Then, “maison de retraite” (retirement home) is the actual terminology that should have been used as “asile” today solely describes mental institutions “asile de fous”, refuge for mad.

The paragraph “je serais ravis” is blatantly incorrect. The verb “etre” should be “serai” in first person simple future tense. The use of conditional tense “serais” is not correct as the sentence does not contain a related condition. Furthermore “ravis” is the plural of “ravi” ou “ravie”, meaning delighted in male and respectively female form.

A “n” misses in “to cv” which should read “toN cv” (your resumé).

The overall grammar is very stock, some inversions in the verbiage indicate that the author is probably a young person from the multi-cultural suburbs where French language is a lost art or an impersonator trained to purposely write in bad French.

I hope Marc Morano can catch this person. His two “Climate Hustle” films are very useful to get the right message across to the general public. It’s not about climate change, or real science, but about the possible loss of our basic freedoms. I’ve even made subtitles for both films in English and German for both films and posted them as .srt files (text files only) at https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/? They can be integrated into the videos easily to allow more “penetration” of the message in Europe. I truly wish, this site could be hosted in French and German but of course this will remain “wishful thinking…”
By the way, the files for “Planet of the Humans” and “Climate Warning (Alberta)” are also available in both languages.

As far as I can tell from the article, nothing came from the Prof’s account. It seems like someone just used his email address on a contact form, and for comments on a web site, such as this comment I’m leaving now.

In other words. No “hacker” need be involved, just someone who knows his email address, which is probably public.
