Just last month, I received an email from a concerned member of the public who had yet another scheme for pumping cold benthic water to the surface to weaken hurricanes. I pointed out the problem with the scale needed but he just kept persisting that he could scale up. He seems to think that Uncle Sam just gives us a big bucket of money to carry out any weather modification studies we want. I eventually told him to contact Bill Gates and I haven’t heard from him since.

Unintended consequence: if you interrupt the hurricane you interrupt its work at removing heat from the hot ocean surace to space and thereby cause warming. You mix the warm water into the cooler subsurface water and retain the heat. We have had a pandemic of stupidity for about 5 decades. Geoengineering the planet is a symptom of this cerebral numbness.

Yes, like so many of the misguided ideas of environmentalists, it’s a recipe for disaster. Their obsession over global warming as our greatest threat is dubious if not laughable, for the IPCC predicts the worst feature of warming will be only a very gradual rise in ocean levels over the next century. Faster plant growth is a far more significant feature of rising CO2 levels than warming, and they never mention this because it is mostly a good thing.

However, one negative feature of faster plant growth is a rise in the number and severity of wildfires due to excessive fuel buildup and overly restrictive regulations on attempts to manage this risk. If better forest management and fire prevention aren’t actively promoted, smoke levels may rise to a level that results in atmospheric cooling and could even result in the far greater threat of a new ice age.

The sun dimming thing is one of the dumbest green plans ever.

A study in 2018 of the impact of volcanic eruptions on crop yields showed injecting aerosols into the upper atmosphere reduces plant growth. Turns out plants need sunlight.

Loydo, you actually think that “most modelling is probably pretty accurate”? You clearly have no understanding of computer modelling. I have been writing computer models for almost 50 years and I am very aware of their limitations. If even one of the assumptions used in a model is incorrect, the output from the model is worthless. This is especially true in climate modelling where there is an enormous range of modelled outcomes.

The model can be easily verified. Grow the same plant in multiple different shades of light. Check model against results. Repeat with different plants.

Actually, it is absolutely essential to keep the ‘global warming’ narrative alive.

If the climate, on its own, suddenly quits warming, or actually starts cooling, then they can claim the sun dimming was successful, and saved the world etc.

1) Am in absolute agreement with Zoe.
Bill Gates was in the vanguard of sexually dysfunctional young males – boys who lacked self-confidence, any sense-of-humour and were generally shy and awkward in the presence of women.
So they turned to computers.
We can think of a few more now can’t we, esp those who set up the (haha) Social Media.
Pretty well = the definition of ‘Geek’

2) Anyone who has read my ravings on the subject of ‘dirt’ (NO, nothing to do with #1 above), I will say “Yes Mr Gates, bring it on” ##

Why:
Maybe, just maybe and not at all for the first time, Climate Science has got it all completely back-ass-wards.

You (may) know what I call volcanoes = “Fountains of Ambrosia” for plants.
Thus, maybe Pinataubo cooled the planet.
Inside Modern Science it certainly would because Everybody Expected It To
Via the clever sounding and misunderstood ‘aerosols’
Big hand for Lame Handstand for that bit of junk, along with the Truly Epic misunderstanding of Green House Gas

Maybe Mount Potato (how do you spell that Mr Gore?) fed the plants.
Maybe Mt. Potato lowered temps by raising the Earth’s albedo via the extra greenery it created.
Greenery having a typical albedo of 0.4 compared to 0.15 for dry dirt and 0.1 for wet dirt.

Maybe that’s why gardeners around the world recognise the value of ‘Rock Dust’
Why farmers recognise that sulphur is equally as important a fertiliser as nitrogen, phosphorus and potash
Why Scandinavian foresters were ‘disappointed’ when UK coal-burning power stations started scrubbing their flues – forest productivity dropped 20%
A lot of water soluble nitrogen floated over the Noth Sea too.

So yes, pump sulphur into the sky. It can only fall back down to earth and when it does, almost every plant down there is just waiting, begging and pleading for it.
They will reward you by becoming big, green, verdant and lush.
And have more protein inside them
Maybe also they are just gagging for all the dust, ash and smoke as well. Stuff we call ‘pollution’ – in the truly insane way we now refer to CO2 as pollution.

Complete madness has broken out.

(##) maybe there’s more to being A Contrarian than ‘just saying so’

Hi Peta,
For some years I did practical trials, factorial designs to measure the effects of various nutrients on plant growth. Sulphur was one of the key foods. Yet, in all this discussion about what falls from the atmosphere onto the plant kingdom, I can recall very little work. To me, it is one of the central easpects of plant nutrition, but I cannot learn much from recent work because it is either rare or hard to find, compared with other related topics like what CO2 can do.

This condition is now identified as “high-function Autism” due to the condition falling on the spectrum of fMRI studies. Persons so affected tend to be innovative thinkers because their brain patterns are not traditionally constrained. According to your “dirt” theory, you would expect a dramatic greening of the earth soon after the ash from a huge volcanic eruption has settled across the planet Hasn’t been a big effect. In fact, there’s often a (temporary) reduction in crop yields from reduced sunlight and temperatures after the largest ash particles have settled but before the smallest particles have cleared. Your “dirt” theory doesn’t seem to hold up.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, is the old saying, and is appropriate here.

The Earth’s atmosphere ain’t broke, Bill Gates. There is no need to fix it.

Before messing with the Earth’s sunlight, you should first establish that Human-caused Climate Change is real. This has never been done, so you are operating on a *huge* assumption, which appears to be easily disproven if all the evidence for the benign nature of CO2 is considered.

In other words: You are going off half-cocked, Bill. You are operating solely on assumptions and assertions from others. This is not a reason to block out the Sun.

The other nations of the world, or at least a lot of them, would not be willing to allow North Korea to experiment with the Earth like that, and I would submit, that they would go to war to stop such an endeavor.

I think Bill Gates will have more trouble than he anticipates if he continues to try to manipulate sunlight.

I hear the Chicoms are planning some large experiments in the Earth’s atmosphere to try to increase rainfall. Going to a real war over the Earth’s climate and human stupidty associated with it, might become more realistic in the future.

We need a giant shiny-on-one-side venetian blind that automatically reflects more sunlight as the surface warms. Changing the Planet’s Albedo from .30 to .31 will cool by 1.6 C…..

Oops we already have that, called CLOUDS controlled by the vapor pressure of water at the ocean surface as that surface warms….problem solved.

Well, I’m all for it as long as it does not make our northern latitudes colder or reduce the power coming to our solar panels.

Salute!

Best, by far, argument to question zillions of satellites that attempt to control solar insolation.

At least two or three SF novels last ten years have used the concept of controlling mother nature and then things go wrong. Some hot, some cold, some stormy.

So they dim the light from the sun and a bunch of “unanticipated effects” end up killing a lot of people (likely a cold event). Then they get sued into oblivion. (Except of course it will be our government that implemented the idea and they claim its “just weather”)

The Mannians will quickly see this as unacceptable- it might fix AGW without re-distributing income. Mr. Gates doesn’t understand “the science”; the solution to AGW must include stopping people from doing what they want to do, especially stopping anything prosperous and beneficial to humans. We can’t save the planet without breaking a few eggs, you know. So greens will oppose Gates on this.
Gates may be able to convince them that blocking the sun will indeed increase human misery, and compromise- only disperse the sun-blocker at night. A wildly expensive ineffectual program, that’s the American way!

The Gates Plan: The rest of us starve in the cold and the dark.

Note to Bill- why not just throw a 10km wide asteroid at a sulfur-rich limestone deposit (Chicxulub, perhaps?)

Bad idea. Sunlight is needed to grow plants, even if it was practical to reduce sunlight. Present maps/diagrams like this one showing global solar heating are meaningless because they do not show ocean heating and land heating separately. Oceans are about 3/4 of the earth’s surface, and human water pollution dramatically affects the temperature of the upper ocean layer. Human water pollution is off the charts and the effects are obvious along all coasts and particularly asian river: The oceans viewed from space show large algae blooms almost everywhere near human population or some industries. Algae blooms are caused by polluted water. Clean water reflects most sunlight but algae evolved to absorb sunlight. Ocean dead zones are similar: The darker water absorbs more sunlight than clean water. Oceans are 75% of the planet surface and direct solar heating is the biggest effect on ocean temperature. The modern world uses the oceans as a convenient toilet. Now even the Ganges has dead zones. These dead zones are caused by water pollution, not CO2.

Ocean surface temperature rise is just one symptom of water pollution. Human water pollution consists of: human biological waste, farm waste, phosphates, nitrates, plastics, garbage, toxic industrial wastes from chemicals to oil, carcinogens, not nice, etc. This water pollution is what causes ocean oxygen depletion, dead zones, acidification, algae blooms, and artificial rising ocean temperature. More efficient treatment of sewage and agricultural runoff is needed even if the population is greatly reduced. Plus conscientious economic ways of handling industrial waste. Perhaps the worst untreatable stuff could go to some badlands if it doesn’t hurt the water table. Using the oceans generally as a toilet is the problem. Cheap, efficient waste disposal and water treatment are desirable.

All geoengineering experiments should first be done in a separate sandbox to isolate the effects of ‘unintended consequences’. Mars awaits.

Should put off some of this foolishness for a couple centuries at least. By then a large enough holodeck could just run simulations. The proponents could watch from inside, with the emergency exit lights turned off.

Happy New Year.

Part of me thinks this is a stunt by Gates designed to show the world he really believes in global warming and therefore, a carbon tax is needed (where the bulk of the funds flowing into government coffers via carbon taxes would come from the middle class, thereby getting the rich off the hook to be taxed at a higher rate).

I notice “cloud seeding” in the diagram.

Quote:

As in the case of all scientific research, the several groups and individuals who are working in this field have criticized one another’s experiments and interpretations. This normal scientific interchange has been unduly accentuated by the glare of publicity which has caused some of those concerned to be more dogmatic than is justifiable in view of the present incomplete information.

In the view of the public the meteorological world has been divided into believers and nonbelievers. This is an unfortunate and ridiculous concept. The fact is simply that the information at hand is not sufficient to permit an unequivocal conclusion regarding the possibilities of the artificial control of precipitation.

End Quote.

“An Appraisal of Cloud Seeding as a Means of Increasing Precipitation”. Henry G. Houghton, Head of the Department of Meteorology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From “The Smithsonian Report For 1951”, reprinted in “Smithsonian Treasury of 20th-Century Science”, 1966.

So, what’s changed in 70 years?

Dimming the sun will reduce the radiation that humans need to create vitamin D which is vital for an effective immune system. Without the sun being “dimmed” those living in the northern hemisphere are largely Vitamin D deficient which in turn means poor immune systems. Dim the sun and millions of people will have to take supplements every day – check to see if greedy Gates is cunningly busy in the area of making vitamin pills.

However, I thought that the UN convention on biodiversity had a long-standing (non-binding) moratorium on geo-engineering – specifically with regard to climate. This was primarily used to attack the ocean fertilisation experiments which, in fact, appear to have only produced benefits to the marine ecology. Ocean fertilisation is only tenuously described as geo-engineering as some of the increased biological activity was expected to seqester some carbon componds on the sea floor. It would be just as credible to label agriculture as geo-engineering. As for re-forestation, well that is clearly geo-engineering with the aim of affecting bio-deversity! Whereas the Gates plan is geo-engineering for its own sake.

The indisputable LAW of photosynthesis:
Sun +H20 +CO2 +Minerals = Sugars(food) + O2

When you add more CO2 on the left side of the equation, there is an irrefutable proportional increase on the right side of production of good things for life. We are not even close to maxing out on those benefits.
When you subtract/take away some Sun on the left side of the equation, you also have a loss of production of good things for life on the right side in many situations.

Every animal on this planet eats plants or something that ate plants. CO2 is the building block of life. Sunshine provides all the energy for life on this planet.

Isnt it it ironic that people that are supposedly going to save the greening planet and life on it, have strategies that involve taking away from a couple of items that life cherishes most.
The optimal level of CO2 for most life on this planet is around 900 parts per million…….more than double the current level.

Life wants MUCH more CO2. The booming biosphere and massively greening planet is life screaming this out loud and clear.
Instead of getting this message and making decisions based on observations, biology, agronomy, zoology, honest climate science/meteorology, we instead have decided to use computer simulations of a potential future atmosphere based on a speculative theory that has flawed mathematical equations which double the amount of CO2 sensitively compared to the amount that has now been accuratelymeasured.
But they can’t adjust those busted models and use better equations to improve their skill because then there would be no crisis.

There must be a climate crisis to justify the Climate Accord, The Green New Deal, carbon taxes, scientific and related project funding, and similar purely political endeavors.

The truth, that we are in the early stages of the current climate optimum, similar to the 4 previous climate optimums the past 10,000 years would obliterate the entire justification for using CO2 to redistribute global wealth via the climate accord as well as achieving sustainable development by crushing, the over consuming, robust economies that are fueled by cheap, reliable and efficient fossil fuels.

The scary, worst case but very unlikely model projection outcomes are needed to justify schemes like this by Bill Gates. This is not authentic science. Climate science was hijacked over 30 years ago for the political causes.

99%+ of people don’t understand climate and can’t use personal expertise to see thru the scientific constant snake oil bombarding them from the information gate keepers.

Our youngest generation has heard nothing but climate crisis/emergency and CO2 is pollution for 30 years.
.The science was settled a long time ago. Debate over. The truth has been censored.
