The New WUWT Theme

Here’s a thread for everyone to list all their complaints, and even the occasional compliment on the operation and appearance of the new theme.

We’ve seen comments coming in through through emails and the contact us forms, but here is a centralized repository for comment.

UPDATE – From Anthony

I have already done the following items to improve the look:

  1. Darkened the text in posts and comments from the original look to improve contrast
  2. Enabled our new commenting system that allows you to rate comments and to edit them after the fact (see the gear icon)
  3. Put back the blogroll
  4. Misc other small tweaks.

Note that I’ll look at every comment, but I have no patience for people that are running an ancient browser (like Internet Explorer 8) or and old version of Firefox….or some weird Linux/Centos/Chromium variant that isn’t compliant – we can’t help you there. Likewise, if you are still running on Windows XP, and complaining about load times, broken things etc. – please don’t.

Now is a good time for everybody to upgrade their systems to be in the present rather than the past.

I welcome comments on real issues, and ideas for improvement. With every change, there are some who don’t like change simply because of change. I can’t help you there, as we are moving forward to be more effective in what will become a very ugly climate fight this year.

Thanks and kind regards,

Anthony Watts

The new theme looks OK to me, but I must adjust the text size up a couple of ticks in my browser. (I do that with many websites.) I like the ability to edit my posted comments to correct for typos, etc.

Is there a way to use html tags? I like to embed links in sentences but, as far as I can tell, the only to embed a link displays the whole url rather than something like ‘wuwt’ so I’m stuck with …

  1. the new theme is fine, I like it.
  2. the blockquote isn’t optimal, there, the old one was much better.
  3. The color of the commentors name isn’t the best.
  4. The way to post links need for most of us some explanations
  5. The toolbox with editing tags is fine to have it.

Will be good to know, how long the time is for editing a comment

The color of the commentor’s name isn’t the best.

Perhaps the commenter’s name could be a bit darker or maybe bold or a text size bigger.?

Love the fact that we can give thumbs up and down to posts. We WUWT followers in the UK are just grateful for its existence, for all the work done by Anthony, Charles, Eric and the team, and for all the informed discussion from the many contributors. The next four years will be tough – WUWT that is a much-needed balancing scientific forum. Keep going everyone 👍🏻!

I’ve noticed images, like your graph, in comments in this new format begore but they were to small to read.
Just now and it enlarged!
I tried the “back arrow” on my browser and it took me back to the WUWT home page.

TIP: I tried it again looking for something I missed and noticed the small circle with and X init in the lower right corner of the image.
Clicked on the X and it brought me back to where I was in the thread.

Suggestion: Perhaps a tab on the title bar next to “TEST” with instructions/examples of what each of the new comment icon does? Along the lines of “Ric Werme’s guide to WUWT”?
Or replace Ric’s examples under “TEST” for the old with examples for the new? (Might want to rename “TEST” to something like “TEST WITH DEMOS”.

I would consider a paid subscription if it got rid of the ads, or even just the obnoxious ones like the huge popup at bottom-center. (And those “recommended” clickbait junk links.)

Second choice would be to go back to the old user experience, which wasn’t broken.

Being able to up/downvote and edit comments are improvements.

Anthony’s WUWT is “monetized.” As evidenced by all the ads that appear around the edges of the blog posts. Anthony gets a monthly revenue stream for this blog because of the ads. If he violates Terms of Service or if the Climate Libtards demand his host-service black-list him, then he’ll get “de-monetized.” I strongly support Anthony getting “monetized” for this open forum he has created (with the help of lots of others like CtM, Willis, EricW, and his moderator team, plus Guest posters) to express climate (and now Covid) opinions and expose the climate scam to a wide international viewership.

The Ads are probably provided by Google with not a lot of choice. I am totally sick of seeing the ones about an enlarged prostate as I no longer have one. They are actually not very clever because I have never clicked on one and the tinnitus is the other stupid one as having got hearing aids it is no longer a problem for me as it used to drive me crazy. Like a bunch of cicadas in your ears.
I must admit that ads like you see at the bottom of a page really annoys me when it covers content.
The only ads I click on are Greenpeace ones hoping that it costs them every time.:))

I love the darkened text. The modern look is for text so feint to be near illegible. Any graphic designer who didn’t follow the current fashion would be considered hopelessly out of date, my dear.
But, but, but… please also darken the text in the comments section like this:

Overall I like the new look and only have one comment. I’m missing the ability to scroll through and see which articles I’ve clicked on and which ones I haven’t. For me the title went from black to grey if I had clicked on it. Just due to a busy schedule I’m often days behind on my reading and marked articles make it much easier to figure out where I left off.

In conjunction with that, on the bottom is a list of what you’ve missed but for me it shows the latest posted articles whether I’ve read them or not.

The banner with the “About”, “Climate Fail Files” is always on the screen. It should just stay at the top of the page. I’d rather not lose that 1/2 inch of real estate. When combined with the add that’s always on the bottom of the screen, there’s not a lot of room left for the article or posts.

Worse, neither is calculated in when doing a page up or page down Every time I page up or down, I then have to use the arrow key key 4 or 5 times to get the text I want to read out from under the banner or the ad.

I don’t seem to have the same problem as you do with page up/page down, though.

BTW, you can get rid of the ad at the bottom, There is a little X tool way over on the right of the screen. Sometimes this tool goes underneath the up-arrow (“go to top”) tool in the lower right, and sometimes it takes a few tries, but you can get rid of it.

For all the people complaining about ads, three things:

Thing1: uBlock Origin or similar takes seconds to install and kills the vast majority dead. That said;

Thing2: WUWT earns revenue from ads. So they become part of the funding to keep WUWT going.

Thing3: I like the ads. Keeps me informed as to what the people collecting information on me and selling it think I’m interested in. Sometimes I google oddball sh*t just to see how long it takes before I see ads for it.

I agree the ads are necessary along with your reasoning consider this, I am not a scientist some articles are complex and I can get easily lost, how many people would pay for a subscription to something they find difficult to understand. Wuwt needs more and more readers in the hope that more people will leave the dark side and see the agw scam for what it is. The warmists have all the media, TV press facetube etc to them almost the whole world is a stage from which to shout their message, they’ve even enlisted children. Compared to that we are barely whispering. I fear charging people to hear the truth will just make the mountain we have to climb even taller. Just a thought.

December 27, 2020 3:56 pm

The last month or so of the previous WP theme was a pain as it functioned correctly for several minutes using the Safari, Chrome or Firefox browser on my Mac (OS10.11.6) but then “disappeared” everything when scrolling up or down, with a spinning orb before the desired portion of the page did or often didn’t render.

This problem didn’t exist during my previous decade of visiting WUWT almost every day. WUWT tweaked a few things and although the site was fine in Chrome and Firefox in the final weeks of the previous theme, the problem remained for the Mac’s native Safari browser.

The new theme works perfectly in all browsers on my Mac and I’m tapping this out in Safari.

I’m suspicious that the updating ads at the top of WUWT pages have disappeared and so too have the technical problems. There’s now a string of ads on the right side of WUWT pages, but they’re static instead of streaming what was probably corrupt code for certain browsers, at least on the Mac.

Hopefully they’re bringing in some revenue and you stick with them because the ads constantly updated by an external server (probably Google) create headaches for some readers.

I note I’ve currently got this page open in Safari and Chrome, with Safari having no pop-up ad at the bottom of the page but Chrome having the pop-up. However, it’s a static ad and isn’t affecting how Chrome consistently renders all of the page.

Hey, I just got an email telling me my comment was approved. That’s new and kinda cool. But do I need it? No. Refreshing to see if a comment has been approved plus load all the new comments is pretty simple, in fact it is one mouse click. OK, a click and maybe some scrolling.

I’m OK with it if the majority of people prefer it, but I just delete it out of hand anyway and just consider it additional clutter in my inbox. Unless there is a setting or that?

Is there an upper limit as to how much text can be posted inside one comment? For example, an upper limit in terms of bytes or number of text characters including spaces?

The reason for asking this question is that I’m not in a position to submit a formal WUWT article. It would be much too dangerous to my career. And so I sometimes write article-length comments in order to cover a topic in the detail I think is necessary.

What I usually do is write these long comments in a notepad text file for the first draft and then copy the text into the comment box when I’m done.

The editing feature has made it much simpler to write these article length comments because any typos and formatting mistakes can be quickly corrected.

Only flaw I see is hitting the spacebar to scroll up the main page; it moves up by the full window height, but should do so only by the height excluding the header. The lines in the posted material are too long to be viewed on an iPad. I need to magnify the letters to be able to read them, and then I can only see part of each line. Therefore, I can only read the text by constantly refocusing the view. The old format was better in this regard.

it should be possible to choose font size like in Kindle, where the lines then automatically are made shorter to fit the page.

It would be nice if we could choose a “theme color” like can be done with Office but that may not be an option available with the new format.
If it is, maybe down the road it will be incorporated. I doubt many of us realize the work that went into and continues to go into making the switch. Priorities.

There is a lot of ‘white space’ between comments which leads to a lot of scrolling on mobile. Perhaps this could be improved to be a little more compact.

The color of the commenters name makes it a little hard to notice.

I think the ‘red theme’ is too aggressive and carries too much baggage from various places. Strongly recommend trying a different color theme that has a little more of neutral feeling to it.

I prefer Serif fonts for reading anything that is fairly long in length. Having spent 20 years the printing industry I saw quite a few different fonts, Serif ones seem easier on my eyes. So the new Sans Serif font on WUWT wears on me and I lose interest. They are fine for emails and memos but for reading articles and stories give me Serifs.

Indeed serif fonts require less brain power. Copywriters know this. Courier is one of the best. Science is your friend when you want to communicate effectively. If it’s a war Anthony, get the right ammo.

I was a bit dismayed, at first, to see yet another favorite website update itself. But after using it for a while now, don’t see any problems.

Use Ubuntu Linux, i7 with 16GB RAM on a fanless mini PC and a 32 inch curved HD monitor. Everything looks good.

December 27, 2020 7:14 pm

The news crawl at the top of the page is a bit cheap looking. I thought dynamic stuff like that was discouraged by the best website designers. For me, it distracts from the static reading. But I DO like everything else, even though I’m not spending as much time here now.

I would like some way to tell which posts are new in a comment thread when I revisit the thread. Previously, WUWT software would highlight the new posts in a different color, which made it easy to scroll down through the comments to find new ones.

The scrolling healines bar at the top of the main page is distracting. But I solve that by scrolling it out of sight. 🙂

I like the new look. I think the bookmark section needs some maintenance. There are four categories:
1. Dead links – pages no longer exist – World Climate Report.
2 .Incorrect links – links were correct but haven’t been updated – UAH AMSU Daily Temps
3. Historical links – pages that are correct but are no longer being updated – EcoTretas (some are very old, but still contain useful information)
4. Correct/updated links.

The scrolling graphic bar does make me dizzy though… If your going to have something like that make it shaped like a planet and have the text wrap around it… heh.

Can you make ALL the text on a white background black? In this box when typing a message, the text is a very light HARD TO SEE grey. The dates and In “Category” under the three Related links are also hard to see light grey. Just LOOK at a WUWT page and anywhere you see text on white and the text ain’t black (or some other easy to see color), make it black.

Low contrast text is a scourge upon the WWW and should be eliminated.

I love your site Anthony! I would like to see a new tab/sub-tab; call it what you will, but keep a running list of the most ridiculus climate studies, things like Climate Change Will Lead to Increased Prostitution. You could name it something like Shameless. I have noted that you have a Goreathon subpage.

except for Mosh’s drive-bys, his longer, more explained posts are usually very much worth considering and heeding. Same with Nick S. When they take the time to respond with reasoned critiques and explanations, it helps everyone (well, most everyone) not get too full of themselves.

The majority of people here are singing from the same hymn sheet and it is good to read other considered points of view. If you believe someone like Nick is a ‘clown’ then you should be easily able to defeat him in debate. Nick is unfailingly polite and writes at great length.

When Mosh provides one of his reasoned responses he is also very much worth listening to. His drive by style he has developed over the last few years is irritating though

One of the things that has made WUWT what it is is that all views are welcome as long as they abide by the site’s policies. (The site’s policies can be found under “ABOUT” in the title bar.)
“You have to agree with me!” is NOT one of the site’s policies.

Regarding the new format: I hit “reply” to tonyb then realized my comment should be a reply to Independent_George.

I like it now I have adjusted but occasionally I am unsure if when I give a high rating if I am doing the right thing as I am not sure which side I am supporting.
I just figure sometimes that the person bringing it to our attention deserves it.
I like being able to upvote posts again as sometimes that saves a post myself.

I generally like the new look:

Likes:

  1. Red up arrow on bottom right to get to the top of article…very useful
  2. Easier and quicker to comment

Dislikes:

  1. Scrolling news at top
  2. Difficulty in copying posted graphics as .jpg files
  3. Pop up ad at bottom centre of page…a nuisance (especially as it covers my much loved red up arrow at bottom right!) but a very small price to pay for Anthony getting some payment for all his hard work over the years.
  4. No little solar image with sunspots on right…that was a useful feature and will be now that solar minimum has passed.

Greetings to you, Pamela:

With all due respect to you and yours, and any others here who use the browser I think you are using, I would suggest that perhaps you should consider migrating away from that browser.

Since I found out about it, I’ve stuck with Firefox (my old favorite, Netscape, was absorbed by someone, not sure who, but in it’s day, it was beyond reproach). I read your comment, as well as comments by others, and have no knowledge of ‘ads covering up content’, as you say. My screen on my computer is completely free of any extraneous ads or other cover-ups.

And, YES! I click on those ‘right-side ads’ to send some revenue to Anthony. Some are quite funny (even if they use deception to get you to click on it, i.e., the ‘topic’ of the presentation is not what you see when you go to the “article”). I’ve tried reading those ‘click-baits’ with and without an AdBlock-type of software, and without an AdBlock, they are almost unreadable.

If I may, and again with all due respect, I would encourage everyone to stop using the “G-word” browser, and if you have it, dump YouTwitFace as fast as you can, and see about using a search engine such as DuckDuckGo, or anything besides “G-word” search engine. If there’s a person in this Universe with a small digital footprint, it just might be yours truly (and no, I don’t even have a cell phone, Praise the Lord, and I hope I leave this planet without having ever touched one … … … SmartPhones make people stupid; SmartPhones make stupid people).

And, just in case you’re wondering about the overly-long handle, I’ve done a lot of posting at Jo’s, and when the resident trolls sling invective at me, I generally adopt the terminology they use for my character. It’s reached the point where I may need to go back to the original invective applied to me by one Mr. Harry “TwinOtter”, whom I refer to as “Dr. DeHavilland”. After I adopted his moniker for me, I saw an historical documentary on “Vlad the Impaler”, and learned that this was a real person in the past, and likely the inspiration for ‘Dracula’.

Regards to you and yours, and a very Happy New Year to us all, but especially Anthony and the phenomenal team of mods,

Vlad

P.S. Tried posting my entire “handle”, and found out that it will only allow a few characters for the name — — Anthony!!!! This would be a “fix” I’d be in favor of!!! The entire handle (as of now) is “The HyperVentilating, Depraved, and MOST Deplorable (and still asleep) Vlad the Impaler”. Yes, I’m willing to go back to just ‘Vlad the Impaler’, but let us recall ‘Crispin in Waterloo (actually in Beijing … )’ and those sorts of handles … … …

That was my take; at first, I thought “Dr. DeHavilland” was just making things up, then I learned this was an historical figure. I think I earned the moniker as I usually ended up skewering his arguments (ya know, with things like, ‘science’, and ‘logic’, and a geological perspective that most are unaware of … … … ).

Best Regards to all,

Vlad

Since I’ve made comments here I’ve only two different “handles”.
I made my first comment back … 2012? … after I’d read it for awhile.
I have a Government job. Even back then, my job could have been at stake due to the “Green Goons”. When I realized I was going to be a (semi)-regular commenter, I changed my handle. (Well, aside the occasional typos, I’ve never changed it.) But I sent Anthony an email telling I was going to do it and why.
PS I’ve never changed my email.

But look at it from WUWT’s side.
There are … harassers … all the time. They switch handles, email addresses to get around the site’s policies to continue to disrupt WUWT.
At least keep the same email address so they can “match signatures”.

December 28, 2020 3:22 am

This site is a real education on so many subjects, much appreciated and much improved, especially comments. Things that I’m not keen on I’ll just avoid, like the rolling banner and the voting.

The “notification” feature seems to inform me of all new comments, even if I select replies to my comment only.

All the best for the coming year.

This is more of a suggestion on content, not so much the look of the website.

What turned me away from alarmism was seeing, and verifying, lists of failed climate predictions. Seeing dozens of doomsdays scenarios from prestigious scientists and organizations that failed made me question whether our current predictions are any better. I would absolutely love to be able to post links to my family/friends that contains the failed climate predictions, along with the verifiable evidence of their failure.

It was a surprise but overall I like the change. I especially like being able to subscribe to updates WITHOUT having to post something, that’s a big improvement IMO.

THANK YOU for making the text darker, too, that’s helped many of us, apparently.

I have two further suggestions for improvements:
1) Make the text in the input box darker, too (The one I’m using right now to type this – it’s pretty pale)
2) Can you include CONTEXT in the email updates? Especially with the new consolidated format – it’s difficult to understand a simple comment like “But that isn’t true” without knowing what it is responding to (made-up example but you get my meaning). The previous email updates included that context, and I found it VERY helpful for following the conversation.

All the upgrades cost money. Some are worth it. Some aren’t.
PS I had a game that ran on whatever Windows was before XP. Someone made an XP patch for the game. But it wouldn’t run on Windows 7. 8-(
But Windows 10 has a feature called “DirectPlay”. Windows 10’s default is to turn it off but you can turn it on.

  4. Misc; not obvious to me, yet.

I’ve never been an extrovert and I avoid the garish bright colors, religiously.
But, it is NOT my blog. Your Blog, your rules, your color choices!

I do wish you could fix the “Like” function for articles. I haven’t been able to “Like” an article since midsummer.
Last summer, I managed to fix the WUWT “Like” function on my computer by first logging into the desktop WordPress editor/viewer. That trick hasn’t worked since September.

  • I am using Chrome Version 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (64-bit) with privacy activated Duckduckgo enabled.
  • I tend to block popups.
  • My malware prevention software is automatically updated Norton Security that is up-to-date.
  • My computer is a current model HP with a I7 chipset.

Some sites list the people who voted if one hovers the cursor over the vote buttons. It does help me check if I am overreacting to someone’s sarcasm or parody comments that fail to identify their comments with /S or /P.

I take people at their word. Failure to identify statements as sarcasm or parody is commenter hubris as I am not psychic and rely on the words I see.

I was anticipating your ‘mandatory login’ arrangement. I just don’t have the time to waste on comment threads that have been bombed by known serial thread bombers.
No matter how much other commenters claim they like them. That doesn’t justify serial trollops wasting my time.

Consequently, I spend far less time in WUWT than before. Finding threads bombed by malicious trollops usually ends my reading that thread.

Let me rephrase that.
Less reading of threads means much less participation in discussions. Especially since they are not discussions as the trollops make the same repetitiously specious claims with pasted sophistry cut from some propaganda site.

I doubt that I am alone in that respect.

Use of registered MAC addresses may help prevent trollops using multiple aliases. Lord knows that every time I access Apple or iTunes or iCloud they send me an urgent alert that a new machine accessed my account.
Yes, I do wonder why they do not save machine addresses for very long.

Cheers! May you have a wonderful and Happy New Year!!
Without the GND, of course!

Borrowed from the right hand side – “…flashy (apparently widely distributed)”– Michael E. Mann

The old format was not “flashy” at all – I would use the words solid, staid, substantial, professional.

The new format? Lets just say I’m not only old but old-fashioned.

That said, the new format may attract a little more attention from the younger set, actually get them to read something. If that happens I won’t complain.

A long time ago, the links to Previous and Next articles were at the head of each post. That made it easy to fast forward past posts which were of less interest. A previous change of style (or host?) forced the Previous and Next links to appear between the current post and the Comments. Not a big deal unless the less interesting post was also very long. If the new style permits the Previous and Next links to be moved back to the head of the current post, that would be my late request to Santa.

Otherwise, WUWT is among my must reads every day. Thanks for a wonderful site.

Is it possible to have a ‘progress’ bar at the top to indicate how far along in the article you are? I find this really helpful to know how long an article is and discern how much more reading will be needed to finish the article. Not having this means I have to scroll up and down a bunch of times to see how long an article is or how close I am to the end of it. There are some popular sites that use such a progress bar and I my impatience is always assuaged by seeing my progress. It helps me to actually commit to reading the entire article if I know what’s needed to finish it.

Thanks for all you work Anthony, this site has changed my life. For the better. Let’s hope that 2021 contains some positive developments.

The iPad is ideal for reading, but I can hardly read the new font without magnifying the view to the extent that the lines no longer fit the page.
