The report, an annual compilation of peer-reviewed science (not Twitter or editorial opinions), is produced by over 120 scientists from 15 countries. Key highlights (or “lowlights”) included:
- The average annual land surface air temperature in the Arctic was the second-warmest since the beginning of the record-keeping era in began in 1900.
- 90% of the past 10 years had air temperatures at least 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit greater the 1981-2010 mean.
- Record low June snow extent across the Eurasian Arctic.
- The second-lowest Arctic minimum sea ice extent in the satellite era.
- Warnings about extreme wildfires in the Arctic.

An open letter is being drafted by scientists calling for an Arctic Ambassador with a climate background to be appointed to the Arctic Council. Dr. Twila Moon is a climate expert in the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado. In an email submitted to a listserve called Cryolist, she said, “We believe this will raise the profile of Arctic research within the global climate change conversation, and generally increase U.S. engagement on international Arctic climate issues.” According to Moon, the United States has not had senior level representation on the Council since Admiral Robert J. Papp departed at the end of Obama Administration at the end of the Obama Administration.

Moon also said, “Appointing an Arctic Ambassador to the Arctic Council will counter a dangerous narrative that the Arctic is merely a region of future battles over resources in a world that has lost the battle against runaway global warming.” While she acknowledged critics might be concerned about a political appointment that could lead to a bad apple or have challenges of maintaining longevity along with rank, she doesn’t think that it is a showstopper. She also believes the May 2021 Arctic Council Ministerial is an early opportunity for the U.S. to signal both a renewed climate commitment, and reengagement with Arctic partners. According to a Tweet by Moon, 193 U.S.-based scientists have already signed the letter.

There does not appear to be much genuine support for climate action on the Arctic Council. For example Russia’s President Vladimir Putin seems to think western fears of global warming are a joke, except maybe when it suits him to look like he cares. Many of Russia’s scientists think the world is not experiencing dangerous global warming. Having said that, Russia might vote to add a climate ambassador, for the entertainment value of watching climate woke members of the council squirm.

Russia does not want to revert back to communism but much of the rest of the industrial world is actively considering it. It is odd how many lawyers really think that they can rewrite the laws of physics and economics.

Maybe the Russian scientists has not yett forgotten the era of Stalinism: In this historical period the science was determined by politicians… And the Russian scientists know very well the outcome of this approach: Total bankruptcy of the politicized “science”.
So the average air temperature is up by 1.5ºF – my word, how ravaging is that. Ravage, ravage, ravage. The Arctic must be punch-drunk from all the ravaging going on there.
And now there are warnings of wildfires. Golly, that’s probably worse than, you know, actually HAVING wildfires. Goodness me, those poly bears up there are so ravaged that they have taken to increasing their numbers – obviously a natural defence mechanism against the constant ravaging that is going on.
What is required is for scientists to stop doing actual science and take up politicking. Who would have thought, eh? Scientists making political statements! Excuse me, I have to go and lie down – I’m feeling completely ravaged by these developments…

As we have seen recently (and for many years actually) there is a WHOLE HEAP OF ACTUAL EVIDENCE that the current temperature in the Arctic is FAR LOWER than for most of the last 10,000 years
The RECOVERY in sea ice extent from the extreme highs of the LIA and late 1970s has leveled off at a level that is FAR HIGHER than for most of the Holocene.
There is NOTHING UNTOWARD happening in the Arctic except perhaps that there is STILL SO MUCH SEA ICE. !!
Both the slight rise in temperature and the slight drop in sea ice extent have been a massive BONUS to all life in the Arctic
Not only is the land surface GREENING, but the seas are also springing BACK to life after being TOO COLD and frozen over for much of the last 500 or so years (coldest period of the Holocene)
The drop in sea ice slightly toward the pre-LIA levels has opened up the food supply for the nearly extinct Bowhead Whale, and they are returning to the waters around Svalbard.

So, let me see if I’ve got this right – for the last 70 years or so, the USA has had little interest in the arctic, having only a small territorial presence. Obama shoehorned his way in claiming ‘climate interests’ and Trump (possibly) offered to buy Greenland which would have increased the USA stake. Meanwhile China has tried (unsuccessfully so far) to claim it has an interest in the Arctic despite having no territorial interests anywhere near. Now these Sinophile activists want to shoehorn their way into Arctic interests claiming the USA and ‘science’ need a greater presence in the region. They don’t want to represent the USA or scientific interests do they, or am I just being too cynical? I would support this only if their candidate changed their name to ‘comrade Lysenko.

NOAA’s NSIDC needs to be relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska from Boulder Colorado. That would solve a lot of the political activism problems from cult pseudoscientists like Moon.
So with multiple authors on each paper that’s probably 25-30 papers. Obviously a cherry pick of all publications, tailored to fit the CAGW agenda.
So now they want the right to cherry-pick ONE suitably biased “scientist” with “climate experience” to tell everyone on the committee what “the science” is.
When there is already a broad review process done by IPCC, why would the Arctic Council want to have a CAGW embed to feed them fake, distorted science?
