My in San Jose called us several weeks ago to chat. During the conversation he let it drop that the power was out at their house. Only later did I figure out that it was a rolling black out caused by California’s power shortage.
Sounds like it is about the time that PGE did some blackouts when the winds and fire hazard was high.
California’s mess will take years to clean up even if they went at it full bore, which I highly doubt they will.

Yeah, that would be about right, speaks volume about how well they their power lines and forests are managed. California government officials are too busy virtue signaling to take care of minor details like that.

Why the upper CASE?
I’m tired of waiting for my posts to take an hour or more the show up here at WUWT. Am I partially banned i.e., tossed into moderation because of something I wrote God knows when? The Xxxxx XXXX format has always shown up on my autologin feature, so I thought I’d try it to see if shows up sooner. The jury is still out. It probably doesn’t matter.
Steve, please allow me to set your mind at ease. Here’s the real issue.
WUWT gets thousands and thousands of comments. Because of its worldwide readership, it goes on 24/7/365.
Of course, this torrent needs moderation, or it would quickly fall to the lowest level. At this volume, unmoderated sites simply don’t work. Fortunately, WUWT has moderaters around the globe. Which leads me to the key point.
All of the Moderators are unpaid and underappreciated volunteers, donating their spare time to help ride herd on the zoo.
So yes, some part of the time, the woman or man who is moderating in your time zone is going to be unavailable for some reason. And as a result, your posting may indeed be delayed. Should WUWT cut their pay?

WUWT’s moderators do a dang good job on a very hard task.
Solution: I no longer wait or even hang around. I have to much to do without waiting for a post to appear.
Some posts never appear… Well, they tend to only be my version of facts and opinions. Those posts were no great loss.
WUWT’s good commenters have usually covered my points several times already.
WUWT’s bad commenters have been totally unmoved by facts, logic, reality or common sense since 2008. What hasn’t moved them before is certainly not going to move them immediately.
And there are quite a few of these bad commenters who appear to have full time jobs trying to deflect WUWT threads.
Truthfully, those bad commenters have proven themselves incapable of rational thought or discussion. They’ve stewed in ignorance, illogic, delusions, fantasies and narcissism for so long that they are incapable of rational discussion.
They are definitively not worth worrying about.

Why don’t you get generators like the rest of the Third World?
Agreed. There are some very reasonable generators that one can purchase from Harbor Freight or from Northern Tool. We survived a two week power outage some years ago and used my old 8000W generator from ourracing team to supply power to the refrigerator, freezer, microwave, TV and blower on my wood-burning stove. The generator can run outside and the above mentioned equipment can be powered by heavy duty extension cords. Generators can run off of gasoline or you can purchase one that will operate off of propane.

Twenty years ago I purchased a used Propane Fired Generator since I needed to have temporary power for the current house I was building. It is an ONAN 208/3/60, 120/1/60, 100A 38KW powered by a 1953, 6 cylinder Ford Industrial Engine. Powers the whole house and the 3-phase powers my wood working shop in my heated pole barn. Bought it for $4500 in 1999. Just replaced the radiator and, fan belts, gas regulator for another $4K. One of the best investments I ever made as outages are frequent in farm country were I live because the Hill Williams love to wrap their vehicles around power poles at 3AM. When AOC becomes Energy Zhar I’ll needed it.
Onan is Cummings. We’ve got several 1.5 MW gensets at work with both Onan and Cummings labels on them. You can outfit that thing with dual-fuel and run propane or diesel. That’d make it better long-term. Run propane for short stints and quarterly testing, and diesel for longer outages.
Run propane with water mist injection into the intake header to clear carbon out of the cylinders. First time we did that with our Cummings units, we loaded them up and they belched black soot for nearly 5 minutes before the exhaust cleared up. If you can’t clean up the cylinders sufficiently with water mist injection, mix 50/50 water/acetone and try again. That’ll likely clean it right up.
I never really liked the Cummings units… they tend to leak oil, fuel, coolant. The floor under each one at work is stained with drips and splatters. We have to constantly go around and tighten fasteners on the coolant hoses and threaded connectors on the fuel lines, the vibrations tend to shake them loose.
The one Caterpillar 1.5 MW unit we’ve got, the floor looks just as clean as the day it was installed ~20 years ago, except at the coupling between engine and generator (we had a guy who overgreased it, put nearly a whole tube of grease into the coupling, and the grease flung out). That thing runs smooth, too. Even fully loaded on the load bank, it’s smoother than an unloaded Cummings.
Due to the Loonies in our area shutting down cheap clean burning coal fired plants or converting them to Natural gas I have installed a backup generator and switch system for my house. It is a 10000 watt unit that I converted to Tri- fuel to use gasoline, natural gas or propane. The total cost for the generator and conversion was $1,000 USD. I was able to source the generator from Lowes during a clearance sale where it was marked down 40%. The conversion kit was the same amount as the markdown.
The Generac switch system is in stock at Home Depot for $225 which gives you an emergency Buss and a transfer switch that cuts out your essential load from the grid supply to the generator. It is a manual switch that uses a push button but it can be upgraded to an automatic system with a kit from Generac.
So why the conversion kit to natural gas. The local area has four gas stations and during the last extended power outage none of these could sell gas. With natural gas I have a more reliable supply of fuel. I also have two 20 pound propane bottles as well.
So for basically $1500 in hardware I can protect my house from freezing up if the power is out for an extended period. During the last major ice storm event here some areas were without power service for two to three weeks before the power lines and broken power poles could be replaced. Even some of the main high tension towers collapsed which took over 8 months to replace and repair.
During some of the coldest days last winter the peak power demand was within a whisker of reaching the total output from the grid and there was some scrambling and shedding to prevent the grid from shutting down. If there is an upset it can take some time to recover from that so now I just switch over and not worry.

Power went out here on Whidbey Island yesterday, due to high winds.
I cranked up the 8KW generator and ran the cords to power the fridge and some lights. Then started a nice fire in the fireplace.
We used to have a 10KW whole-house generator, Generac. But it gave up the ghost a couple years ago. We bought the Champion 8kw as a stopgap until we replace the whole-house model with a 12 or 16kw.
