‘The Weaponization of Weather in the Phony Climate War’

Joe Bastardi, whom I consider a friend and a brilliant weather forecaster with a photographic-like memory for weather events through history, has written a book on the “climate war”, which is a rebuttal to Michael Mann’s use of the same phrase in his gloom and doom book.

The Washington Times had this to say about it:

In “The Weaponization of Weather,” Mr. Bastardi proffers one of the best challenges to the hysterical claims that humans are causing over-the-top climate change by demonstrating that “extreme weather” can be predicted based on its natural occurrence in history. Mr. Bastardi is a weather historian with an encyclopedic knowledge of past weather events. He is a long-time practitioner in the atmospheric science field with 45 years of experience. And, Mr. Bastardi is a frequent guest on the Sean Hannity Show, where he predicts and explains current extreme weather conditions such as imminent hurricanes and snowstorms.

In chapter after chapter, Mr. Bastardi shows how extreme weather and its consequent impacts on the environment is really just weather doing what weather does. As in his previous book, The Climate Chronicles: Inconvenient Revelations You Won’t Hear from Al Gore—And Others, Joe explains how understanding extreme weather events from the distant past (i.e., historic analogs) leads to accurate contemporary forecasts.

And, if such extreme events can be predicted from their previous occurrence, doesn’t that call into question the claim that these events are somehow unusual and now based on human activity? Link the understanding of past conditions with the cyclical nature of climate and you have the key ingredients for a reliable forecast.

Mr. Bastardi notes in the book:

“As someone who relies on the past to frame the future, no stretch of U.S. weather was as extreme as the 1930s to 1960s. Honestly, everything from hurricanes to droughts to extreme heat to extreme cold during that period make the past several decades seem rather boring. But you’d only be able to acknowledge this if you know your weather history. For some people to pretend as if today’s events are a sign that man is responsible for ‘weird’ weather certainly has me questioning their methods.”

Mr. Bastardi’s accessible, colloquial style—delivered with plenty of passion for atmospheric science and its proper understanding without the hype—makes The Weaponization of Weather a delight for readers to gain a greater appreciation for the complexity and majesty of the climate.

And that’s the truth, just look at this data on heatwaves in the 1930’s. Where’s the crisis today? There isn’t one.

Heatwave Index for the contiguous United States, 1895-2015 (no later data is available). The U.S. Annual Heat Wave Index tracks the occurrence of heat wave conditions across the United States. This index defines a heat wave as a period lasting at least four days with an average temperature that would only be expected to occur once every 10 years, based on the historical record. The index value for a given year depends on how often heat waves occur and how widespread they are. Source: Our World in Data, using data from NOAA.

Most anything I’ve ever seen produced by Joe Bastardi rings true, so I don’t hesitate to endorse it. -Anthony

Here is the Amazon description:

What if climate change is naturally occurring and cyclical? What if trillions of dollars will be spent to accomplish nothing? What if the real agenda is not about science, climate and weather, but simply uses this as a tool to disrupt and destroy the foundational concepts of one nation, under God, that have led to the greatest quality of life and liberty the world has ever known?

At 65, Joe Bastardi is one of the most experienced meteorologists in the world today. His knowledge of past major events puts into perspective the extreme weather events seen today, that are nothing new, and in fact, not as severe as before. In this book, Bastardi goes in-depth to document naturally occurring climate and weather events to question those whose agenda it is to weaponize each weather event for the pursuit of a political and social aim. Of course, the climate is changing, and with the many natural influencers constantly in play, it always will.

Thanks to an ever-fluctuating level of activity in the large natural drivers that have always controlled it, such as our Sun, the oceans, stochastic events and the very design of the system itself, climate change is natural. “A single attribution to man as the climate control knob in the face of this is questionable, if not a stretch. The reader should at least look at the ideas presented here,” said Bastardi. Joe understands the fear today, given what has been nothing short of public indoctrination.

His new book offers an environmentally friendly and inexpensive solution to alleviate those fears, that will not destroy the economic lifeline of this nation as the Green New Deal surely will. It begins with removing the fear that has been pushed to create what is becoming irrational panic, especially with our young. So, is this book important on multiple levels? You decide.

Will that cover picture help or hinder ?
Still, it is good that both the Washington Post and Amazon give it a favourable review.
Maybe they now see more money in the anti alarmist viewpoint?

Good ol’ Joe calls it what it is: W=E=A=T-H-E-R, and it’s something over which we have no control… just as we have ZERO control over what the planet decides to do over millenia-long periods of time. It’s going to be 80F today, and then drop to about 61F tomorrow. Aside from being autumn weather that’s too warm to start the Goose People heading to the Far South just yet, it’s just typical autumn weather and this brief warmup used to be called an Indian Summer, which was a brief period of warm weather after the first frost. We had the first frost last week. Now we’re having a NORMAL AUTUMN.

The picture is very harmful, along with the foreword by Hannity. It veritably shouts “right wingnut wacko reading material!”

Together this guarantees that only rabid Fox News Channel viewers will ever consider reading his book.

It would be far more helpful to try to sell the message to a broader audience.

The biggest problem for climate alarmism skepticism is that it is tied to extreme right wingnut ideology. Guaranteed to keep it a minority view point.

What is extreme right wingnut ideology? What extremes are you talking about, the desire to pay as few taxes as possible and be regulated as little as possible? These don’t seem to be extreme to me. Perhaps you are referring to something else.

How about some specifics? We want to be able to idenfify any right wingnut extremists.

Joe,
Having not read your book, I wonder if you have pointed out that it is the pressure systems that control our weather and the fronts they produce, but of course the pressure systems result from the sun’s influence and the earth’s rotation. Another point no one seems to make is that there is no such thing as average temperature any more than there is average cloud or rainfall or wind or anything else.
To compare temperature anywhere between different places that means anything, you would also have to take into account the pressure at each place, the wind speed and the altitude or elevation above sea level. This is obviously never done because again there is no such thing as average pressure. Another factor that would influence our weather is the moon. Depending on what the tides are doing they will affect ocean currents, especially around the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn where huge tides occur and all this shows that weather can never be the same or average.
A bit of weather trivia for you – the highest line of thunderstorms I ever encountered was 70,000′ high and that was in the early 1970’s – it was much warmer then.

Love thunderstorm stories. In the early ’70’s I went to Georgia on business several times. One time on the way home the weather was very iffy. However the pilot got clearance for takeoff. The first 20,000 feet involved a lot of turns, but the crew managed to stay in between clouds. It was very impressive looking out the window. Lightning everywhere, up, down, sideways. Immense towering storms all around.
They continued the ‘tween storms flying for at least an hour and a half heading back northwest to the Twin Cities(of Minneapolis riot fame now!). All that way the clouds had to be at least another 30,000 ft. high. Every direction looked like the Grand Canyon, but with lightning.

I didn’t get to meet the flight crew, but I would have sincerely congratulated them for an outstanding job. We probably shouldn’t have taken off. I think it was a lot more dangerous than I thought. But we made it and I was glad to be home after a week of messy work.

Looking forward to purchasing Joe’s book and other books featured here for winter reading, since it appears it is going to be a long, dark winter in more ways than thought. Hopefully the lights stay on and the book isn’t banned, although it will probably be banned from discussion on some social media.

There needs to be criminal investigations into dubious statements by nefarious climate scientists like the types of alarmism promoted by Michael Mann who has polarized and politicized this narrative so much as to undermine faith in basic science. This could be done under the Data Quality Act, where when a Pal Reviewed climate science paper is released stating that mankind is facing a climate emergency and then Michael Mann goes on on 60 minutes stating that 6-8 foot sea level increases is possible by 2100 or all wild fires and/or hurricanes now are due to man induced climate heating. This is the academic equivalent of shouting fire in the proverbial theatre. And then the media doesn’t even give any equal time to any other credible meteorologist or accredited ‘climate’ scientist to give any balance or perspective to this supposed impending climate disaster.

This is equivalent to COVID fascism that targets citizens from practising/attending their constitutional guaranteed religious right to practise their religion, and then not only allowing but promoting domestic terrorism with rioting, burning and looting. The hypocrisy is becoming criminal and just might push law abiding people over the edge in protecting their own Constitutional rights, using the Second Amendment if necessary. This is precisely the reason why the Founding Fathers of the Nation had the Second Amendment immediately following the First Amendment, and it is coming close to that in some jurisdictions. Let’s hope that sanity returns before things go off the rails. It doesn’t have to be this way.

The chapter on the way out evolved after a segment on tucker about trees And Michael schellenbergers book apocalypse never was huge. It’s interesting that thru the drag in publishing this came out after both dr manns and Michael schellenbergers book. Notice this NOT based on a NOAA press release or any NOAA spokesman or scientist. He’s making claims based on NOAA data. And his claims are that Pence was wrong about the long-term trend because this year is so active. The author knows nothing about averages or trends. And then he references damages from hurricanes in dollars. This is a dodge that ignores inflation and rising value of property and possessions. So his argument crumbles if you look at the NOAA data properly.

Griff, you will get a lot of different positions on a site like this, where Anthony allows a wide range of opinions (of which you are a good example). But I think that most of the commenters don’t have a problem with the idea that the world has been warming over the last 150 or so years, in the Arctic and otherwise. That means that recent temperatures are likely to be the higher now than any time in the last century or so. But tying that to greenhouse gases, or convincing people that the warming is catastrophic, is much harder to swallow, and isn’t something you’ve ever proved.

Reply to  griff

Yes Griff, there are plenty of those posts and comments about slightly unusual cold weather.

It’s not that different from when the mainstream media make a big splash about record high temperatures. Sometimes the media are so keen to get the bad news out, that they even announce record hot days in advance of the actual thermometer readings. And sometimes those actual thermometer readings don’t live up to their advance billing, but I don’t ever recall seeing a retraction. And sometimes those actual thermometer readings turn out to have been influenced by thermal contamination.

Predictions of “another ice age” (actually another glacial period in the current ice age) are quite valid, there being no reason to assume the ± 100,000 year cycle is no longer in effect. Whether it happens in the next century, or the next 1,000 years, or the next 10,000 years is unknown and probably unknowable, but it is coming. And it won’t be pretty.

Speaking of “mashed” records, I have a few yearly list of daily record highs and lows for my little spot on the globe.
Between 2007 and April of 2012 there were 74 changes made. (ie the year a record was set, the 2012 list record high was lower than the 2007 list, the new record lows are higher etc.)
53 record lows and 21 record highs were changed, not broken, changed. Just for my little spot on the globe.
(I have latter lists where more changes were made but haven’t done a day by day comparison of them.)
Does anybody really know what temp it was?

PS All the list came from NOAA.

griff, we are only just a small bump above the coldest period in 10,000 years.

Cooling would be disastrous for humanity….

A bit more warming would open up vast tracts of land that is currently too cold to do much with.

Warming would be a massive benefit for the planet, particularly in the Arctic regions that have been frozen over for way too long.

No warming in the Arctic except from the NON-CO@ El Nino event, gradually dissipating.

We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.” — Washington University biologist Barry Commoner

Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.” — New York Times editorial

No, they weren’t said yesterday, last week or even last year, they were in fact said on April 22, 1970 … the first ‘Earth Day‘ … 50 years ago!

I don’t know about you pair, but a boy can only cry wolf a certain amount of times before people start laughing at him and then ignoring him.

BTW, I was 8 when these ‘claims’ were made.

I have to guess Griff has never been in Russia?
I am regularly here, (and am now), and have been near 20 yrs on and off.
In Siberia it is known for 70C extremes from hot to cold. (-35 to +35).
In Ural it’s even more fun, often varying by +/-30C within hours!

Last night it was 12C all night, quite balmy for October, thurs they are predicting snow, which falls like clockwork in October on cue.

For goodness sakes Griff either take a break or begin to know WTF you are on about, or take a flight over our part of the world take a peek out of the window of your a/c and view non stop snow and ice for 7 months a year for the 4-6hrs flying time you will be over this vast country.

I know you have no intention ever of knowing anything remotely resembling the truth, but I invite you to pop over here during January and February in your little shorts and sandals and enjoy the delights of frostbite first hand….hopefully on the bit inside your pants…

Just started reading his book, and I am already impressed by it. He sounds like quite a guy. I can safely say that I am adding him to the list of people I admire the most in this world along with Anthony, David Middleton, Dr Patrick Moore, and others.

Joe says early on in the book that the CAGW narrative is just a smokescreen or pretext for politics and activism, and I could not agree more. It easily explains why skeptics come under such bitter attack by the alarmists when the skeptics question the alarmist narrative with sound scientific evidence. You don’t need to be a psychologist to understand what is going on when the attacks happen — the behavior of the alarmists tells us a lot. In my mind, the alarmists confuse arrogance and egotism for morality and righteousness. It is not so hard to do.

The sad part is that none of this is likely to end any time soon.

Understanding weather and using it to frighten people to rule over them and take their wealth is scam that is thousands upon thousands of years old. If you don’t sacrifice and obey the spring floods won’t come and you’ll starve or whate have you.

The “buy it here on Amazon” link isn’t showing. Suspect censorship from the Amazon site….

The link is on the left just under the picture of the book, or it is on my screen anyway.

On the cover:
While it may be off-putting to some, it’s surely no worse than Mann’s “Madhouse Effect” (Columbia Press, 2016).

As an environmental scientist, I despair the popular press’ single-minded validation of the claims climate change is solely due to man’s behavior (AGW), or that their ridiculous solutions could have anything other than political effect. While attending COP21 in Paris, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Bastardi and other “deniers”. They were hosting an “anti-climate change symposium” I attended … out of relief from the other offensive, hysterical main-event.

I was impressed by the knowledge and seriousness of the “deniers”, otherwise represented as nuts by the press and Mann himself. I look forward to reading this book and will disregard the cover.

A good response to the old (MSM TDS) “style over substance” illogical thinking propaganda.
