Simon Sharwood, APAC EditorChina has made treatment of its 5G vendors an issue of the same rank as its aspirations on issues like climate change and trade liberalisation.
The nation’s position emerged yesterday in a new Position Paper of the People’s Republic of China On the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations that spells out China’s 14-point vision for international trade and cooperation.
Among the points raised are observance of World Trade Organisation rules, following the World Health Organisation’s lead on COVID-19 management and fully implementing the Paris Agreement and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. China wants nuclear disarmament, gender equality, respect for intellectual property, settlement for refugees, more assistance to developing nations, ongoing action against combat terrorism and supports UN reform.

Reading the English version of the China’s position paper, technology trade issues such as President Trump’s Chinese 5G ban appear to get a bit more airtime than climate change.
I’m looking forward to next year’s Chinese position paper, to see whether climate change even makes the list.
Each and every one of those goals are no more than diplomatic Happy-Talk. Standard procedure for a UN position paper.

Trump should give a grant for getting 10G by Christmas and render 5G obsolete. I’m sure Huawei’s tech has built-in hacks and tech proprietary highjacking capability.
China is of course an admired “Climate Leader” for its Climate Action by the West’s Leftists. It’s not because of what the Chinese commies do on actual CO2 emissions action, which is actually nothing but rhetoric, but for their ability to impose the Communist state’s iron-fisted will on its people with ease. Climate Action for a Western Leftist is how well a country can impose authoritarian means on its People. It’s why the Leftists admire the Ardern government of NZ as being a climate leader. PM Ardern imposes lockdown with ease and seizes guns in NZ with ease. Leftists like that.
“Climate Leader” and “Climate Action” are thus synonymous terms and thus have become Liberal code-speak for being an effective authoritarian State.

Of course they do this by bulldozing and wiping out anyone who complains but I guess that is no big deal to a western progressive.

Yeppers. China cares about climate change. They have the largest emissions of CO2 and still increasing, all permitted by the Paris Accords. Not to mention that they are selling coal plants to third world countries.
They are selling such plants because the west refuses

Yes China has taken the climate change thing about as far as they can as a weapon against the west. They will start to pull they don’t interfere with China sovereignty now and they already moved to slice and dice the Paris agreement on human rights at the last COP.
Not many countries respect Red China anymore, after the last 6-8 months of the China Virus. Even the ones they have been bought off and bribed…they may be silent and cowered into silence, but that respect is lost. Perhaps Duterte in the Philippines might be an exception, as he has sold out his country to China and makes no apologies for it either.
Losing Face in China is a cardinal sin, and Chairman Xi has disappointed in spades. While his RPC countrymen and CPC party can’t say anything, it isn’t exactly a secret that there is discontent in China with his iron grip hold on the leadership for life. They have had an extremely bad year for their agriculture, losing maybe up to 50% of their agriculture production this year with all the floods, so will be interesting to see them come wanting to buy a lot of food this upcoming year. If they go hungry, with all those excess males that can’t find a wife because they aborted the baby girls, they may have a big problem internally.
To the best of my knowledge, President Trump is the only true global leader that has has the kahonas to actually confront China and hold them to account. In that regard, it is much, much more important that he he is reelected, not only to hold off the socialist/marxist forces trying to undermine the USA and the West, but to ensure that Red China doesn’t have their way with the world. It is indeed a thin thread holding things together for the moment.

Have not taken a stand yet. Not sure if I agree with Huawei but does limit competition and that is bad. Not sure if I agree with Trump on this as there are many implications lurking in the background but climate change is not one of them to be against. Seems like “buy American” instead of buy cheaper prevails which over the long run will not prevail.
I read thus blog and agree with most that is said but I find the anti Chinese rhetoric very sad. How many if you have been to China? Have spent frequent time there over a number of years? I bet none of you whiners have. I tell you one thing, the development of infrastructure and acceleration of electric vehicles certainly puts the UK to shame. Ditto rail infrastructure. Most people travel by carbon friendly high speed trains when travelling around the country, rather than using air travel. I have seen two parallel lines built between Beijing And Jinan (mother in law’s home) in less than 5 years, the first built in less than a year. In the UK, we have taken 10 years just talking about HS2; in the USA, I’m not even sure you know what high speed trains are! Take a look at the high speed network in China before you start to criticise. Look at the plank in your own eyes, not the splinter in China’s.
As the “Wuhan flu” strain the A was circulating in the USA way before strain B, its successor, popped up in China. Go figure.
Don’t forget that the Western world is constrained by property rights, environmental assessments and protracted judicial challenges. All of these must be accommodated or overcome before any significant infrastructure construction. China just does it.
Newt2u, I would say that what is plainly visible in China is dwarfed by the invisible issues. Sure, there may be the appearance and (for all practical purposes) practices of modern amenities. But what about China’s iron fist and death grip on its populace? Free speech does not exist. Freedom of association does not exist. Right to a fair trial does not exist.
The soviet union was notorious for building “modern” towns and populating it with young families to make it appear as though they are capable of prosperity and safety and health.
A polished turd is still turd, even if it glints likes silver in the sunlight.
As for why a high speed rail system does not exist in America– it’s quite simple. There are two primary reasons. One, individual wealth is so high in the US that people can individually afford their own mode of transportation, be that a vehicle (leased, owned, or rented) or an airplane or something else. Two, America invested considerable sums in a system that has far greater usage than a high speed rail system: the Interstate highway system. A high speed rail system goes to only certain major hubs or cities throughout a country or continent. The US Interstate system visits every major city in the US, and every major city splits out into state highway systems that connect to secondary cities and towns.
A high speed train is a convenient system for moving people from point to point but the US Interstate system is a vital organ to the entire US nation.
Another reason why rail works better in Europe is that Europe has more people in a smaller area.
A high speed rail system might be convenient for moving people from point A to point B, however airplanes are even more convenient for doing the same task.
Another point is that high speed trains can’t run on the same tracks as regular trains, for two reasons.
1) The regular tracks aren’t built for high speed. Both issues of stress on the tracks and bridges and the radius of turns.
2) Since regular trains are running on the regular tracks, a high speed train would have to slow down whenever it caught up with a regular train.
Hitler was real good at things too. He got the Autobahn going and the Peoples Wagon (Volkswagen) so your apology about China being able to build high speed trains has nothing to do with anything, other than I bet you would have supported Nazi Germany, because that is what you do when you support the dictator for life, Comrade Xi. Most of us here are critics of Red China and CPC, not because of the poor (mainly good) people of China that have to endure this curse but because of their Communistic/Fascist totalitarian regime that mistreats their own citizens and they way they treat other countries around the world. We are on a collision course with an authoritarian dictatorship (which you seem to support) and this won’t end well for Red China. I won’t go back to China until that regime is finished, hopefully soon.
I find it fascinating how so many progressives get offended whenever someone criticizes the government of China. It’s almost as if they don’t care how many people the leaders kill, so long as they verbally claim to support communism.
BTW, why do you assume that forcing electric cars on the populace is good for them?
The Chicoms and the other leeches at the UN would just love to get the United States back in the Paris Climate Agreement.
