ABC: Failure to Acknowledge the Climate Change Grief of Others Causes Serious Health Problems

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to the Australian ABC, people frequently fail to properly acknowledge or recognise “Climate Grief”, feelings of loss and despair some people experience over events which mostly have not happened yet. Supporters of the idea of climate grief claim the failure of members of the public to validate the climate grief of others leads to “major physical and mental health problems”.

Climate grief expected to be widespread soon but it’s still not openly acknowledged

ABC Health & Wellbeing /
By health reporter Paige Cockburn

Feeling miserable, anxious, helpless and just generally terrible because the world is becoming less habitable? You’re not alone.

The good news is there are strategies that may help you cope. The bad news is the pandemic we’re now facing may test your passion and enthusiasm for climate action.

For the past 18 months, Canadian scientist Kurtis Baute says he has been dealing with a lot of ‘climate grief’.

“Basically I can’t stop thinking about the fact that millions of people, real people, are dying or will die because of something that is completely unavoidable,” he recently announced on his YouTube channel.

“We can stop using fossil fuels but so far we’ve completely failed to do so…it feels completely out of control and it’s depressing.”

The danger of unvalidated grief

Climate grief is often categorised as a form of disenfranchised grief which means it isn’t always publicly or openly acknowledged.

“People may feel this isn’t something someone else can help with,” says Dr Snell.

This can then snowball into major physical and mental health problems.

The idea of victimhood seems a persistent theme of the climate fear narrative. High profile green campaigner Bill McKibben is almost open about his apparent need to feel like a victim.

The Wannabe Oppressed

By STANLEY KURTZ
October 16, 2013 8:00 AM

Today’s college students, climate change, and the cult of victimization

In a 1996 piece titled “Job and Matthew,” McKibben describes his arrival at college in 1978 as a liberal-leaning student with a suburban Protestant background. “My leftism grew more righteous in college,” he says, “but still there was something pro forma about it.” The problem? “Being white, male, straight, and of impeccably middle-class background, I could not realistically claim to be a victim of anything.”

At one point, in what he calls a “loony” attempt to claim the mantle of victimhood, McKibben nearly convinced himself that he was part Irish so he could don a black armband as Bobby Sands and fellow members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army died in a hunger strike. Yet even as he failed to persuade himself he was Irish, McKibben continued to enthusiastically support every leftist-approved victim group he could find. Nonetheless, something was missing. None of these causes seemed truly his own. When McKibben almost single-handedly turned global warming into a public issue in 1989, his problem was solved. Now everyone could be a victim

Global warming allows the upper-middle-class to join the proletariat, cloaking erstwhile oppressors in the mantle of righteous victimhood.

Read more: The Wannabe Oppressed

The demand for societal “acknowledgement” of something as ill defined as climate grief in my opinion verges on abusive.

If you accept someone is a genuine victim, the natural response is to try to help ease their pain. If this idea of climate victimhood sticks, it will be very difficult to refuse demands from climate victims to do whatever is necessary to alleviate their suffering.

I am not rejecting the idea that some climate worriers may suffer from serious psychiatric disorders, and I am certainly keen that people in pain receive the medical treatment they require, even if the source of their anguish is entirely imaginary. But I feel no compulsion to pretend their climate delusions have any objective validity.

Should also acknowledge the more intense form of climate grief and mental health problems in the community of climate scientists. WUWT readers should know that this grief is made much worse by widespread climate denial.

It is more likely that to “properly acknowledge ‘Climate Grief'” you are merely validating the “mental health problems” they already have. To grieve for something they haven’t lost is insane: why would you want to confirm their grief by pretending with them that it is real? That just makes you crazy too.
So-called Climate Deniers are just sane people who haven’t joined their mass delusion.

Lab science proves CO2 is a greenhouse gas and should affect our planet’s cooling process by an unknown amount. The potential range of the greenhouse effect based on that lab science is from small to harmless.

The good news benefit of greening the planet probably exceeds any problems from warming, if there are any problems. The greenhouse effect mainly affects higher latitudes, mainly during the coldest months of the year and mainly at night. Think of warmer winter nights in Alaska. That’s good news.

In addition, a lower temperature differential between the Arctic and the tropics should moderate weather in the Northern Hemisphere. That would be good news too.

In summary, there is a lot of good news from adding CO2 to the air and slightly warming our planet. That good news is ignored far too often. The only other *choice* would be global cooling, since our planet is always warming or cooling. I favor warming.

To me climate denial refers to anmoying, bellowing leftists denying me the opportunity to fully enjoy the current wonderful climate, which is the best climate since the little ice age.

The physics is not psuedo but is still in a learning curve . The models are near worthless computer games until the physics of climate change are known with much greater precision than today.

The probability that man made CO2 is the climate controller is really a false claim that 4.5 billion years of natural causes of climate change suddenly stopped and CO2 took ovet, with no attempt to explain how or why that would happen. Meaning that the coming climate change crisis is junk science.

But there is some real science defining CO2 as a greenhouse gas, which was known in the late 1800s.

The earth’s climate cannot be adequately modeled in a test tube.

Let’s assume your science is correct. There are numerous forces that act upon the climate. While our climate is sometimes chaotic, the system is biased towards equalibrium.

Second, the pejorative climate denier/climate change denier is laughable. Using that term to label those who dispute the hysteria shows a lack of understanding of the climate. Climate always changes. It’s supposed to change, has only and for all practical purposes will always change. Only those suffering Climate Change Hysterical Syndrome don’t understand this.

“The earth’s climate cannot be adequately modeled in a test tube.”

So what? Just because you can’t predict the amount of warming a greenhouse gas will cause is not evidence that a greenhouse gas isn’t a greenhouse gas.

First off, it’s not “my” science, it’s just science.
Secondly, the science shows that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. That science is correct.

Ironically, Svante Arrhenius believed that extensive fossil fuel use would eventually be beneficial to Northern countries like Sweden. (He thought in a couple of centuries).

What he called “beneficial” is eye-opening—a rise of 9 degrees C! No, not 0.9, but 9.0. Not F but C. Today, supposedly the target for avoiding serious harm is one sixth of that, or 1.5 degrees. How disappointed he would have been with an almost imperceptible two degrees of warming!

Incidentally Arrhenius’ interest was in trying to explain glaciations and interglacials based on CO2 being the master control knob. This was not his main work, it was described as more of a hobby for him.

Subsequent paleoclimate proxy data for temperature and CO2 have (or at least should have) falsified that simplistic model. Yet we still see the disproven idea, that CO2 has driven all climate change in almost every modern study.

This is the falsified hypothesis from the 1880s that is heralded as “settled science”.

Please don’t misread my comment as a denial of the radiative “greenhouse effect”. The falsified hypothesis to which I referred is that glaciations and interglacials are controlled by atmospheric CO2 levels.

I suppose that Arrhenius interpreted Tyndall’s work in light of the best available data, which turned out to be wrong (causing him to overestimate ECS.

The real situation is likely that we will never have an impact as much as 2C. I’m sure he’d view that as an almost insignificant but wholly beneficial change.

@ MarkW.

CO2 is a radiative gas. It acts as a conduit for radiative transfer of energy.

It does NOT operate anything like a greenhouse.

The whole terminology is FAKE, to create a certain anti-science impression of its effect..

There is no empirical evidence it causes any warming in the atmosphere,

Any warming conjecture is based purely on not understanding atmospheric physics.

That you feel the need to state the obvious seems to indicate that you haven’t been following the discussion for the last 30 years or so.

It’s effect is not currently measurable not because the effect is small, but because the weather is so noisy.

That CO2 can warm the atmosphere is basic physics.

Your sense of grief is palpable
Your sense of grief is caused by everything the socialist education system is foisting upon you
Your sense of grief is further bolstered by everything the socialist media is piddling
Your sense of grief is even further strengthened by the modeling of a virtual world and model outputs utilized as real world data indicating more than double the warming that is currently measured
Your sense of grief is compounded by the COP conferences AND G20 summits proclaiming that “This meeting will mark our LAST CHANCE to do something about Climate Change.”
Your sense of grief is unfounded however given actual real world data.

2001 Bonn Germany was the last opportunity
2005 Montreal was the Last Chance per the Independent

Your fears are unfounded and merely bolstered by an Agenda (Agenda 21) seeking to form a true global shadow government telling you what you can and can’t do, can and can’t eat, can and can’t drive, even what you can and can’t say and can and can’t think.

Pretty much we are in agreement on that Mark, but identical is a rhetorical bridge too far.

There is at least a prominent distinguishing mark on each of the twins. While both are collectivist totalitarian socialists, the communist is an international socialist, while the fascist is a national socialist. Fascists tend to be so nationalistic that they are usually racists as well, sometimes murderously so.

We usually think that Mussolini invented the national socialist category and gave it the name fascism, but I would argue that the rabidly racist Woodrow Wilson was a national socialist who predated him. There are plenty of arguments made that his war socialism was not socialism for the sake of winning a war, but war for the sake of imposing a national socialist order.

Since the invention of psychology the world has become a psychiatric ward with every conceivable thought listed as some sort of mental illness. It’s no surprise that genuine Christians are considered the most mentally ill of all by those who’s minds are the most educated yet the most polluted and depraved of all! The wisdom from the world is DEMONIC!
Now climate change grief? Wow, the day’s temperature goes up a degree and they’re crying big crocodile tears in their soup as one warms up the car to head off to the abortion clinic, and another is applying a heavy duty pancake makeup to cover a 5 o’clock shadow, and scouring the internet for a “woman’s” shoe size 13, triple E wide to go with the little pink tu-tu for tomorrow’s parade? And as a 5’3″, 135 lbs woman I am to blame as a climate change denier because I believe God is in control of His creation, and I don’t feel safe going to a public restroom for fear of there being a 6’4″ 200 lbs “woman” in the next stall who’s sobbing into his smartphone over some nonsensical thing?

Is it any wonder that their minds are in such a mess when they make bonfires for Bibles-the ONLY answer to their mental distress?

A Biblical healthy mind is the target of leftist hate mongering and Christians would do well to stay clear of any agreement to have a clinical psychologist “evaluate” your mental status, they will poison your mind. And if you didn’t have a mental issue before you will after they have invaded your inner most being, a place reserved for God alone. The Bible and the Spirit who wrote the Bible has EVERYTHING needed for psychological health which is spiritual in nature.
Climate change and global warming is a grand delusion of such magnitude that it could only come from the kingdom of darkness, otherwise how can anyone explain it’s immense power to deceive even the “best” minds??
It’s really difficult to have much if any compassion on those clamouring to save the planet while they kill babies in the womb and mutilate the genitals of children in the name of transgenderism, who flaunt the most degrading sexual preferences in lewd, licentious, and lascivious public displays of nudity in front of children.
If one engages the mind in one delusion after another, it really is only a matter of time before they will suffer some kind of psychological and emotional harm.

Keep bending the mind with delusions and sooner or later it will break! Illusion becomes reality, and reality becomes an illusion.

What a wimping out is the incessant call, “You owe me!”. For while any honest social contract is a swap of valued goods/services between adults reasonably competent in their valuation, professional victimhood is the arrested dependent childish state that enlists unilateral begging for what is so surely ‘deserved’, at the price of a stunted maturity thereafter in managing life’s continuing demands. Even a baby bird must eventually close its wide open mouth to its parent and learn to fly off on its own to find that food that suits its continued vitality.

commieBob

According to grievance studies professionals, you are either a victim or an oppressor. If you are an oppressor, you have to ‘do the work’ to understand your own evil and the evil of all your ancestors and the evil of just about everyone you ever knew because they are mostly all oppressors just like you.

The biggest and most obvious flaw with the above is that it absolves all victims of any responsibility for their own plight. Hey, quit school early, get a criminal record, get pregnant at 17. Can’t get or hold a job? It isn’t your fault, it’s those evil oppressors.

The other flaw is that the grievance studies professionals imagine they can see things as they actually are. They are seriously deluded. There are a few monks who have meditated for decades who can (mostly/sometimes/often) see things without preconceptions or judgment. The rest of us can’t. So to the grievance studies professionals I say, do the work yourself before you tell me to do the work. You have no clue what the work actually is and how clueless you actually are.

These professors come up with some of the most maniacal and deviant conclusions ever devised by the human mind! Twisted, dark and off the wall whacko babble!
Yeah…some of my ancestors practiced human sacrifice in the Mayan temples of demon gods, but when God called me to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ not a single word was mentioned about my ancestors wickedness, I alone was called to accountability for my own personal sins. That eliminates me as an oppressor and the oppressed. But what about my European ancestry? I am sure that some would like to lay the sins of the IRA at my doorstep! And throw white privilege in my face because my father and his parents were Norwegian and Irish. But that is not going to happen any time soon because I will not take responsibility for the bombings committed by some of my IRA ancestors! And God will not utter a single word that will hold me guilty of their sins either. Of course I was blessed by having white ancestors, they brought the Bible to the other side of my ancestry who worshipped the Great White spirit, who is non other than SATAN! So which group do I belong to? The oppressed or the oppressor? I’d like to see the professor’s and the high minded with their silly PhD’s knock this one around, and not come out as the babbling idiots they are!!
There is a false teaching in some churches that call for GENERATIONAL REPENTANCE…..ie: repentance for ancestors and ancestral sins! Seems to me that this akin to a subtle form of necromancy, praying TO the dead, praying FOR the dead, and REPENTING for the dead! This is the SAME kind of WORK, just with a religious face! This is very catholic with their dead saints who they pray to and venerate, and is also very much a part of the practices of Native American spirituality where ancestor worship and necromancy is at the core of their religion.
The Bible teaches that the son shall not be punished for the father’s sins, nor will the father be punished for the son’s sins, for each man will be punished for his own sins.
The whole idea of repenting for the sins of ancestors is PAGAN, repenting for and being baptized in proxy for the dead is a main theme and practice of Mormonism, an anti-christ religion disguised as Christian.
These professors can babble and theorize how to make society work without God’s imput through His Word, but every attempt whether religious or pagan will blow up in their faces every time because each attempt falters by the denial of personal sin and individual accountability to God for that sin.
It’s funny how all the professors are all guiltless and the rest of humanity is mentally ill to one degree or another!
Big pharma is laughing all the way to the BANK with each newly discovered mental illness invented by men with PhD’s that can’t tell the difference between a male and a female even with biological evidence staring them right in the face.
If anyone deserves to be mocked into derision and locked up in rubber rooms it’s these guys!

“We can stop using fossil fuels but so far we’ve completely failed to do so…”

So what’s stopping you? All you climate change obsessives need to do is boycott anything that is produced using fossil fuels. That is, you personally, stop using fossil fuels. You said we can, so get on with it. You will create a market for fossil free products and damage the market for anything tainted with fossil fuels, so what are you waiting for?

I am suffering from “Climate change solution grief”:

I am afraid of hypothermia because the climatists will have banned affordable heating.

I am concerned about starvation because farming without hydrocarbon fuels will never keep up with the demands of the population.

I am worried that I will never see my family again once the climatists wake up to the fact that there aren’t enough minerals to manufacture the batteries for electric cars for everyone.

I don’t suppose, however, that my grief will be acknowledged by the MSM. At best I’ll be told to ‘Pull myself together”, at worst I’ll be sent to the Gulag for denialism.

My parents generation did not have much sympathy for people that had the following characteristics:
-Having a chip on your shoulder
-Being self righteous
-Having self pity, or feeling sorry for yourself
-Being thin skinned

All of the above now seem to be traits to be acquired and mastered, especially as they are so useful for gaining control over others.

The grief that I feel is for the total disregard for the scientific method and valid scepticism that scientists should practice. HOW DARE THEY use the term “climate denier” when there is ample evidence to suggest that atmospheric carbon dioxide has nil to very minor effect on climate. HOW DARE THEY ignore hard won scientific evidence that climate is affected by numerous factors. HOW DARE THEY ignore that the Medieval Warm Period, the Roman Warm Period, and the Minoan Warm Period all occurred during pre-industrial revolution times. HOW DARE THEY fail to acknowledge the four periods of Late Proterozoic world-wide glaciation, as well as the one during the Late Ordovician all occurred when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were up to 20-25 times higher than current levels.

Oh that is so apposite: “Global warming allows the upper-middle-class to join the proletariat, cloaking erstwhile oppressors in the mantle of righteous victimhood.”

Just perfect, it sums up precisely why it is only the middle class whites, and at that, the ones that have underachieved, support climate change.

I also think their underachievement compared to their peers who went into banking, law, engineering etc, make them envious, and this is why they want to destroy capitalism. Because despite their education, they missed out. They failed. Envy.

icisil: speaking of patterns, in the US we see a similar formulation, “racism is a public health crisis.” If we don’t see it that way, it makes them sad. Soon to be diagnosed by our betters in the press. So we had better sit down and shutup so lefties can have the floor and not face criticism from deplorable people like me. Mr Baute’s depression would clear up (he thinks) if we just stop talking. The left is so clever and creative at identifying new mental health “problems” that just happens to be “solved” by the same solution to every other non-problem they identify.

Someone should write a PHD thesis on “Victim Envy”. I see or read about a lot of people who really would like to be oppressed. It would excuse all the failures in their life. It would allow them to do a lot fun stuff like acting out and getting in the face of their “oppressors”.

Many people seem to lack purpose in life and having a cause (pick one at random) seems give meaning to their lives. Climate victumhood is a big tent and anyone can join. To many people it does not matter if it’s true or not.

Ha ha ha. Hey, that’s a nice little Western Civilization you’ve got there. It would be a shame if anything happened to it.

In the current age of leftist environmentalism, intersectionality, and electioneering, the brokering of victim status of cryo-babies, Climate Scientologists, CAGW alarmists and other eco-loons was inevitable. They have to know where they sit on the modern left’s power curve, don’t they? It’s an election year, fer goodness sake.

But it still leaves much room for debate. Does the pain of well-known white climate criers like Eric Holthaus who voluntarily dons a climate hair shirt, and thus can never again step foot on a modern airliner, or a openly Christian white woman like Katherine Hayhoe who accepts the faint glow of righteousness of the both Michael Mann AND normal Saints and the likes of Mother Theresa, trump the victim-hood of a hedge fund managing, black, transsexual, formerly gay, but now ostensibly heterosexual woman with a penis? We know climate change will disproportionately affect the poor more than the wealthy, so do we count the value of government benefits and food stamps into our equations? And what if your skin has been ripped off after you glued yourself to a train station, a pipeline, a road or a barricade for your cause? That should count for something, too. It’s far too complicated for a person like me to decide. So I will wait for the mobs looting Portland, Seattle and Chicago for the final ruling. A thousand white Antifa rioters trying to burn a Portland police station, or inner-city black rioters clearing out a Chicago Nike store have never been known to be wrong, have they?

If someone has climate grief they are a victim of propaganda which means the propagandists are making people mentally and physically ill and weak with their constant false climate crisis claims, unprepared for the real world.

This notion of acknowledging those with “Climate Grief” reeks of the 4th principle of Robert Lifton’s “Eight Principles of Mind Control: Ideological Totalism”:

http://protocriteria.com/index.php/eight-principles-of-mind-control/

The Cult of Confession demands that we should confess to “crimes we have not committed, to sinfulness that is artificially induced, in the name of a cure that is arbitrarily imposed.”

The same can be seen with the concept of White Privilege that leads mindless idiots to kneel before a certain group of people, simply because of the color of their skin, and apologize for things they didn’t do and for things they never had any control over.

Once the drive to create, produce, achieve, invent and generally make life better is replaced with a desire to be a victim with no autonomy, wholly dependant on the state for every need, and forever aggrieved, the end of modern society is near.
People who dream romantically of the apocalypse will soon feel the painful reality, at which point they will be in no position to change course. The success of modern human society is a mighty edifice built on a complex foundations that include, rational thought, imagination, exploration, striving, competition, reward and punishment, freedoms, and democratic cooperation. We live in a time when the ironically named “progressives” are trying to disassemble each and every one of those foundations.

An illustration used by my former psychiatrist acquaintance and mental health clinic boss when I was in the Navy went like this:

Person: My brother thinks he is a chicken.
Psychiatrist: We can fix that, bring him in tomorrow.
Person: Can’t do that.
Psychiatrist: Why not?
Person: We need the eggs.

It is a simple exchange to explain why sanity is illusive. Societal insanity and the desire for the “eggs” is making a lot of us pretty uncomfortable right now and it has nothing to do with grief!!! It’s time to get treatment.
