People of Colour Experience Climate Grief More Deeply Than White People

We are not only disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, but we carry a pain that comes from a long history of racial terror.

By Nylah Burton May 15 2020, 1:24am

In an article for Vox, Cruse, a Wiradjuri, Gomeroi, and Monaroo-Yuin storyteller, told me, “We see and feel the spirit of our animals and our land; they are our ancestor spirits. We don’t own country, country owns us; we come from her to protect her. When country hurts, we hurt. When our animals, our spirit cousins, cry, we cry.”

“Just like other stressors that people of colour experience, ecological grief is often magnified,” said Dr. Tyffani Dent, a licensed psychologist and author, in an interview.

People of colour know…society is going to make sure we’re impacted first, and impacted the hardest,” Dent said.

Research has bolstered the idea that white supremacy has led to the climate crisis. Scientists from University College London found that the mass genocide that accompanied the colonization of the Americas in the 15th century permanently altered Earth’s climate, due to “a huge swathe of abandoned agricultural land” that “pulled down enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to eventually chill the planet.”

Worldwide, the memory of indescribable racial terror informs the climate grief of our people.

“There’s a certain loneliness that comes with being a climate person,” Heglar said. “Then there’s an extra layer of loneliness that comes with being a climate person of colour, because you’re just stuck in this perpetual position of trying to save white people from themselves. And it’s so fucking exhausting.”

I hope the author someday finds a way to feel less lonely.

Black people are responsible for global warming. We all know that a black car is way hotter than a white car when parked in the sun. Thanks to colonial medicine, black populations in Africa and around the world have grown exponentially. This has meant a sudden, vast number of people retaining heat and causing the planet to warm. I suggest that all black people apply light colour make-up to reflect the heat and cool down the planet.

Other than the statement “people of colour”, the article doesn’t identify what race this is from. Unless that description has an identity I don’t know about.

As far as I can make out, it’s anybody who is NOT white knows all about spirits and life and balance, but this white guy makes me hurt all the time.

It’s odd. I can easily identify many races around the world who are fiercely independent. So who is this author and their culture?

It would be a lot more convincing if for instance indigenous Americans felt strongly enough about this to trade their Ford pickup trucks in for travois poles to haul needed supplies across the countryside to stock their casinos in that much more environmentally suitable traditional way (even making some allowances in dragging them behind Spanish-introduced horses). And of course automobiles are likewise such an burdensome white European imposition that fully woke folks identifying themselves with any other continental descent will also wish to avoid them; as well as aircraft, rail transport, steel, aluminum, and for New Worlders the wheel itself. Air conditioners, refrigerators, clothes washer/dryers, microwave ovens, and any electric motor driven tools must surely be next on the alien list to truly remain unsullied by Caucasian contrivances.

But an unforeseen difficulty with such resulting fulsome purity is that someone is bound to notice that Caucasian happens to contain the word ‘asian’ in it, posing a similar difficulty to that encountered by radical feminists who balked at identifying as women with ‘men’ in it. What a headache.

Sure, not on Our Side.

What’s interesting is how on the other side/hand, they never reproduce skeptical arguments—not without first attenuating them to the point where transmission and infection become impossible—because for them, as for every fragile, frightened, false ideology in history, it’s all about doctrinal hygiene.

This glaring difference is just one of the metrics that, all on its own, would enable the average Venusian, Alpha Centaur or Morlock to deduce which “side” of the climate debate is full of bullmilk and knows it, even with having once set foot on the Earth’s surface.

The inability to honestly paraphrase, or better yet quote, one’s opponent is a dead giveaway of bad faith.

Another clue is the way one “side” in this debate has spent 30 years denying the very existence of the debate.

Klimateering was invented by white people of the woke persuasion for political ends that are not good for the vast majority of white people or other colors. Among the vast majority, I include the hundreds of millions of useful idjits that don’t know they are being used and what happens to them when they are no longer needed (witness the partial awakening of Michael Moore who suddeny saw through at least the window dressing for the ugliness – good first step Michael).

The white woke even are unaware of the glaringly obvious fact that when you as a group think you need to speak for, guide and save the other ‘helpless’ ‘hapless’ races from harm, that this is the deepest form of raс☆зм and faс☆зм that can be expressed. Certainly the yellow race is not taken in by this, nor the brown race of Asia. Nor African leaders who cynically just want to monetize this opportunity and don’t by in large care much about the people they are supposed to care about.

Indeed. And doesn’t the fact that you (the woke folk) feels the need to “speak for, guide and save the other ‘helpless’ ‘hapless’ races ” inherently point to you believing those races are somehow inferior by virtue of the fact that you consider them incapable of speaking for, guiding, and saving themselves and in need of their superior (you, the woke folk) doing so for them?

Yep, I just said that you’d just said what he just said. Obviously, if you were disagreeing with him, in your restatement of what he’d just said you wouldn’t have asked him whether or not what you’d just said wasn’t equivalent in meaning to what he’d just said. You would’ve abandoned the redundancy in favor of saying something like, “I disagree, blah blah blah.”

Or so I assume. I certainly can’t presume the mind of intelligentsia.

Yes. I never got this ‘white supremacy’ thing, because it’s clear that most white people are terribly gullible and many are happy to sell out their own people in return for being told they’re a good boy; it’s a huge mental flaw.

As far as I can see ‘white supremacist!’ is just the new ‘racist!’ now that ‘racist!’ has largely stopped working. And it fails badly because there are very, very few white supremacists in the real world.

You can often see pieces like this, written by promoters of the victim culture, and they do gain traction amongst the faithful, but I’m not sure they are particularly significant.

Forgive me for a slightly tangential comment-
Visitors to the antipodes who keep their eyes and ears open cannot fail to notice the stark lack of integration and assimilation amongst the aboriginal folk of Australia, who are massively under-represented at all levels and types of commercial life, despite huge and prolonged efforts to promote inclusivity. In contrast, the native folk of New Zealand are so much a part of everything in NZ that race goes mostly ignored. Clearly some will say that this is the result of historic discriminations in Aus which were not repeated to the same extent in NZ, and I guess such a case can be made. Certainly the maori were never subdued in the same way. What is not usually remarked, however, is the very different racial origins of the two aboriginal peoples – Aus having perhaps the oldest, unchanged in situ culture in the world, and NZ, despite its proximity, having only recently been populated by a very different, younger, and more adventurous people. Genetics is a part of this.

There. That’s something to provoke comment, eh? Discuss.

Your name says it all and I fear I am setting myself up here ‘Mothcatcher’.

I spent some time with a full blood Walpiri woman in Australia’s Red Center. She was one of the most inspirational people that I ever had the privilege to meet. To be honest, you don’t come across alot of indigenous people in the major cities of Australia. There are people who identify as indigenous and come from a mixed ethnic background and if you passed them in the street you may not recognise their Aboriginality. Many of these people express a strong connection to their indigenous roots which is admirable. I don’t understand why they don’t acknowledge their European heritage, which in many instances makes up most of their ethnicity. I also don’t understand where their hate of ‘white’ people comes from given that that’s a good part of their heritage and many of them have never been to the Center.

Dispite the world opinion of the treatment of Australia’s indigenous people, much of it comes from ignorance or from leftist propaganda. That’s not to say there are no issues, there most definitely are but it doesn’t have to be as bad as it is. Our indigenous people have free medical and dental care, free travel and free education through to university. If the child lives in a remote area then their education at a private boarding school is covered. Accommodation is also provided to them.

The reality is that many of the indigenous children of ‘The Red Center’ never go to school even when good schools are available. Many indigenous people of the outback don’t speak English. They don’t speak ‘Aboriginal’ either, in that there are hundreds of tribal languages and tribes are only likely to know the language of their nearest neighbors. Children are traditionally raised by their grandmother’s. Many of these women want to adhere to traditional tribal laws and sending these children to a white man’s school does not fit in with tradition. This is somewhat a moot point, these remote areas are hundreds of kilometers apart and the communities are small. There are no jobs to be had out there. Learning traditional skills is more useful to these people, with the added advantage of 4 wheel drive vehicles, rifles and mobile phones.

Most people don’t know that indigenous Australians hold land rights to vast areas of Central Australia and anyone crossing these lands needs a special permit and must not turn off the road. They also receive large royalties from mining companies. I personally have no issues with any of this. The problem is however that greed and corruption exist in every society. There is a tribal law that states the you cannot refuse a request of goods or money from your kin. This law is abused broadly. How many indigenous communities miss out on royalties because they don’t understand their rights according to the white man’s law because of language barriers? They don’t even know they are entitled to royalties, their own kin take advantage. Then there are those who are fully aware of their entitlements but still adhere to the tribal law of handing over what they have on request to family. I heard of an indigenous person who received more than $300,000 in mining royalties and it was all gone within a few months. Traditional law says you cannot refuse kin.

My Walpiri friend related how her father saw his first white man as a teenager. She talked of a massacre that took place resulting in the deaths of many indigenous people. She said it was in retaliation to the killing of a white man. She also said that the tribe saw this retaliation as aligning with their own tribal law. Traditional tribal law is brutal, Australian indigenous people were never subdued. If a tribal law was broken and it was deemed to be significant then people were punished. Rape and murder of whole families of other tribes including children were the most severe forms of punishment. If a woman happened across secret men’s business accidentally then that was punishable by death depending on how close they came. If an aboriginal man died of illness his wife was punished by his family for not caring properly for him. These forms of punishment still occur. If a member of the tribe were old and could not keep up when searching for water they were left behind.

Life was harsh, still is for some. If the British hadn’t colonised Australia it would have been one country or another. It was inevitable, the global population is more than 7 billion, Australia was never going to remain solely occupied by it’s indigenous population. There is little point in trying to relate the knowledge and lifestyle we have today with the early days of colonisation. Life was harsh for the colonial people too and most of them didn’t choose to be there.

Shouldn’t we be working toward how we can improve the quality of life for those indigenous people who are out of reach through language barriers by way of working beside those indigenous people who were lucky enough to have been educated and have a better understanding of how things could be?

Sorry, but it’s the leftists that gets in the way of resolving these issues and perpetuate hate.

My Walpiri friend was educated to university level, she successfully entered politics with the aim of helping indigenous Aboriginals living in central Australia. She has always lived in indigenous communities, her life story has been entrenched in the difficulties of life for the Aboriginals. She was vilified by her own people from the cities because of political differences. Instead of working with a full blood indigenous women who understood and lived the problems of her people they drove her out of politics. Nasty tactics, some indigenous, not my story to tell.

It’s easy to throw blame and the racist word around, reality and truth are so much more complicated. There is no comparison between Australia’s natives and the New Zealand natives. Effectively you are talking about assimilation, it was easier for the New Zealand native to get used to the idea of white people (like it or not), it is a small country and they would have been more exposed to each other. The size of Australia in itself made it difficult to even know where different tribes were located, they were nomads too and the locations were often located in remote areas that were difficult to reach. There was more than three hundred different tribal languages.

Life is complicated. Whatever the circumstances, the left do not want to have a conversation, they stick with the propaganda without understanding how things are, so until that changes little else will change.

They even demonstrated their progress to date to Cortes’ executive officer, Pedro de Alvarado, but he was apparently too impatient to recognize their promising accomplishment.

Vice is so successful that it is laying off 155 workers

Vice has a $5.7 billion valuation and more than $1 billion in investments from Fox, Disney and TPG.

Vice conducted a round of layoffs in July 2017, cutting 2% of staff, or around 60 employees, as it reoriented around its video efforts following a $450m capital infusion from TPG.

Vice also announced a sliding scale of pay cuts for employees earning $100,000 or more; a temporary suspension on promotions; and a halt on company-matched 401(k) contributions.

https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/vice-media-layoffs-155-employees-covid19-1234607610/

This follows 2019’s firings: 10% of staff, laying off 250 employees amid a revenue slowdown.
Vice’s revenue has stagnated. In 2018, the company projected revenue to be between $600m and $650m (flat with 2017) and was expecting to lose $50m, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The University College study referred to claims that releasing the agricultural land back into the wild would have reduced the CO2 content of the atmosphere by 7 – 10 ppm.

Using 5.35 x log(CO2 after / CO2 before) to get the reduction in radiation from the Earth’s surface and then applying the Stefan Boltzmann law, I estimate that a reduction of 8.5 ppm would have lowered the average temperature at the Earth’s surface by 0.03 degrees C.

And this is responsible for plunging the Earth into the Little Ice Age ?

David beat me to the main point, but also consider this:

If the climate were really so sensitive to a 7-10 ppm drop in CO2 levels, then the 125+ ppm increase over the last 200 years or so (about 15x larger change) would have the “oceans boiling” now. The idea that the climate could be that sensitive to small CO2 changes is completely contradicted by the evidence.

If only we could turn the clocks back to those blissful times in history before the white races emerged,
Those halcyon days, so calm so constant.
Those days when the Sahara was a plain of such magnitude the wild beasts roamed. The desert then came and we became slaves to the black lords who commanded us, gave us purpose. We built mighty structures in the desert to honour their greatness. It was our privilege to work constantly for them it was an honour to die so young in their service. They were so wise and we so ignorant, we were privileged to be slaves in their households.
Only when the white tribes emerged did this great joy of servitude decline.
The British used their mighty ships to stop the slave traders from continuing their travel service to better lands.
No more virgin sacrifices in those far off lands to the West, how would we pacify the Great Earth Gods? Who would still the grumbling ground, now the white tribes blocked our path up the mountain?
Then came the a final blow to our traditional life. Clean water supply and medicines to cure us of god given illness. Why could they not have left us alone?
Nothing was ever the same. Oh for the halcyon days of our ancestors, the “dream times”, what dreams they were….

In a context such as this, race is far more a proxy for culture than anything else. This is dialectical thinking, where type is “white” with presumed attributes that we quickly are told are dangerous and “people of color”, no matter what other real racial characteristics, who are always environmentally pure and who are always exploited. Like in the dialectical model, the type is known while the antitype is constructed so that when the comparison is made, the answer is always predictable. In this case, the white peoples are always evil and the “people of color” whoever they may be are always virtuous, despite the universally constant of human nature.

But what is problematic of the white culture named in this article? I think the real complaint is against the vestiges of the Founding culture of this country, which were rooted in European Protestant Christianity. The complaint is weaponized wokeness against cultural attributes that oppose wokeness such as self sufficiency, hard work, rationalism towards natural resources, thrift and families. Just notice all such similar complaints. Notice the constant pattern of “white” vs “people of color” and notice the similarities. This is not about race but about culture and thus how policy reflects culture.

Sorry I’m not very clever on this stuff but I think it’s all part of the “it’s not fair” brigade mixed with the neo marxists.
Neo marxists are always looking for someone to save. They need a victim and an oppressor.

I could buy into what these people of color are trying to say if they changed the headline to “Phony white elitist parasites led to the phony climate crisis”, except that they will still vote for Biden anyway.

Hello people of color – normal white people and everyone else has to put up with their human tapeworm-like behavior too, just as much as you do, so stop fkin voting for them and then whining about it. Go on, I’ll say please, pretty please even.

taxpayer-funded ABC Australia is totally out of control:

18 May: Institute of Public Affairs: ABC Climate Activism Unearthed By IPA FOI
by Evan Mulholland, Director of Communications
As uncovered (PAYWALLED LINK) by Chris Kenny in The Australian today, over 300 pages of Freedom of Information documents obtained by free market think tank the Institute of Public Affairs have exposed the motives behind the ABC staff initiated ‘Climate Crisis Advisory Group’ which put the ABC completely at odds with mainstream Australians.
Upon hearing about the initiative by ABC staff member Barbara Heggen who sent an email to all staff proposing the initiative, many staff responded with glee at the flawed idea of “solutions-based journalism” for climate change reporting.
The responses well and truly demonstrate that the ABC is run by a staff collective…

How can we expect the ABC to cover very serious policy discussions like the cost of climate policies impartially, when so many staff hold an activist position on the topic?
These FOI documents highlight that it is well and truly time for a serious and sober debate post-coronavirus on privatising the ABC. If ABC staff want to run a biased broadcaster, then Australian taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to fund it.

A poll released by the IPA recently (LINK) found that only 32% of Australians believe the ABC represents the views of ordinary Australians, yet 100% of Australians are forced to fund it…

(Music)
Climate change is coming. It’s here! The threat is causing grief for scientists but also for our artists, and here Missy Higgins, one of Australia’s supreme musicians, talks to Jonica Newby in a Science Show special about solastalgia and what it means for her.

AUDIO: 53m52s: 9 May: ABC The Science Show: Climate grief (1)
This is a time, not only for information and policy, but for emotion. How are all of us, not just the scientists, but the musicians, priests, schoolkids, even the comedians dealing with possible global upheavals, the turmoil that comes with severe climate change?
In this occasional Science Show series, we shall hear from singer Missy Higgins, performers Charlie Pickering and Craig Reucassel, and young people who’ve led the strikes.
This week professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg from the University of Queensland, a world-renowned marine scientist and contributor to IPCC assessments, talks about the likely loss of the Great Barrier Reef. How does a determined, optimistic researcher keep going amid the upsets?

Missy Higgins?

What? Even WHO managed to book Lady Gaga.

Lift your game, ABC!

Snark aside what you may not seeing as an outsider is just how big the ABC is media wise in Australia.

Under the ABC banner we have their TV empire, consisting of several stations ranging from kids tv to a dedicated news platform. There is their radio empire, consisting of Radio National, Triple JJJ (the National ‘Youth’ Network run by and dedicated to aging hipsters) and local AM stations. They have their online wing.

The only think they are really lacking is a print media presence, but print media is devolving into such a specialist market that it is almost novelty these days, to put it politely.

In real terms that is a massive slice of market share, all controlled in practical terms by the same people.

Want to push an issue? The ABC has the ability to reach and influence people in a manner past dictators would only dream about. The ABC is now so big and independent they commission and run their own opinion polls to determine if they are still the most trusted and loved media source in Australia and the government, who are meant to be in some sort of control, meekly accepts this.

From the article: ““There’s a certain loneliness that comes with being a climate person,” Heglar said. “Then there’s an extra layer of loneliness that comes with being a climate person of colour, because you’re just stuck in this perpetual position of trying to save white people from themselves.”

What about people who are not pure white? You know, like Barack Obama, and me, and no doubt a very large section of the U.S. population? What about all us half-breeds?

Do we only have half a layer of loneliness, since we are only part “of color”?

One can really simplify thoughts about life by blaming all one’s problems on others. That way you don’t have to take any responsiblity or action for yourself. That’s what is happening here, and in every mind that thinks this way.

The politics of victimhood on dispay. Oh, woe is me! It’s all the fault of the white man. I’m so helpless I can’t do anything without the permission of the white man.

I think people who think like this are their own worst enemy.

White man caused a famine in the 15th century because of lands that had laid bare since the 14th century plague reduced the population by one third? You really couldn’t make it up.

And, hey, it’s the white supremacists that did it. Those nasty white, old, educated and skilled ones really are the pits. As an old white educated man I consider that, perhaps, it is about timd I started behaving like a supremcist fascist. Tempting!

say what?

Which “scientists” exactly? Where was the “large swath of agricultural land” you are referring to? No? Well then…I’m done reading as were you when you found that little tidbit but failed to cite it.

I’ve never understood the idea of putting people down to make them feel empowered. Seems to me the author of this fishwrap article needs to wake up a bit more and realize that people are people and constant flagellation on the differences vs the similarities does absolutely nothing but continue a vicious cycle best left buried on the side of the road.

As near as I can tell, the liberal definition of a white supremacist goes something like this:
Anyone who doesn’t agree that whites are responsible for all problems in the world.

White Christians, with help from any who were able and willing, eradicated the slave trade and were well on their way to destroying the atheist religion known as Communism in the 20th Century. Sadly, the fanatical followers of this cult buried into the belly of the nascent Green movement like some newly hatched alien in a SF film!
Now we must deal with GangGreen; the MOST racist and destructive entity in human history! Who prevents people in Africa from achieving energy independence with clean,coal-fired electricity? GangGreen!
Who stops farmers from growing Golden Rice and preventing blindness in tens of thousands of children in the Third World? GangGreen!
The ill-educated and brainwashed followers of the Progressive Cult of Climatology are indeed mostly white, so I suppose one could say that white supremacy is at fault. But it would be more accurate to call it eco-imperialism with Western elites keeping the Third World nations in poverty and chains with their misguided attempts to prevent a crisis that doesn’t actually exist!
It’s long past time to revive the Abolition Movement and aim it squarely at GangGreen and the other denominations of the Progressive religious cult. ALL humans deserve the chance to achieve freedom and prosperity; massive governmental bureaucracies can only deliver poverty and prison!

Not even original. 46 years ago Jefferson Starship wrote these lyrics to one of their songs:

It’s like a tear in the hands of a western man,
Tell you about salt, carbon and water
But a tear to a Chinese man,
He’ll tell you about sadness and sorrow
Or the love of a man and a woman.

I sure am glad that rock music lyrics are practically unitelligible, for reasons just like the one you mentioned. I wouldn’t want politics to intrude on my music, and it doesn’t because I, to this day, don’t know the lyrics to most rock songs although I have heard them all numerous times, and still listen to that kind of music, which I love.

But I don’t like musicians making me angry by taking some stupid political stand and trying to foist it off on me through their song, because it distracts from the music, but they don’t make me angry for the most part because I can’t tell exactly what they are saying, and that’s a good thing it turns out. An unexpected plus for rock music.

Rock music is the greatest. Leftwing politics inserted into rock music sucks big time.

To me it’s like watching tv and seeing a political statement masquerading as a comedy show, and if I disagree with the politics, then I don’t watch that program anymore. I would do the same with rock music. I like rock music enough to deliberately keep myself unknowledgeable about the politics of the musicians. I don’t want to know anything about them. I don’t want to know what politics they promote (of course, that’s not always possible). All I want is to enjoy their music. I can make up my own lyrics, ot judy hum along.

Screaming guitars = Great Music!

Just in case anyone might have forgotten THIS is how Hitler did it.

They didn’t throw the Jews in the camps the first day, they spent about ten years justifying it – justifying fear, bigotry, and hate.

I am a person of color. I am white. White is a color, right?

I have no idea what a “climate person” is. What IS a climate person? If I knew what one was, and I was one, then I too would be a “climate person of color”. I would be a climate person of the color, white.

As a climate person of the color, white, I would then preach about the issue of person-of-color supremacy, which involves the attitude of regarding one’s race as so distinct that all wrongs are wrongs directed at that race, which makes person-of-color supremacy a mere inversion of the supremacy being preached about under the name of “white supremacy”.

As a person of the color, white, I feel the historical weight of abuse by people of color who lump all persons of the color white into the same boat, in effect saying ALL persons of the color, white, are evil, which says what? — that the people making this assertion are doing the very thing that they are speaking against.

I keep asking this to no avail: what climate crisis? It is May in Edmonton, Alberta. If the weather is this good in Heaven, those angels have got it pretty good.

But, but, but… the seas are rising. (At an eighth of inch a year.) The Arctic is warming. (This would seem to me to be a plus if I lived above the Arctic circle, but I don’t, so I don’t care.) There are wildfires in Australia. (I don’t live there and will never go there.) Greta Thunberg’s childhood is missing. (She should asks her parents where it went, because they are the ones who talked her out of enjoying it.) David Suzuki is unhappy. (Good.)

I don’t care. I don’t care. Nyah, nyah, I don’t care.
