More Than 400 News Outlets Partner With A Project Seeking Media To Beef Up Climate Coverage Amid Pandemic

  •  A project co-founded by the Columbia Journalism Review is asking hundreds of news outlets to focus their reporting on climate change on Earth Day as journalists focus primarily on coronavirus coverage.
  • The journalist heading the effort believes the media should be devoting the same level of attention to global warming as they do to a virus that has killed more than 100,000 people worldwide.
  • Energy analysts and critics told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the project’s founders are “disconnected” from reality and are focusing on a vague problem while Americans are trying to “stay alive” and keep their jobs.”

Hundreds of media outlets, including Reuters, are partnering with a project seeking to devote a week of coverage to climate change amid a pandemic that has killed more than 140,00 people worldwide.

The founders behind Covering Climate Now are asking their network of more than 400 media outlets to blanket the airwaves with stories about climate change during the week of Earth Day. Reuters, Bloomberg News, and The Daily Beast are among the biggest names listed as partners of the project.

Covering Climate Now, founded in 2019, announced the event on Feb. 5, before local and state governments began mitigation efforts to halt the spread of the pandemic. One of the project’s founding groups, the Columbia Journalism Review, represents professional journalists and focuses primarily on journalism ethics.

Covering Climate Now’s partners published a deluge of climate-related news in September 2019 ahead of the U.N. Climate Action Summit, held Sept. 15-23. It is now asking its media partners to renew their efforts, moving from discussing climate change to tackling potential solutions.

The latest effort is slated to happen April 19-26 and is soliciting coverage addressing solutions such as putting “a price on carbon” and halting “fossil fuel subsidies, as well as political actions to advance such policies,” Covering Climate Now notes on its event page.

The project’s co-founder, Mark Hertsgaard, has said news outlets should be devoting the same amount of time to climate change as they do COVID-19. The disease, which is caused by the novel coronavirus, originated in China before landing on the shores of the United States, where it has killed more than 25,000 people.

“Stories on other subjects have all but disappeared, and some newsrooms have halted production on non-coronavirus stories altogether,” Hertsgaard wrote in a March 25 blog post contrasting how the news outlets cover climate change with how they treat a pandemic.

Hertsgaard goes on to lament the gap he sees between coverage of coronavirus and climate change. (RELATED: Exclusive: Inside The Media Conspiracy To Hype Greta Thunberg)

“While this is understandable given the scope of the COVID-19 threat,” Hertsgaard notes, “it is bizarre that the climate crisis has never been accorded comparable importance, even though it too stands to upend, impoverish, and even end the lives of countless people the world over.”

Hertsgaard has not responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s repeated requests for comment about the Covering Climate Now project. He told CJR editor and publisher, Kyle Pope, in September 2019 that the project “has an aroma” of “activism” in the minds of many journalists.

The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal have not responded to the DCNF’s request for comment explaining why they are not taking part in Covering Climate Now. (RELATED: Exclusive: Inside The Media Conspiracy To Hype Greta Thunberg)

Hertsgaard told Pope that he’s trying to change that perception. There were roughly 200 outlets involved in the partnership last September when Covering Climate Now was requesting reporters blanket news coverage with climate stories. The project has since approximately doubled.

“Partnering with Covering Climate Now to provide access to a selection of Reuters new and existing climate coverage free of charge allows other members to make the issue more accessible to their audiences, should they choose,” Reuters spokeswoman Deepal Patadia told TheDCNF.

Patadia did not address to what degree Reuters would should be shifting their focus away from the pandemic. Reuters joined the project in December 2019, less than three months after Covering Climate Now’s initial climate coverage kicked off in September of that year.

Bloomberg News, The Daily Beast, and CJR have not responded to requests for comment. Neither Bloomberg nor The Daily Beast have confirmed whether they will participate in the upcoming effort.

BuzzFeed participated in the project’s effort in September but chose not to be involved in next week’s climate coverage initiative, spokesman Matt Mittenthal told the DCNF without providing an explanation. BuzzFeed is still listed among Covering Climate Now’s partners.

Energy analysts and other critics, meanwhile, believe Hertsgaard, Covering Climate Now, and others involved in the project, are disconnected from reality.

“It’s a disconnect with what’s happening in the real world. People are doing the best to flatten the curve, and they’re wringing their hands over climate change,” American Energy Alliance President Tom Pyle told the DCNF. “There is no satisfying these people. It’s an obsession.”

“They want to cover climate change when people are trying to stay alive during a pandemic and keep their jobs or find a new one to provide for their families,” he added.

Pyle said that journalists need to focus their attention on the virus rather than a vague concern about a climate crisis, Pyle noted.

Efforts to mitigate coronavirus have all but left the economy in tatters, with more than 20 million people having filed for unemployment since officials began issuing orders for citizens to shelter in place. Media outlets are focusing the bulk of their resources on reporting out the twists and turns as the virus continues spreading.

Advocacy-style journalism is the new in-thing, according to David Blackmon, an independent consultant and analyst who has nearly 40 years experience in the energy industry.

“I don’t think that anyone would object to any of it if they were upfront about their agenda,” he told the DCNF in November 2019, regarding Covering Climate Now’s first effort. “There’s no effort to properly identify agenda-driven pieces.

“They are backed up with factual information, but it usually tells just half the story. It’s become the norm,” he added. (RELATED: UN’s New Report Shows There’s ‘Little Basis’ For A Favorite Claim Of Climate Activists)

Blackmon, a Forbes contributor, noted that much of the reporting is one-sided and focuses exclusively on one narrative: Climate change must be stopped at any cost. Such reporting rarely gives coverage to the economic consequences of climate activists’ preferred policies, he noted at the time.

Sad. I remember when Columbia Journalism program was the standard and taught how to report the news. The shift to advocacy is just a sign of the times.

It seems that 97% of all news these days is reporters (and I use that word advisedly) telling everyone what they should do, from politics & economics to social lives. There is very little actual news, it’s all advocacy.

Well the bright side of COVID-19 is we get a free trial of what shutting down our economies feels like.

This means we will be in a much better position to weight it against what may hypothetical happen in 100 years time inside a climate model. Assuming, of course, that by then we have all been wiped out by a genetically modified virus made by some sorcerer’s apprentice character playing God in a P4 lab somewhere.

I’ve saying for years we will have many more serious problems to deal before AD 2100 rolls around and extrapolating models that far ahead is meaningless ( even if they were fit for purpose).

We just got a taste of how quickly things can change.

Zig, National and local News has turned into extensions of Oprah, Ellen, The View et. al. Mid morning gossip shows, all, were they jabber endlessly discussing how they “Feel” about what is going on in their world and what they believe Big Government ought to do about it, eliciting mindless cheers and applause from a brain dead audience of post 1990 public school graduates.

Throughout every advocacy broadcast masquerading as news, they stroke emotions with buzz words and catch phrases, stimulating the amygdala, eliciting fear and guilt, assigning blame and calling for more knee jerk overreaction from centralized authoritarian government to ‘address’ the problem with socialist solutions sans evidence, strategies or methods to measure success or failure

German TV after the daily new-show always present a Corona Special instead of the announced program, full of stories about personal problems of what persons ever, single mother with two kids and homeoffice, two parent households and three kids, mother homeoffice, father not able to care enough to “protect” mother from the children while she’s working and conferencing with collegues, nursering homes that have not enough masks etc….sport clubs, restaurants, it’s all soooo bad. 109 NINCOMPOOPS: 109 GROUPS WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO END CANADIAN OIL DURING A PANDEMIC CRISIS
April 17, 2020 EnergyNow Media
by Michael Binnion
https://energynow.ca/2020/04/column-109-nincompoops-michael-binnion-what-109-groups-have-nothing-better-to-do-during-a-pandemic-crisis/

109 different groups, who told you the planet was dying because of single-use plastics, just wrote a letter to their friends in the Liberal Government encouraging them to use the current crisis to end oil in Canada. The very oil that is used to make the single-use plastics that have made dramatic progress in the fight against infectious disease. The oil that makes the products that keep our food more hygienic. The oil that makes the products for personal protection gear for front line workers in hospitals. The oil that makes the single-use plastic ventilator tubes. These delusional people didn’t think about hygiene and infectious disease when they launched multi-million dollar campaigns to ban single-use plastics. They could have easily called it the ‘don’t worry about pandemics campaign’ because the planet needs you.

These people also asked for new taxes, for taxpayer subsidies and created divestment campaigns to spend trillions on renewable energy. Yes, there have been trillions spent already getting ready for a climate disaster. Is there anyone who doesn’t now wish some of this money went into an emergency response for pandemics? Some of the more radical of these groups have even had celebratory posts about our current crisis. Things like the virus aren’t the problem, people are the problem. They spent even more millions, if not billions on this campaign of ‘don’t worry about pandemics because the planet needs you’.

Normal people would be embarrassed that their nincompoopery diverted us from preparing for the current crisis. Normal people would be so ashamed they would be grateful for the Government mandated opportunity to hide isolated in their homes and hope no one remembered their myopic single focus on one of society’s problems to the exclusion of all others. Reasonable people might have gone so far as admitting the crisis shows we need a balanced approach, but we can’t forget the planet as we fight for our health and society. Principled people might have even publicly apologized and offered some of their millions in campaign funds to help save lives from COVID-19.

Not our friends in the 109 groups below. They are so out of touch with the reality people are facing today they think now is the time to double down on getting rid of the very product essential to keep us healthy and to fight the pandemic. You can’t build a windmill with a windmill and you can’t fight a pandemic with one either. There couldn’t be a worse time for our health care, for our society or for our road to economic recovery to be indulging these schmucks.

Now is a time for grown-ups. Courageous leaders and people are needed to make the tough decisions. We need to bolster our health care system now and for the future too. We need to make financial sacrifices and ensure we help our most vulnerable when there are no jobs. We need to get ourselves on the road to recovery as soon as possible to save our society. Nothing in that suggests reasonable people can’t care about the planet we live on at the same time.

Yet 109 groups actually thought a juvenile prank to lease an airplane and ironically pay for jet fuel, to advertise their ‘don’t worry about pandemics let’s end oil campaign’, was a mature thing to do. That they choose to be a repeat customer of the oil and gas business they want us to end just as we need it more than ever is simply breathtaking in its shameless hypocrisy. I wish I was making all this up.

Our Government has a choice. Show their contempt for the 109 groups or show their contempt for average Canadians struggling with the COVID-19 crisis. For grown-ups, this isn’t even a choice.

This is a list of the 109 organizations who participated in the letter campaign:

It would be fair justice if the tough climate Albertans decided to secede from Canada, either as an independent country or by allying with the USA. Albertans have more of the ‘rugged individual’ and ‘get it done’ mind set in common with Montanans, Idahoans, and North Dakotans, than the collective blood sucking Quebecois will ever understand.

The 109 organizations listed above by Allan MacRae, producers of nothing but their own waste, represent a taxonomy of Canadian blood sucking parasites: leaches, ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, black flies, and mental midges, masquerading as ‘environmentalists’ whilst collectively sucking the life’s blood of productive Canada dry.

During the American Revolution, some colonists who sympathized with England migrated north out of the colonies into Canada.

During the settlement of the U.S. Midwest, when prime homestead lands became more scarce, some settlers moved north into Canada.

Broadly speaking, each group of people carried with them their respective ethos.

GERMAN LAWYER WHO CRITICIZED LOCKDOWN ARRESTED, TAKEN TO PSYCH WARD
Thu, 04/16/2020 – 02:00
Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News,
https://www.zerohedge.com/political/german-lawyer-who-criticized-lockdown-arrested-taken-psych-ward

A German medical lawyer who criticized the coronavirus lockdown law was arrested and taken to a psychiatric ward, where she says she was violently abused by authorities.

Beate Bahner published a press release on April 3rd decrying the German lockdown laws as “flagrantly unconstitutional, infringing to an unprecedented extent many of the fundamental rights of citizens.”

“These measures are not justified by the Infection Prevention Act, hurriedly amended just a few days ago,” she asserted.

“Long-term restrictions on leaving home and meeting others, based on high-death-rate modelled scenarios, which fail to take account of actual critical expert opinions, and the complete shutdown of businesses and shops with no proof that they pose any risk of infection, are thoroughly unlawful.”

Bahner called for a nationwide protest on Easter Sunday to “end the tyranny at once,” before Heidelberg Police announced that they would seek to prosecute her for inciting Germans to break the law.

On April 13th, Bahner called her sister from Heidelberg’s Klinik fur Allgemeine Psychiatrie describing what happened to her.

After claiming she was “suspiciously” followed by a car, Bahner says she asked another motorist to call the police only for the police to show up, handcuff her and push her to the ground “with massive force.”

After being driven to the psychiatric facility, Bahner says she was treated like a terrorist.

“I asked to be allowed to sit down and was shown to a bench. Then I asked to have the handcuffs taken off, since it was actually I who had requested police protection,” she recounted.

“But instead, I was thrown to the floor again, having my head hurled onto the stone floor from a meter height, which nobody reacted to. Then I was forced to spend the night lying on the floor in some high-security Guantanamo psychiatric clinic…there was no toilet, no sink, though they did allow me water, and there was a bell I could ring, though they ignored it after the third time I pressed it.”

The lawyer was charged for incitement yesterday, with her attorney sounding the alarm bell over her treatment. “I shouldn’t have to add Bahner’s claims of very grave abuse have untoward connotations of the darkest chapters of German history,” he said.

“The mere fact she claimed to have been so badly abused was what prompted me to write to you. Bahner is in the company of over 50 well-known experts in criticising the nationwide lockdown; I would be glad to furnish you with a list of their names. If it really is the case lawyers critical of government measures can now be intimidated using the state legal apparatus or psychiatry, and can be professionally and socially destroyed, then it is five minutes to midnight in this country.”

Bahner has won three cases in the Federal Constitutional Court and written five books on German medical law.

Unfortunately only in German.

They chanted shouts like “We are the people”, as the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung reported. After Bahner came out of her hearing from the police headquarters, she stepped in front of the waiting people and declared that she had apologized to the police. Her injuries to her head and knee were said to have been caused by a bicycle fall she had “drunk”. The police officers had nothing to do with it.
[…]
Bahner caused a nationwide sensation when she was picked up in Heidelberg on the evening of Easter Sunday and briefly taken to a psychiatric institution. Shortly before 8 pm, the police press office reported, a witness called the police. In Thibautstraße / Bergheimer Straße in Heidelberg’s city center, a woman was standing who had stated that she was being followed. A police spokesman: “She made a very confused impression.”

The Mannheim police headquarters, however, explicitly emphasized that “the police actions on Sunday evening” are not connected to the investigations on suspicion of illegal activity.

Bahner had been dismissed again on Tuesday by the medical director.

Thank you Krishna,

I’ll take your cited story with the usual “tonne of salt”. {I hope you appreciated the metric units.)

I know that here in Calgary the police routinely and excessively beat and shoot civilians with little justification, and then they blatantly lie about the circumstances and their oversight bodies (aka the whitewash factory) routinely clear them of all wrongdoing.

In 2016 and again in 2018 our city police shot ~ten civilians per million population – that is ~10 times the average rate of police shootings of civilians elsewhere in Canada and across in the USA.

Furthermore, Calgarians are unarmed and generally polite and respective of authority. In contrast, civilians in the USA are often armed and tend to question authority, so it is understandable if US police are a bit twitchy – but there is no such justification in Canada.

I generally had a better impression of German police, having spent considerable time there in the 1980’s and 1990’s – the exception being the East German police and Stasi who acted more like our Calgary cops. However, I do not assume that the German police story is true – we’ll see.

She is in trouble regardless of the truth, she called for people to break the law in an emergency powers situation. Most people on the blog would have issues if XR8 asked people to go out an really break the law for climate change. You can’t have one set of laws for causes you agree with but not others, so you need to decide if what she did was okay then it is okay for XR8 to do the same.

She lost her appeal against the laws 3 days earlier because the emergency powers act gave the government the right

How about something with fairer odds?

It’s over 417 ppm at Mauna Loa right now, I’ll wager it drops below 415 ppm by year end.

Neo, while too many citizens are doing their Cipher impersonations I hope you stay safe and healthy in these parlous times. Don’t forget that the Chicoms are actually charging most of us for the honor of playing host to their latest worldwide export! Only the really special ones got to make money off the misery and deaths of others!
In honor of our new Chicom overlords I am working to expand my stir fry recipe list. What do you think of Bat $hi# Crazy Soup and Pangolin Rangoons? I’m so glad they isolated the city of Wuhan from the rest of China while still allowing flights to the rest of the world! It only makes sense to push for equality when you believe some are more equal than others! And the MSM kowtows in awe and devotion!

So the idea is to get together and all tell the same lie.
However, since all they have to work with is broken computer models that have never been able to forecast anything correctly, there is no indication of what is the best lie to tell.
XYZ is caused by global warming/climate change is unlikely to get anybody’s attention since XYZ is always changing. people have heard it all before. Climate change is not a one-time extreme weather event.
The problem is, as they found out in the old Soviet Union if you keep lying, sooner or later people start to not believe anything.
Catastrophic Climate Change is like predicting for the past 20 years that the Washington Nations are going to win the World Series, or Grimsby Town are going to get promoted and win the Champions League.

If we believe Patrick Moore, and the initial goal of the collapsed Soviet regime was to use the environmental movement to collapse capitalism, it would appear that th Corona Virus Pandemic has beaten them to the punch.
It remains to be seen whether the mainstream media and the Global Climate Change alarmists will be
relegated to the status of “useful idiots”.

What do you mean, ‘whether’ the alarmists and the MSM become the useful idiots of the UN/IPCC/UNFCCC. The relegation of alarmists to useful idiots who tacitly support global socialism started decades ago upon the formation of the UN, accelerated when the UN found what seemed like a plausible rationalization as the IPCC was formed and now, as they double down on the misinformation, more and more of the uninformed get suckered in to reinforce the deceptive narrative.

Nothing like going hungry to put the fears of the bien pensant pleb on the backburner. Methinks the thinking people aren’t going to be too impressed with the regurgitated output of computer models after this little planning fiasco, and being considered stupid isn’t cool.

From the above article: “One of the project’s founding groups, the Columbia Journalism Review, represents professional journalists and focuses primarily on journalism ethics.”

Therefore, I have to ask if it is professional and ethical to try to front an unproven, scientifically-debatable claim of AGW in place of the immediate, factual, developing story of COVID-19’s spread, rising death toll, and severe economic impacts across planet Earth.

I think you know the answer.

If military intelligence is an oxymoron “journalistic ethics” fits right in. Trained journalists, editors, and publishers should find getting-in-gear projects like this toxic. Guess some do but many don’t. It’s been a few decades our professors made sure we read and understood George Orwell. No matter your politics it left a life-long impression on your thinking. In the USA the very genesis of our journalism springs from an attempt to influence. Pulitzer was a powerful force in the Democrat Party. Hearst was also a Democrat despite leaning right in his later years. Both used their influence over the public shamelessly.

Roger Ailes gave Fox News the tagline “Fair and Balanced” as a joke on CBS, ABC, and NBC who falsely claimed they were. To get a little balance we had to import an Aussie. Please send more.

This is not, of course, New News. I covered this story last June in “A National Narrative for Media on Climate Change” .

The news cabal’s war cry is “Every Story a Climate Change Story”.

The movement is “Journalism from Bizarro World” — where every news story is a anything goes opinion piece no longer concerned with facts and never ever presented a well-rounded view of the news.

“Advocacy-style journalism” isn’t journalism. It’s propaganda.

This people are totally delusional. I bet that if you ask any of them if they’re “independent”, they’d all answer “yes” in complete unison.

Today is April 17th. It has been snowing all morning in Chicago. We are getting about one to three inches of snow. As I am writing this and looking out my window I see that my backyard is covered with snow. Snow in mid-April. And it isn’t an isolated event. It has been a cold late spring.

What is the matter with people that they are blind to reality? The so-called experts have been predicting global warming for thirty plus years now. If they were right we ought to be toast by now. And if you bring up that we shouldn’t be getting snow in mid-April if global warming were real and that Spring should be arriving earlier not later if global warming were real, they always make a lame excuse. Like “maybe it’s not happening where you live but there’s a place down the road where no one ever goes and where the unicorns frolic where it is really getting warmer.” Or they say “ignore what you are seeing in real life, the Great God Science says it is happening and what are a Science denier?” Now I’m not unscientific and I like the place where unicorns frolic as much as the next guy, but hey, I SEE SNOW OUT MY WINDOW.

Because the people of the world need another crisis* to worry about? I think the Covid-19 ChiCom Wuhan virus** pandemic has met the demand for that.

* Fake crisis

** Still not convinced the virus is worse than a bad flu season. Completely convinced our lockdowns are designed for maximum destruction of the American economy. Perhaps that wasn’t the intent of our questionable government bureaucrats when they advised lockdowns, but that’s what the Democrats are turning it into.

Mortal peril has a way of refocusing most human minds on essential priorities, as the Wuhan virus clearly demonstrates. The nebulously termed ‘Climate Change’ is not one of our priorities. Not even close. The accumulating lint in the dryer vent hose presents a greater real peril (fire) to a human than our ever changing, non-alarming, naturally changing climates. If you’re ‘locked down’ at home anyway, consider adding cleaning the clothes dryer exhaust hose and vent to your ‘To Do’ list.

The media could combine COVID-19 and climate change™ by ‘covering’ the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression (IMF) and its effect on the trend in the atmospheric CO2 concentration.
For instance on March 18 it was 414 ppm and on April 17 it was 417 ppm.

From the article: “Hundreds of media outlets, including Reuters, are partnering with a project seeking to devote a week of coverage to climate change amid a pandemic that has killed more than 140,00 people worldwide.”

That ought to go over well with the public. Here they are, already stressed out over the Wuhan virus, and then the propaganda machine formerly known as the news media, wants to stress them out even more over a fake human-caused climate change crisis. They are doing psychological harm to a lot of people.

This begins with an understanding of where we are now … mixing ‘liberal ideas’ with ‘ideas from the left’ is hard to get away from … here’s the best separation of those two that I’ve found: https://www.prageru.com/video/left-or-liberal/ in the end is the media “liberal’ or ‘leftist’ as that will really make a difference on how to approach a solution.
