Monday Mirthiness – Tweet of the Year

Based on the stories we cover here at WUWT, this has got to be the “tweet of the year” if not the decade.

It’s like a Josh cartoon, and you can visualize the figures behind the zingers. Enjoy.

It greatly amuses me that those who accuse Trump of having his own version of reality going on in his head, equally have THEIR own versions of reality going on in their heads.

It’s no wonder we in the everyday world bemoan what media, politicians, academics, bureaucrats and “influencers” (whatever they are) come out with every day to demonstrate their eye-rolling stupidity.

– Still mistake Michael Mann for a scientist.

– Are okay with Billionaire Bloomberg buying State Attorney Generals to be his lackeys.

– Assert the IPCC agenda is about climate science.

– Believe atmospheric CO2 is pollution, but if diluted 10-fold don’t know that we’d all be dead.

– Think academic scientists are always pure of motive and conclusions when grants and tenure that make or break their career are on the line.

– Believe if enough money is given to the UN that global weather in 80 years will be “better.”

academic scientists

Some are scientists but many academic types are simply responding to “Request For Proposals” (RFP) put out by funding agencies, mostly government agencies such as the National Science Foundation. So the true culprits are/were folks like John Kerry and Al Gore that influence the peopling of those agencies.

Boris Johnson went to the hospital on about the tenth day of his infection. The pattern seemed to be in the past that the Wuhan virus disease untreated progressed for about 10 days and then the person either started feeling better, or got much worse. It looks like Boris got much worse.

Trump said tonight he is sending some special help for Boris Johnson, in the form of new treatments that might be of use to him. No real details were provided.

Bill Gates and crew have spent much time on issues such as this virus thing. You can search it up. I suspect he knows more about these issues than my current doctor – who is not a doctor either. She is very smart and medically trained, and I (mostly) listen to her.
So while I appreciate the “zingers”, Bill Gates is in a class that Al Gore and Bill Nye will never achieve.

Also, first intro to PinkAboutit. Nice. Thanks.

Sadly Bill Gates has also wasted a huge amount of money in pursuit of his philanthropy. In 2016 he delivered the Nelson Mandela Lecture in Mamelodi outside Pretoria. Had he visited the local hospital down the road, he might have been shocked and abandoned his political platitudes and clichés or simply blamed a previous government.

Gates talks to many on his flitting visits and then patronizingly tells them how they can succeed. The problem is that a wrong diagnosis leads to wasteful remedies. He acknowledges economic turmoil in two wealthy African countries but immediately pivots to Ebola and climate change. He does not examine the symptoms – the economic turmoil – and then move on to causes and treatment. Neither Al Gore nor Bill Nye, not even Bill Gates, fools us all.

The thing about Gates wasting money that is rarely pointed out is – it’s his money. He earned it, so it seems to me he can choose to “waste” it on whatever he wants. In America, even rich people are allowed freedom to choose how they spend their money. So if he helps solve a problem, good for him, if it turns out to be a waste – it’s on him to decide what to do next. At least he’s trying to help.

While that is all true and well stated.

I think the point people are trying to make with Bill Gates is his analysis is wrong and whatever good he doing comes an agenda, while at the same time holding up the Las Vegas Neon signs, “Look at me.” I am right because I am rich. He might be right; nothing to do with being rich.

Sure go out there, do whatever “good” you want to do; hopefully it is good. Bill Gates is a private citizen; well I would like for him to be private and quite.

So if Trump isn’t giving medical advice what is he doing when he states:
“HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.”

Or when he says that the US is getting 29 million does of Hydroxychloroqine?

or when he says: “I’ll say it again: What do you have to lose? Take it. I really think they should take it. But it’s their choice.”

All of which taken together sounds a lot like medical advice. Or is the tweet suggesting people should just

There are quite a few medical experts who have tried this treatment and it seems to work.
It is also known drugs so the risk is relatively low. I suspect that Trump got this advice from medicos who say it is worth it based on the evidence so far. Better than anything else we have. So the President talking up medical advice he has received is somehow “giving medical advice”. If I get this beast, in Oz, i will be trying very hard to get treated with these drugs, which we are giving to all our front line doctors and nurses in a 4 months trial.

So, these drugs are for treating malaria. Malaria is an infection by parasites. It can simply have no efficacy for treating a virus or a bacteria.
The best hope is that a treatment can be fashioned by using antibodies created by survivors, and then a vaccine can be developed to protect us from it. Just like smallpox, this disease also has to be eradicated, or everyone that has never caught it will.

JS:
Both drugs have anti-inflammatory effects that might lessen the lung damage COVID causes in severe cases. Hydroxychlorquine affects something called a ACE-receptor that the COVID virus seems to use to enter a cell, thus making it harder for the virus to infect cells. Both have long track records of usage thus their side effects are well known, and relatively mild.
That said, Pres. Trump should not be touting any specific treatment and just let the doctors answer those questions.
As to eradication: coronavirus is likely a zoonotic disease which means it has non-human hosts. You will never eradicate something that lives out in nature unless you can vacinate every last creature that could possibly harbor it. Not possible.

In October 2004, a group of Belgian researchers published a report, stating that chloroquine acts as an effective inhibitor of the replication of the SARS-CoV virus. In vitro, that is… It was never tested on humans.
Now, in January 2020, Chinese medical researchers stated that exploratory research into chloroquine seemed to have “fairly good inhibitory effects” on the SARS-CoV-2 virus (in vivo). It is used as an experimental treatment.

The drug works on the pH of the cell. The corona virus is a pH dependent RNA virus. It simple alters the pH so the virus either can not replicate or it slows the rate of replication. Smallpox is a DNA virus, much easier to make a vaccine against this type of virus. DNA viruses do not mutate quickly or at all. RNA viruses mutate more so even though this particular virus is large~31kb which has been shown to mutate at a far slower rate than smaller ones.

Re : John Shotsky

A completely RIDICULOUS comment from someone who clearly knows nothing about the subject. The fact that chloroquine and its relatives are anti-malarials is IRRELEVANT to their potential application in the treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Many common drugs have multiple actions at the cellular level and their effects may be beneficial on several front due to effects quite distinct from their main therapeutic activity against one pathogen or another. So, your claim that because chloroquine is primarily an anti-malarial it can’t be used to treat a viral infection like SARS-CoV-2 is fatuous and shows you have no understanding of the topic at all.

Chloroquine is effective against several diseases and is known to possess antiviral activity. Thus, chloroquine is known to be an ionophore……an agent that has affinity for certain ions and provides them with access to the intracellular space by helping them traverse the cell membrane. This effect is unrelated to the anti-malarial effect of the drug but it does provide a potential mechanism for antiviral activity. There have been several trials already of the drug used in combination with other agents like azithromycin and zinc and the drug (or combinations) is being prescribed to many patients by doctors in many countries at the moment to treat the Covid-19 illness so, no doubt, results of such administration will emerge in the coming weeks.

It should also be noted that these drugs are dirt-cheap and have been used for a long time so their toxicity profile is very well understood. Bottom line: The US President was providing sensible preliminary commentary on a potentially-effective drug regimen that is widely available and cheap with minimal side effects.

BTW, I have a degree in pharmacology so I have significantly more idea about this topic than you obviously do. Like many others who use this site, I could send you several references for your edification but you should check the facts BEFORE spouting off a bunch of vindictive nonsense. Thanks!

Given the operation of Hydroxychloroqine is not well understood there are reasons to believe that it is effective at opening a gateway at the cellular level for zinc to enter the body’s cells.
Zinc is toxic to this virus because when it gets into a cell it will deactivate the viruses ability to replicate.

John Shotsky, I admire your misplaced certitude. Hydroxychloroquine is a malaria medicine, but by careful observation by doctors also developed its use as a rheumatoid arthritis medicine: it happens quite frequently in medicine that one substance has properties in another field. Ornithinine cyclase inhibitors are anti parasitic, but they also stop the growth of unsightly facial hair in women… and it goes on. The fact that hydroxychloroquine can be packaged by white blood cells and secreted to attack invading infectious entities is known. It is a disruptor of RNA, so it is one of the substances that knowledgable scientists would go to first. That’s why doctors spend six years in preclinical sciences then do clinicals. Singulair is an anti asthma drug which has promise in reducing pneumonia. Conversely, steroids prolong the infection in Covid. I am not disputing that convalescent plasma has a place, but the cost and difficulty of administering it is significantly greater that a couple of pills a day.

so it took 2 a day 200mg tabs for just 22days straight to give me oedema and bluehaze around everything i looked at, that resolved- but the tinnitus never went away;-(
and did stuff all for my severe RA thay gave it to me for.
so obviously some people manage it for longer periods ok
some like me dont
but for a early dose and maybe 10 days or so?
it would be worth it for most.
once accumulated its a 56day washout period so it would still have some mild effect for a while.
personally Im going to be taikng the Ivermectin as far safer and giving around 6mths coverage(maybe)
with the advantage as I see it of being able to dose 1ml wait a while then another ml etc
dose for a 50kf person is 2.5ml

news out about people have severe clotting issues that block lungs cause the heart fails and jam up the IV lines in Covid patients now the docs are looking t get anticlot meds ALREADY in use in hositals approved
wtf> if theyd be used for any other serious clotting event in normal admissions like stroke/heartattacks then why wait to be asking for dispensation at all?
