Tonight is EarthHour2020. Does anybody give a frick about it? Apparently not when it’s being beaten by silly pictures of cats on Twitter
Tonight at 8:30PM your local time, you’ll be asked to turn off all your lights by the World Wildlife Federation to “save the planet”, or something. Given what people are going through globally right now, I predict participation will be at the lowest level ever. I mean really, who wants to add “sitting in the dark” to their lock-down misery? Read on for a surprise.
Wikipedia says:
The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on a specific day towards the end of March, as a symbol of commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories to raise awareness for energy consumption and effects on the environment.
But here’s something interesting, EarthHour is less popular globally than WUWT by a factor of 6.26 to 1 !!! (A lower number is better.)
And, neither #EarthHour or #EarthHour2020 is trending on Twitter. It’s being beaten by silly pictures of cats #Caturday.
So here’s my message:
TURN ON ALL YOUR LIGHTS! At 8:30PM local time for an hour.
CELEBRATE LIGHT, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS!
And as always, a reminder that every hour in North Korea is “Earth Hour”.
Wow, I had no idea that a significant portion of South Korea was as hot as the Sun !
Or is it an overexposure ? /s
If I’ve got it scaled right, that Seoul sign out in the harbor is way bigger than the Hollywood sign.
If the envirolunies get their way the entire earth would look like North Korea, and be just as pleasant.
Oh dear, N. Korea must be up to its tricks again!
James Hutton’s 1788 work āTheory of the Earthā emphasized the geothermal heat source.
Fourier, denying geothermal, formulated a stupid hypothesis based on glass box experiments.
Climate āscientistsā follow Fourier, a mathematician, who never refuted Hutton.
But it’s all good because it supports alarmism, right?
http://phzoe.com/2020/03/04/dumbest-math-theory-ever/
Never let a mathematician do science.
Are you under the mistaken assumption that repeating nonsense makes it not nonsense?
If you didn’t lack self awareness you’d realize you’re projecting.
The greenhouse effect is indeed nonsense. It only doesn’t appear so because it captured substantial political traction.
Remember, MOST non-engineering scientists are wrong, and we forget their names.
Zoe, I think MarkW was talking about your geothermal “hypothesis”.
Have another go.
She’s a nutcase on greenhouse as well.
You mean Hutton’s hypothesis?
Why do you buy into Fourier’s hypothesis?
A good mathematician can’t be a science crank?
Once again, not even an attempt to defend the nonsense you spew, just an attack on anyone who dares to question you.
Mark, Please explain what of Zoe’s work was nonsense. Don’t just call it nonsense.
The thermodynamic laws are very important in discussion of so-called greenhouse effect, and geothermal activity is an oh so important and major factor. Don’t dismiss another’s thoughts because they don’t agree with yours, let’s keep open minds.
How dumb do you have to be not realize that my whole blog defends my position. My critics are simply imbeciles who keep repeating the same stupid arguments that I’ve already debunked. If you can’t see that, you’re an imbecile too.
Your belief in a stupid zig zag preventing cooling therefore heating rhetoric is hilarious.
You are the nutcase, you are just too stupid to see that.
The greenhouse theory IS correct, but of course the major player is water vapor,
On the other hand, Earth’s internal heat CAN have major climatic effects.

“The greenhouse theory IS correct”
According to what experiment(s)?
No convection blocking, please.
“Earth Hour” is ass-backwards virtue signalling. If these people were serious, the world’s monuments would already be dark all 365 days of the year except for an hour to remind us of what life was like before the watermelons shut down freedom.
National Guard to support Springfield Police Department amid COVID-19
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) ā Springfield city officials are bringing in the National Guard to help with COVOD-19 management in the city.
Springfield Mayor Sarno said in a news conference that he requested 75 national guardsmen to support the police department after some officers are out due to various concerns of the coronavirus. Springfield Police Commissioner Clapprood told 22News that the department is down about 20 officers after testing positive for COVIDS-19 and 12 others are waiting for tests.
Clapprood said the other currently off-duty officers have health concerns that make working during COVid-19 challenging are in self-quarantine for coming into contact with someone with COVID-19.
National Guard members will be armed and under the direction of the police commissioner. Capprood says she hopes their appearance will be calming as they help the department fill any help they need during this pandemic.

Sure is a good thing that using the guard for police work is unconstitutional and illegal.
Actually that restriction is on Federal troops, state National Guard can be used for civilian law enforcement, part of the reason they were created. Now if the President does the call up and Federalizes them then they can’t.
OWG:
From Wikipedia: “Militia Act of 1903”
In 1933, an amendment to the National Defense Act of 1916 created a separate reserve component of the United States Army called the National Guard of the United States. Since 1933, all National Guardsmen have been members of both their State National Guard and the National Guard of the United States.[41]
[41] New Jersey Adjutant General, Annual Report, 1933, pages 2-25
The Posse Comitatus Act (1878) outlaws the willful use of any part of the Army or Air Force to execute the law unless expressly authorized by the Constitution or an act of Congress.
Prime example – The “Lincoln County War”. The Commander of Fort Stanton (NM) responded to a plea from Lincoln City for help. He sent troops and a cannon. I never have tripped over a report as to what happened to him – reprimand or relief.
Speaking of the “Posse Comitatus” – California removed that article from the State Statutes last year.
Capprood says she hopes their appearance will be calming ….
Sure, there’s nothing more reassuring than a police state with no accountability for misconduct, is there?
You seeing misconduct? Report it. This is the electronic age and EVERYONE has a video camera and use them constantly.
Turning off “non-essential” electric lights is only common sense frugality. If this “movement” (which smacks heavily of activist astroturf) has been around since 2007, it’s long since seen its day. If ANYONE took this green virtue signalling seriously, society would look like . . . RIGHT NOW!
BTW, enjoying your free 30-day preview of the GND? š
I certainly am! Have been cooking out, driving hither and yon on my daily rounds, doing pretty much what I always do. Going out shooting tomorrow, burn a couple hundred rds in pistol and rifles, just cuz we can. Ain’t America grand!
I will be turning on all lights at 8:30 to celebrate how wonderful reliable electrical power is.
All those lights off the east coast are the fishing fleet. They must have a floating nuke plant anchored out there.
We old folks need to get to bed early, so I’m turning off the lights from 2 pm to 4:30 pm.
And unplugging my flip phone charger and the record player. My transistor radio runs on batteries, so it’s sustainable.
Reliable power … if you can keep it.
I live in Ontario.
The progressives who were just tossed out last year nearly destroyed it with “Green Energy”.
More than doubled our bills.
I always thought that turning off lights was an apt metaphor for the general dimming down of society’s intelligence and knowledge.
Seems like the ideal time to run a self-cleaning oven cycle. š I’m surprised anyone other than the Green Blob gives a hoot about this goofy earth hour idea.
Given the amount of attention it gets each year, you may be right.
Yesterday I ran our oven at 550 F for 20 minutes to burn up a quarter-inch thick puddle of apple pie residue that covered 80% of the bottom of the oven.
A heavy-duty aluminium (note the English!) foil on the bottom of the oven is easier to manage. Just pull out and throw. Just lift the element free (after switching off) and insert, shiny side up.
After attending āEarth Dayā sometime in the 90ās, we realized they are all outright kooks. Now 4/20 to us is about releasing as much life giving CO2 as we can! Big beautiful bonfires to reduce fire hazards near our structures, to give us warmth, and to provide a rally point for discussions regarding the power fossil fuel has given mankind.
Weāre SO thankful for manās ingenuity!
EarthHour is less popular globally than WUWT by a factor of 6.26 to 1 !!! (A lower number is better.)
Any one else having trouble with that statement?
That statement was in introduction to the comparisons where “A lower number is better”.
Yes, internet traffic may or may not have anything to do with popularity but I suspect that more people have heard about Earth Hour.
Any one else having trouble with that statement?
Nope. Why should you?
Indeed, coming first in a race is better than coming second despite the fact that 1 is less than 2.
I have decided to make a sacrifice and turn off all my lights at 12 noon for TWO hours.
Thanks for the heads-up. At 8:30 local tonight I’ll pass gas in their general direction.
There is a reason why nobody is paying attention to earth hour. I am more concerned about our lives being transformed into a gestapo police state all in the name of fighting COVID-19. I now need to carry papers showing my work is essential. And people are not only tolerating it, but allowing it without a fight! If ever I get stopped, I will politely ask the police officer why have we become a police state. Fear — which is based on half-truths and nothing rational — has made people forget about such nonsense as earth hour. Unlike me, fear has made many people more concerned about toilet paper than earth hour. I am just angry.
Here is the point: Look how easy it is to become a police state all because of a little fear. You better believe the leftists are taking notes on how easy it was for people to surrender their rights. Fear of the future has not worked because it cannot be immediately proven. People are not going to surrender their rights based on something like climate change. Guilt has not worked either. The leftists will have to use fear of something clearly evident, even if they have lie and say that the problem is worse than it really is. And it has to be quick so people will not stop and think like what is going on with COVID-19. I keep hoping for a pushback and I get none. Every time I spout provable facts about it, I get shouted down.
Any society who would give up a little liberty for a little security will deserve neither and lose both. — Benjamin Franklin
I am out and about every day, just as I always am. Recovering from a broken humerus and going to phystherapy 2-3 days a week, they are still operating and I am still going. Since I am driving the 20 odd miles one way I do shopping for several of my neighbors who are high risk, this also keeps them off the roads, so its a win-win sorta situation! Monday making the extra 15 mile run to buy non-ethanol gas, 5g for me and 5g each for four other people who only run it in their equipment. Life goes on.
” Fear based on half-truths and nothing rational “…
If you had lived in a real police-state, you’d know the difference.
My point is this was the start into a real police state. And people are allowing it while shouting down those trying to be rational. It is not right that I have to carry papers showing my work is essential, period. Today it is this, what will happen in the future? And why aren’t people stopping the march toward the police state?
Don’t know where you live, the only “papers” I carry are a driver’s license and my carry permit. Sound like a “police state” to you? If so you got a really odd definition of police state.
Queensland is the first state in Australia to close it’s borders 2hotel9. You can only cross the the border for work (those that haven’t shut down) or medical reasons. If you don’t have a pass you can’t cross the border.
The biggest problem is that Government, ad police agencies are going to “like” the extra powers, and controls.
Not all of them but enough to make the transition out of them somewhere between uncomfortable, and dangerous. There is no greater test of the body politic than this.
Have to ask, Sender. Is your user name from the Clancy novel Without Remorse? Re-read that recently while recovering from a broken shoulder.
Aye tis that.
You are the first person in near two decades who made the connection.
I re-read it at least once year. Coincidentally I just re-read it two weeks ago in my local library. The day after the Library closed for the CoVID.
I had noticed you comment before, then I re-read and it popped up. And thanks, doing phystherapy now, still surprised they are still operating with all the other shutdowns going on, they don’t have any respiratory services in the building so they are running day to day, their parent hospital may close them at any point.
P.S. Good luck with the shoulder. Been there.
If you citizens allow this to stand you will no longer be citizens. I read reports from some locales here in US that crack downs on people traveling out of hotspots, NYC metro region being the main one, are ramping up. Not going to be effective if they can not test individuals to ascertain whether or not they actually have Chinese virus. Simply demanding papers is silly, just as it is down there. Until widespread testing with immediate results is available all of this is rather academic, Chinese virus is spreading undetected even with stay at home orders.
“If ever I get stopped, I will politely ask the police officer why have we become a police state.”
I would not advise you doing that. Our current state of affairs is not the officer’s fault or their call. Challenging him or her on it just marks you as a troublemaker and might end up with you going to jail. Instead, be polite, and patient, and more than likely, you will be able to go on about your business. Keep in mind that you are not the only one going through these things. We all need to try to put ourselves in the other guy’s shoes a little bit.
I think this situation is going to resolve itself quickly, so hang in there for a little while longer. In a couple of weeks the situation may be dramatically changed for the better. And I think we will have that in a fast Wuhan virus antigen test, and medicine that clears the Wuhan virus from the body.
Yes, it seems the sheep are easily rounded up.
I like standing at the fence and watching them.
When earth hour started, my neighbours on my street would all turn off their lights. So I responded by turning all of my lights on for that hour, including Christmas lights which were still up. But over the years, participation has steadily gone down as they seemingly got tired of the same old fearmongering. Last year none of them turned out their lights, so I didn’t bother turning mine on.
Damn – most of mine are LEDs and I CBA to run around re-installing incandescents so that With That, Watts Up.
I wasn’t aware of Earth Day today.
Now, alerted il will turn on all my lights ! š
For years I turned on every light and ran my pickup truck in the driveway (lights on) as a counter celebration, But honestly I can’t remember even hearing about it for the past five years. Your post was the only reminder I’ve seen. As I’m currently between trucks, some of my neighbors will have to be “cringed” by a charcoal fire in the BBQ.
I always turned on all my lights to make up the plant food lost by others turning theirs off. But if I hadn’t looked at WUWT just now I wouldn’t have known it was tonight anyway.
And it looks like COP 20 will not happen – maybe COP 21 instead.
I celebrate “Earth Hour ” every day l go to bed at 8:30….
Thanks for the reminder! Lights on and fire built to cook out tonight. And #caturday? That must be what my cat has been on about all day. I thought it was just the thunder storms.
This year we should turn of all those ventilators for an hour. They are a massive drain on energy and release lots of planet destroying CO2.
Plus tens of thousands of humans will die as a result and this can only be good news for Gaia , right?
If you have any relatives or loves on ICU at the moment, please consider getting them to join XR’s “die-in ” tonight at 8pm. This time we are not playing around !! Do the right thing for our planet.
It’s odd, I was just this afternoon talking about something being like that stupid day when we are all supposed to turn the lights . I had no idea it was today.
Gaia must be talking to me !
They literally want to return the world to the dark ages
No doubt the watermelons will be on twatter and farcebook virtue signalling
Because of the covid lockdown I turned all my Christmas lights back on a week ago, my house is pretty festive looking place and will remain so until this craps ends,
May even be enough lights to pick me out from space
Added bonus, they are light sensor controlled, sunset in calgary is 8:04 pm meaning they will all come on right around the start of āearth hourā, and I donāt even have to get out of my chair to make it happen
I luv civilization
Ain’t it grand! And by the by, would you be familiar with a wanker named Quick Dick McDick? He is from up youns way and puts some rather interesting items on youtube from time to time. Check him out whilst sitting in quarantine, think you might like him.
Eeeek! I just looked into the kitchen. The 25-watt incandescent light in the range hood is on. Oh no. Woe is me. What shall I ever do? Shall I get off this stinking treadmill, walk over there to turn it off? Nah.
Yes, I still have a few incandescent light bulbs. They’re soft white lamps, my favorite.
STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY, EVERYBODY!!!!!
Regards,
Bob
Note to self: Don’t forget to turn on the oven light at 8:30PM, when you turn on all the other lamps.
You do the same, BT!
This is the first I’ve heard of Caturday.
And the first I’ve heard of Earth Day for years.
Thanks for the heads-up, Anthony. I’m already planning on hamburgers on the grill for supper (it’s VERY warm here), but I’ll also turn on the oven for an hour, as well as all the lights. š
Normally I’d turn on the car, too, but I’ve run around more than usual the past couple of days and again this morning, so I probably won’t bother. And since I’m planning on reading this evening, I’ll need LOTS of light behind my reading chair for the whole evening. You’re welcome. š
Barbara said, “Iām already planning on hamburgers on the grill for supper…”
Hamburgers????? Wah! The grocery stores for miles around where I live haven’t had ground beef for weeks. Double….skip that….Triple Wah!
Stay safe and healthy,
Bob
No ground beef for weeks.
Where do you live?
Rural America — Kittitas County Washington —
Residents, like elsewhere, have supplies of toilet paper and wipes enough to last through December of 2022. Stores have none.
Nothing else seems to be in short supply.
PS: you need to slowly build a 2 week supply of food, water, medicines.
I’ll bet there will be sales of freezers soon. Grab one.
From the beef we had butchered last spring we still have 40-50lbs of ground beef, plus various roasts, steak cuts, several pounds of cubed beef for stew and soup and kabobs. Add to that the 1/2 pig that will be ready to pickup tomorrow we are in good shape. And yes, we check with neighbors and friends to see if anyone needs some help. Its a country thang.
I break for #DogDays.
Release the carbon! #EarthLife
I recommend celebrating ‘Earth Day’ with distilled amber beverages, sipped ’round a roaring fire. If we really want to stir the genetic primal spirits of our ancestors, there are few better ways than subdued conversation and extended contemplation of piled embers, while savoring your favorite variation of a mellow whiskey. In the spirit of this moment, I’ll be enjoying a bit of Old Forester I think, a Kentucky bourbon continuously bottled and distributed since 1870. Here’s hoping the Great NorthWet isn’t brewing up and decanting a rain deluge this eve, to dampen ‘the plan’.
If your concerned about this leading to insufficient ‘social distancing’, think of it as generously applying a gastronomically preferred version of ‘Wuhan sanitizer’ to lips, gums, and throat, before any close encounters of the friendly kind might occur. Stay happy out there, Y’all!

Don’t be Green, or green, go green.
Got this notification just in time. It’s 2015 here in the UK right now. Just enough time for me to go and switch on every light and electrical appliance I have. I’ll run them all for 10 minutes, starting at 2030 local time.

UK – in the middle of ER’s great response (/sarc)
https://gridwatch.co.uk/
Well, well..
Looking back (now) at the data from the post above –
Taking into account it is a Saturday, the UK seems to be moving along with no dip at all.
In fact it is now (22:15) running at a higher level than yesterday.
Other things observed –
1) Brilliant sunshine all day yesterday – solar very high for the time of year.
2)Strong cold NE winds with cloud developed during the day today so more wind power is finally being generated.
3)Load stabilization is being achieved by imports from France and the Netherlands.
Did someone mistime? There was a sudden drop off of power used at about 1700 today! (/sarc).
Wish I had read this earlier , its been and gone. I would of turned on some outside lights, ah well next year.
That made me laugh…I totally forgot about it too! I usually turn on every light and machine I can think of…rats! More important things to think about, like ‘phoning friends and family in the UK to check how they are.
‘Caturday’?! Ye gods!
Here’s a question, since all the climate cultists are yammering about the reduced “carbon footprint” right now: what happens when there is no change in temperature, despite the reduction of CO2? Won’t that rather destroy their Narrative about the control knob being CO2?
And, yeah, some have figured this out, hence why they are trying to nullify what’s going on.
They have that covered. The heat goes and hides in the ocean and then comes back with a vengeance heating the air which then heats the ocean which goes and hides and then comes back…and so on. The science in our models is settled, Trenberth said so.
Earth Hour is just starting where I am. I may turn on a couple of green incandescent lightbulbs. That would confuse the greenies, wouldn’t it?
I forgot all about the Power Hour this year. If I had been at some woke idiot would have sent round an email about it. At least at the time I had a nice coal and wood fire going as the UK is cold at the moment with easterly and now northerly winds.
Earth hour? Do people still bother with that idiocy? I missed it completely. As always.
Earth-hour — I not only don’t give a frick, I don’t give a frack either. So, I don’t give a Frick & frack. š
Hey! Cat pics & videos are entertaining — I got some of my own.
To do my part I turned on my old Shortwave Receiver (National NC-173) that’s loaded with tubes and basked in the warm glow it produces when the top cover open.
I take zero direction from The World Wildlife Federation.
Oh Dear! I didnt even know it was Earth Hour day, and left all the house lights on when we went out. Nobody here cares.
Gosh, was I supposed to turn off my lights last Sunday. I didn’t notice that it was something I was supposed to do. Will I go to jail?
