At #AGU19 Fall Meeting today

Thanks to the generous donations of WUWT readers, I’m attending the AGU Fall meeting in San Francisco today. I arrived late yesterday due to some travel delays. The meeting runs all week.

The best converter to climate skeptics ever, Michael Mann, is having not one but TWO sessions this week, I hope to attend at least one.

There’s this official keynote address:

https://www.agu.org/Fall-Meeting/Events/AGUgo-U33C

And then there’s this sure to be filled with wailing and gnashing of teeth event. I say that because the biologists seem to get the most emotional about climate and Mann sure knows how to stoke those fires:

Join us for an important and timely panel discussion hosted by the Center for Biological Diversity and The 11th Hour Project on exposing the fossil fuel industryā€™s shifting tactics to block a just and equitable transition off dirty fossil fuel production.

The conversation will feature renowned climate scientist Mike Mann, community organizer Andres Soto, and investigative journalist and author Antonia Juhasz. The panel will be moderated by climate attorney Kassie Siegel and followed by a mixer with food and drinks.

Hopefully, I’ll also find some real science to report on while I’m here.

Anthony, how can handle listening to their regurgitated B.S. and still keep your sanity ?

The Childrenā€™s Creativity Museum is an appropriate venue for that second event.

That would be Trump’s former science advisor, Will Happer in a reply to Breitbart news at a Heartland Institute conference in Madrid:
Happer said:
ā€œIā€™d have people come into my office in Washington once a week and tell me about the work they were doing. We were spending the taxpayersā€™ money and had a big budget ā€” $3.5 billion ā€” which was worth a lot back then. Most of them were very happy to tell a bureaucrat what they were doing. They were surprised and flattered to be invited. But the exception was people in climate, who were always very defensive. ā€˜Why do you want me to come to Washington?ā€™ theyā€™d say. ā€˜We work for Mister Gore.ā€™
Thatā€™s when I began to realise that there was something funny about this area of science [ā€¦] They would show up. But it would be very painful seminars, not like normal seminars. We were supporting the Human Genome Project and those scientists couldnā€™t wait to come to Washington and tell me about the latest gene sequencing machine and how well it was doing and how cheap it was. It would be the same with the high energy physicists in their search for the top quark and how close they had come. I wondered: ā€˜Why donā€™t the climate scientists feel the same way?’ā€

‘Protecting Our Climate Money Cash Flow for the Next 100 Years’ will be well attended.

I am assuming Dr Mann lives in SF and was able to walk to the venue from his home as he wouldn’t want to be accused of carbon hypocrisy would he?

Not one person at this meeting is going to even mention that all of the increase in CO2 has come from the IPCC policy of China and the developing world get to increase their emissions

Having just spent the day on the canal in sheeting rain and a howling gale with boatloads of special-needs children meeting a gentleman in a red suit I thoght I would catch up with WUWT while drying out and warming up.
I clicked on the first link in the first sentence above and on scrolling down came to “Search science from past meetings”. I clicked on the purple button and on scrolling down that page clicked on “Global Environmental Change”.
Gold!
I clicked on “The emotional toll on Climate Change Science Professionals”. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
I would love to know what Susan C. from Victoria BC and Peter R. from Queensland think of that paper.

Commenters on JoNova’s site had meetings in various parts of Australia last week. One of the attendees I met was a teacher who followed the blog but did not comment for fear of being identified, which could be career limiting.

The venues in the large cities were not divulged publicly for fear of unwanted interference.

I expect many climate skeptics are the new closet dwellers. Very careful about who knows their views.

I admire Craig Kelly MP because he has managed to remain an elected representative in Australia despite being a vocal climate skeptic.

Good luck, Anthony. I remember when AGU was an actual good scientific institution, now they are Tarot Card Readers at best. So, Channel your inner David Middleton and let them have it! I will stock up on beer and chips and wait for your reports.

Anthony, have fun.

Will you be sitting front row center for the Mann presentations?

Regards,
Bob

What is with all these ‘conversations’. I thought this was a scientific conferences with seminars and poster sessions. This sound more like a bitch session, where a bunch of backscratching same-thinkers get together to dish dirt on people they don’t like. It’s kind of unseemly that this happening at a science conference.

When I drove into SF coupla years ago, our hotel warned us about homeless vagrants living in the ground floor car park. Sure enough. Nice cheerful people but then I ā€˜m a Brit and they liked that. Any better now?

Coeur
Even in the early-’80s, shortly after it was built, the Moscone Convention Center stair wells, going down to the parking garage, would smell of human urine. I don’t imagine that things have improved since then!

Well, since you certainly won’t find any real science in that session, how about a report on the food and drinks?

Two sessions is because MM found so much new material out on San Francisco’s sidewalks.

In spite of the difficulties, Anthony, have a great time!
