A British yacht skipper’s flight to the US to help Greta Thunberg sail to Portugal has produced the same amount of carbon emissions the voyage hoped to save.

Nikki Henderson, 26, flew to the US from Britain to sail 48-foot catamaran the La Vagabonde.

The vessel is carrying Miss Thunberg and her father Svante 3,000 miles to Portugal where she will go onto attend the COP 25 climate change talks in Madrid.

The journey was meant to save approximately two or three tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

But Ms Henderson’s flight from Britain to the US likely produced the same amount of emissions the journey hoped to save, countering Ms Thunberg’s mission, The Times reports.

Ms Henderson was a skipper in three ARC Trans Atlantic races. In two of them, she was the youngest competitor.

She also skippered the Caribbean 600 and has raced in three Caribbean seasons.

Ms Henderson tweeted: ‘I decided to help @Sailing_LaVaga and support Greta because she is changing the world – simply by standing up for what she believes is right and staying true to her values.

‘I so admire that, and hope to draw strength from her.’

The 16-year-old climate activist, who became world famous for founding the ‘school strikes for the climate,’ refuses to fly in planes because of the carbon footprint.

The ship, belonging to Australian YouTubers Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu, left from Hampton, Virginia, last month.

The couple also have their son Lenny onboard.

It aims to reach Portugal, more than 5,500 kilometers (about 3,500 miles) away. From there Ms Thunberg will make her way to Madrid in Spain for COP 25.

    • Greta will one day learn the lesson that is the most difficult one for someone affected by Asperger’s: that much of what she has been told is not true. When she does it will a massive shock and she will need all the help and support she can get. If not, we may find her in the self-harm or even suicide statistics.

      • You and I both know that…I can’t imagine the vagal feedback on this child. The panic the anxiety of misrepesented data; fight/flight response to all this crap they tell her. Should we blame her — I fight with that dichotomy of conclusions.

Being autistic, I see another side that most won’t see.
A naivete, a deep and profound love of life when it is sweet. a genuine concern for mankind as a whole; the innocence of age and autism which veils the truth of the world. It is like a set of colored glasses. And when the lies are whispered in your ears, well.

Is she to blame — no I wouldn’t say so in light all that authority and expertness that informs such a mind as hers.
It would take a terribly dark night of the soul to impress the truth on her tortured mind —
but that being said, god help those that have cheated her truth.

Life is tough enough without the confusion and fugue emotion of autism also blinding those sensory responses are overburdened already
This beyond a doubt is called a “mate crime”…

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mate_crime

…and mate crimes happpen every day without anyone paying attention to them. Whither it is the grocery clerk who cheats a innocent, or a parent who rides a dysfunctional child to fame and fortune.
I would suggest that we will see a lot more of these types of parents using ‘their’ autistic children to gain wealth and fame.
It is an easy move for the loud, helicopter parent, who will not let their children grow.
Sad really that they have fallen so low.

      • It raises an interesting issue.

Did Greta develop ClimatePhobia at 8-9 years old because of educators in Swedan, her parents, MSM, social media, Doomsters like Gore?

Finding out what triggered the irrational fears could help other children.

        • It’s not irrational if all the information and propaganda you have been fed since birth has brainwashed you into believing that is the case.

It would be irrational if all the information you had available told you there was little danger of GHGs causing significant warming.

Smugly dismissing other peoples ideas as phobic does not advance the situation, even if it makes you feel superior.

She may have tendency to OCD, but that makes her a perfect figurehead for a movement that shows all the hallmarks of a cult and is locked in a collective case of OCD.

It seems only those well over 50 have enough life experience and technical training to see this for what it is.

Time for an Old White Male Rebellion

          • funny , discussing this today and same conclusion a few of the 50ish age range and anyone over that had decent educations science and life experience that pretty much proofs us against the climate scammers
but anyone under 50 the uni socialist products and def all the present kids in any education venues have been brainwashed daily for 20 or more years
no wonder its so hard to get em to listen let alone read/think or debate an alternative world view that very little IS happening at all and none of it is new or unprecedented etc

        • There probably isn’t one single source. Climate catastrophism is everywhere, in all the media and in all schools all the time – in certain countries that is, others not so much. It’s impossible not to be exposed to it. Of course an impressionable child will absorb it.

      • I for one am not buying a word of it.
She demonstrates none of the hallmarks of a person on the spectrum.
She is an adept public speaker.
She has a massive number of appearances and interviews with complete strangers, in which she conducts herself with great aplomb.
She shows a wide range of normal emotional affectation, as appears to have little of the anxiety even a normal and in fact quite precocious teenager would or could be expected to display in such situations. In fact few adults are able to handle public speaking with anything like a normal affect, let alone with confidence and self assured mannerisms.

As far as I can tell, and ignoring any of the words issued forth by her promotional committee, she seems fairly normal and remarkable mostly for being a young woman about to turn 17 (January 3rd) who appears to be a child.
Most teenagers her age, and especially females, are fully grown physically, and go to great lengths to dispel any image or appearances of childishness.
In fact many if not most girls her age could pass for adult women with even a small effort, and many with no effort at all are impossible to tell from a person in their 20s.

The signs and symptoms of Asperger’s are well known and described in detail, and I see none of them in her demeanor, actions, or affect.
I am calling BS on every part of her sob story, just as I call BS on her ability to see CO2 with her eyes, discern the future with her feelings, or to understand complex scientific issues with nothing more than left wing indoctrinational propaganda.

        • Nicholas: The autism spectrum is pretty much a joke. Anyone mildly different, anti-social, etc, can easily be diagnosed as such. The days of autism always being a serious mental illness are long gone—gone with the “spectrum”. There are literally millions of “spectrum” kids and adults that function just fine but someone wanted a label slapped on them for one reason or another. It’s over-diagnosed horribly, much like ADHD. We live in a world where being defective or broken gets you a medal. Greta does smile (when not staring daggers at people), but it’s not terribly natural or spontaneous. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it will get you labelled if someone wants that. As for her activities, I have seen news tapes of autistic kids going to Disney World. It was a “special trip” for autistic kids, but really, in the days before everyone was officially broken, an autistic child would barely be able to leave home, let alone go to Disneyworld. It’s just part of the “we love to be broken” movement out there.

          • I have not spent a ton of time studying her many videos and appearances, but I have watched several of them, and watched carefully, and a few things jumped out at me that many might and I suppose probably did miss.
I have seen her interviewed on live television, in which she is introduced to Arnold Schwarzenegger and other such international heavyweight movie stars and celebrities, Presidents and Prime Ministers, and all manner of personalities. I have seen her flash instantaneous and very appropriate smiles to what were subtle jokes and references. I have seen her answer all sorts of questions, and while not exactly notable for being insightful, she was not tongue tied or even slightly skittish or nervous in such situations, which would make many people freeze up or appear stiff at the very least.
There are thousands of pictures on line and readily searchable in which she is displaying a wide range of happy faces, wry smiles, laughing, and in general not at all the sort of affect that is descried in every piece of literature to be found on how people with such ailments behave and are different.
In fact, the way she behaves out to be flat out impossible for someone with Asperger’s Syndrome. Or autism.
Sure she may have some mild case of one of these I suppose, but then so must everyone. Because as you note, such maladies are only diagnosed on subjective criteria, and anyone can say anything about having such afflictions.
Mental and cognitive health, as a science, is all over the map in terms of credibility, IMO.
There is no one alive that cannot find some mental health “professional” to diagnose them with something or other.
There are none of the sorts of ailments mentioned here that are not so diaphanously defined as to be virtually meaningless in terms of how a person behaves or will be perceived or be able to function.
As a final word, I point to her UN rant given recently, in which she gave her well known “How Dare You” screed. Take a careful look at her face as she reads her lines.
Look especially at how her twisted faces of anger and (I really have to say) outright hate and scorn flash on and off like a flashlight! She looks down at her page of lines, and her expression transforms in an instant to an intent and neutral frown of introspection, then looks back up and delivers her next sentence and the hate face turns right back on again.
I do not know about anyone else, but this to me screams deception.
People who are truly upset cannot and do not switch on and off intensely emotional facial expressions.
            Actors and fakers do that.
            See here.
Look at how she turns on her rage, her faces, and then off again when she looks down for an instant. Look at such moments as time stamp 1:35:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAJsdgTPJpU

As new as she is at this, one could write a book about how transparently fake but thoroughly scripted her act is.

          • The explosion of children being diagnosed with things like autism is down to the number of “experts” and special needs teachers needing continued employment. Nobody is going to turn away another client aka income stream.

        • Ignoring her numerous and frequent public speeches, find and show a single instance of this highly documented and very famous world traveler in which she is doing anything but smiling happily amidst adoring throngs, varied and sundry adult companions, or stately nature scenes?
She is a transparent fake to anyone paying attention, and all of her supposed anxiety is only apparent by her words in scripted appearance and speeches.

          • I was about to applaud your former insightful comment. One of the reasons I so enjoy WUWT.

Based on Greta’s own words, she fasted – didn’t eat solid food for 2 months as a child. Beyond the obvious, a child’s body can’t survive this long without food. It could account for her lack of current physical growth yet can’t be accurate.

I agree, she has handlers and has been media trained.

If being the poster child for ignorance makes her happy, let her enjoy her “15 minutes of fame”.

            Let’s be Civil!

          • Asperger syndrome treatment is meant to reduce obsessive and repetitive routines, anxiety and improve cognitive activities all accompanied with parental training.

          • John—That moment of happiness may be followed by years of depression or suicide when the attention is lost. If her behavior is/was attention-seeking (it very much resembles that, though it’s impossible to tell from reading news reports, especially when they want you to be sympathetic to the kid), this will be the high point in her life, most likely. From there, she can only go DOWN and that’s not good. Look at how child actors fare. Greta has been made a goddess. How much worse is her fall??

          • John,
Sorry if you do not agree with everything I say.
I often disagree with some or another thing that someone says, even when the vast majority of the things that same person says I agree with wholeheartedly.
The thing about me is, I will not always decide to not say something or disagree with someone just because some may not like to hear it, or some one may be upset I disagreed with them.
I am outspoken, and I can even be wrong, but I do not make stuff up, or lie.
My opinions are usually well considered and always sincerely spoken.
I am also perfectly able and willing to applaud someone for one thing they say, and criticize something else they say, without feeling any sense of contradiction.
That is part of honest dialogue and speaking one’s mind.
I am no expert on Asperger’s in particular, but I have spent years studying psychology, and mental health in general.
I do know how to look up things and then examine evidence with what I hope is a keen and discerning eye, and then reach conclusions based on what I see and believe to be the case rather than on what someone else says or what I might have originally thought.
I looked up what Asperger’s is, and how it manifests, and how people with the condition are different and can be identified.
And I for one do not see it in this particular person.
Although if anyone can show me a definition and some evidence of such behavior in this person I am happy to discuss and change my mind if the evidence warrants that.
Also, on this topic, I hope I said I am not speaking as an expert, but of my perceptions, understanding, and opinions.

          • As for malnutrition…lots of people are poorly nourished, and many young woman suffer from conditions such as anorexia and/or bulimia.
I have a close family member whom I shared ten years with, who grew up with this condition.
She never look like she was a child when she was in high school.

Even people with outright kwashiorkor resume normal development upon receiving proper nutrition again.
She does not appear malnourished, or to have any sort of food issues.
Like I said, I know people who lived through such conditions, and most notable was that they were distinctly uncomfortable with food, period.
Everyone is different, but there is this:
            https://www.unilad.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Greta-thunberg-eating-lunch-fake-picture.jpg

Besides, I mention her youthful appearance only in passing.
It is notable only for being so striking, and so outside of the norm for young woman of her age, who typically are quite anxious to leave childhood behind and be seen as an adult.
This is true of teens in general, in my own admittedly limited experience with literally every single teenager I have even known or known of.

        • Here are a few items at the top of a Bing Search for “Asperger’s Syndrome Symptoms”:
          “Symptoms

          Aggressive behavior
          Repetitive motor patterns
          Poor muscle coordination
          Depressive mood

          Having problems understanding humor
          Inability to perceive gestures
          Lack of social awareness
          Exaggerated facial expressions usage

I actually read up on the subject fairly extensively, not least of all because I have seen zero people question this diagnosis we only have on the say so of people who also tell such whoppers as that she can see CO2, she is an expert on the subjects of climate science, ecology, and economics, and has what ought to be regarded as profound insight into extremely complicated and controversial subjects…despite making speeches which consist almost entirely of statements that are demonstrably untrue, and despite her being a child who rarely goes to school since she was a young teen…virtually a middle school dropout!

          • Even professional psychiatrists are strongly warned never to diagnose anyone on the basis of anything but a personal and detailed examination of the individual patient.
Taking people’s word for something is, IMO, even worse than doing that.

  1. “Has the world gone mad, or are we living in some kind of two dimensional inverted tT axis hologram of a parallel universe ?”
No we don’t live in any kind of parallel universe, and yes. the world has gone mad !

    • Oh, I don’t know. My sister’s theory is that we ripped the time/space continuum in the big earthquake of 2005, entered an alternate reality, and life has been getting odder and odder as a result. She has a point.

      (Do I really need a /sarc tag?)

      • The irony and hypocrisy are consistent. Look at those States and Nations limiting fossil fuels then look at the “Made in China” labels in their retail stores. Their massive carbon dioxide emission is off shore (out of sight and out of mind). Just like Greta, they aren’t taking a holistic look at CO2 emissions – case in point – CO2 emitted during manufacture of the sail boat and CO2 emissions by the crew to orchestrate a lengthy cross-Atlantic trip.

  2. The truth doesn’t matter – only what makes MSM matters. He who controls the MSM can brainwash the many.
    Apologies to George Orwell.

    • They got lucky.
      Their journey is completed.
I suspect it is as least partly due to canny sailing by the person flown in for the purpose of helping make the trip…a noted sailing master from England.
Among other things, this allowed 24/7 sailing due to having at least two seasoned pros on board…the boat owner, and a Ms. Nikki Henderson:
“Nicola Henderson (born 1993) is a British professional yachtswoman. In 2018, she became the youngest ever skipper to lead a team in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race at the age of 25.
Henderson began sailing aged 13. After spending a short period of time with the Sea Cadets, she decided to pursue a career in sailing. Following a season working with “Girls for Sail” (the UK’s only all-female sailing school), Henderson skippered three ARC Trans Atlantic races, twice as youngest skipper in the race. She has raced 3 Caribbean seasons, skippered the Caribbean 600, competed in two editions of the Fastnet Race, and gained further experience teaching and offshore racing in Europe. She was selected as skipper of Visit Seattle in the 2017/2018 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
Two days after her 25th birthday, Henderson skippered Visit Seattle to second place in the 2017/2018 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. She was the youngest skipper in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race history. The same race saw Wendy Tuck become the first woman to win a round the world race.”

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Henderson

Note the owners of La Vagabond are professional you tube stars, famous for being famous, and at the time Greta asked the world for a lift to Spain on a sailboat in November, had plans to fly to Australia for some or another event or occasion.
Ms. Henderson was similarly recruited on short notice for this effort, which by necessity cost many people many times the cost, time, and CO2 production of a single person simply flying from the US to Spain.
I suspect that all of theses people, the La Vagabond Owners and Ms. Henderson, will be presently continuing on to wherever they were or had planned to be prior to this hastily arranged, expensive, dangerous, time consuming, and by no means low carbon dioxide producing publicity stunt.

Although I suppose they may now be taking they opportunity to rake in a huge amount of additional publicity by being feted and toasted as heroes at the COP 25 they were recruited to taxi Greta to, before flying on to other far-flung global destinations.

      • Nicholas, correct me if I’m wrong, please. Sailing on La Vagabond is not carbon free. Isn’t electricity supplied by a diesel generator? Isn’t cooking done on a gas stove?

        Regards,
        Bob

        • Nothing to correct.
Read the rest of my comments if you think I am sticking up for any of these people.
I wrote a whole post, in moderation for now apparently, in which I expended upon the notable hypocrisy of not only this particular crew of publicity hounds and sanctimonious scolds, but a few of the people she intends to meet up with upon arrival in Madrid.
All I said here was, Nikki Henderson is a great sailor known for an amazing ability to sail very fast in all manner of conditions, that they made very good time, were very lucky, and are almost to their destination.
There is no question but that this entire stunt involved many plane trips by many people, cost a ton of money, took a lot of time, is the sort of thing only rich people without regular jobs can even consider doing, and involves deliberate and galling hypocrisy and deception as to the actual effect (on CO2 or anything else except the headlines garnered) and motives.

        • Bob, and I did note in my comment that:
“…this hastily arranged, expensive, dangerous, time consuming, and by no means low carbon dioxide producing publicity stunt.”

          • Nicholas, I didn’t think you were sticking up for them. I was just asking questions of you to confirm my understandings.

            Regards,
            Bob

          • I do know the ship, La Vagabonde, is equipped with two (diesel?) engines and several fuel tanks, and I suppose a generator as well, although I had not been mindful of that…it makes sense they must.
Unless they have upgraded the fuel tanks, my understanding is the engines will not last more than a few tens of hours at most given the tank capacity.
You are of course entirely correct to point out the hypocrisy of a voyage which is supposedly emissions free.
I made a far larger point that such people as climate activists often do have lifestyles that are hugely impactful in terms of the so-called carbon footprint.
All that is fine with me.
            Live and let live.
She eats bananas in Winter, wears artificial (plastic) clothing, travels extensively and as far as I can tell nearly continuously.
All of which is fine with me.
The part that galls and rankles me is when she puts on her holier than thou act, when she scolds the whole world as being irresponsible, when she tells children there is no point to going to school and then proves it by never going herself, when she is put on TV and in every form of media in the world as a paragon despite all of this…and in fact BECAUSE of all of this, and, not least of all, when this world famous kid who garnes huge attention and has millions of youthful social media followers, outrageously advocates for and wears the clothing of and thus glorifies the group called Antifa, which is nothing less than a radically violent group of political extremists and hatemongering terrorists.
I honestly cannot think of one other famous person in the world whom I have seen wearing t-shirts glorifying and identifying with this group.
All in all it is beyond sickening.

        • Bob,
Just wanted to add this update.
I looked up fuel usage for various types of planes and routes and distances, and found references that give detailed info on this.
It seems if one really wants to have a low impact in terms of CO2, you ought to fly and choose the type of plane carefully.
Sailing uses far more fuel that flying.
Some models of a 787 get as much as 100+ miles per gallon on Transatlantic flights.
For the 3587 mile Norfolk to Lisbon trip, that comes to as little as 35 gallons of fuel per seat.
Average for all models on transatlantic routes is listed as about 80 miles per gallon.
It seems that sailboat expended all of the nearly 700 liters of fuel they had in their tanks.
No word on if there was a separate generator and gas for it for electricity.
So, it sure seems like, not even including the people who flew around to accommodate her sailing adventure, her having those people make that trip to get her to Lisbon, all by itself, used far more fuel that if she simply got on a plane.
I am sure the math is even worse than this though…because I doubt a large jetliner uses significantly more fuel with one more small girl on board…but it is for sure than every drop of that 700 liters of diesel, and any other fuel used on the craft, was only used to make this trip to get her there…those people had no plans to sail there except for to get her there.
Add in the extra flights for everyone to get here and there, including Nikki Henderson going to the US to start with, and it is obvious her virtue signaling used hundreds of hundreds of gallons of fuel that never needed to be burned if she just went the way everyone else does.
Imagine if they had trouble, and the Coast Guard would have been dispatched for a rescue mission. Hundreds of times more fuel would have been used for ships and copters and such.
As with most things climate related…it is much worse than we thought!

      • So, once again we’re shown that the Utopia, or Canaan, promised by this CC cult is entirely dependant upon the very aspects of modern life that they seek to deny to the less equal.

        https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6513811/Millennial-couple-quit-jobs-sail-world-reveal-plans-raise-newborn-sea.html

Article from last December on the Whitlum and his squeeze. Interesting inasmuch as it shows that all their high aims are nothing more than posturing. They’re going to have the baby at sea, but belatedly discover that it could be problematic, and so fly from the USA back to Aus, where they can avail themselves of proper medical care. To put it bluntly, they seem like a couple of Bludgers ?

        https://www.famousbirthdays.com/people/riley-whitelum.html

Bit of a skimpy bio on the Whitlum fella. be interesting to know more on his background, whilst working on the rigs is good money, I’d have my doubts that its good enough to put a 48 footer around the oceans of the world ?

  3. How can any sane, rational, informed person think that Greta’s stunt has accomplished anything for it’s stated purpose (i.e., reducing CO2)? The crew of the first boat was flown back to Europe after the first leg of the trip (4 or 5 people), the skipper of this return trip was flown to the US, and the combined effort has taken well over a month to accomplish what could have been accomplished in less than 10 hours if she had flown, without consuming all of the resources consumed in this pointlesseffort. This event will go down in history as one of the most ridiculous virtual signaling efforts ever.

    • Greta could have just hopped a plane…been there already…and it would be the same

…wonder how much CO2 is generated making Dramamine

      • It’s actually worse than that. Remember, this is the return trip. Greta actually started out from Plymouth, UK on August 14th and arrived in New York on August 28th, aboard the racing yacht Malizia II. Several additional crew members flew from Europe to New York to sail the boat back. Before she could embark to Chile for the originally planned site of COP25, the conference was cancelled due to riots and hastily re-scheduled in Madrid.

So now Greta has to get another lift from the high-tech catamaran La Vagabonde to make it back to Portugal and then on to Madrid for the opening of the summit. She departed from Hampton, VA on Nov 13 and arrives/arrived in Portugal Dec 3. All it took to achieve that remarkable carbon-neutral journey was about 30 days exclusive use of several million dollars of high-tech sailboats and air travel for at least four crew members. Forgive me if I fail to understand how this could scale up to save the planet from anything.

So she’s crossed the Atlantic twice with the net effect of traveling from Portsmouth to Madrid, which she could have done by train. Even better, in the time taken for the two Atlantic crossings, she probably could have made the trip by bicycle.

      • There’s not a shred of difference between hers and the virtue signaling of a hard-working graduate student who has just spend a hundred thousand dollars for a degree from one of the prestigious climate science universities in order to hatch a 25 page PHD thesis he’s been brooding over for two years on why fires are more common due to climate change.

No difference. Well, except… I guess she didn’t have to do any of that stuff.

But she road in a boat!

  4. I’m with her. I refuse to do all consumer products-related housework and manual tasks to save the planet. I hope my brave stand will inspire y’all to get busy and help me out here…

  5. So the owner of the boat bombed a milk factory in Romania then fled to Australia

    https://sailing-lavagabonde.com/a-not-so-brief-bio-elay/

He made his money from oil and mines, and now the vile greta was happy to let a person Fly to the usa just so vile greta can shout and cry her normal rubbish in spain 😐

How has vile greta changed the world? Kids do not go to school, she is having the time of her life by going around the western world for free, her parents have probably made millions in the process…

Ms Henderson tweeted: ‘I decided to help @Sailing_LaVaga and support Greta because she is changing the world – simply by standing up for what she believes is right and staying true to her values

      • Yes, Greta is just benefiting from the sale of fear, like so many before her. Whether she understands what she is doing is debatable.

        • Very debatable, and for anyone who only has per public persona to go on, unknowable.
However, she claims to have detailed and insightful knowledge of the most complex system that human beings are aware of, namely the atmosphere of our planet, as well as insightful knowledge of how long term changes to the atmosphere will bear on and effect the entire biosphere over long stretches of time, in addition to being in a position to lecture on the macro and microeconomics of the entire global population, comically and hubristically, on how all of these will interact and shake out during what us morons consider to be the mostly unknowable happenings in the vast and open-ended span of time referred to as” the future”.

          • Yes, the hubris is palpable. It bugs me when they say, “follow the science.”

Ehrlich is out there pedaling the same old sh*t and he thinks he’s been right all along when he could not have been more wrong.

        • I agree Scissor. I believe that her mother is a famous opera singer and her father is an actor. The public arena would be familiar to her and I don’t doubt that she’s been coached. We know that this has all been orchestrated, it wasn’t as simple as a single schoolgirl skipping school to raise awareness of CC.

What 16 year old wouldn’t enjoy the ride she’s been on. I’m with you though, I’m not sure she understands the lie she is living, and I wonder how she’ll fair when she finds out the truth.

She is little more than a marketing tool and a great many are falling for it.

    • I’m unsure if the 5th picture down is a funny, Ha-Ha, “I’m a peasant working in the fields”, but how Photo-shopped is that picture of her in the field? She may have actually done what she claims, about working harvesting grain, but I’m unsure if that picture was meant as a lark or if she is claiming that’s what she did.

Also, the British yacht skipper that flew to captain the yacht from the US to Portugal, was it a commercial flight or was it a private plane? She may have caught a seat on a private plane that was already flying to her destination, and rationalizing that ‘It was going there anyways, so it’s OK’. Years ago, I saw an interview with Ariana Huffington (sp?), the founder of the Huffington Post. The interviewer had her commenting on ‘climate change’ along with other liberal talking points. The interviewer then asked her where she was going to after this interview, she commented on hopping a plane to go to the west coast, from the NYC interview. He pressed on (he knew the answer, he just wanted her to state it), and she finally lamented that it was on a private plane, but she then actually rationalized that the plane was already going there, she was just taking up an empty seat, so it was OK. Just a bit of liberal hypocrisy.

      • “…It was going there anyways, so it’s OK…” applies to all commercial flights including those that Greta could have taken.

    • The owner of the boat’s FATHER bombed a factory in Romania.
Let us be fair and accurate.
No one is responsible for the deeds or actions of another person, even a close relation or family member.

      • As to the above about the father…I could be wrong about that.
That is what I seem to recall about his family.
        I could have misremembered that.

    • “Lets start with my roots. Mum is from Austria, she was a Catholic girl with strict parents and immigrated when she was 16 to Australia. Dad is from Romania, jumped on a flight (fled the country) when he was 20, after him and his friends made a small home made-bomb and blew up a milk factory (no people were inside, just milk). He charmed her with his good looks and ability to make great strawberry milkshakes on a hot summers day. Fifteen or so years later I was born having two older brothers.”

      https://sailing-lavagabonde.com/a-not-so-brief-bio-elay/

26 year old woman, her father is the one from Romania who she says made a bomb and blew up a milk factory.
As far as I can tell, these people are you tube stars by trade, and their schtick is that they sail around the world and do not have jobs.
Giving Greta a lift was no doubt for the publicity and because they could.
They make their living by being famous.
Not a crime, or even particularly ripe for criticism.

      • Reading the bio, I would suggest that somebody with the money had the idea of putting two photogenic bods on a boat to have a punt at making money from Youtube. And if they are getting $2k per episode, then it looks like it has potential ? No doubt being a Greta Taxi will only add to the marketing potential as sadly, not many people will see, or look further beyond the simple facts presented.

So, very much along the same lines as a manufactured pop group. 🙂

        • I have to say, it sounds like great work if you can get it.
I have nothing against the two young adults who own that boat and make a living making you tube videos.
Hard to fault them for garnering a whole bunch of free publicity by taking Greta up on her request for a free sailboat ride to Spain.
It has been said there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Not sure I agree, but I have never been famous.

  6. “I decided to help @Sailing_LaVaga and support Greta because she is changing the world …”

I wonder how will change anything, since the climate gravy train is already going full steam ahead and brimming with hypocrisy, fraud and clownery.

  7. ” has produced the same amount of carbon emissions the voyage hoped to save”

Given that the captain is taller and presumably heavier than Greta, her plane flight probably produced more in the way of CO2 emissions than Greta would have done had she flown the same distance.

  8. A quick google search shows that they have almost reached their destination, and are sailing in 12′ waves. I have checked a few times, and it appears that they were in similar seas most of the trip.

  9. Another critique that reinforces the big lie that carbon dioxide is a threat. It’s a tactic meant to habituate us to it. The whole thing is a farce.

    • Just like the “Russia” narrative, cum “Ukraine” narrative … the LEFT will fabricate whatever LIE necessary to DESTROY the opposition. I guess we’ve completely forgotten the lessons of Goebbels … and that entire business about repeating LIES.

  10. What will she do when she grows up? The world’s attention will fade; her backers will slow up and eventually vanish; the terrible thing might come to pass – a few years of global cooling and a general lack of interest in the climate. “I used to be Greta Thunberg- do you remember me?” She’ll be scarred fo ever.

  11. With the world at a (supposed) climate emergency tipping point, one carbon intensive media stunt with supporting cast travel could tip the planet into unprecedented spiral.

Do I get tenure, grants, and global media coverage for that?

  12. I’m not a fan but the Greta bashing feels wrong.

20 days at sea, they’re about to complete the ~3,500 mile voyage tomorrow. They’re running out of provisions so it’s a just in time moment.

I was surprised they didn’t stop in the Azores to restock. They must have a desalination nit onboard; the Catamaran only carries 110 gallons.

Greta attempts to maintain a low carbon footprint. What other people do isn’t the issue.

However, Greta has suffered from ClimatePhobia since she was 8-9 years old. This is the real story as its apparently becoming more common. GoreBlasters need to tone it down!

    • I agree that ridiculing Greta is unfair, and needs to stop. It’s not her fault she can’t evaluate this on her own, and has been brainwashed into fear.

Likewise, the climate doomsters need to stop exploiting her disability.

      • I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way!

I completely agree, the MSM and Doomsters like Al Gore need to understand what their nonsense is doing to children.

          • yup they NEEDED a kid to lead the kids theyd got indoctrinated , but who found all their climate gurus too old n boring to get all stirred up following
and along comes Greta( via her parents nudges I bet) to go protest and the amazing NON coincidence of the greentard promoter getting a tip to go discover her..
and now the grumpy greta global gullible greentard meme is a “thing”

          • At what point is a young person not a child?
She will be 17 in a few weeks.
            I recall well being 17.
I was getting A’s in physics and chemistry and advanced math in High School.
I learned about nuclear physics and such subjects as particle and astrophysics before I was 10.
She claims to have the expertise to tell the whole world what is what, and override what economists and ecologists and experienced scientists have to say about their fields of expertise…iffen they disagree in any way with her pronouncements that is.
IOW…she claims to be highly intelligent, a superhero (in her own words), and highly knowledgeable.
The people that tell us she has some sort of emotional or developmental issue also tell us she can see CO2, literally. They tell us her words are not to be ignored…she knows what she is talking about.
But we know she speaks nonsense and lies almost exclusively.
So why buy even a single word of her promotion sales pitch?
Seriously…why be so credulous when it is easy to check on what Asperger’s is, even if you never heard of it, and then compare that to what is readily seen in her extensive library of speeches and appearances?

      • Salute!
        Thanks John and Ed.
The poor, ignorant girl has been had by the warmists and maybe will one day see that.
I cannot bring myself to blame her, but hold no bars against those that have manipulated her and others.
        Gums sends…

      • The Warmers are using a child to further their cause. As long as Greta evokes adulation, she will be exploited ;”you should listen to her because she is a child!”. When the reaction is ridicule, they then are upset “what a terrible person you are! Making fun of a child!” As long as we are told we must do as Greta says, she is fair game for mockery. If she doesn’t like it, she can head home, go back to school, and finish high school. This is her choice.

    • Good comment. Yes, they do have a desalination unit. The boat is quite amazing in what it is and what it has done. Too bad it is made of a lot of carbon and relies on fossil fuels to a large extent:)

    • Greta attempts to maintain a low carbon footprint. What other people do isn’t the issue.

When they are doing it on her behalf it is. Greta’s “low carbon footprint” isn’t at all “low carbon” when it involves/requires other people flying all over the world to accommodate her virtue signaling.

      • John,
Rational human beings are not concerned about air travel. We don’t maintain, fuel, nor fly passenger planes.

If a low carbon jet fuel exists at the same price, the airlines will buy it and market the flights as “Green”.

What Greta chooses to do is her concern.

        • Rational human beings are not concerned about air travel

Well at least you realize Greta isn’t rational.

What Greta chooses to do is her concern.

And again, when she’s scolding the world about evils of CO2 and being hailed as an example that everyone else should follow, the fact that her “carbon footprint” of her voyages is huge thanks to the folks flying to and fro to enable her virtual signals just shows the hypocrisy of the scolder and all those who defender her.

          • Hi John,
There’s no question that Greta isn’t rational. I never said she is.

Consider, your perceived notion of what she stands for, as well as perceived notions from the pubic, are contrived and based on media coverage.

She refuses to answer any question related to Climate or Science.

This is the hallmark tactic from Occupy and the current ER nonsense.

My goal, as one who attempts to be a rational thinker, is to freely conceed her right to be foolish. What point is there to bash her silliness?

            Her choices are her own.

            Hopefully, our choices are civil.

          • Her choices are her own.

and? Her choices have *consequences*. One of those consequences is people flying around the world so she doesn’t have to – which totally puts the lie to her “low carbon and/or “carbon free” voyages. Your not-as-rational as you claim concern trolling goal doesn’t change those facts. Sorry if you finds facts to be uncivil. facts don’t care about what you consider civil.

          • John, if she and her ilk ever get their way, the world is in for some very bad times and billions will die.
Loudmouthed Marxism Antifa cheerleaders are never gonna get a free pass from me, personally speaking.
Even the ones who are not media darlings whose every utterance is carried prominently by the entire international press.

    • You are gullible and naïve.
She is a young actress, and the degree to which she believes of means a word of what she says is unknowable to us.
Every word she tweets, every lecture and harangue she delivers, is directly and completely belied by her demeanor, her mannerisms, and her general lifestyle in between her speeches.
Example: She is a teenager living the Life of Riley, sailing around the world and being feted and presented with keys to cities and glad-handing with world famous celebrities, and in between her UN speech last month and her travel back to the EU, she spent several weeks travelling by auto across the continental US and Canada, coast to coast and north to south, and all along the way she published phots of her travels…happy smiling picture after picture in scenic locales, with amazing scenery, bountiful wildlife, picturesque cities and loving crowds…
An amazing adventure anyone in the world would love to be able to engage in.
A huge and expensive and totally voluntary joyride around the world and across multiple continents, and the only time she appears unhappy or upset IN THE SLIGHEST DEGREE is when she is scolding the rest of the world with prepared scripts and contrived messaging.
She expounded upon the beautiful natural scenery, spectacular and abundant wildlife and nature scenery, huge and happy crowds of people with nothing better to do that take the day off when she was in town to have a parade and a happy festival, in which they caroused and gamboled prior to yelling at the world in scolding tones and angry words about the state of the dire emergency they lived through daily!
Upon getting back to the East coast of the US, she made some completely unfounded and unsupported statement about the imaginary crisis she would have us believe in.
After weeks of literal daily photos of her happy and carefree adventure (all documented on her Twitter page for anyone to peruse), she made some inane statement about the horror she was witnessing and the death and misery she experienced on the dying planet she just happily toured by apparently bypassed in favor of the beautiful and pleasant one the rest of us are familiar with.
      Suffering by eye!
      Wake up, naif!
She has you conned and crying in your coffee while she lives the high life and condescends to us from her lofty perch of high minded insight and wisdom.

      • Fascinating activities for someone who has had her childhood and future stripped from her by evil, fossil-fueled prosperity.

        • You got that right.
          Talk is cheap.
As a wise man (or woman) has said, why should anyone take them seriously when they are such hypocrites about their personal lifestyles. We should start thinking about believing they are sincere when they start acting like they sincerely believe the things they say.

          • Me either.
The point is, even if you buy the whole steaming heap, why should anyone change the way they live when the people preaching at everyone to change the way they live, act is if it does not matter how much energy any particular person uses?
It is like listening to a fire and brimstone sermon from an incorrigibly immoral atheist who wants everyone else to repent.

      • Spot on! She is a loathsome disgusting fool. I detest her and her ilk. She is a danger to my life and well being and I will treat her as such.

    • As for her carbon footprint, not including the flights of people that went across the oceans on planes to allow her to sail, her one way trip on La Vagabond Alone used some 700 liters of fuel.
A commercial jetliner flying that same route uses on average about 139 liters of fuel for the same trip.
In order to lessen her carbon footprint, she managed to waste many times the amount that would have been burned if she flew…assuming that a jet flying to Spain from the US actually uses more gas if a little girl is onboard.
Her trip literally used hundreds of gallons that would not have been used had she simply flown!

  13. What Greta and those of her ilk do is to use “carbon shifting”, whereby they transfer (in their minds) the responsibility of their own “carbon emissions” to others. They thus get to both feel good about themselves, as well as virtue signal to their hearts content.

  14. Does this mean that someone has clear observational proof that CO2 causes any measurable heat retention in the real world atmosphere?
At the start of The Great Famine in 1315AD everyone blamed an angry God for the continual rains and cold, with as little proof as blaming CO2.
Climate Change is truly a religion, it is definitely not science.

  15. Leave that kid alone, ignore her just like Jeremy Clarkson suggested, and do not bother children with adult problems and discussions.

    • They can drive on the great Autostrada to Madrid from Lisbon or she can take the train.

Why is it that the only time we ever see her smiling and looking like a happy teen girl is when she is on one of these plastic sailboats?

      • Malarkey.
Her Twitter page (clogged up now with retweets) over the past few months is a one happy smiling adventure after another during her months long trip across oceans and continents.
She is a fake, and her own photos on her twitter page proves it.
She has not got any sort of emotional problem that anyone can discern by her well adjusted and happy appearances in front of all manner of crowds and celebrities and public speaking engagements.
Few teens her age have such fun and happy lives of unending adventure and carefree fame.

    • Lisbon to Madrid is over 9 hours by (overnight) bus as the fastest public transport. There is no rail route. The 625km by road is 5hr20 -7hr 20 according to google: obviously some interesting traffic jams en route potentially. By Tesla it would be rather longer, as recharging stations are few to none, so it’s plug in to a normal socket. 1hr 10 for the flight…

Alternatively if they go around the corner to Huelva (site of Spain’s largest refinery, IIRC), they can catch a train and connect to the high speed line which will have them there in about 4hr 30.

      • IIRC, they were originally hoping to be at Madrid by the 5th.
That should be easy to accomplish at this point.
I did not think they had much chance of getting there anywhere close to so fast, but that was just by doing some quick searches for average transit time while sailing across the Atlantic from West to East.
I think the time of year meant the winds were much faster than when most people make the journey by sailboat, and they got lucky on top of that.
Nikki Henderson is a noted world champion racing via sailboat person.

  16. What St. Greta and her puppet masters propose to “solve” CAGW is as draconian as what Stalin did in Russia and Mao in China. They wish to destroy the economic system that has lifted more out of poverty and chains than ANY OTHER that has ever existed and replace it with the same Communist elite-controlled economy that is responsible with over 100,000,000 DEATHS in the last century alone! Apologizing for St. Greta is as sensible as apologizing for Sméagol luring Frodo into Cirith Ungol and the webs and fangs of Shelob! You may excuse her IGNORANCE and FEAR, but you cannot justify the use of a small, twisted child by the sociopaths who push her out onto the stage where she infects others with them. Anyone who apologizes for her needs to remove their head from the dark, warm, tight space they have placed it and view the world anew.

    • I agree with you completely. She is not in the safety of the Special Ed class or wherever they teach kids with her issues. She is in the real world telling adults that those of us who don’t agree with her are evil and need to have our entire economic system replaced because it is also evil. If she is going to come into the real world and try to sabotage my life and that of my children and grandchildren then I can say anything I want about her. She is a vile little POS who needs to be pushed out of the limelight and into obscurity.

  17. The Greta Effect: Dozens of others have to have to make multiple trans-oceanic flights to ensure you can travel carbon free.

  18. I came to WUWT today after seeing some climate stories on the Real Clear Politics News site.
One was by Greta, which I have not read past the headline, and another by a guy at American Greatness, Thaddeus McCotter, which I have also not started reading yet.
I was thinking about these articles, and Greta’s recent world travels, when I was reading yet another article by Steve McCann in American Thinker, here:
    https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/12/the_inevitable_breakup_of_the_american_left.html

I came to this passage, and felt myself becoming suddenly irate at the BS shenanigans of the Greta’s and Leonardo’s and Lurch’s of the world, most especially the self righteous but transparently hypocritical condescension they force us all to suffer through.

Then I saw this article and saw that it was closely aligned, sentiment-wise, with what I was already fired up about.
I have not read this article or any other comment here either, but I will. I wanted to comment first on what is on my mind w/o reading what anyone else is thinking or saying. I will comment more after doing just that…reading what others are thinking or saying.

All of the people I am thinking of… Greta, Di Caprio, Kerry…have been in the news more than their usual annoying quota in recent days and weeks, and even months.
All have zero qualifications or specific knowledge of the subjects at hand. And yet:
All are accorded a giant megaphone by the international press for their climate activism.

All spew what amounts to hate-based messages which drip with condescension, and reek of an overweening stench of heartfelt but hollow moral and intellectual superiority. And yet:
All have zero actual moral high ground to stand upon though, zero credentials as having any sort of exceptionally insightful intellect, and offer no basis for which anyone should revere them or respect their opinions.

In fact, each of them demonstrate blatant disregard for living lives which even appear to be consistent with the alarmist propaganda they spew.
The type of blatant disregard which is so profound it cannot possibly be explained away as a lack of self awareness or anything like that.
Each of them live daily lives completely at odds with every facet of the global warming alarmist malarkey, completely at odds with the far left anti-capitalist mantras they spew, completely at odds with their crocodile tear-laced oratory for the disadvantaged and downtrodden people of the world…
The breadth and depth of the hypocrisy and supercilious condescension of them and all of the like-minded ilk is literally sickening.

The middle school drop-out haughty scold mentioned in this article can be seen to be a cynical liar, once one knows that in order for her to travel by boat to and froe across the ocean that not just one but several individuals must do exactly what she goes to great lengths to claim she is against and personally ovoid: Her parents, handlers, support staff, and Lord-only-knows how many others behind the scenes of her little side show all travel hither and yon across oceans and continents by the very airplanes she would have her mindless sycophants believe she is against. And she knows it. Her travel plans require it. Her messaging demands it. Her lifestyle and carnival of lies finances it.
On top of that she is as much of a capitalist as anyone, and her massage has more to do with self promotion and self dealing as it does with anything to do with the environment.
Like pretty much the entirety of the hard core leftist leadership, she and her socialist brethren shamelessly enrich themselves which preaching about policies that by definition will destroy economies and impoverish the bulk of civilization.

The other two though, have been at this a lot longer than she, and show her to be a rank novice at all of this.
Those other two, Di Caprio and Kerry, are among the most elite core of that very special brand of hypocrites who espouse live lives of massively conspicuous consumption and wastefulness, with personal carbon footprints the size of an entire large town and massive wealth, while they spend much of their lives scolding the world about even occasionally doing any of the things they do every single day:
They screech about sea level rise while investing untold millions of dollars in coastal real estate; they fly around the world daily on fleets of private jets which declaring that fossil fuel usage is evil and immoral and about to kill us all; and they espouse policies which will impoverish billions, and destroy any prospects for widespread and ongoing prosperity of the people they condescend to, while they amass vast personal fortunes and do little if anything to actually help any single person in need.

These people are disgusting liars, rank hypocrites, and true scoundrels.
One thing we can all be sure of is that whatever they say is very far from what they actually believe or practice, and that their true goals have zero to do with the words that spew so sickeningly from their smarmy self-important mouths.

    • Oops…this passage here:
“During this period, I noticed that the vast majority of the volunteers fell into three categories insofar as their motivation to participate in the movement. The first, and most active, were the hard-core leftists who viewed the blacks as masses foot soldiers and a gullible constituency to be recruited to aid in overturning the government and establishing a socialist Nirvana. The second, and largest faction, were those who viewed African Americans as a population to be pitied, patted on the head and made dependent mascots so these pompous narcissists could wallow in their self-righteousness. The third, and by far the smallest category of activists, were there solely out of respect for the humanity of their fellow citizens by attempting to right the civil and political wrongs perpetrated against them.
My involvement in the movement ended when it became clear that the cause had been hijacked by the radical Left, obliviously aided and abetted by patronizing liberals and their supercilious mindset as both shared one common trait: a disdain for those considered to be inferior.”

      • Interesting points.

Thing is, the whole CC hoopla is in fact a capitalistic enterprise ? Modelled on the scheme that the Church pulled for centuries, whereby those who had concerns, but were unwilling to walk the walk, could assuage their conscience by means of the Indulgence. No doubt the groups mentioned serve as window dressing, but the main thrust is about making money ?

And to be fair it does for a few, seem to be paying off quite nicely. Even at the level of the UN, its almost all about the planets economic losers putting the bite on the winners ? 🙂

        • @Fanakapan No, it’s not capitalism. Capitalism creates wealth through manufacture and trade. Religion and the UN (and the Mafia) create imaginary services (indulgences – the Mafia sells protection) and coerce you to buy them. Coercion is not capitalistic free trade, it is extortion and racketeering.

          • I would agree on the manufacture and trade, but like your moniker, I’m an older guy also.

Sadly its moved on from the days of our youth ? Today the Big Money is made from rent seeking, and passing the manufacture stage on to some guy in an earth floored hut across the globe. 🙁

  19. The boat is currently facing wind going 25 knots the wrong direction and they’re racing the clock to get her there. They don’t really have time to tack back and forth, and their course shows no indication they are. It’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten a shot of the diesel engine hours meter on that catamaran. I’d be willing to bet it’s going to show more hours on arrival than it had when they left.

    • She will miss the first day or two it seems, but they are just offshore, making great time, and heading straight for the port of Lisbon where she can get a fast train or car to Madrid and be there in a day or two.
      Personally I am amazed.
Nikki Henderson is one of the best and most experienced sailing masters in the world, and seems to have chosen a route which made maximum usage of prevailing winds to make excellent headway after first spending a few days sailing south to reach an optimal (in retrospect) location for catching favorable winds the whole way…or as close as can be expected on a trans ocean trip this time of year.
      They did great.

      • Best sailing master, something that I’d have to think comes at a well deserved price ?

Do we know if she is being paid for this assignment ?

        • No word on that, or even if Nikki Henderson flew to the US on her own dime, and ditto for the boat owners.
All of them have to get home now, so add that to the cost.
I suspect someone with very deep pockets is financing all of this.
The Diesel alone for the round trip of the yacht is some 1400 liters or more, plus any gas for the electric generator if any.
Six weeks of food too, for the round trip, and three weeks worth for the people only going one way.
Instead of hopping on any one of the daily flights that are going there anyway.
Many thousands of dollars at the very least, and that is if everyone volunteered their time and no charge for the boat time.
How much would it cost to rent that boat for a trip back and forth?
Sailboat rentals out of Norfolk vary hugely, from a few hundred per 1/4 day to over $16,000 per day.
A 65 foot schooner costs $800 per quarter day to rent.
My guess is if someone wanted to take that trip and have a pro sailor come to drive you, plus two boat owners who are also sailing experts, plus the boat…well over $100 thousand. Just for boat and pilots.

    • They are currently doing 3 knots and behind schedule. Meaning that all the diesel is gone. That is 700L of the stuff. Environmentalism taking a back seat to expediency.

      • I think they are in port, having arrived last evening.
Although their site lists a speed of 1 or 2 knots, the graphic shows them in port, and the last update was midnight GMT, which is some 8 hours or so ahead of the PST (or so I believe) of comments posting here.
Yesterday afternoon they were making strong headway and were less than 100 miles from Lisbon.
Aah, here is a tweet from a few hours ago in port in Lisbon:
        https://twitter.com/GretaThunberg/status/1201843947376656384?s=20

And here, apparently the wind died as they made way for their port, as yesterday they had a fresh wind and were tacking towards Lisbon:

      • If they used 700 liters of fuel, just to get her to Lisbon, and all of those people also had to come to get her, and now must go back to where they were or planned to be prior to giving her a lift, then it seems that the fuel for the boat alone is as much as or more than the per passenger fuel usage for one person to cross the ocean.
Add to that the numerous travels of everyone else involved, and her boat ride was many times more “carbon impactful” than if she just got on a plane, which after all is flying there with or without her.
Par for the course with these people…even their virtue signaling is a pack of lies which accomplishes the opposite of what they loudly proclaim.

  20. When did yachting across the ocean on a large sailboat become a carbon-free endeavour?

How much CO2 is needed for the manufacture of such a craft and many years does one last? And what is needed to maintain it?

    • It’s not only the carbon used in the manufacturing process. Fiberglass itself is a petroleum-based product. As are the synthetic materials used in the sails. And of course every piece of plastic on the boat.

  21. “The journey (3,600 miles) was meant to save approximately two or three tons of carbon dioxide emissions.”

If she was just flying from U.S. North-East to Spain, “two or three tons” is a bit high. Assuming “fact-checking” has any relevance in the world of fantasy…

According to figures from German nonprofit Atmosfair, flying from London to New York and back generates about 986kg of CO2 per passenger.

This would mean a one-way hop across the atlantic might burn enough fuel per person to create about half-a-ton of CO2.

    Another source:

An economy-class return flight from London to New York emits an estimated 0.67 tonnes of CO2 per passenger, according to the calculator from the UN’s civil aviation body, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

    But, a ton here, a ton there… who’s counting?

    • Unlikely that plus or minus one passenger would make any difference to the amount of fuel consumed. Then again a Toyota Prius on a highway with just the driver in it consumes more fuel per km than the average per person in a Boeing 777.

      • Still though, for the sake of a calculation, there has to be an average amount of fuel used for passenger per mile.
I found several references for such info.
Because of the weight of the fuel, it is actually more fuel efficient to stop and refuel above some certain amount of miles, which is obviously different for each type of plane.
There is a Wikipedia page that details fuel efficiency of flying on various routes on various aircraft and various airlines.
For trans-Atlantic routes, it lists the average usage of 80 miles per gallon per passenger.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_economy_in_aircraft

Norfolk to Lisbon is 3587 miles.
        3587/80 = 44.84 gallons.
        44.84 gallons is 169.74 liters.
Not accounting for anything or anyone else, it seems that boat used four times more fuel than simply flying there herself would have used!

        LMAO!

          • The boat used ~185 gallons of fuel, and a flight on a 787 uses as little as 35 gallons per seat for that trip, and about 44 gallons at most.

          • Plus, the plane with one empty seat instead of a skinny girl in that seat likely did not use any less fuel, while the boat trip was only made to get her there.
So none of that 700 liters needed to get used at all.
            4x was lowballing it.

          • Nicholas McGinley December 4, 2019 at 6:31 am
The boat used ~185 gallons of fuel

What evidence do you have that the yacht used that fuel and for what purpose?

          • Nicholas McGinley December 4, 2019 at 6:34 am
Plus, the plane with one empty seat instead of a skinny girl in that seat likely did not use any less fuel, while the boat trip was only made to get her there.

Rather strange logic here, you argue that having Greta on the flight wouldn’t use any more fuel but have claimed that Nikki Henderson fly to the US would use more fuel. Either they both use extra fuel or they don’t, you can’t have it both ways.

So none of that 700 liters needed to get used at all.
The evidence is that none of ‘that 700 liters’ was used at all!

  22. Give Greta some credit. In my view, she is trying to shame the countless thousands who fly to climate conferences, in an irony-free atmosphere which the MSM and others are unaware of. Go Greta!

    • Andrew: How can you shame others by looking like a fool yourself? Greta is about as carbon-free and rational as a lump of coal.

    • On each leg of her sailboat transit, the trip was only possible because several other people flew across the ocean so she could sail across.
We do not even know how many, but it is surely a lot of other people.
And while in the US, she spent the whole time travelling by auto on a journey of many thousands of miles.
      In a borrowed electric car.
Which, in the US, is running on coal, nat gas, nuclear, and a little hydro and solar and wind power at times.
      She is a rank hypocrite.
She lives a life of conspicuous consumption while performing her contrived occupation of scolding people for having a fraction of the impact she and her travelling roadshow of climate doomsday mongers.
She has in a few months done more travelling than the vast majority of people in the world will ever do.
And it is notable she has not shown one scintilla of any direct evidence she has come across in those travels of anything even remotely crisis-like.
She is able to tweet out a request for a sailboat ride to Europe on short notice, and then actually get one.
Give it a try, and see how easily done that is.
      Let us know.
      I’ll be here waiting.

      • Yes, now what would be the cost if each delegate to COP was chauffeured around the country and over the ocean like her? When will the GULLIBLE MEDIA figure it out.
Then we have the GULLIBLE schools who still figure she is a role model.

    • Irony free?
This must be sarcasm, but you need to either leave a tell or give the call sign of such.
Tone of voice does not convey in printed words.

    • **Give Greta some credit**
Why? Someone posted after the Denmark conference that there were 1,000 limos brought in for the delegates? Why was not that person invited to address COP25 or talk to Trudeau, May, and Singh?
No, I find Greta a total hypocrite like the rest, only in a different way. When will she do a day of work to see how the food she eats is produced or she can go with the children and dig for the raw earth minerals to make her cell phone so she can tweet. I just sent a note to a school where the students think she is a model citizen.
I have a better message to give to the delegates about their 1.5 deg limit. Can someone get me there carbon free or whatever.
She gets a ride on a luxury boat. Can all the delegates do that? She has been elevated beyond any reasonable expectations by a GULLIBLE MEDIA and GULLIBLE politicians, just because she is backed by well heeled power seekers. Trudeau brought her in to help his election so she could read her script. By her own admission she knows next to nothing about climate and what to do about it. Of course she is not intelligent enough to figure out that you CANNOT change something that is MOSTLY NATURAL.
One day she MAY figure out she was USED AND ABUSED.

    • Andrew dickens

Really lol she had 5 people fly to bring the first boat back to europe after the original crew had flown back, now another person flew to the usa to bring her to europe… The only person who should be ashamed is greta, who is living her life to the fullest probably on u.n money, which is our tax dollars…

      • And the people who sailed her need to get back to where they were.
The sailboat owners had, prior to making this trip, planned on leaving their boat in port in the US and flying back to Australia for the Holidays, IIRC.
So now they will presumably need to get back to the US for their flights, or need to get back to Lisbon if they leave their ship in that port for the Winter.
And Nikki Henderson needs to get back to England.
I wonder if she will go by carbon neutral train?
Anyone want to lay odds on some other family members of Greta and the rest of that gang flying to Spain to join them?
My guess is that lots of people are constantly flying all over the world to support her show.

  23. It looks like Greta Thunderbird will have to make the final trek from Lison to Madrid on foot to atone for the CO2 emission indiscretion from Ms Henderson’s flight from Britain to skipper Greta across the Atlantic. The pilgrims of olden days could do this but it might make Greta late for the conference. What a shame.

    • Would a Hair Shirt be in order ? Or has she not reached the ‘Troublesome Priest ridding’ level ? 🙂

To be fair, I’d not be surprised if her presence at the conference was to become akin to flatulence in a space suit. Her efforts to be seen donning what amounts to a 21st century Hair Shirt will not have gone unnoticed by the hordes of attendees who will see the even as nothing more than an annual all expenses paid works outing, the very opposite in fact of the show put on by Greta and her handlers.

If history really does repeat, then going by previous iterations, it would not be too fanciful to imagine Greta scolding the very people who may have seen her as an ally ? 🙂

  24. If I were the cynical type, I’d say that sailing across the Atlantic both ways was pure marketing genius for the Greta Brand, as well as for her Alarmist message. But that would be wrong, because she did it out of the purity of her heart. We don’t call her “St. Greta” for nothing.

  25. Just curious here…

Anyone else noticed St Greta’s father is ding all this travel with her but never shows up in pics?

This guy is supposed to be a professional ACTOR – what actor would not be trying for all the publicity he can find?

  26. Greta is the solution.

Learn from Greta, Eva Braun’s great granddaughter. It’s about the no fly list for starters. Use an existing system to help. It’s cheap.

So add all XR, BBC staff to the no fly list, and all those people who believe in her. Ideally when they are abroad. They can try and get home. Same for all these climate conferences in islands in the pacific.

Introduce a new, electric only driving license. Revoke their fossil fuel licenses. If caught in a vehicle that is fossil fuel powered, the vehicle gets crushed. Even if they don’t own it. Including buses. That gets them off the street. They can all drive Teslas.

Of course no gas supply to anywhere they live. Easy to cross reference electoral roles against gas supply. The supply gets cut, plus it drives them off the voting system.

Smart meters. Must be good. We put them on Green only tariffs, with no subsidies. Then when the wind doesn’t blow, the electricity gets cut off.

Why not experiment on willing subjects and we can study the outcomes to see if they are good.

  27. Hypothetical question, can a couple who fund their lifestyle by posting you tube videos, over 250 so far and those videos average say half a million views each, claim to have a low carbon footprint lifestyle? Or should the carbon generated by those views be included in their carbon footprint? This is a question about hypocracy not the pros and cons of carbon accounting.

    • No it’s like software companies that claim they’re going carbon neutral sticking in some LED globes and some solar panels on top of the office tower and buying green power with some carbon credits to make up the difference. The embedded plant food in the office tower office furniture computers etc, along with the working hour share of all the plant food needed to sustain the employees along with the infrastructure to get them to and from the workplace well that’s all ancient history and somebody else’s problem.

Ipso facto the Mike Cannon-Brookes of the world can lecture everyone about becoming plant food neutral and feel good about himself particularly if he drives a Tesla and bungs some solar panels on all the luxury getaways.

    • I do not think those two who own the sailboat are eco warriors.
They are Sun worshippers more like.
Devoted to living a live of carefree fun and adventure.
I think they just gave her a ride because they could and she had issued a public call for a free ride.
It seems likely that after contacting the Greta crew, the decision was quickly made to find a professional sail master, and for Nikki Henderson to fly from England to skipper the boat.
Sailing West to East at this time of year, at that latitude, is not a common or wise undertaking, but for a professional racer, the risk goes way down I am sure.

    • 250 videos making lets say an average of $1000 a pop, to allow for the first ones that made not a lot, rather than the claimed $2000 now ?

This has some serious money making potential. 🙂

  28. Nikki Henderson-

“Whilst it could be misinterpreted this way, this trip was not about telling people what to do, or how to live. It was not about Greta or any of us travelling in the most sustainable way possible. …

This trip was about the bigger mission. It was for us to enable Greta – one of our influencers – our role models – to travel in the way that she felt was most in line with the youth climate movement message: To highlight the need for big structural change to fight the climate emergency. To make the point that there isn’t a sustainable way to travel yet, and there needs to be.
‘Big structural changes’ – no one knows exactly what that will entail. But I think it’s so beautiful that just by choosing to sail across the Atlantic, we demonstrated that it is possible to adopt ‘big structural changes’ into our lives – even if just for three weeks. These changes surely correspond with some of the changes necessary to solve the climate crisis: trusting science, setting aside differences and working together, sacrificing some of life‘s indulgences, surrendering control, compromising, staying optimistic – finding a shared sense of purpose. ”

You don’t know what the big structural changes entail so give up your indulgences and surrender control to the climate crisis emergency managers. Oh and don’t forget to remain optimistic.

  29. I have only just noticed the claim that her father, Svante, is traveling on the boat with her. Anybody know how he got to America to join the boat?
It’s just that at the last jolly climate beano, COP 24, he is recorded as claiming he gave up flying in 2016…_

    • It is claimed that Svante sailed over to the USA with Greta in the first place. Does anybody have any pictures of him in the states with Greta, or at least on the boat…_

      • He is said to be on the boats with her, and it has been asserted that he is the one taking the pictures.
It is for sure he has accompanied his daughter in her travels.
I believe that his presence and influence is purposely kept from attention and even mention, since in fact he is almost surely the architect of her entire message and public persona.
Who thinks she writes all that stuff herself, arranges her own travels, lines up her speaking engagements, etc?
It would be difficult to believe he is not with her.
A minor child on long voyages with adults who are not relatives or acquaintances?
On the first journey, she was the only female on the boat, IIRC.

      • There were pix of her, him, their cameraman, the German skipper and the owner in Pierre Casiraghi’s boat for the E-W crossing.

Yes, all male but the girl.

  30. Imagine the CO2 savings if all the thousands of people who travelled went via multi-million dollar fiberglass sailboats instead of taking a flight.

  31. A Twitterer writing in Spanish noticed that in a picture of Greta Thunberg on her mom’s lap, the pair is sitting on a designer chair, with an even costlier, animal skin-upholstered Eames Lounge Chair in the frame. Both chairs are worth at least thousands of dollars.

    https://twitter.com/iBarbarellah/status/1200898431184769024

A long, multi-lingual thread ensued on Twitter. The Spanish-language Huffpo picked the story up, but it appears not to have been found worthy on the English site.
