Tom Steyer: Climate Change is Scarier than Threats to Democracy

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Billionaire Climate Activist and Democrat Presidential Candidate Tom Steyer has suggested the climate crisis is more frightening than what he perceives as threats to US Democracy.

… Well, let me say this. I know this is going to sound a little strange, kind of: I donā€™t want to be president. But I do want to do things as president. You know, I am running because I thought ā€” until this week, I was the last person to get in. And I got in because I thought, ā€œMy God, no oneā€™s going to tell the truth to the American people. And weā€™re not going to actually deal with the critical issues in front of us, and we have to.ā€ So the two things I can tell you, for sure: one is, if Iā€™m not the Democratic candidate, I will be supporting the Democratic candidate. Full bore. Any one of those people on that stage is a thousand times better than Mr. Trump or any of the Republicans. Really. I believe that, and I will, there is 100% probability that I will be supporting that person as hard as I can. The second thing Iā€™d say is this: if Iā€™m not the Democratic candidate, that doesnā€™t mean we arenā€™t in a climate crisis! We are! Iā€™ve been fighting it for a decade and more! Iā€™m not going to suddenly go, like, ā€œWooo! Hawaii, here I come!ā€ No. And Iā€™m not going o suddenly thing that ā€” look, if you had told me, when I was a kid, that I thought that American democracy was at risk, and it wasnā€™t the scariest thing ever, I would have said, ā€œYouā€™re crazy! Thatā€™s the worst thing I can imagine happening. I canā€™t imagine anything worse than that.ā€ Thatā€™s because I couldnā€™t imagine the climate crisis. But there is no way, having seen what Iā€™ve seen, and talked to the people that Iā€™ve talked to, and seen the cruelty exhibited towards the American people, that Iā€™m going to stop fighting these people. No way! I donā€™t think of myself as a tough person, but I can tell you: I donā€™t like mean people. They donā€™t scare me. And Iā€™m very angry about it. There is a playbook here that is cruel to Americans. Intentionally so. …

One thing you can say about Steyer, he is refreshingly open about his intentions.

Steyer is pure cringe. He must be heavily invested in renewables, and this is just his roadshow to try to protect his investment.

Did anyone see a few days ago the tweet by a market trader who paid a $200 pre-order fee to reserve two of Tesla’s Mad Max trucks ($100/truck), with the stated intent of asking for a refund after an expected spike in truck pre-orders drove the stock price up?

If Stayer is on top when communism hits, he will win big. If he is one of the masses, then he’ll lose 100% of everything he’s worked for and either become a farm hand, or disappear. It’s a risky business advocating for communism, only a few lucky ones win, everyone else loses.

That’s an easy one.

410 minus America = 410 ppm

To be “up-to-date” and current, ..ā€¦.. I maybe shudda said, ā€¦.. “411 ppm”, ā€¦.. because it is the start of the summer season in the SH and thus the “warming” ocean water is outgassing CO2.

Does Steyer know the truth? If he does, he’s just another lying Dem. I’d like to know what he has “seen.”

As I take a break shoveling snow that is very much a thing of the present, my reflection tells me that weather is no different today than it was when I was a child. I had to switch to a smaller shovel because the bigger one I normally use is too heavy. By the time I am finished, there will be piles of snow just as deep as the ones I used to play in as a child, carving out tunnels and making a fort for snowball fights.

Is he even living in the same universe we are? Maybe some parallel universe.

First off, who cares who he has talked to. That is irrelevant and simply anecdotal. What exactly has he seen that has scared him so badly? And isn’t that also just anecdotal? What cruelty exactly is he talking about? Probably something made up in his head based on 15Ā°C of warming.

“……the cruelty exhibited towards the American people…”
Such as?
– lowest total unemployment in decades and record levels for women, the young and minorities?
– across the board tax cuts (only for the rich is a flat lie)?
– Record stock market reflected in 401ks?
– criminal justice reform?

The “cruelty” would manifest itself if the government seriously tried to enact the Green New Deal that Tom supports.

“-criminal justice reform?”
Right on point. Trump’s First Steps Act has done more for bringing justice to minority groups than any SJW or Democrat ever has. But most people have never even heard of it. It doesn’t fit with the MSM’s “Trump is Evil” narrative. They will never admit that anything he has ever done has produced any good.

For those not familiar with the First Steps Act, it is reviewing the sentences of individuals who were handed life sentences for minor non-violent crimes. Google it and you will read some great uplifting stories of families reunited.

According to the left, anytime a group of people who pay 90% of a tax get more than 10% of any tax cut, that’s an unfair giveaway to the rich.

Reply to  MarkW
November 27, 2019 2:10 pm

This never gets old.
(I think it dates back to GW Bush’s proposed “tax cut for The Rich”.)

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like thisā€¦

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, thatā€™s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. ā€œSince you are all such good customers,ā€ he said, ā€œIā€™m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20ā€. Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men ? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybodyā€™s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each manā€™s bill by a higher percentage the poorer he was, to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.

ā€œI only got a dollar out of the $20 saving,ā€ declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,ā€but he got $10!ā€

ā€œYeah, thatā€™s right,ā€ exclaimed the fifth man. ā€œI only saved a dollar too. Itā€™s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!ā€ ā€œThatā€™s true!ā€ shouted the seventh man. ā€œWhy should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!ā€

ā€œWait a minute,ā€ yelled the first four men in unison, ā€œwe didnā€™t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!ā€

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didnā€™t show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didnā€™t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

The Left seems made up of anxious people. Always anxious about something. A while ago it was holes in the “Ozone Layer”, acid rain and even something called “Alar” on apples.
And the main thing is that their anxieties can only be relieved by some plan to force some one else to do something they would not otherwise do.
Thus, ending up with through taxation and regulation “they” can “manage” the temperature of the nearest planet.
And the really scary thing is that those underlying individual anxieties can never be relieved.
Enough already!

How would America fare better, as a dictatorship able to change their economy on a dime (nods to Justin Trudeau), or as a democracy? Funny thing, the admired dictatorship doesn’t seem worried about climate change and seems to be doing well.

I can’t understand the democrats or the liberals. I could never comfortably hold so many contradictory concepts, ideas and goals in my head and still function.

I guess an unbridled lust for power over others straightens that out.

Tom Steyer is mad as a hatter. He’d be pathetic, just another rich, goofy hypochondriac, but unfortunately he has the will to power, has a platform, is undaunted, and utterly lacking in awareness of his own hypocrisy. “The poor have no mansions, nor private jets? Well then, let them huddle in tenements, go nowhere, and subsist on gruel.”

Nor does Steyer bother with arithmetic such as China’s industrial development now leads the world to a level where China emits more CO2 than Anglo-America and the European Union put together. Even if CO2 were the climate’s control knob — which it ISN’T — along with another 2/3rds of the world’s people, China is exempt from the self-flagellating doomsday obsessions of the West.

But no matter – appeasing Gaia is all, if the Mad Hatter insists.

I’ve seen Steyer on TV commercials recently spouting his climate-change lies. He has no chance as a dumbocrap candidate, so I’m not sure what his purpose is, other than following orders shoveling his money to the media & trying to save the climate-crap meme in the coming election.

Jeff, the atmosphere is not a confined space. Those 2 people didn’t die from “Climate Change” or CAGW.
I work everyday with bulk chemicals such as liquid CO2, liquid Cl2 (that is Cl2 gas under pressure. 10 ppm is fatal), 24% fluorosilicic acid, other acids at a similar concentration, 50% sodium hydroxide, ozone … I respect them but I’m not afraid of them. I use the proper personal protective gear and follow the safety guidelines.
I’ve been in a “confined space” where the Cl2 was over 10 ppm (at least that’s where the leak detectors pegged out at). But I was protected.
Most injuries occur when someone either doesn’t respect what they’re dealing with (and so ignores the safety procedures) or is so afraid of it that they do something stupid.

NASA/RSS has measured water vapor (TPW) monthly since Jan, 1988.
Measured water vapor increase trend is higher than the highest possible WV trend from CO2 feedback. This demonstrates WV increase is a driver of temperature change and CO2 is a follower.

Just look at the funding, and $230 million for the Dems over 3 election cycles.

It is democracy that Steyer and other anointed lefty/democrats fear, not climate change. The proles and plebs cannot be allowed to continue to make decisions.

Mr. Steyer, the threat to democracy, comes from your side.

Steyer is living in the CAGW bubble. Ignoring the fact that the science is 100% incorrect.

If you were super rich:

What would concern you more: Climate Change or a Wealth Tax?

The Billionaires are about to run from the Democrat party.

Democrats (socialistic branch) have found out that Democrats and a large portion of the general population (particularly young people who believe the system is rigged and have nothing to lose) supports taking money away from the rich to pay for all the stuff Democrats (socialistic branch) promise.

The logic is the rich are so rich and voters like stuff voters can get (pay off their university loans and/or universal health care for example) with no increase in their taxes.

ā€œLabor Department Chief Economist Betsey Stevenson, and Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moodyā€™s Analytics, wrote that Warren could pay for her program ā€œwithout imposing any new taxes on middle-class families.ā€ā€

Both Bernie and Warren are purposing a wealth tax. A wealth tax is different than an income tax.

A wealth tax is a new proposed tax that applies only to those whose net worth is more than $50 million.

A wealth tax, is a yearly tax on the estimate value of everything that you own (home, yachts, paintings, property, jewelry, and so on . To pay for their wealth tax the super rich will need to sell some of their assets every year.

This is mixture of responses from conservative and Democrat sources.

If Senator Warrenā€™s wealth tax had been in effect since 1982, Warren Buffettā€™s 2018 net worth would have been $14.5 billion, rather than the $88.3 billion it actually was. Jeff Bezos would have had about one-third of his current wealth. Bill Gatesā€™s wealth would have been 81 percent less.

Former IMF Chief Economist Simon Johnson, former Labor Department Chief Economist Betsey Stevenson, and Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moodyā€™s Analytics, wrote that Warren could pay for her program ā€œwithout imposing any new taxes on middle-class families.ā€

ā€œWarrenā€™s tax could cut roughly in half the fortunes of the very wealthy over its first 10 years. The aggressiveness of her plan should not be understated,ā€ he wrote as part of a series of tweets on Tuesday. ā€œAll Americans deserve protection from the tyranny of the majority, including the very rich.ā€

P.S. The Justice Department is about to release a report that shows there was document tampering and an organized conspiracy in multiple government department (including the FBI) to attempt to stop Donald Trump campaign, during the administration of Obama.

Doesn’t everyone actually know yet that all this climate policy heartburn is moot, academic? Take this to the bank: With the new massive unstoppable coal energy development galloping through Asia and Africa where three quarters of humanity dwells, CO2 is going to rise even quicker than before throughout this century.

We are helpless to avoid progressing through this unbridled CO2 experiment. We will learn what the climate sensitivity of CO2 unequivocally is, to several decimal places. We will know the naked cost benefit figures of CO2 emissions. (I’m betting on a Garden of Eden Earth^тŠ¼ of plenty, peace and prosperity for all. Ive hammered on this obvious theme for half a dozen years since the “greening” discovery and the bumper harvests. I have never had these thoughts commented upon. The scientific proofs of sceptics I mainly agree with and they served their purpose well. But they too are now moot in the face of the big experiment and, in a way, keeping the climate sham alive. I think realists should get past this fading historical phase and start talking about the big experiment. Gather data on it. Debate it and make it the new conversation on climateu ).

I always learn a lot (of bad things) about how fragile the system is from Democrats setting new precedence and new interpretation of the Constitution, court loopholes, and institutions. I just don’t want Steyer to be at the head of the new precedence learning experience.

ā€œWell, let me say this. I know this is going to sound a little strange, kind of: I donā€™t want to be president. But I do want to do things as president. ā€

Prime Minister Steyer has a certain ring to it, the first Prime Minister of the U.S.A. Sounds even historic.
Although future historians will surely give precedent to Obama.

But first The Need To Impeach, at any cost, even spelling the end of the Dems. Then Bloomberg could be Ambassador to London, and Schiff could run the District Cabinet instead. Prime Minister Steyer could then do a Churchill and go after Russia. Biden gets his job back as Viceroy of Ukraine. Climate, CO2, what was that all about?

How dare the Founding Fathers separate powers like that! Preposterous, what?

The term Democrats in reference to the current group of candidates is you classic oxymoron with the emphasis on the ā€˜moronā€™ part. The prospect of any one of these Climate Czars getting to power is too horrendous to even think about. Heā€™s right democracy is under threat.

November 26, 2019 11:47 am

Botox faces of aged public figures are unexpressive & make what they say lack the emphasis to their pronunciations. Aged public figures should arrange not to be seen speaking & just have their words come out as if from the etherworld. After all they want to dictate, so they might as well get the satisfaction of playing a divinity; Presidents aren’t all powerfull enough.

I suppose, at least, it is new and refreshing when someone like Tom Steyer comes right out and tells people directly that he is an idiot and wants to rob them, deprive them of their jobs and comforts and waste all their taxes on nonsense.

November 26, 2019 1:57 pm

Steyer doesnā€™t really want to be President.
He wants to own the President.
His campaign is merely a ploy to bypass US campaign finance limits (of $35.K/year/donor) and place several hundred million dollars directly into the Democratsā€™ campaign committees next summer.

Joel,
I think you are spot on. Take a look at his initial flurry of ads: all negative attacks on the president, but nothing about what makes him a good candidate. He wants all the power, but none of the responsibility of being president. He (and others like him) are the real threat to our republic. And they are what I fear most.

“having seen what Iā€™ve seen, and talked to the people that Iā€™ve talked to, and seen the cruelty exhibited towards the American people”
What has he seen, what people has he talked to and what cruelty is he talking about?
The media won’t ask him those questions but where are the business people he associates with? If I was doing business with this guy I would be asking him a few questions.
Over the years and in many conflicts around the world young Americans gave their lives to protect and preserve democracy but now climate change is more important than all that.
Tom Steyer has completely lost the plot.

Interesting that the message is that the only way to save the planet is to vote for him or vote for somebody just like him with the same message.

They insist that if you vote for Trump, the planet will be destroyed.

Great marketing scheme to get votes and have people follow them.

If we don’t do exactly what they say we must do(because they know the secrets to saving the planet-we all die).

Only they have the knowledge and power to control the weather and climate……which ironically, has been the best for life on this greening planet in the last 1,000 years, the last time it was this warm.

The current climate optimum = climate crisis
The greatly beneficial increase in CO2 = carbon pollution

Those 2 facts are settled science just like gravity because they claim that 97% of real climate scientists tell us so.
The debate is over because they can’t waste their time discussing science with a bunch of climate deniers who absurdly, use observations and empirical data when 97% of real climate scientist know that computer simulations of the atmosphere(that have been too warm) based on a speculative theory represented by mathematical equations are infallible and should get 100% of the weighting.

In fact, we should emphasize the most extreme outcomes and then dial those up a notch because the narrative is always “its worse than we thought” even while the reality continues to be never as bad as predicted.

Sadly, we’ve reached a point in the climate wars that facts no longer matter. CAGW adherents are being successfully driven by emotion. Rational discussions don’t matter and don’t happen.

When is the last time you heard a rational argument from a ‘leader’ about the existence of a crisis? I can’t remember it ever having taken place. The entire argument today is how to ‘fix the crisis’.

Once a person has bought the kool aid, they are immune to fact. They won’t do the hard work to understand the complexities. Actually, it’s doubtful they ever had the ability to grasp it, which is why they fall prey to the propaganda to begin with.

“Sadly, weā€™ve reached a point in the climate wars that facts no longer matter”

They never did as I worked out quite some time ago that 97% of people who believe they can change the global climate don’t know the science at all. You’re right it’s an emotional thing only but therein lies the problem for the leaders of the cause. Whenever you call for them to make sacrifices and pay for it personally their rational brain kicks in.

In that respect there’s a massive fallacy of composition problem going on and they simply expect the Gummint takes care of all that and the nasty big polluders. Well that and getting some home solar subsidies, free light bulbs and the like is fine of course. Just don’t ask them to pay for anything up front and patently obvious to them as it all has to be hidden costs.

Furthermore the prescriptions with solar wind plus electrifying or hydrogenating transport won’t ever cut it and when they don’t and the lights go out look out leadership then. We just have to be stoic and wait for the inevitable. You don’t like to see a train wreck coming but if it’s emotion they want they’ll certainly get a big dose of it then.
