Psychologists meeting at the International Summit on Psychology and Global Health event in Lisbon have decided to do everything possible to promote behaviours which help address the climate crisis.
Proclamation
“We, representatives of national and international psychological organizations in attendance at the Lisbon Inaugural International Summit on Psychology’s Contributions to Global Health, are committed to ongoing collaboration in the application of psychological science to jointly advance progress on critical global issues, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Our commitment of professional, scientific, educational, cultural, and applied resources will be directed to advancing those issues and Goals for which psychology offers the greatest contribution.
Our initial efforts will be focused on Sustainable Development Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
Our mutual work on applications of psychological science to climate change will also provide a framework and model for future collaboration focused on proposals to address critical global issues”.
DRAFT RESOLUTION
“WHEREAS there is overwhelming agreement among climate scientists that climate crisis poses a serious global threat, is occurring faster than previously anticipated, and is caused in part by human behavior;
WHEREAS the resistance of some individuals worldwide to accept evidence of climate crisis reflects a variety of psychological, social, economic, and political factors, including misunderstanding the relevant science; psychological threats of departing from the consensus view of one’s peer-group; deliberate exposure to misinformation; and concerns about financial losses stemming from addressing climate crisis;
WHEREAS current research and public communication on the impact of climate crisis have often emphasized the major physical damage caused by extreme weather, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, and wildfires, and insufficiently addressed the increased displacement, migration, and conflict affecting those populations involved;
WHEREAS climate crisis has a disproportionate impact on already vulnerable groups with fewer resources, including low-income individuals or those who live in rural areas, people of color, women, children, older adults, and individuals with disabilities;
WHEREAS research shows that climate change-related events can result in major acute and chronic adverse mental health outcomes, including stress, trauma, and shock; post-traumatic stress disorder and other forms of anxiety; depression; and substance use disorder, which have been a secondary consideration in climate change communication and action;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that our psychology organizations will advocate for and support international and cross-disciplinary collaboration to mitigate and facilitate adaptation to climate crisis.
We will inform our respective members and the public about climate crisis, emphasizing scientific research and consensus on its causes and short- and long-term harms, and the need for immediate personal and societal action;
We will encourage our members and other mental health leaders to be vocal advocates concerning the necessary preparatory and responsive adaptations to climate crisis and to invest more in research and practice is this area;
We will advocate for Universities and other entities could include formation on societal challenges and, particularly, climate crisis for psychologists and other mental health professionals;
We will increase the availability of services and supportive interventions to help minimize harm to mental health and well-being, especially among vulnerable populations, and increase community resilience;
We will advocate for the rights of those most susceptible to the negative health, and mainly, mental health impacts of climate crisis, for example, by encouraging policymakers to fully fund programs to aid those who suffer harm from severe climate crisis-related events;
We will support the development of a public awareness campaign to encourage individuals and communities to adopt behaviors to help prepare for and recover from gradual climate change and acute climate crisis events;
We will encourage governmental, educational, health, and corporate leaders to use more psychological science in police designs as well as to adopt norms, values, and policy to promote sustainable preventive and corrective behaviors in individuals, groups and communities“.

I hope this proclamation is just empty words, because it is horrifying to consider the possibility a distressed person seeking help from a psychology professional might have their trust abused by a climate fanatic.

My Psych 101 prof agreed that the field attracted people who needed it. He said that as they learn more about it (and themselves), they generally dropped out.
That was true once, but not now. Recently, schools with Psych Depts removed the former requirement for 20 (sometimes more) hours of therapy to receive a degree. The required therapy hours have been gradually reduced to zero and are now merely “highly recommended.”
Curricula are designed so that almost no one flunks out in their first year. The second year consists largely of group projects, letting incompetents ride the coattails of better students. The requirement for x hours of internship can be gotten around. One Freudian professional admitted to me that a friend signed off on his hours without them actually being put in.
The field is in desperate trouble and they can’t (won’t) see it. Sick behaviors are being normalized. This so-called “Proclamation” is highly unscientific and unprofessional, the ultimate result of the lowering of educational standards. The danger is real and frightening.

Apart from their obvious inability to see their own moral corruption and incompetence in stepping outside their field of expertise into fields in which they are totally incompetent and ill-equipped, this is more than Orwellian and stinks strongly of the worst years of Stalinist Russia.
Doubtless they will soon be wanting to send “climate deeenierz” to goulags in Siberia ( or norther Alaska/Canada ) for “corrective therapy”.
They definitely need therapy.

I wouldn’t worry about these nutters. Everyone who could be brainwashed, has been brainwashed. What they’re petrified of is that sceptics like us are gradually persuading their flocks.
They’re also in a mad panic in case the climate changes, which will happen, but I don’t suppose we’ll see much change other than a gradual dip in global temperatures over the next decade or two.
What will damage them badly is climate change fatigue. Particularly after the last year or two of ‘peak hysteria’. I mean, really, where do they go now? They have told us everything’s going belly up in the next 10 years – again.
But this time they have all the brainwashed youth following them. Remember, when this all started, most of us on here were fairly long in the tooth. Now they have the problem with millennial’s realising that nothing has changed in 20 years of their life, and when they get to 40, they’ll be asking the questions we did, but there will be a lot more of them, and they will rebel, like all of us did at some time in our lives.
Something like when I was a kid in the early 70’s when our local Loch froze over every winter and we could all skate on it. I realised the climate was changing in the mid to late 70’s when that stopped happening.
The next round will be when these kids, many of them our kids, look back and say “what happened to our long hot summers?” and “I don’t remember my folks power being cut when the wind dropped”.
And I kind of console myself by looking at the positives. While our politicians are distracted by climate change, it means they’re not contemplating another global war. They can’t figure out what to do next because there isn’t much to do now that every civilised nation has recovered from WW1 and WW2.
On the other hand, everyone loves building something and having that common objective. So of course when there’s nothing left to build the left swoops in and tells everyone how much better life could be if we were only to accept that everything will be better if only we all share our wealth around.
They persuade people the objective is to build a kinder, gentler society when in reality, their objective is to subjugate everyone. Tragically, they are ideologically idiotic enough to actually believe their own publicity. They haven’t a clue what they are doing, but don’t ever believe it will turn out like all the other times before because ‘their plan is much better this time’. But ask them what their plan is and they haven’t a clue.
Which rather gets away from my point that it will be our revolting youth that drags us out of this. And, frankly, not much of what we as sceptics have done will make much difference because it would happen anyway, because the climate changes.
And will we bear any guilt? Well of course not, other than for saying “I told you so” and having the gumption to have a nice big shiny diesel generator in our former garage.

The several younger generations are caught up in the phenomenon of the “History of Now” which is more than just “if it didn’t happen during my lifetime it didn’t happen”; they have the ability to erase and replace previous indoctrinations with the latest.
That means the Alarmists can get away with scares about Global Warming, and when that didn’t happen, Climate Change, and when that wasn’t alarming enough, Climate Disaster. Still didn’t work, so you go to Climate Emergency/Crisis and show that every extreme weather event (that has occurred since recorded time) is now proof, and no one blinks an eye.
When Progressives can get these previous generations (in the US) to prefer Socialism and Communism to Capitalism, despite clear history, the die has been cast.
I am afraid that “climate change fatigue” is analogous to “odor fatigue”; and instead of getting tired of the smell, over time they are inured and take it as a given part of life, along with its associated remedial policies.
BTW, I still have 1/3 of a bottle of that favorite concoction and I will down a few fingers tonight as a salute to you and your valuable posts to this site.

Well, they did a pretty goo, if not as thorough a job in the 70’s with global cooling. Now we laugh about it.
The same will happen with the millennials. As importantly, when they are being financially squeezed by governments on the basis of a changing climate they don’t see, other than it possibly cooling, they will ask questions when they can’t feed their kids or pay for a roof over their head.
As they are driven further and further into penury and the elite are seen living the high life, resentment builds and belief evaporates.
It’s happening already in France and Chile. I suspect Brexit has given cover to UK efforts to shape the climate future but when the dam breaks it will be big.
The natural desire of youth is to question authority. As it is millennial’s are still too young, and the indoctrination is not yet fully established. Once it is though, they will, as we did, question why they should follow the rules.
It might not manifest itself in ways we expect, but it will manifest itself.

Its very much the same in Australia with the APA coming up with something very similar a year or two ago. Psychology in general has a bit of an identity crisis anyway. They are desperate to be regarded as a hard science (hence the reliance on statistics), but due to the nature of the human condition a lot of qualitative variables are squashed into the quantitative category so numbers are more easily crunched.
Let alone the replication crisis that is going on.

My parents grew up in “war time Germany” (the n-word gets caught in moderation). Those deemed mentally ill for not going along with the majority consensus of the day did not fare well.
This is truly scary. What are these people thinking? -that they are the good guys here? And honestly, how many people get mentally ill from reading up data and deciding the “climate crisis” is bogus, versus those left depressed and suicidal because they truly believe the world is ending in 18 months or 3 years or whatever the latest doomsday deadline is?

It appears they think adverse weather is an event caused by an acute climate crisis. This does not fit in any reasonable definition of climate. If they cannot understand what a climate is I would not ask them for help fixing fears of it.
I will maintain we must wage war with China and India to force them off of fossil fuels to save the climate. Nothing less will have any impact, so don’t ask me to support any policies unless that is included. If you don’t agree, you aren’t really serous about the situation – you’re a denier.

There is clearly a very good reason, why psychologists spend the bulk of their time in mental health asylums….they were made for each other.
They would like to give us skeptics beneficial electro-shock therapy made famous in the movie “One flew over the cuckoos nest” and then it will be easier to pick out pockets.
Notice how they want to focus attention on skeptics so that they will not have to sacrifice any luxuries.
These are probably the same people who think that people should not be allowed to receive any help from psychologists if they have unwanted same-sex attraction.
They are probably the same people who think that young children should be encouraged to change their sexual appearance if they show any interest in that area.
They are driven by a certain ideology . In one case it is climate alarmism. In another it is gender theory. Both are deeply harmful.

Does this belief justify declaring a state of emergency and thus marshal law? Will you stake your reputation on this?

I’m not sure that many of these “Psyscologists” were much in evidence when the Soviet Union routinely used imprisonment in mental asylums to secure dissidents.
But they are strongly signalling that they will be more than happy to “re-educate” skeptics in future, whenever our beloved leaders wish.

Since no branch of science is more rife with worthless research, unreproducible studies and ephemeral pop nonsense, it makes sense that psychologists would be most eager to defend the authority of scientific pronouncements.
I assume they are busily translating the many Soviet-era Russian textbooks of instruction to help them in their quest for right-thinking.
Back then doctors also supported the mighty state ideology. Some even carried experiences in that sense. Or correctively eliminated what they deemed unfit for the nation.
Hanging those criminals at a later point didn’t however resuscitate their victims.
History is a wheel. That’s why those who claim climate nonsense also lobby for gun control. Looks like they learned from past mistakes. Not the happy to oblige mases who vote their own destruction.
Interesting that the Germans signed right up. Think they might be a little more hesitant after their experience with National Socialism. Some of their members were leading exponents of the eugenics policy.
Planned population, yes. Also, clinical cannibalism, color judgments (“diversity”), political congruence, redistributive change, class privilege, and social justice, too. They were advanced administrators, scientists, and engineers, with a highly secular outlook.
Now, the psychos are bent on normalizing climate change conversion therapy.
They’ve not considerered the effect of this on their yearly, ‘fly-in’ conferences.
These are a bunch of quacks who have destroyed a significant part of their putative profession’s income. All those who are members of this group, and most of those who aren’t, are DOA as expert witnesses in court. Competent trial attorneys will use this crap to destroy their attempts to qualify as experts.
Plus this professional association’s messy suicide will lead to significant loss of income from prospective patients who are afraid the association’s association with junk science means they can’t give competent advice or treatment. That is most of their income.
Which will start the positive feedback effects as psychologists become more and more dependent on government income, which means loss of professional independence and still more loss of public respect as they become mere mouthpieces of them that pays them. Eventually they’ll become mere painted bone rattlers justifying whatever opinions their bureaucratic superiors already have.
Since the NRA tried to explain to the medical world that gun ownership policy – the so called “gun control” policy area (although actual control of a gun involves hands and sight and thus really might be in the domain of expertise of physiology experts) – isn’t a medical field (unlike gun wounds treatment, obviously), the “regular” (physiology related, non shrinks, non “I choose that carier path to cure myself” types) medical associations went “full in” on “gun control”.
How come their members are not precluded from giving “expert” testimony, when they can’t seem to tell the emergency room from the Bill of Rights?

Why would 61%-failure-psychologists even speak?? Why are they insane enough to still draw attention to themselves? It will be interesting to see where this leads – by making this commitment psychologists might be opening themselves to the mother of future lawsuits, if someone feels their therapist’s inappropriate climate behavioural advice messed up their life by say leading to them getting a criminal record.

Climate change denial is apparently a new mental process for concerned and compassionate psychologists to consider, diagnose, and perhaps treat.
Stephan L. may well be first in line to head up the new hospital for sequestration and treatment of the new Psycho DSM-6 climate deniophrenia sufferers. After all, he knows so much about it.
With all due respect to psychologists (which ain’t much), what you have here is a pretty clear case of one of the least credible academic disciplines trying to snuggle up to one of the most difficult (physics), in a desperate attempt to crawl out of the same mosh-pit as gender studies.
Most psychologists wouldn’t recognize “good statistics” if it bit ’em in the ass (which is also highly likely to be wrapped around their head). Now that somebody has actually dared to go back & check, supposedly seminal findings are being blown out of the water in a shower of non-reproducibility.
And these “climate science” psychologists all want to be the uber “climate science” Goebbels.
It is all politics and not science. According to science, the climate change that we have been experiencing is very small and is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and there is plenty of scientific rationale to support the idea that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero.
There is no consensus regarding the validity of the AGW conjecture. Scientists have never registered and voted on the matter. But even if they had the results would be meaningless because science is not a democracy. The laws of science are not some sort of legislation. Scientific theories are not validated by a voting process.
The AGW conjecture at first sounds plausible but upon closer inspection one finds that the AGW conjecture is based on only partial science and is full of holes. For example, the AGW conjecture depends upon the existence of a radiant greenhouse effect caused by trace gases in the Earth’s atmosphere with LWIR absorption bands. Such a radiant greenhouse effect has not been observed in a real greenhouse, in the Earth’s atmosphere, or on any planet in the solar system with a thick atmosphere. The radiant greenhouse effect is nothing but science fiction hence the AGW conjecture is nothing but science fiction as well. So what these psychological organizations want to do is all based on science fiction and not science. There is no consensus and there is not climate crisis.

What’s the psychological description of someone who sees something that is not there? It seems this psychological association is seeing something that is not visible, namely, human-caused climate change. They are assuming things not in evidence. Do you want to be diagnosed by one of these people? Not me. I’ll do the diagnosing! 🙂
