Bloomberg: “Extinction Rebellion Is Right to Target London”

Extinction Rebellion, ‘swarming roadblocks’. DAVID HOLT [CC BY 2.0], via Wikimedia Commons

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to Bloomberg, despite obvious indications Londoners are fed up, London hasn’t tried hard enough to reduce CO2 emissions to earn a pass from further Extinction Rebellion disruption.

Extinction Rebellion Is Right to Target London
Andrea Leadsom shouldn’t be so complacent about the U.K.’s performance on climate change. The recent data have been troubling.

By Lara Williams

London’s Extinction Rebellion, the undeniably effective local offshoot of the global environmental protest group, has been out in force again this week, shutting down streets in the financial district and disrupting flights from City Airport. Its so-called Autumn Uprising has led to more than 1,600 arrests, and provoked some very angry commuters. People from Greta Thunberg to Stanley Johnson, the British prime minister’s dad, have lent their support.

This year the U.K. became the first major economy to legislate a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It has also made great strides in the past few decades in slashing carbon emissions — by 42% since 1990.

These are welcome developments, but the future is starting to look a little dim. The government’s own projections have the U.K. missing its 2023 and 2028 carbon budgets (the name for its emissions targets) by quite a margin, as the chart below shows. These targets weren’t even aimed at getting to net-zero emissions by 2050 (the U.K. only had an 80% reduction in mind when they were set), so that hardly bodes well.

While this stalling on climate action is no doubt a symptom of a government distracted by Brexit, that’s no excuse. The U.K. is hosting the UN climate summit next year and if it’s serious about being a leader on the environment, it needs to make a success of it. Overshooting legally-binding carbon budgets doesn’t set a great example.

You may not agree with their tactics, but it’s hard to argue that Extinction Rebellion should be rabble-rousing somewhere else.

In Britain the green movement has won. Britain has a Conservative government which seems genuinely committed to serious investment in renewables.

Britain has unequivocally committed to dismantling their industrial age fossil fuel energy infrastructure, even though the new green infrastructure which is meant to replace fossil fuel hasn’t been built yet.

But none of this is enough. The green movement’s response to this overwhelming victory is to upset ordinary people, and to insult what is likely the greenest government the world has ever seen, for not trying hard enough.

Hi Greg,
happily there appers no need for such pessimism old bean; it turns out even millenials grow up once they leave their indoctrination at school and turd level education and get some skin in the game:
https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/charlie-kirk-millennials-gen-z-support-trump-despite-lefts-best-efforts

seems once a person moves from being on the receiving end of flows of OPM and instead becomes the source of it, endulgences like ‘demanding’ action on gullible warming plunge toward the bottomof most sensible people’s prioirities.
Which even the United Numpties should have figured out by now:
http://data.myworld2015.org/
note where ‘action taken on climate change’ ranked in the gloable survey.

Incidentally, the MyWorld 2030 survey is being conducted now so if you wish to let the echo chamber know what people really think, you can: https://myworld2030.org/#

The myworld2030 survey is the most biased survey I have seen in a long time. Everything in it includes ‘sustainability’ or some other green term which, as the last one came out so unfavourably for climate change, has undoubtedly been designed to ensure it doesn’t this time.

They will grow up when they have to. Change happens when things change. Change is on the way.

The Left is starting to wake up. Michael Moore is on the left wing leading edge. He has figured out that massive spending on the green scams will make the situation worse.

Obummer actually tried very hard (and succeeded) in making sure the Paris agreement wasn’t binding. It was absolutely essential, because if it was binding, he had to go through the Senate to get the treaty ratified. This is why so much of his legacy has now fallen apart, because none of it could get through the Senate, he did it by executive fiat, which is easily reversed by the subsequent executive.

I was also given to understand that the targets enshrined in UK legislation are at the discretion of one of the UK ministers, such that they can be altered at will.
This will, of course have to be done by some government at some point because it is simply not possible to go “zero” for probably hundreds of years until we are 100% nuclear.

I am in the UK this season, at a university. In this setting it is absolutely unacceptable to speak against climate change as an inevitable catastrophe. Time will need to pass, winters will be cold, and at most slow warming will occur despite China/India/Others continuing to pump CO2 into the air for quite a while. Eventually truth will prevail and the apocalyptic sort of folks will get on to the next incipient disaster. Too bad the UK will impoverish itself in the meantime.

I like the Brits. Good people. But misled all too easily.

It has nothing to do with the stated subject of the indictment. Otherwise they’d be going after the big emitters like China and India. It’s all about destroying western-oriented industrialized economies one country at a time. Germany has done more than any other country to try to decarbonize its economy, spending well over one-half trillion dollars, and that still isn’t enough to satisfy the accusers because it’s economy hasn’t been destroyed yet; so the recriminations continue – Germany needs to do better!

Every UK political party, apart from Brexit, seem rabidly pro-green. “rabidly” : a extreme, but when you endorse green policies as a fashion statement, then rabid seems very appropriate. Just about every green policy is an economic disaster. Endorsing green policies, with no prior economic, nor cost-benefit, analysis is being slave to fashion.

“This year the U.K. became the first major economy to legislate a commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It has also made great strides in the past few decades in slashing carbon emissions — by 42% since 1990.”
Actually, that is only true on paper and in the minds of AGW/CC bureaucrats who “deemed” burning wood pellets to replace fossil fuels is carbon neutral.
The Obvious Biomass Emissions Error
Anthony Watts
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/02/07/the-obvious-biomass-emissions-error/
“…But the “sustainability” of biomass is questionable, despite the childish notion that if you grow it, it must be sustainable. Burning wood emits more carbon dioxide than burning coal.
A 2012 study by Synapse Energy Economics estimated that the average smokestack of a US biomass plant emitted about 1.67 tons of CO2 per megawatt-hour of electricity generated, or 50 to 85 percent greater than emissions from a coal-fired plant. CO2 emissions from a biomass plant are more than triple the CO2 emissions from a natural gas facility.
Despite these well-known numbers, neither the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) nor the European Commission (EC) count emissions from power plants that burn wood.”
“In 2007, the EC ruled, “Biomass is considered as CO2 neutral. An emission factor of 0 shall be applied to biomass. …The idea that burning wood is “carbon neutral” originated from the 1996 Greenhouse Gas Inventory paper from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations. The IPCC assumed that, as trees grow, they absorb CO2 equal to the amount released when burned in a biomass-fired power plant. If correct, substitution of wood for coal would reduce net emissions. But a 2011 opinion by the European Environment Agency described a “serious error” in greenhouse gas accounting.”
Ya think?
“In the name of cutting CO2 emissions, four of the six Drax generating stations were converted to burn wood chips over the last seven years, at a cost of £700 million ($1 billion). Hailed as “the biggest decarbonization project in Europe,” this facility now consumes about 9 million tons of wood pellets per year, shipped 3,000 miles from the US and Canada.
An estimated 4,600 square miles of forest are needed to feed the voracious Drax plant, with acres of forest felled each day. Replanted trees will take half a century to regrow. Despite the decarbonization claims, the CO2 emitted from the Drax plant is far greater today than when coal fuel was burned.
Burning wood for electricity is just one more foolish policy in the “fight” against global warming.”

Bloomberg Is Too Stupid For Words

The Truth About CO2 and Global Warming

LONDON: In Britain, we may soon be sitting in an impoverished, dark country, with a trashed economy, incessant power cuts and dismal standard of living, caused by and idiotic dogma. The British are like a thirsty man refusing to drink from a tap because of a water shortage, while his local water company leaves hundreds of leaks unrepaired, allowing thousands of gallons to drain away each hour

In Britain, we are enduring one of the nastiest and stupidest outbreaks of intolerant, irrational zealotry since mankind emerged from the Dark Ages, which we now seem not to have emerged from as it appears to have been lurking just below the surface, masked by a feigned veneer of scientific rationality all the time.

I know about the fierce joy which comes from despising others only too well, and I fear it. One of the most dispiriting versions of this joy was to be seen in the painted, beatific faces of the red-robed mime-artists who are to be found on so many of the demonstrations demanding that Britain should commit economic suicide. What is going on behind those self-satisfied, ethereal expressions? They recall the Age of Inquisitions, which we once might have thought we had escaped.

Anyone practised in debate will take on a rational opponent, but there are some causes you can’t reason with and global warming is one of them. Climate demonstrators prefer fury to logic. This is always the sign of someone who is not sure of his own case, and hates to hear his inner doubts spoken, which might explain why no climate demonstrator has ever responded to any rational argument about the climate.

Britain recently closed and demolished Didcot ‘A’ coal-fired power station, an efficient, reasonably modern plant with a generating capacity of 1.44 gigawatts. Why? Because caution is not allowed in the great cause of cutting CO2 emissions. Consider these facts: 259 gigawatts (180 Didcots) of new coal-fired capacity are under development in China. That’s on top of the 993 gigawatts of coal-burning capacity China already possesses (690 Didcots). Britain’s whole electrical generation capacity, in all forms of power, is 85 gigawatts (59 Didcots). If we gave up using electricity entirely, it would make no difference at all to the impact of Chinese coal burning on the atmosphere – not that it ever did anyway. None. Not any. Zero. If we completely abolish all our fossil-fuel generation, including gas, it would likewise not matter in the slightest – except to us, our economy and our standard of living.

China’s planned increase, yes, increase, in coal power is three times the size of our whole electricity-generation industry – wind, nuclear gas, and all. India is also increasing coal generation and last March reached a coal capacity of 200 gigawatts (139 Didcots), but thanks to the political and media class’s dim acceptance of shouted propaganda, and their rejection of reason, we are already damaging ourselves.

Wind generation only functions thanks to huge subsidies, paid for by the poor, and is vulnerable to power cuts unless it is backed up by fossil fuel or nuclear generation. This is a futile, self-harming gesture and those demonstrators, ignorant and engorged with self-righteous rage, demand more futility. Britain is heading into the cold and dark, while the red-clad propaganda mob mummers, simpers, and gesticulates.

London Underground commuters attacked two Extinction Rebellion protestors in Canning Town. They were only saved by transport staff spotting this on CCTV and swarming in to stop them being injured. What you may have missed is that at the same time other Extinction Rebellion protestors were being attacked at two other underground stations, and this time it was the Transport Police that spared them from the furious crowd.

The Extinction Rebellion leaders saw how the public was getting an appetite for attacking their activists, and called off a planned blockade of Gatwick airport which was going to be a spectacular that closed the airport down.

There was another Extinction Rebellion protest at Oxford Circus when the protestors erected a scaffold at a road junction which stopped the traffic in four directions. The protestors were not attacked again only because a large number of police surrounded them and kept them safe from the enraged public. There were a lot of complaints from the public about why were the police were protecting the Extinction Rebellion protestors instead of arresting them and charging them with obstruction? etc.

Meanwhile, the sanctimonious climate hypocrites continue to live their nice comfy lives. One Extinction Rebellion leader recently took a holiday in Costa Rica which entailed flying over 11,000 miles. And have you ever heard of a billionaire like Bloomberg being inconvenienced by a climate protest or giving up their luxury lifestyle?

You probably didn’t know this, but a good proportion of Didcot’s power generation for a while was used for powering a good deal of the voracious energy appetite of nearby Oxford & Abingdon with its car industry

PLUS

fuelling the nearby Culham (fusion experimental centre, which of course never produced 1Joule of fusion power), Harwell, MRC and Rutherford high energy laboratories. (https://stfc.ukri.org/about-us/where-we-work/rutherford-appleton-laboratory/), as well as the main Met office in Bracknell.

It’s ironic that one of the so called “climate genius” to emerge from Academia in Oxford & the Met Office in particular is reponsible for the hypocrisy and the climate propaganda monster he personally spawned.
Sir John Houghton has a phone number all plain to see in N Wales +44 1654 767939
Why not call him up to explain why London is being brought to a halt on the back of the IPCC & Hadley crap he personally contributed to, while infusing most of British academia with lies about CO2.

How about a few people ringing up the old codger to remind him of the spectacular consequences of his lobbying for his pseudo-christian beliefs?

The ideas are quite viciously – post christian.
It has tragic consequences for old people who can’t pay their electricity bills thanks to the ever increasing prices due to subsidising “renewables” which directly hike prices.
It also had tragic consequences for whole areas of northern England & Wales which depended on the mines to keep communities alive.
South Wales now its coal & steel industry are gone, and soon to be shuttered car industry has become a European no-hope unemployment black hole,

I don’t recall 80+ year old academia with their giant pensions ever having to worry much about their consciences, nor paying for anything, never mind their electricity.

Nah!
They live in comfort, and are dead happy Britain closes down coal generation, importing the stuff from unsafe mines in Ukraine, while closing down their own coal industry.
Hypocrisy on steroids.

I suggest XT and GT take their demonstrations to Oymyakon, the coldest city on planet Earth, which ironically means “unfrozen water.” In that city the school children are not allowed outside, when the temperature falls below -50C to avoid lung damage. Here is an informative video that may give XT, GT and CAGW fanatics something to think about. The road to the Oymyakon is called the road of bones and stems from a regime they want us to surrender to:

Warning to GT: You should have a grown up with you, when you see this.

Boris’s latest squeeze bears some of the responsibility unfortunately, continuation of the baleful effect of Sam Cam on ‘hug a huskie’ Dave.

it’s hard to argue that Extinction Rebellion should be rabble-rousing somewhere else.

No, it’s easy. Try China.

“Even though the new green infrastructure which is meant to replace fossil fuel hasn’t been built yet”.

That’s a laugh! It hasn’t even been designed or technical feasibility established, let alone costed and put to a democratic vote!

The impossibility of zero emissions by 2050, now seemingly irreversible government policy chiselled in stone, was never voted on either.

Here’s an idea: take their electronic junk away from them. Arrest them, empty their wallets – whatever – but knock them off the net. All that stuff sends out signals and tracks you. Shut them off.

Bah, what politicians make, politicians can undoe. When the green stuff hits the wind turbines, and voters desert the “climate saving” parties, after the true cost and discomfort of UK climate policy dawns on them, things will go back to normality. Britain simply can’t afford this madness. And the rebellion will itself be extinct, a clear sign that Evolution has some inbuilt quality control.

“things will go back to normality.”

And how’s that going to happen?

Who’s going to build the new power stations? Dig up the coal? Drill for the gas?

It’s much easier to destroy Didcot than rebuild it. By the time Britons are shivering in the dark, it will be much too late to turn things around.

If XR didn’t exist, evil Big Oil capitalists would have to find them.

Enough climate scams !

It happens and continental media bravely avoids it. On youtube search for #Boerenactie .

Netherlands farmers mean it. No wonder media mute and obfuscate the topic.

An explanation of why Extinction Rebellion should not target Londonm and why Bloomberg are out of order, they should know better

London Underground Recent History. How quickly we forget!

On 7th July 2005 52 people lost their lives to Jehadi Terrorist Bombers on the Tube, travelling to work.

On 21st July 2005 4 failed terrorist bomb attempts were made on passsengers going to work.

On the 22nd July 2005 the Metropolitan Police shot dead an innocent Brazilian Man on the Tube as they wrongly identified him as a fugitive bomber from the day before.

Summer 2015 anti terrorist police prevented a repeat attack on the Underground by Jehadi Bombers (to mark the 10th anniversary)

I was on the Tube those days, but I still carried on doing my job. I would imagine the London staff at Bloomberg, at the time, were involved and knew people who got injured or killed.

Travelling on the Tube to work is stressful, you are always on your guard, with half an eye for anything suspicious. Along come the idiots from Extinction Rebellion, (who the BBC et al encourage by the constant clamour of “climate emergency”), climb on the Trains, your instinct would only perceive this as a threat, I am surprised they only got punched and kicked, the Brazilian man got shot 3 times in the head!

This is the fault of idiots in the media like Bloomberg, and the fault of every media luvvie and political idiot who supports XR. Including Stanley Johnson, who I always thought was a bit of an bumbling fool but now has removed all doubt!

I have no problem accommodating extinction rebellion, provided they go the wall (for execution) first. Then we can look down at their fallen bodies and “think of it as evolution in action”.
