CNN’s Climate Crisis Town Hall was a Disaster

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about CNN’s 7 hour marathon town hall on “climate change”. I just couldn’t bring myself to tune in, but some others did and here are some highlights and lowlights.

Heartland’s Donald Kendal and Justin Haskins are joined by Jim Lakely in episode #207 of the In The Tank Podcast.

This weekly podcast features (as always) interviews, debates, and roundtable discussions that explore the work of think tanks across the country. This episode features work from The Heartland Institute, the Reason Foundation, and the Foundation for Economic Education.

Do these candidates really believe this folderol or are they just acting in hopes of gaining votes? Don’t eat meat? Stop using fossil fuels? Stop procreating? Open borders? Give me your guns? If they expect the masses to swallow their message and like it they are seriously deluded.

Nobody likes the taste of ā€˜medicineā€™, but if you can convince the rubes that death is imminent, that snake oil will sell. ā€˜A fool and his money are soon parted.ā€™ ā€˜Thereā€™s a sucker born every minute.ā€™

Very imminent. We only have 10 years. Here, the UN said so in 1989.

Inside the bubble, this is a winning campaign platform:

Ban cows, meat and airplanes.
Promote infanticide.
Free health care for all, including especially illegal immigrants.
End ICE.
Open borders.
Free college.
Unionize all workers.
Guaranteed jobs.
Living payments to those who don’t want to work.
Opposite sex public restrooms.
Limit free speech.

All this socialist, globalist goodness will not cost most Americans anything, since only the greedy, undeserving rich and evil corporations will have to pay for it.

The elite are not stupid enough to believe their own propaganda. Just a few samples:

Christine Stewart, former Canadian Environment Minister: ā€œNo matter if the science is all phony, there are collateral environmental benefits…. climate change [provides] the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world.ā€

Al Gore: “I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are, and how hopeful it is that we are going to solve this crisis.”

Ottmar Edenhoffer, high level UN-IPCC official: “We redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy…Basically it’s a big mistake to discuss climate policy separately from the major themes of globalization…One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore.”

It is an ends to a means for them. The rank and file “true believers” are viewed as “useful idiots” by those at the top. That is why I will always try to have a polite discussion with the rank and file. If you can get them to even consider that there are other possibilities eventually they realize they’ve been had.

It’s very hard to do because Mark Twain was right when he said: ā€œIt’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.ā€

CNN would never have given the Democrat POTUS candidates “30 minutes of FREE National TV air time” if they had refused to follow the script by responding to the CNN approved questions.

30 minutes of “Prime TV time” is worth MILLION$.

But don’t sweat it, …ā€¦ those Democrat POTUS candidates can always “ask forgiveness” by telling the voters that it was the Republicans that lied to them about the dangers of Global Warming, ā€¦. and they will believe it.

At about the time the gaggle of Democrat hopefuls were debating climate change and the scary scenarios that will happen unless Americans destroy their lifestyle and assets, the BBC was broadcasting a programme about China under Xi Jinping and his policies, present and future, for establishing Chinese domination of much of the world’s resources and economy.
Of the two debates , the China presentation I think is both the more frightening, and the consequences the more probable.
The way in which China scammed SriLanka into accepting an outpost on a major trade route was an object lesson in ruthlessness. Australia, with China as a major trade partner should be careful – and despite the comments here and on , eg Jonova’s site about the craven attitude of Austalian politicians to China , the BBC programme showed that even the Turnbull administration contained ministers fearful of too close an embrace

Scientific Grantologist’s can never accept cosmic rays as a climate control knob. Cosmic rays can not be taxed but “carbon” as the climate knob is a convenient target. Low information voters are programmed to hate big oil for ripping them off every time oil supply/demand/security gets out of balance and the dems call for an investigation for price gouging. Emission spewing big utility is likewise despised because they are destroying the climate with C02 and the utility bill is in their face every month. Rate payers are finally getting even by forcing them to switch to “free” wind and solar. Ignorance is a powerful force.

Dizzy Lizzie Warren, the likely Dem nominee, since Biden appears to be crashing and burning, went full retard on climate, and on energy policy. She’s all-in on the GND. Whacko on steroids, and yet this is who will most likely be representing the Dems. We do indeed live in interesting times.

Reply to  Bruce Cobb

Dizzyā€™s great plan is to simply make the use of fossil fuels illegal after 2035, and let everyone else figure out what to do. If such idiocy ever became law, I would expect to see the major cities become desolate, burned-out ruins within the first month. The streets would be ruled by thugs until the end of the first week, when the food ran out. Money would be worthless.

The interesting thing – those most likely to survive would be the despicable , gun-toting, bible-thumpinā€™ rednecks who live in the country and hunt for their food; i.e., good, solid citizens. Morons like Warren wouldnā€™t survive a month. Money doesnā€™t keep the lights on, cars moving, food delivered to cities, or planes flying; fossil fuels do.

Fauxcahontas was so out of touch with American Indian reality that the recipes she contributed were French, using some ingredients not available to Cherokee people until after the arrival of Europeans.

Lying Liz’ recipes were featured alongside her mother’s directions for sugar cake and her two children’s recipe for peach cobbler.

Her recipes include herbed tomatoes and a crab with tomato mayonnaise dressing, cold omelettes with crab meat and Mexican oatmeal soup.

Her also allegedly Cherokee husband contributed an Oriental beef stir fry recipe.

Dizzy Lizzy should have known better. When she was a kid, schools taught the diet of Eastern Woodland culture Indians who met 17th century English settlers. In fact, Americans often ate the three sisters at the heart of Woodland cuisine–corn, beans and squash–aka succotash.

Cherokee and other Woodland peoples supplemented these staples with whatever animal protein and fat the men could bring home, whether mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian or fish. Also whatever wild plants and fungi the women could gather, such as onion and mushroom.

I don’t know whether Cherokees in their Appalachian homeland kept domestic turkeys, but they surely had dogs.

Remember what happened in 2010 when Waxman-Markey was passed House of Representives? The Democrats lost control House and the Senate never picket it up. Nancy Pelosi remembers which is why the Green New Deal (also cosponsored by Mr. Markey) landed with a thud in the speaker’s office.

Think of what CNN just did. Every serious candidate for president in 2020 got 30 minutes to weave a rope that will be strung their neck in opposition campaign commercials in the general election. Why in heaven’s name would any regular reader of this blog want to stop that?

C02 ppm going up, temperature going down. I’m giving free air travel in my truck just ring me OK.

September 7, 2019 1:22 pm

Just finished listening to the podcast as I drank coffee and edited some video clips.
One point I think Jim Lakely and Justin Haskins kept coming back to was this idea of “incentives” versus out right banning by government fiat.

The nuance that is at play with the Left (the Elitists) is the incentives are going to come in the form of increasingly onerous taxes to change the behavior of what the Left considers the hoi polloi.
Ever higher carbon taxes, say the Democrats if they get the power to do so, start out a mere $40/metrictonne and increasing to well over $100/tonne in just a few years. That would make the average person driving a car far too expensive to go to the gas pumps, it would eliminate much leisure travel by the middle class too, including air travel on airlines.
The government and military wouldn’t be affected, because they don’t pay taxes, either state or federal. Favored businesses doing business with the government could get “tax exemptions” to buy the fuels they needed in “pay to play” corrupt kickback to Democrats.

Same for everything else the Left wants to “ban.” Use increasing meat and dairy product taxes, luxury taxes on everything that people buy to give them fun or joy in their life, even taxes on owning pets. They don’t want to “ban” it because then the rich… the Leftist elites could have them either.

Obama said exactly that in 2007. He said he wasn’t going to ban building coal fired power plants. What he would do is make it so expensive that no business would be able to afford or build a new coal-fired power plant.

Now here’s the key part they all 3 (Don, Justin, Jim) missed saying: Those massive taxes to change behavior will largely not impact the lifestyles of the rich and famous (which now apparently includes the Obamas). These things they propose are for the unwashed masses (the “hoi polloi”) to suffer with.

A fundamentally restructured energy system that billionaires like Steyer are early investors in. The Hunts, the Rockefeller’s (Standard Oil) were the early oil men of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who became fabulously wealthy and since passed that wealth into their descendants today. The wealth that fossil fuel companies generate, they want that wealth from the middle class buying its energy to go into their pockets instead. The tools are as old a civilization, that is — buy the politicians to make it happen who lie to the people about illusionary dangers.
The #ExxonKnew scam is a vivid realization of part of this effort to demonize fossil fuel and destroy the existing energy business structures.

Tommy Steyer, Mikey Bloomberg, the Rockefeller clan, and all the very rich (Geffen, Hollywood moguls) will still have their private jets, their yachts, their vacation mansions all over the world… because they will still be able to afford the energy costs. Energy costs are just a small fraction of their disposable income. The same for the famous who nuzzle up to the Billionaires’ teets, like DiCaprio, they will get the benefit of that luxury lifestyle if they use their fame to promote the scam on the middle class. Even President Obama got his NetFlix Kickback for pushing through the Net Neutrality-Title II controls for the internet. A simple pay to play with billionaires and the elitists that surround them.

Justin also brought up the Matrix scene with Agent Smith interrogating Morpheus for the Zion access codes as to how today’s Eco-lunatics see the humanity. Worth watching to understand the level of contempt that the Left has for working middle class.

Actually town hall was great and much needed. Sadly the candidates except for Elizabeth warren we’re not prepared and only provided general answers. I applaud CNN for raising climate change issue because it should’ve been done 10 years ago. I’m saddened by the comments on this thread though. This decade will be written in history as humans knew about the problem and what it would do, but chose to not do enough and the world will be whatever we make it for the next generation.

September 8, 2019 2:15 pm

In no way can that townhall be considered a disaster. It was by far one of the greatest gifts America has ever been given. The soundbites and video clips are 100% certain to be used in the upcoming election to scare the living daylights out of people in the critical purple states. Democrats win when no one knows who they are or what they stand for. They are like the Miss America Candidates, they are always for vague concepts like Equality, Diversity, World Peace, Civil Rights. Obama was going to heal the earth, stop the seas from rising, blah blah blah. They never actually mention programs or policies because then people know that they are truly totalitarian Communists. Republicans can now point to hundreds of actual policies that the Democrats stand for…like killing jobs and banning plastic straws. America got to see first hand what a totalitarian sounds like and they certainly won’t like it. Next up is the LGBT Townhall where the party of science gets to explain to everyone how there are 52 Genders. The more CNN exposes the truth behind the candidates the greater the chance President Trump has at winning. They are already on the record of supporting healthcare for illegal immigrants, open borders and abortion AFTER birth. I hope CNN continues to give them the microphone. For years Conservative have been warning Americans that Democrats were nothing but Socialists that lie well, now the Democrats are embracing Socialism and don’t even try to hide from it any more. America is finally getting to know the truth about the Democratic Party, and Conservatives have been right all along.

Clearly, the only rational approach to the USAā€™s reducing the use of fossil fuels is to replace fossil fuel fired power plants with nuclear power plants but the Democrat Party candidates are against that idea. It would seem that their approach is to turn back the energy technology clock roughly 200 years to a time when mankind made no significant use of fossil fuels. The problem with that is that the old technology cannot support out current human population density so switching to the older energy technology would result in the early demise of billion of humans all over the world. In my neighborhood, if government outlawed the use of goods and services that make use of fossil fuels, most would die in very short order. Such a result might be unpopular with the voters. I would think that reducing the human population gradually by reducing the birth rate is far more humane then reducing the human population more rapidly through starvation as would happen if the Democrat Party candidates got their way.

Many looked at Al Goreā€™s first movie and cam away thinking that more CO2 in the atmosphere causes warming and apparently that is what all of the Democrat Party candidates think. It all comes from a chart that Al Gore displayed showing temperature and CO2 for the past 600,000 years and according to Al Gore the chart shows that CO2 acts as a global warming thermostat and that fossil fuel usage has pushed the amount of CO2 in the Earthā€™s atmosphere so high that we are in for a devastating amount of warming in the future. But a closer look at the data reveals that CO2 levels in the atmosphere lag and do not cause temperature change. The physics is clear, higher temperatures cause ocean temperatures to rise which causes more CO2 to enter the atmosphere because warmer water cannot hold as much CO2 as cooler water. Another observation is that past interglacial periods were warmer than our current one yet CO2 levels were much lower than todayā€™s. Furthermore the additional CO2 levels caused by mankindā€™s use of fossil fuels have not caused any additional global warming. Al Goreā€™s chart actually shows the opposite of what Al Gore said that it showed. It shows that CO2 has no significant effect on global climate yet the Democrat Candidates do not understand that.

The Democrat Party candidates also seem to have no understanding of economics. They are all proposing an economic plan that would devastate the US economy and maybe the world economy with it with the hope that doing so would somehow stop the Earthā€™s climate from changing but we know that such would not happen. But even if we could somehow stop Mother Nature from gradually changing the Earthā€™s climate, extreme weather events and sea level rise would continue because they are part of the current climate. So for the US tax payer, there is no benefit at all to be gained by devastating the economy but that is what the Democrat Party candidates propose to do. I thought the Democrat Party was in favor of making things better for the majority of Americans especially the middle and lower classes but apparently that is not the case. What the Democrat Party really needs are candidates who actually want to improve the economy and make things better for the majority of Americans.
