Dr. Frances goes on to say that it is counterproductive to discuss Trump’s mental state in psychological terms, but he pulls no punches suggesting Trump’s policies are crazy.
I used to wonder if some people were attracted to psychology courses because they wanted to find solutions to their own problems.

Trump isn’t nuts, the media is. And psychiatry is nuts, too. Do you know how they came up with “mental illnesses”? They sat around a table coming up with names for behaviors and voted them into the DSM. There is nothing scientific about it. It’s the second biggest fraud ever perpetrated on mankind.
If it had anything to do with science, there would not be entire categories which appear and then vanish with each and every iteration of the DSM.
And only very rarely is there any clinical findings that lead to when and what some thing is added or deleted.
In other words, as stated, they are basically just making it up as they go.
Gender dysphoria is a good example: It was once a clearly identified mental illness, requiring individual analysis and treatment.
But now it is considered bigoted and hateful to refuse to go along with such dysphoria when it arises in an individual, and those with this condition are being treated as if they are brave victims, while all who know them are being told they must validate these feelings and regard them as not just normal but instead rather desirable.
And all of this despite the knowledge that such people, when left with this condition, have an extreme rate of suicidal ideation and of actually succeeding in harming and/or killing themselves.

Some “mental illnesses” are fake, or are mislabeled phenomena. Someone who has difficulty with shift work, which is patently unnatural, can be described as having “shift work disorder.” Fake.
Some should not be diagnosed because the cause is something else. If a child is not parented well, and as a result the child cannot get along with orderly society, the problem is “weak parenting.” And, a fitting diagnosis might be “undersocialized.” Which is actually a real diagnosis. But the kid may end up getting the “ADHD” or “Conduct Disorder” label. Erroneously applied.
A principle of psychiatric diagnosis is that you need to rule out other explanations. If a person is from a culture that regularly sees and communicates with their deceased relatives, you want to be slow to diagnose “schizophrenia.”
But some psychiatric diagnoses are extremely well-founded. I have been able to work in social service settings where we came across people who totally fit “schizophrenia” definition. They told us the thoughts being put in their head, that they were being observed, etc. The onsets in these people’s history is very consistent. Symptoms are consistent. Response to antipsychotic medications is consistent.
And, there is ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE that a bunch of psychiatrists sat around and dreamed up schizophrenia, along with other diagnoses. Schizophrenia recognition grew across history, with jumps in recognition, such as with Schneider’s work in “first rank symptoms.” Modern recognition and definition span 1800 with Pinel to 1900 with Bleuler. And forward.
Across time, many concepts of diagnosis were developed. Circa 1950, the military wanted to have these unified in order to understand what problems they were addressing, to what degree, in psych care. So, they created te “DSM” / diagnostic and statistical manual. Basically, how many people with each syndrome, typified by these symptoms, do you have in your hospital?
This was an attempt to add rigor to diagnoses. DSMII similar. With DSMIII, the Am Psychiatric Assoc realized that there were different schools of thought behind diagnoses. To make the world more homogeneous, diagnoses officially became to be based on symptoms and patterns – on empirical evidence – and not on beliefs about how the problem developed. So, psychodynamic psychiatrists no longer could describe things as “neuroses,” meaning the problem arose from a neurosis. And behavioral-minded people like Skinner, etc., and social-context people like Bandura, could not have etiology be a basis. Just symptoms and patterns observed.
The knowledge about which diagnoses genuinely warrant recognition has mightily remained a great line of scholarly and clinical effort. Through DSMIV and DSMV. DSMV included a parallel set of publications, along with the list of diagnoses, and their criteria for diagnosis. This set of pulbications was the collected scholarly evidence, including the empirical stuff. So, you could select a diagnosis and go read a plethora of supporting information for the legitimacy / ontology of the dx, and its symptoms, etc.
The history of how we have regarded PTSD is quite well-documented. The “shell-shocked” of WWI were recognized. As time has gone on, we have developed to now perceive “PTSD.” If you do not know what this is, you might want to go talk to those who have experienced combat, and see what they or their buddies suffer with, post-exposure. Or, ra ppe victims. Yes, tell a set of ra ppe victims that their flashbacks, avoidance, nightmares, etc., is all just a bunch of hooey. Report back to us and tell us how that went.
Do some women falsely cry ra ppe? Sure. Do all women who have experienced this have ptsd? Maybe, maybe not. But I have heard plenty enough to believe in PTSD, from combat vets and ra ppe victims, and others whp experienced life-threatening events, and have similar symptoms following that.
Are the drug companies paying docs to make up more diagnoses, or to “expand'” existing ones, in order to sell more drugs? I am pretty sure this happens a great deal. This does not mean there is no such thing as a psychiatric dx.

But after hearing him speak, and watching him work, I believe he is one of the few truly good elected official I have ever seen. Another was the late Congressman George E. Brown, Jr., a very liberal Democrat from the 42nd District of California (and a personal friend), so this isn’t a partisan perspective. It has only to do with the moral character of the person. Vice President Pence appeared on a talk radio show shortly before the 2016 election, and concluded his remarks with (paraphrasing) “I hope you will help elect this good man to the Presidency.”
He had an emphasis on the word “good” that struck me at the time. Now, I know what he meant.

Allen Frances is a very distinguished academic. He taught at New York Hospital Cornell Medical School and was chairman of the psychiatry department at Duke University Medical School. He was the editor of DSM IV (the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association). He was very critical of the 5th edition that superseded the 4th 6 years ago.
He is 77 years old, and as far as I know retired from active practice. I meet him on a more than casual social basis some years ago and he was a very good host to us.
Like every other American, Dr. Frances is entitled to his opinion on subjects of public concern. As a professional, he is bound to not give an opinion about the mental health of a living person he has not examined. However, I think he was trying to disclaim that by saying “he needs to be contained by attacking his policies, not his person”.
Dr. France’s ethical/judicial opinion about Trump’s culpability for climate change and its impact is the opinion of a layman and worth no more than that that of any other layman. It was malpractice of journalism for CNN to put him on television and ask him for his opinion on a subject he has no particular expertise on. Stelter’s excuse that he was distracted by equipment problems is simply lame.
None of this is to say that I agree with Dr. Frances. I think his statement is truly deficient because of number of scientific and political facts. In short, the belief that “climate change” is a net harm to humanity is the top layer of a multi layer cake of theories and inferences none of which are well founded or well established. Sadly, I think Dr. Frances like millions of other people in the US and Europe has been caught up in a campaign of hysteria that has created a climate of fear.
OTOH, I think some of the commentors on this page have over reacted to something that is quite trivial. I hope that the readers of this weblog will learn that a calm disposition and analytic thinking are of themselves valuable.
What the “good” doctor is NOT allowed to do is offer pop psychiatric evaluations of anyone, let alone in the MSM. Even though his license is inactive (I looked it up), it should still be pulled for flagrantly violating the Goldwater Rule. He may have also violated ethics guidelines particular to North Carolina, but I haven’t had the time to look.

I know many people that are completely convinced that the “Global Emergency” is real and that “the Earth is on fire”, but none of them have even privately said anything so incendiary as Allen Frances, let alone publicly. Even if he really believes that millions have, or will die because of CAGW, to place it fully at only Donald Trump’s feet is completely irrational. I would like to be kind to the aging Dr. Frances and say he just exercised bad judgement in his pronouncement, but even that is too far to step back, at least for me. I have to say that it was one of the most irresponsible things I’ve ever heard an educated person utter on TV, and that’s saying something in this day and age.

CNN should vet their guests more fully. The man is a shrink not in any way a climate expert. His comments about Trump’s effect on the world are silly. But I agree that some of the comments on this board are over the top. I think the climate change is way exaggerated. But I also think that Trump is a buffoon. Those two beliefs are not in any way contradictory.

After 27 semester hours of psychology courses, easy elective courses when taking an engineering curriculum, the things that became apparent to me were:
1. People who have such problems only get better once they recognize what their problems are irrespective of any treatment by professionals.
2. All of my professors had fairly serious personality defects and scientific/math deficiencies except for one.
3. And he was a psychoanalyst, which requires a PhD in clinical psychology, an MD and going through personal psychoanalysis. He also had the benefit of common sense none of which were apparently benefits enjoyed by Dr. Frances.

The reality is that climate change is happening so slowly that it takes networks of very sophisticated sensors, decades to even detect it. We must not mix up climate cycles which are part of the current climate with true climate change. Based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, the climate change we are experiencing is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and there is plenty of scientific rationale to support the idea that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero so even if we eliminated all CO2 from our atmosphere which would end life on this planet as we know it, eliminated all CO2 from our atmosphere would have no effect on climate. But even if we could somehow stop the Earth’s climate from slowly changing, extreme weather events and sea level rise would continue because they are part of the current climate. So the best that we can do to protect ourselves from the ravages of extreme weather events and sea level rise is to improve the economy so that we can invest more in improving infrastructure that protects us from the ravages of extreme weather events. I believe that is what the president is doing.
