Climate Crusader Tom Steyer “Money Bombs” His Way into the Democrat Presidential Debates

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Tom Steyer makes no secret of his desire to expand the power of the executive to address the climate emergency, so his authoritarian presidency will have the power to override Congress.

Tom Steyer’s Facebook Money Bomb Worked — the Billionaire Is About to Qualify for the Democratic Debates

Steyer has dropped nearly $2.9 million on Facebook ads alone in the last month, according to Facebook’s ad archive.

WASHINGTON — Money can’t buy you love, but it looks like it can buy a spot on the presidential debate stage.

Billionaire presidential candidate Tom Steyer’s campaign announced that he’d secured the 130,000 donors necessary to qualify for the September Democratic presidential debates. That’s a remarkable achievement since he’s only been in the race for a month — and one fueled by a massive amount of ad spending.

“Since entering the race five weeks ago, our priority has been getting Tom’s message out to the American people,” Steyer Campaign Manager Heather Hargreaves said in a statement. “Tom reaching this milestone just five weeks into his campaign is proof that his message is resonating with people across the country.”

Tom says he has jumped into the race to save the world from climate change;

The Energy 202: Tom Steyer says 2020 race needs him for urgent action on climate change

By Dino Grandoni
August 15 at 8:50 AM

Tom Steyer’s eleventh-hour bid to run for president left many Democrats stunned. Why the change of heart? It’s partly because Steyer believes he’s the best on climate change in the crowded field.

The billionaire financier and Democratic donor said in an interview that he is the only 2020 candidate willing to declare climate change a national emergency. Doing so, he claims, will allow him to bring the full power of the executive branch to bear on what he sees as an economic and ecological crisis that for years has defined his public and philanthropic persona.

But Steyer argues that he’s needed in the race because global warming is “an urgent emergency” and the other candidates haven’t proved they’re serious enough about it.

“The question is what is going to make everyone come to the idea that not a problem, but it’s an emergency,” Steyer said. “It’s sort of like, this is 1940. We have a problem but we haven’t had Pearl Harbor.”

Trump’s embrace of executive actions has whetted the appetites of Democrats eyeing the White House. Steyer and other Democrats are openly talking about how they would harness and further expand the power of the executive branch instead of working with Congress

Laugh now, but I believe Steyer has a good chance of defeating the other low energy Democrat candidates.

Steyer’s ideas might seem outrageous, maybe even a little crazy, but I don’t think he is a fake – he really seems to believe in what he is saying.

I personally think Steyer’s climate ideas if implemented would lead to great suffering, and his plans to make the executive even more powerful, well we have all seen where that can lead. But if Steyer convinces enough people to join his crusade to save the world, it is not my concerns which will count.

He would have to walk away from managing his hedge funds. As President, he would be responsible for making decisions that would negatively affect the funds he is supposed to be managing. Talk about conflicting interests.
Perhaps he will be the first billionaire to spend Hundred$ of Million$ on a Presidential Campaign and lose half his fortune in the process of not getting elected.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg causes more greenhouse gas emissions from her sailing trip from the United Kingdom to the United States than if she had flown. About five employees would sail the yacht back to Europe, said Andreas Kling, spokesman for Thunberg skipper Boris Herrmann, on Thursday the taz.

“Of course, they fly over there, that’s no different,” says Kling. Herrmann will also take the plane for the return journey. The sailing trip triggers at least six climate-damaging air travel across the Atlantic. If Thunberg had flown with her father, only two would have been necessary to come to New York.

Steyer and other Democrats are openly talking about how they would harness and further expand the power of the executive branch instead of working with Congress.

But, but, but. They have a perfect opportunity to do exactly this right now. They do not seem to be the least bit interested. Have you ever seen a bunch so openly thirsting for power. Raw, unadorned power.

but I don’t think he is a fake – he really seems to believe in what he is saying.

I do not think so. I am convinced that all the upper levels on both the government and research sides know the issue is bogus.
Just an example:
M. Mann and the creation of the iconic “Hockey Stick” chart. The creation of the Hockey Stick depended in a critical way on a statistical technique known as the uncentered PCA, a method of Mann’s own creation. It seems clear that the usual centered PCA would not give Mann the results he needed, so he created a new statistical technique which would. This means that for months and months and possibly years, Mann was looking at a huge data set which did not support the narrative, no matter what he did.
He had to know.
NASA GISS and NOAA both. Constant and repeated “adjustments” to the data sets. The researchers have concluded that without “fixing” the historical data going back to 1880, the narrative falls apart.
They know, they all know.

At some point, the politicians pull a researcher aside and ask quietly for the straight story.
“Is this thing real?”
“No”.
They Know.

Al Gore warns of 20, 30, 50 feet of sea level rise by 2100. Then he goes out and spends $10 million on a seaside condo in San Francisco. The lobby of the building is only 3 feet above sea level (mean high water). He Knows.
Of course he does. They all do.

This may be the reason that arguing the science on the skeptic side has had no effect on the debate at all.
They all already know.

I always get a kick out of Millenials and their love of the Zombie Apocalypse narrative.
The typical Millennial sees themselves as the few human survivors, fighting to ward off the hoard of un-dead trying to eat them.

Sadly, they don’t seem to understand the implications of the statistics of 95% zombie population. If 95% of the population is “zombie-fied” that translates to the odds of any one person being “normal” are just 1 in 20. Which means the odds of being the zombie are extremely high.

But like Liberals and their hypocrisy, today’s Millennials seem to think that the dire sacrifices of what they propose will always be someone else’s sacrifices. Statistics and inability to comprehend basic math will be their downfall.

ARE ALL THE DEMOCRATS REALLY THAT STUPID, as they parrot global warming and green energy falsehoods that were PROVEN FALSE decades ago, or do they have a darker, more sinister agenda?

My conclusion is that they are knowingly trying to destroy our Western economies, to turn our countries into serfdoms with themselves at the helm, the new kings of a totalitarian world.

If you think this is an outlandish hypothesis, look around. More than half the people in the world already live under such oppression. Venezuela and Zimbabwe are fully destroyed, as is much of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Continental Europe is failing due to green energy fiascos and unchecked immigration, and Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA are all under attack. The popular media keeps repeating the same green energy falsehoods, and suppresses and distorts dissent from the few skeptics who dare to speak out.

THE COST TO SOCIETY OF RADICAL ENVIRONMENTALISM
By Allan M.R. MacRae, B.A.Sc., M.Eng.
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/07/04/the-cost-to-society-of-radical-environmentalism/

1. Introduction.

Ever wonder why extremists attack honest scientists who oppose global warming and climate change hysteria? Ever wonder why climate extremists refuse to debate the science?

It is because global warming and climate change alarmism was never about the science – it was always a false narrative, a smokescreen for the totalitarian objectives of the extreme left.

The novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four”, written by George Orwell in 1949, foresaw a time “when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism and propaganda”. It now appears that Orwell had remarkable foresight.

Here is the real “Nineteen Eighty-Four”, an interview that year with ex-KGB officer and Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov, who described their long-term program to ideologically undermine the western democracies. Jump to 1:07:30 for Bezmenov’s discussion of “ideological subversion”. It is all about manipulating the “useful idiots” – the pro-Soviet leftists within the democracies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3qkf3bajd4&feature=youtu.be

One commenter on the video wrote: “this is crazy, almost everything predicted by this guy is already happening.” Bernie Sanders, AOC and other socialist-Democrats are openly saying what Bezmenov predicted decades ago. The last democracies are under attack by leftist extremists.

All over the world, countries that once had a future have fallen into dictatorship, poverty and misery. It is notable that of the ~167 large countries in the world, most are totalitarian states, and all but “the chosen few” citizens of these countries suffer under brutal leftist dictatorships.

Radical greens have used wildly exaggerated stories of runaway global warming and climate change to stampede the gullible, in order to achieve their political objectives. The greens claim to be pro-environment, but their policies have done enormous environmental damage. Radical greens have also been destructive to humanity, causing millions of deaths.

ALLAN MACRAE , thank you for all your energy postings. Very insightful. I’ve read your earlier postings about “democrat thought processes. I agree with everything so say about continental Europe…well almost…IMO it’s already failed, the mindless attacks on conservatives and dissenting scientists by radical extremists and greens and more than anything the impossible to bear cost to society. A few hundred extremely wealthy control freaks may see opportunities for mega’-control. But, you ask are all democrats really that stupid? I prefer to characterize them as being willfully uninformed. We see this on our campus’ when students honestly believe they shouldn’t let anyone who disagrees with the liberal agenda express their views (agenda: Gouge the rich, gut the military, tax, spend, regulate). Reduced to it’s simplest terms, Democrats truly believe the money will always be there, it’s all about dividing it up “fairly”. Free college, free health care, guaranteed employment. pristine environment. and the latest “need” for quiet space. They’re really not stupid, they simply refuse to look at the real world of limited financial resources. Joe Biden recently explained it in perfect terms: We chose the truth over the facts. Once you get your arms around that you will understand liberalism. Yes, that really is stupid behavior but the behavior is an effect not the cause IMHO.

Reply to  Dennis Sandberg

I have stated in my recent articles that the leadership of the radical greens , who have everything completely wrong about CO2, global warming, climate change and green energy cannot all be that stupid – they have a covert agenda.

The primary stated objective of the Club of Rome is neo-Malthusian – the forced reduction of human population in a totalitarian (allegedly Socialist) society – and they are already doing an effective job, killing many millions through the effective banning of DDT, fierce opposition to golden rice, crippling of energy systems and needless increase in energy costs, and the misallocation of trillions of dollars into green energy schemes, trillions that could have been properly allocated to alleviate solve real human and environmental problems..

In addition to the leaders, there are the minions, the “sheep” who will follow anything that moves. These followers, Lenin’s “useful-idiots”, also call themselves “Progressives” (aka neo-Marxists), and they forget our history: Communist Mao killed about 80 million of his own people, the mainland Chinese. Communist Stalin killed about 50 million Russians, Ukrainians, and others – also his own people. National Socialist Hitler killed another 50 million people on all sides in WW2. Lesser leftist dictators like Pol Pot and other Tin Pots killed many millions more in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

What the neo-Marxists do not seem to understand is this:
WHEN POWER IS SO TIGHTLY CONCENTRATED, IT ALWAYS ENDS UP IN THE HANDS OF A VICIOUS PSYCHOPATH AND HIS SYCOPHANTS.

And no, this time it will NOT be different.

HAYEK FURTHER ARGUES THAT THE ABANDONMENT OF INDIVIDUALISM AND CLASSICAL LIBERALISM INEVITABLY LEADS TO A LOSS OF FREEDOM, THE CREATION OF AN OPPRESSIVE SOCIETY, THE TYRANNY OF A DICTATOR, AND THE SERFDOM OF THE INDIVIDUAL.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_Serfdom

The Road to Serfdom (German: Der Weg zur Knechtschaft)
is a book written between 1940 and 1943 by Austrian British economist and philosopher Friedrich Hayek, in which the author “[warns] of the danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through central planning.”[1] He further argues that the abandonment of individualism and classical liberalism inevitably leads to a loss of freedom, the creation of an oppressive society, the tyranny of a dictator, and the serfdom of the individual. Hayek challenged the general view among British academics that fascism (including National Socialism) was a capitalist reaction against socialism. He argued that fascism, National Socialism and socialism had common roots in central economic planning and empowering the state over the individual.

I do not see how Steyer could win the Democrat nomination.

The Iowa polls favour Elizabeth Warren to win the Dem. nomination in that state. A major British bookmaker now favours her to win the Dem. nomination.

If Warren wins Iowa, she could be the Left’s candidate.

Warren’s Climate Change Plan:
Here’s my plan for that: Invest $2 trillion over the next ten years in green research, manufacturing, and exporting — linking American innovation directly to American jobs, and helping achieve the ambitious targets of the Green New Deal.

I guess it depends on what you read. Last I looked, can’t remember where, Biden was ahead, but they have been throwing him under the bus lately. I think Biden/Gabbard could beat Trump actually, but the Dims will go with Bernie or Warren fortunately and, as mentioned above, Steyer will waste another billion on his misplaced vanity project. Hey, at least some political sciences graduates from California Universities are getting some temporary employment.

My take on it is that the whole slate is beyond hopeless, absolutely and utterly hopeless. Almost without exception, they are all just plain Looney-Tunes.
One or two exceptions:
Tulsi Gabbard, seems straight up, reasonable, and not Looney. She is currently on duty serving with the National Guard (bless her), they must hate that. But is she presidential material? No, not yet. Give it time, and maybe. That said, the rest of the field is utterly unfit and thankfully, unelectable.
This is just the sort of situation where you would expect someone to see an opportunity and jump in. So Steyer jumps in. I agree with you that Warren had a good chance at the nomination before Steyer’s entry. But she is just the sort of big money, well connected insider the democrats profess to hate, at least to their base. In a general election her negatives are through the roof. She would sell in MA, CA, and maybe NY, and nowhere else.
So Steyer is in. He could buy the nomination and work his will on the DNC with moves similar to what Clinton pulled last time around. Remember, the party has “Super Delegates” which can be used to control primary results. That takes care of Warren. The only ones left standing are Bernie and Biden. Two Old White Men. Ironic that is just what the Democrat party has spent these last several years demonizing. Both have small but fanatical bases. But the fanaticism does not make up for their small size. The rest of the democrat base would stay home and sit out the election. This would be a complete wipe for the Democrats, costing bigly in the House and the Senate. There is a good bet the DNC knows all this. They desperately need a White Knight to ride in and save them. Steyer thinks he is the one. Everybody else is not so sure.
We shall see.

‘Mandatory” will become the newspeak. Always with a simplistic justification to instil fear and always with a deadline and always with some kind of fake-tax attached. And always a diminution of basic freedoms and more power to the state/elites corporates. A same-old, same-old pattern continues.
I recall the ‘wartime effort’ exhorted by paul Ehrlich some 35 years ago.

You are going to have to find something with some reality behind it, guys. It’s called truth and transparency in the old speak and it gives, not continues to take and plunder, from from the real people of your land who can least afford to keep handing your kind even more power. They are waking up, so best hurry.

Steyer going for the nomination is good.
Dems want him for his donations–only.
This will be contentious.
Then he is another name in a crowded field.
Which is already dividing the Dem Party.
Then, the Four Furies have pulled the party far to the left.
Further dividing the pack from the main stream Democrat voter.
Lovely.

Yeah…tell Americans that you want to turn the President of a tripartite Constitutional Republic into an unfettered dictator who can simply declare a national emergency and decree a command economy to counter climate change.

Yeah…that oughta do it.

Tom Steyer is exactly all the things that the left claims Trump is – a power hungry billionaire that thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. First question he should be asked is about his comment about a nuclear war.

He’s unlikable and certainly not electable.

Trump’s embrace of executive actions has whetted the appetites of Democrats eyeing the White House

Remind me, what executive actions has Trump taken, other then to cancel out the ones Obama took? I honestly can’t think of anything.

Mind you, it’s hard to keep track of what Trump is actually doing. The MSM is nothing but a constant stream of ‘Orange Man Bad’. And if they somehow do manager to do some real reporting for a while, you know they’ll just go flying off the moment Trump tweets something about one of the Dems.

Since I’m having a fairly optimistic day, I’m siding with those who said yes, they do know it’s all crap and are not insane in any clinical sense. Yes, it’s all about grasping for power, and no, they will not enact any legislation more potent than throwing a token bone to the activists and workaday numbskulls who put them in power, just like 99% of these swine once they take office. Sucking up to Greta is the 21st-century equivalent of kissing babies in front of photographers.

I hope I’m right, because the alternative – the possibilities I consider when I’m not feeling optimistic – is really too awful to contemplate.

…and Nicki Menaj, and Lil Pump, and oh, I dunno – Juan Corona? He was an illegal and a migrant laborer, good poster boy I’d say.

And if that doesn’t qualify as the single most leftist-baiting thing I’ve written in my life, I’ll just have to try harder. Surprised even myself with that one. Quick note for the hard of thinking: “illegal immigrant” is not a RACE, jackasses. You want to do away with the rule of law, form your own country and call it The Idiot Death Zone or something.

I wish Steyer every success, may he be the “Candidate”.
Imagine the campaign, a Climate Alarmist up against a pragmatic businessman.
One has succeeded in life by working the market the other by building large infrastructure.

Who would the truly loonie left vote for?
Rich man bad?
So which rich man is less bad?
how does the “victimology” rate here?

Timing is everything and Steyer is too little too late, his proxies/agents mostly all failed to get elected last election so now he figures he will impose his panic from on high?
Just as the decline of the Cult of Calamitous Climate is becoming obvious everywhere.
“Climate Emergency”, panic now,do nothing…
It is possible that Steyer is as gullible as he appears, but in “Climatology” why assume incompetence when malice is so clear?

We must throw away our luxurious living and return to the”dark” ages..Pay our Climate Indulgences to those more worthy..shame and scare our children over the future we have bought them..
It does not sell.
Do as I say, insists Mr Hedge Fund Billionaire, but not as I do?
Yup he belongs in the “leadership” of our progressive comrades.

This past June WUWT ran this post:

A National Narrative for Media on Climate Change
Kip Hansen / June 22, 2019

Journalists around the world are being contacted by email by CJR with a message that includes this appeal :

“Our ask of you is simple: commit to a week of focused climate coverage this September. We are organizing news outlets across the US and abroad—online and print, TV and audio, large and small—to run seven days of climate stories from September 16 through the climate summit UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres hosts in New York September 23. The stories you run are up to you, though we can offer ideas and background information and connect outlets looking for content with content providers looking for outlets.

We’d be happy to schedule a phone call to discuss this further.

Sincerely,

Mark Hertsgaard and Kyle Pope

Looks like they’ve started early

It is irrelevant, other than for entertainment value, who enters the Democrat field. The DNC will decide on who their candidate will be, just as they did in 2016. My money is on this: After all the debate and primary mudslinging is over, they will choose Michael / Michelle O. to save the party. Using this approach, he / she will appear pristine.

I saw the ads on Facebook, read the comments, and he was getting flamed from the right (“you’re an idiot”) and the left (“don’t get in the way of better candidates who understand the climate crisis and might win”). I don’t see how he’ll get the necessary support, especially in a crowded field.

From the article: “Steyer said. “It’s sort of like, this is 1940. We have a problem [CAGW] but we haven’t had Pearl Harbor.”

Steyer should examine the years around 1940, and if he did he would see it was just as warm then as it is now, which means we are not currently experiencing unprecedented warming, and that means there is no CAGW to worry about, so Tom Steyer can save his money and go home now.

I thought Stever needed to get 2% in 4 separate polls in addition to bribing 130,000 distinct donors to qualify for the 3rd debate? Has he done that? And seriously, wouldn’t it be simple for a guy with his $$ to fake donors?

On another not, it’s hilarious (especially for those of us who live in the Socialist Feminist Republic of Martha Washington) that Klimate Kandidate WA Gov Jay Insleep is being eclipsed by the megalomaniac Steyer.

Unfortunately Insleep’s failure as a Klimate Kandidate means that he’ll likely end up running for (and winning) a 3rd term as Governor, continuing to inflict the misery of Warmunism on our once-free State.

From the article: “Trump’s embrace of executive actions has whetted the appetites of Democrats eyeing the White House. Steyer and other Democrats are openly talking about how they would harness and further expand the power of the executive branch instead of working with Congress.”

For one thing, Trump isn’t issuing any more executive orders than previous presidents.

What wets the Democrat’s appetites is the thought of expanding their powers.

Fortunately, there is still a U.S. Constitution, and executive orders cannot rewrite laws established by Congress. Exective orders can interpret laws in many ways and can cause harm if used the wrong way, but that harm can be fixed if Congress decides it needs to pass specific laws to address abuse fostered by a presidential executive order.

In other words, becoming president does not give Steyer a blank check to act. He is bound by the U.S. Constitution, just as Trump is bound.

I want the Democrats to try to sell to Americans that they give up their gasoline cars, their airplanes, their cattle, and they have to have a windmill on every corner. I can tell you right now, Americans are *not* going to buy it. It’s a sure loser.

August 16, 2019 11:21 am

Oh good … if Steyer is elected (a big if), then the U.S. can show the rest of the world just how destructive following the climate cult is. I was beginning to think we in the UK would have that dubious “pleasure”.

It’ll soon be a “very urgent emergency” … meanwhile in the real world where satellites show no meaningful change in temperature in 20 years and no trends in extreme weather …

Wiliam Haas
August 16, 2019 1:15 pm

There is no climate crises. Currently climate change is so slow that it takes networks of sophisticated sensors decades to even detect it. We must be careful to not mix up weather cycles which are past of the current climate with true climate change. But even if we could somehow stop the climate from changing, extreme weather events and sea level rise would continue because they are part of the current climate. So there is nothing to be gained by stopping the Earth’s climate from changing.

Based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, the reality is that the climate change we are experiencing today is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and there is plenty of scientific rationale that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero.

Lowering CO2 emissions by decreasing the use of fossil fuels in the USA will have little effect on global CO2 emissions. For those who believe in the radiant greenhouse effect, the effect is dominated by H2O most of which comes from the oceans and other bodies of water. The CO2 contribution is trivial. No way are we going to reduce total greenhouse gases and hence have any effect on the total radiant greenhouse effect.

The AGW conjecture sounds plausible at first but a more detailed examination uncovers that the AGW conjecture is based on only partial science and is full of holes. For example, the AGW conjecture depends upon the existence of a radiant greenhouse effect in the Earth’s atmosphere provided for by trace gases with LWIR absorption bands. Such a radidnt greenhouse effect has not been observed in a real greenhouse, in the Earth’s atmosphere or anywhere else in the solar system for that matter. The radiant greenhouse effect is hence science fiction so hence the AGW conjecture is science fiction as well. Apparently Steyer is basing his campaign on science fiction.

“expand the power of the executive branch”

I seem to remember reading that some German guy did that in 1933. He leaned on his legislative chamber (the Reichstag) to pass a bill called the Enabling Act. It essentially gave him and his cronies absolute power. The move was portrayed as necessary because of an urgent emergency in the condition of the German people (which, to digress, was a lot more real than the alleged climate emergency we’re supposed to be facing today, and that’s probably what made it so easy, people wanted a leader to get things done in a hurry. People were hungry). He was working in what was more like a parliamentary system, and he had to contend with a head of state, who happened to be a doddering old fool, so it was easy enough to lean on him too, to sign the bill.

With a compliant legislature, it’s easy.

If it happens in your exceptionally large, rich, diverse, powerful country, it won’t look anywhere near so ugly or obvious, and there won’t be men in brown shirts marching through the streets breaking windows. It will all be smooth, polished and PR-ed to the point where it will look like a picnic for everyone. It will probably be done incrementally, so no one will really notice how bad it is until it’s too late.

Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes, very, but don’t get too complacent. Please.

“because of an urgent emergency” Idem as in the actual climate scam putative urgencies.

We and the world, still bear the stigmates of these (not so) remote times.

And even today, when things are supposed to have settled, our nation is still regarded as, well, “Germans”. The guys who managed to start 2 devastating world wars.

As it seems, public never learns from history. If it looks like, smells like, then it probably is, numerous references available.

By comparison of ideologies censorship, intellectual terrorism, propaganda methods, liberticide policies and regulations, the eventuality of a third world war fueled by climate insanity becomes a tangible outcome.
